Such a legendary classic song. I prefer this video over the black & white version, this one was the international one & had that laid back jazz bar feel. So many 80's videos were laid back with vibes & happiness. I miss the 80's so much.
We did not know how good we had it with the 80s music until it was gone. As a teen growing up in NJ, I would listen to this tune and many other 80s tunes on WPLJ and Z100 late at night and be in heaven! You had to be alive during the 80s to understand what I mean. Trust!!
You are so right. I keep repeating all the old stuff on UA-cam- it all means so much to me. I had a fairly turbulent life and my constant companion was this music. I am planning my funeral currently and selecting all the songs that were an important part of it to bore the hell of the attendees. This is definitely one. The last song will be Pink Floyds "Comfortably Numb"
I always felt it and I savored every moment. I remember vividly where I went, what I wore, the smells, sounds, shoulder pads and White Rain hairspray. I close my eyes and an 80s song transports me back to a particular day. The 80s were the absolute best decade of my life and then the 90s came and everything came crashing down around me.
Why was Brenda Russell not a bigger star? She has an insanely wonderful voice and can really get the meaning of the lyrics across. I trusted this song - it is just perfection.
Try taking the person you love into the living room, turn the lights out and dance slowly to this. This kind of song really calls you to listen to it like that. Such a lovely song.
ive had this song stuck in my head for days still a great song lots of memories with it the 80s music is the best not like today's music it cant compare to the 80s
Silence is broken, but no words are spoken....love this song. I wish there was a clear video version. Brenda Russell and Joe Esposito voice goes perfect together. I guess it would, since their husband and wife.
i recorded this from the radio waiting patiently for it . then blast it with my cheap kmart headset .. I was a teen ager . what a beautiful gorgeous song
There are so many things to truly love about this song, it's simplicity, it's production, her voice, lyrical content, the story, not to mention a really great dance song. Brenda Russell rules. In spite of the current lack of air play on ANY niche station, (imo) this song is timeless and will be so forever. Almost 30 years old & it still holds well. Simply stunning!
i feel so happy reading all the comments here people admiring this outstanding work of art just as me. i don't feel alone in this days where this music seems to be forgotten.
I love how the music of the seventies and eighties have lyrics that say something meaningful, set to the most melodious and rhythmic sounds and feet tapping beats.
This particular song is in my top 5. As a matter of fact, when I die, I have given my younger sister a list of my favorite songs. I want the people left behind to have a party, not a wake. I want it to be a celebration of life. My personal opinion is that the Soul transitions into something else. The body ceases to exist. The personality ceases to exist. But the Soul continues.
Many a times over a song you keep in your heart for that one that should hear it . A woman can hear many songs and just be in love with every sentiment of her being . Faithful !!!!
I was 13 when I heard this in 1990.. and I will stop from doing anything.. just to hear the story in the song..I've been loving it until now..23 years later..still sound great to me.. the great Brenda Russell..
Its kind of ironic for me but I remember lamenting this style of adult contemporary music in the 80s and 90s. That being what it is, I have to say this style of music has more heart and soul than anything they play on the radio in modern times. This music has more talent, more technical proficiency, and displays the true mastery of music than anything they play today. Truth be told, there is a famine of good music these days and music such as this proves how far we have fallen.
Freaking awesome song. It came out in 1988, I think, when I was waiting tables putting myself through school. It was on our music track in the restaurant, and I got distracted from my work every time it came on. At the end of the night when we were cleaning up, it would come on, and I could concentrate on how beautiful a song it is. As much as I love Brenda Russell, mainly a songwriter, Joe Esposito also makes this song. I love it now in 2017, 29 years later just as much.
this song brings me back to the time i went working as a waitress my best friend would dance to this song which would make us burst in laughter..great memories come knocking you out from out of the blue.
It makes me sad that as time goes on, I get further away from those days in the 80s. The music and movies back then!!! I remember going to the movie's with my friends to see the lost boy's and thinking it was brilliant. Then you had music like this around and spending the summer with your girlfriend. Brilliant!!!
Still LOVE this song!!!! BTW....commenting on this song years ago.....a total stranger commented on it.....today...He and I are "friends" on FB !!! He gave me such inspiration!! GOD sends friends to us in "secret ways"!! Thank you my friend!!! Charles Satchwell!!!
Soothing and enchanting, mellow and soulful, music such as this can calm the nerves, alleviate much anxiety, and trigger sweet and everlasting nostalgia!
I saw this performed live at a Christmas party for the first time by a local band and was blown away. Brenda does even better here. Such a cool song with a great vibe to it.
This song is so ethereally and beautifully captivating, lovingly soulful and soothingly relaxing as it is. Spellbinding, moving and dream inducing, you could search the whole, vast and immeasurable cosmos and not find one piece of music as coolly mesmerizing and as smoothly sensual as this, while Brenda Russell's voice, as velvety as any on Earth, is the very voice of Heaven, sweetly divine as it is. Man do I feel serene and nostalgically reflective, lost in dreamworld while dreaming of the woman I love. Music such as this can purify the soul, and calm the mind, bringing out this euphoric, mature type of love that heals all.
I am 32 years old and I have loved this song practically my entire life... I have never laid eyes on this lady OR known her name for that matter! But I know those lyrics!
People ask why these songs aren't around anymore in the mainstream. I'll tell you why. It's because they are not mass-marketable anymore. While they may be in demand and while they might well be loved by youth if they were to be produced; there is no way to make money out of songs such as this in the current pop culture climate - and this is the root of the problem here. Tracks that are mainstream, crap, dance, rap pop sell to the 15-24 year old market (the most key market for advertisers). Thus today's "artists" are sold on top of everything else that is marketable and linked with them. You can't market brands like adidas, Coca-Cola, iphone, Talk Talk, O2 etc with songs like this anymore. Brenda Russell won't be selling alcopops or Smirnoff on the radio with this song, but Flo-Rida singing cynical songs about bitches and hoes definitely will (You see the link? Alcohol and songs with vapid, sexual lyrics sell pretty well together as a package). Our buying power and our loyalty to brands start at a young age. As we get older, we get hooked onto brand power; that means sales and therefore money. It never used to be like that but that is because less focus was placed on the 15-24 year old market back then as the advertising Mad Men were still figuring out what worked. And that is, unfortunately, for people like myself, the state of current pop culture. Full of transient, meaningless, crap, rap hop that is churned out like a farm of battery hens to keep the monster growing. That is why very little of the music you hear nowadays has much shelf life. It has one sole purpose - to make big business big money.
+zander469 Well thought out and explained. But parents have a lot to do with rap music's success because 15-24 years receive their money from their parents/ persons who would listen or by Brenda's Music.
+zander469 it's music from singers who sing from the soul , from musicians who play from the soul .. that make the connections to us, the listeners, through the music, the vocals, the lyrics. . we each connect emotionally to Brenda's vocals, to the music, the sounds and that makes the music special to each of us... memorable. One we don't wish to forget. . We love the music, we love Brenda's singing, and we then miss it when we hear it again, it's those memories we don't wish to forget ....
+zander469 You remind me that music isn't what we think it is, hence, its rarely what we want it to be, and therefore has very little to do with making money. It exists to attract God. 'Religion Separates Man From God,' an ebook

Hell yeah. Classic videos from 80’s. I believe this one was 1987. Love it! Creates such a mood.
@@mouchiecat1 Well it became a big hit around the summer of 1988.

I never ever tire of listening to this classic sung so beautifully, so filled with such emotion by the great Brenda Russell.
This was time for the back up singer to sing lead.
Why was Brenda Russell not a bigger star? She has an insanely wonderful voice and can really get the meaning of the lyrics across. I trusted this song - it is just perfection.
I wish I knew the answer to that question She was solid talent!

So sad that we won’t hear love songs like this again! So glad to be a young music lover in the 70’s and 80’s, classic 80’s!!

That was on point with an awesome take.
Brenda has some of the looks of Whitney Houston, Tuna Turner, and Chaka Khan.
