  • In this video I unbox, setup and show you around the Simon Hope wood turning Hollowing Jig with Camera system. See how I assemble the jig and walk you through the setup on my Record Power coronet Herald midi lathe. I then have my first go at hollowing with it. Then its on to setting up the camera system and do some more hollowing.
    This jig, tools and camera system are available from

      Thanks Mike. Its a learning curve as always but i'm enjoying it and I feel a lot more in control than I did with a handheld tool

    I'm just an 'armchair - in my head - woodturner', thinking of taking up the hobby. I love this kind of technology that seems to make the woodturners job easier and helps them realise the work they have already crafted in their head. Thanks for sharing John, your videos have and remain inspiring to me 👍

      Thanks buddy. I'm all for making things easier. I especially love a jig and this combines both. Bite the bullet, get yourself a lathe, you wont regret it! Your bank balance might though lol

    An excellent comprehensive guide to the Simon Hope hollowing system. A little easier, than my £30 hollowmaster, to get a consistent wall thickness. They both use the same tips, the aggressive cutter and the disc which give a good finishing cut.
    Thanks

    Nice job can I suggest useing the small adjustable cutter for all the hollowing and the scraper to remove high spots and ridges and blending as you hollow deeper. open a hole up in the middle to give you room at first about 3/4 way down keeping the walls about 10 to 15mm thick and always pull outwards in sweeping action on the top half of the vessel and push in a sweeping action on bottom half on end grain hope that helps.

    Great video John. When setting up the camera you will find you get better accuracy if you move it down so it is just above the work piece. You will find that the camera distorts the image slightly so I printed out, on a piece of card, concentric rings 2 mm apart. I first do, as you did, Mark on the screen where the cutter is. After working on the rim and attaining the wall thickness I want, l put the cutter in the form touching the wall where the desired wall thickness is. I then put 1 dot on the screen on the outer edge of the wall, therefore setting the desired wall thickness. Next I take the cutter out of the form and place the card below with the cutter in the centre of the rings. I trap the card between the tool rest and the cutter bar to hold it in the correct position. You can now place more dots on the screen by placing them on the same corresponding ring that the first dot appears on. This way, even though the dots on the screen don't appear to be the same distance from the cutter, you will get a more accurate wall thickness when using different parts of the cutter.

      Paul Truepenny Thanks for the tips Paul. I did move the camera down so that I had a good amount of the piece visible. I like your suggestion. I may well give that a try.

    I love Simon Hope tools! It truly was the game changer coming out with that 6 mil detailing carbide cutter. I've bought from them before and I will purchase from them again! My lathe at the time is very small and I am unable to find such jigs for smaller bits which I use often. Many blessings to you John! Thank you for doing this review!

    Great review and explanation of this tool. You must have stayed up all night read and learning all there is to know about it. I say that because your explanation was spot on and also you never stumbled one bit explaining everything. I hope it works great for you. I just got my lathe and my haven’t used it yet bc I got put in the hospital. I have a fractured bone in my spine and they’re trying to figure out the correct next step. I will make it but it’s definitely been a long struggle so far. It’s been hurting for 4 or 5 months so I’m ready for the next step to hopefully get me on the road to recovery. Take care John and good luck with your new tool!!! Take care and be safe.

    I have this system. It's fabulous takes the stress out of hollowing but as you found you still need to apply skill and a light touch. You can get massive catches just like you can when hollowing without a jig like this.

    • @JohnClothier
      @JohnClothier  6 років тому

      Chris Sammons indeed Chris. As with anything new technique need a to be established. I've since made a complete vessel with it and I am starting to understand it. You are right. A light touch is best! It's actually pretty quick at removing wood despite the light touch

    I have this jig but with the laser and not the camera I love it !!! It's permanently bolted to my lathe. Might I suggest you practice using it on a bowl of reasonable size so you can see in the bowl and on the screen as you progress. With the tool at an angle the sides are being scraped as with a negative rake scraper but the bottom is being shear cut more aggressively. I am sure it won't take you long to get the best out of it. Thanks for sharing.

    • @JohnClothier
      @JohnClothier  6 років тому

      Max Forest Thanks for the tips Max. I was tempted with the laser as it saves a lot of money. It has the same end result but I'm a gadget lover and this just blew my mind lol

    Another useful and interesting video John, thanks for the time and effort in sharing. I have one but only had one outing. You have to respect that 6mm cutter, its damned greedy. I went for the laser system only, which worked very well, however, looks like Im going to but the camera now...

    • @JohnClothier
      @JohnClothier  6 років тому +1

      Thanks William. Yes it sure does hog out the wood! I find myself going a little too thin far too easily. I do like the laser and was tempted but I think the camera is worth the extra cost. It does make the job a little easier plus I love a gadget!

    This is a really well made video John I love the way you explain everything so simply and what a great tool. I can imagine it's quite difficult to use as it seems like an unnatural way to use it by looking at the screen as turning is about watching the material as much where the tool is going but like you say with practice it'll be great. I really like the way you can mark the position of the cutter on the screen. I'm no where near proficient enough to start hollow forming yet but I can see myself buying one of these setups in the future. Good job mate..

    • @JohnClothier

      Dave.G.Designs Thanks Dave. The camera makes it a lot easier that's for sure. With practice it will become natural to look at the wood and the camera to give you the best result

    Great video John, almost saves me having to read the instructions. Hopefully going to use mine for the first time today.
    I think watching the screen rather than the work is the real learning curve for you, I'm wondering if you had it mounted over the headstock if it would be easier to work with as you're naturally moving the tool in the direction you're looking at.

    • @JohnClothier
      @JohnClothier  6 років тому

      Paul Lockwood Thanks Paul. Glad it's of use. I should have mentioned in the video that you can adjust the screen to reorientate it so it matches your cutting ditection. I mounted it on the back wall by the headstock. It's a little tricky to start with but you soon get used to flicking your eyes between the wood and the screen

    Very informative and helpful video John. Saved me the reading. I was just setting up my SH Camera system and i thought to youtube it. Considering that you had it for a while now, do you find it irritating that there is no trap to support the hollowing bar? I was hollowing a 20" long vessel and the chatter/vibration of the bar is very annoying. thanks

    • @JohnClothier
      @JohnClothier  5 років тому

      Thanks. I'm glad it was helpful. I haven't hollowed anything that deep so I haven't experienced that issue.
