  • A Dark Passage is about the events in the time of the Fifth Battle in the Wars of Beleriand: The Nírnaeth Arnoediad (Sindarin: Battle of Unnumbered Tears), when the troops of the Union of Maedhros (an alliance founded by Fëanor's son Maedhros with the Elves, Men and Dwarves of Beleriand) planned to accomplish a major offensive against Morgoth and his fortress Angband. The result of the battle was disastrous for the Elves of Beleriand, because the Easterlings under Ulfang defected to Morgoth, revealed the battle plans and delayed the attack of Maedhros in the east. The western army was elicited of the mountains and surrounded in front of the gates of Angband. Turgon was able to relieve the encircled with an army from Gondolin, but the eastern host arrived too late and was attacked by the Easterlings in the back. At the same time Morgoth sent out his last army under numerous dragons and Balrogs.
The eastern host was wered down and in the west king Fingon was slayn by Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs. Turgon was able to pull back to Gondolin because the Men of Dor-lómin led by Húrin and Huor held the line at the Pass of Sirion to the last to give the Elves cover for their retreat to their Hidden City.
The Union of Maedhros was defeated and large part of the fighting population was killed. After his victory Morgoth controlled all passes to the south and his Orcs roamed Beleriand almost unhindered. In the battle died Fingon (High King of the Ñoldor), Huor (father of Tuor), Haldir (Lord of the Haladin) and Azaghâl (Lord of Belegost). Húrin (Lord of Dor-lómin and Túrin's father) and Gwindor of Nargothrond were captured alive.
With the capture of Húrin after his brother Huor's death began the grievous Tale of the Children of Húrin by the Curse of Morgoth (Video: The Curse of Morgoth), the intro is a short version of this curse, also in the song itself it is mentioned.
The song, the intro (The Steadfast) and the outro (Final Chapter - Thus Ends...) are taken from the CD "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" (1998).

    ----------

The part in the beginning (and also the outro) is another "song" of the album. About 50% of "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" are such interludes which are used to tell more aspects of the different stories. I just put them into the video for they belong together.

This song always brings tears to my eyes. But that might be that the fifth battle is one of the most saddening parts in the Silmarillion.

Poor Húrin. Looks like this song brings back so many bad memories he disliked it.

Those 3 dislikes must be from Hurin and his children.

Probably my favorite song from this album. I always imagine an army marching into battle as the song closes to the drum beat and the chanting.

I don't think the record company wants them on there or were offered enough money. It does suck that their old albums aren't on there, given how amazing they are. I discovered this band 10 years ago by a friend and still my favorite.

The interludes of "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" were spoken by Norman Eshley and Douglas Fielding while Sozin's voice is Ron Perlman. But I never watched the series, so I have no answer to your question. Sorry...

      Which one voiced Morgoth?
Asking because the voice who plays Morgoth in this album is my default mental conception of what Morgoth sounds like.

John Whitesell Imagine Morgoth being voiced by Ron Perlman, that would be epic.

Amazing song. Strange this sounds like a triumphant song of good conquering evil, but it's the opposite. This album sounds epics through my Woo Audio WA7 + T90's.

Depends on which side you fight. For the Twisted and Wicked minds Morgoth is the only one good God and its worth fighting for him because you can earn so much
