RARE! Montréal Métro train breakdown at McGill metro station with full action on video 🟢🚇

- NOTE: I MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN A DAMAGED TIRE, BUT I AM NOT 100% CERTAIN. This is because this is what @LiamQC - the person who heard the chatter on the STM scanner feed - thought he heard. Also, it is based on the fact that other commuters here commented they heard a loud bang similar to a tire popping. Again, I am not sure 100% what happened.
In the early evening of Monday, July 15, 2024, AZUR metro train Set 63 had an unknown mechanical problem involving it's wheels - or a nearby location of the train - at McGill metro station on the Green Line of the Montreal Metro.
Thanks to fellow transit fan @LiamQC who notified me what was happening, I was able to arrive on time and film this amazing action.
I've never filmed an actual train breakdown at the location where it happened before, so this was pretty historical.
As you can see in the video, the train slowly left the station under very low power and, as mentioned by fellow transit fan @MR-63, it was probably taken directly to the garage at the Youville Shops
The train was on the Honoré-Beaugrand direction platform.
Note that I did not witness the disruption, but I read on Twitter that some metro users heard a very loud bang near Guy Concordia metro station. This suggests that it was a blown tire, but as others have pointed out, this may not have been the case and it might have been another type of mechanical problem.
Also, I mentioned it might have been going to the Duvernay spur, but in fact the Duvernay spur is in the opposite direction towards Angrignon, the same platform I was standing on.
Normal metro service resumed not long after I wrapped up the video.
This video was filmed on Monday, July 15, 2024 starting at approximately 6:44 pm Eastern Canadian Time.
Remember you can see many more metro themed videos on my Montréal Métro playlist!
Thank you so much for watching!
Wow, never thought the Metro would have a flat tire incident ever.
It actually happens more or less 2 or 3 times a year. Like someone mentioned, there could be sharp debris on the tracks, normal ware and tare, etc.
Because Montreal official is so corrupted to buy from France their poorly invented rubber tyre technology. So basically this happens like each week. This rubbish technology keeps running speed low, with high noise, high repair rate, high replacement cost, high maintenance cost, high personnel cost and high disturbance. On top of that, they never announce anything in english so all tourist don’t know nothing and keep waiting, exploiting their trip.
Wow such a rare catch! On your birthday also!
Yeah true!
Wow! I always thought those tires were stronger than the regular ones. Never thought that rubber tires could have punctures. Nice catch, mate!
Thanks! I am not sure if it was for sure a flat tire that happened or just a wheel problem.
@@SkyOfTheUniverseEither way, that’s a first for us transit fans.
@@SkyOfTheUniverse The axle rolling system is that of the RATP in Paris.
Retaining the classic rails in addition to the running tracks makes it possible to continue driving in the event of a puncture, without passengers and at lower speed, but without prolonged stopping of the train.
It was a flat tire. Those tire are hard to puncture, but it still happens if something is on the track.
Nah. It happens every month. Replacement cost of wheel weight over 40% of the whole maintenance cost. The choose such a poor technology simply because it’s a French technology, that’s it.
The Montreal metro also has a set of steel wheels under the train. All of the switching is done using those steel wheels. In an emergency, they can be used to get the metro back to the depot.
Very fascinating! Thanks for the information
Wow!
I know eh? Thanks for posting my video btw!
That’s quite rare indeed! The azur are usually some of the most reliable rolling stock in the world, so breakdowns like this don’t happen often. Quite strange to have the powering up warning at 5:17 while the power is clearly already on
Yes I noticed that point as well that the announcement came on after the power up! I guess blown tires can happen to any train.
The Azur trains also have batteries so they can run even if there is no current on the electrified rail, in case of emergency...
Wow this is so cool and rare to see!!!!
I know eh
Patrick set 63 train has to go to the garage Patrick birthday boy 38 year old boy
I was in montreal at that time! I got set 71 on the orange line and my parents were like "why r u so excited"
Yeah, the last AZUR train built!
Been living in Montréal my whole life..never seen this.
Yeah it was my first time seeing it in person.
its a good think the metro dont break too often
@@maniaque37 they usually stop..only because somebody jumped in front..sad.
That happened in guy-concordia and i was about to go until the one you're recording is the train when it
Happy belated birthday Pat I’m so sorry I didn’t wish you a happy birthday earlier and that was pretty cool to catch
Thank you so much and no worries!
I didn't see a flat, it looked like they were looking at the electric contact. Maybe faulty.
Happy Birthday (Sorry if I'm late)
Thank you and no problem :D
Also, late happy birthday, mate. My apologies for missing it yesterday. I was busy with schoolwork.
No problem! Thank you!
@@SkyOfTheUniverse👍
Wow.
That was something
Yeah I wonder what was actually wrong with it
That was such a cool and interesting vid
And they expect people to be happy
Bro what 😂
Very rare❤
Why do they even stop for a punctured tire? They have metal wheels and rails as backup, I mean sure it's louder but AFAIK all other subway systems use rail
Good question. I'm not 100% sure it was a punctured tire btw but yeah good points.
Actually if you stand at the platform, you know that their rubber wheel train is much louder than metal wheel train in Toronto, New York and Japan.
They better do something before things get worse
Hi,
I used Google translate to understand what happened with the metro. First time I'm expecting a tire problem. I have already asked myself the question if it happens that the metro gets punctures. So I think I got my answer from your video.🤔
Yes I'm not sure 100% if it was a puncture or something else. Yes Google translate is great
Rare And Difficult Times Away 🥴😒🙄
Patrick you have to be one of the luckiest man out there to have catch that
Well it was because of a fellow transit fan and friend named Liam who happened to find out exactly where the incident occurred. I went as fast as possible from Bonaventure to there.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Thank you so much
I was on a azur filming a ride at the same time
What a coincidence
Wow
I don't think the flat tire is the problem. The wheels are designed to "fall" onto the tracks (if they lose support from the rest of the bogie) using the steel rim used for the brakes. I was in Paris with the same cars and they sometimes "fall" onto the rails when certain construction works is being done on the roadway for the tires.
The problem is if the tire is flat, it can get out of the rim and cause much more problem, hence why there's a guy at the open door to keep an eye on the tire.

Great video through. Have never seen that live. Each time disruption occurs I was somewhere else having to take a bus instead. And the bus stops are way too crowd. Oh yes if your trip exceeded 2 hours because of this, they are still charging you 2 times CA$3.75
Happy birthday
Thank you!
You're obviously not from Montreal to say this is RARE. lol! Every time I take the Metro there's a stoppage or a slowdown, for multiple reasons. It no wonder people are mad. They are sick and tired of being late because of the Metro. We thought that it would get better with the implementation of the AZUR trains but unfortunately, things didn't really change that much. Plus now, the Metro is probably one of the least safe place in Montreal.
Oh I know there are so many disruptions lol when I said rare, I meant to be able to film at train breakdown at the actual station it occurred in. Usually I am at another station or somewhere else when it happens.
Oh man and I thought fixing the tires on my berg pedal go kart was difficult
The metro is getting worse and worse every year. It is really frustrating because I’m trying to only rely on the transit but I can’t. There’s at least one breakdown per week and it’s usually during rush hour. Their best year was 2016.
Yes great points.
STM is so unreliable nowadays. It’s a closed circuit train and they can’t even run it on schedule. Platform says 5 minutes, 5 minutes passed and nth happens. Then the platform display 5 minutes again. No show train is utterly unacceptable. As a matter of fact 5 minutes delay compare to Japan it’s already classified moderately serious delay.
@@TammyNosky-h6z I totally agree with your points, plus it used to be 2-3 minutes 2 years ago. I must mention that it’s even longer than 5 minutes during the weekend…
Is the rubber tires better than steel wheels for metro train?
Steel wheels not good here cause of incline of the tunnel
I mean it's not like they can call a tow and jack the thing up, they'll have to slow roll it out of there unless the axle is bound frozen and cannot move. tire blowout on a train, that's a first lol! I was there when those were still brand new and, only a few sets. I cannot understand how these can be cheap to operate with 12 tires per truck operationally.
Belle vidéo
Merci!
Holy sh*t
Did this happpend before ?
How its actually the first time happening
This is very cool!
Yes very unusual
Came here for the internet-mechanics. Not disapointed.
Happy bday
Thank you!
Wow That's New and Very Rare
Yeah it happens a few times a year eh but I never seen the aftermath in person
I never seen my Metro with azur with because me and my mom, my sister and dad we went there like plenty of times and I never I saw it get a break it down. This is kind of a rare condition
Yes it is rare indeed.
@@SkyOfTheUniverse It's really my first time seeing this rare condition
@@SkyOfTheUniverse and your videos excellent
Pretty sure they’re going to Youville, Duvernay is on the opposite side
Yes you're right
happy birthday pat
Thank you so much!
Looks more like an issue with the electrical contacts than a flat tire
Very possible
Its really annoying especially when its the evening and people want to go back home 🤦♂️
Yeah things happen. I guess every mode of transit has breakdowns either it's vehicles on a highway that cause a traffic jams, buses, metros, etc
Intresting 😮
the tire can still roll even no air but stm is so ..............
Mon chum c'est le meilleur ! ❤
It happens each day in Montreal Metro
Yeah almost every day it seems
ays.
i live in mtl
We have a nice city
What were you planning before filming this ?
I was on the way home after filming a REM light rail ride and biking.
Yeah the stm
Stm
What a company 😅
Didnt i remember you filmed something similar to this ?
It's very possible. I filmed quite a few disruptions over the years.
😃🙂😀👍
How tf can a electric train even blew a tire ?
Same like a car: debris on the rollway, hot spot, wearing down, etc. It's a known risk, which is why there are conventional tracks between the rollways that interact with steel train wheels on the axle to catch the train when a tire blows.
The rubber tire system imported from Paris was used because at the time the tires offered better acceleration and far better climbing performance on steep grades (when dealing with the elevation changes up and down the Falaise and up the shoulders of Mount Royal).
Great explanation! Thank you
Are announcements only in French?
Yes except for evacuation emergency announcements
I find this funny how a single train cause other trains to slow down and being late
The stm: we love to make our clients happy
Also the stm: we love to make our clients pissed 😂
Umm i thought that it would never happend with the new trains
It can happen to any train I suppose. Like someone said, debris on the tracks, hot spots, ware and tare, etc
Nothing RARE there :-)
someone throw some bunch of nails I guess.
The island of geniuses yet again in all its inept glory!
Your OIS is all wacky for some reason
Did you know what the issue and happy birthday sky sorry for late because i didn’t know When was your birthday and i saw the comment so it 15th july your birthday
Thanks mate! No worries on the late happy birthday at all. I am not sure what happened, but apparently something on olvikg either a blown tire, the wheel, or some other related part.
I hate when this happend
Yeah I know eh
I have a feeling this is a common occurrence. Never saw trains with rubber wheels before.
Yeah rubber tires are unique to Montreal. Paris and a few other cities. The benefits of rubber wheels are smoother rides and less noise.
Yes it was very odd to hear the announcement that they were turning the power back on after the fact. I only realized after watching the video that that's what happened. I was so focused on filling it didn't register in my mind haha.
If your telling me that a billonaire Montreal company cant even take 5 minutes each morning to check if any of their trains does not have any issues then just really want to make people absolutely angry
And i think that the stm need to spend money on stuff that really useful
So situation like this happend rarely
The cause of the flat tire may also be something that fell, or was thrown, on the cement track on which the tire is rolling.
@@renezescribe1229i dont think so otherwise it would be more than one tire that would have blown
Thats unsual......
Yeah it apparently happens more or less a few times a year.
Don't expect too much from an outdated technology.
Parle francais
Bon la stm est stupide alors
T'es au Québec parle en français
Oui oui
beaucoup de gens a montreal parlent anglais lol
L'anglais c'est pas interdit 😊😂🫵
Trains with tires has to be the dumbest idea ever. The drawbacks completely outweigh the benefits.
They are much quieter than steel wheels!
Lmao, this is one of the only drawbacks that exist with rubber tires
It happens really rarely too
Rubber tires help for acceleration, steeps and are quieter
@@Urban_LP But they are significantly less efficient than steel on steel which is a huge disadvantage, especially in mass transit where low running costs are extremely important.
