There was a time in my life I only had 10$ to last two weeks on food,, I have always worked full time but didn't get paid enough to "buy food" .hard living off of that, I either just went without or peanut butter and jelly, I would walk around the grocery store in tears,, just trying to find something that I could afford that would last. things are better now, but I cannot ever forget those days!
My family enjoys Rice, cabbage, and tuna. The only thing we have to cook is the rice (in the rice cooker). Chop the cabbage. Open the tuna (served room temp). Sprinkle on soy sauce (I require amino acids instead - gluten free alternative). Costs us less than $2. for family of 4.
Some grocery stores - I know Walmart does it - has meat (especially beef) on sale in the mornings that are about to expire. Buy it all up and freeze it. My husband just bought me a deep freezer so I am going to start buying sale meats and making crockpot meals ahead to freeze. We used to live on $50 a month for 3 people. It can be done! Good luck with getting out of debt.
you guys are great! I will be praying for your family. There are a lot more things you can do on the cheap besides those things that will help you mix things up and not get bored. We are a family of 11 plus grammy makes 12 we spend $100 a week. I find it better to watch sales rather than shop costo or sams. Keep up the good work!
@debtisdum The Schmoyers are awesome! :) One of my favorite vlogs. Just found your channel tonight. We are working on our snowball too, and I love all the encouragment from the Dave Ramsey fans out there in youtube land.
@alexabreana Yes I will do a video on us making each recipe and the cost break down. Great idea!!! As for drinks, my girls don't care for pop. They drink a lot of water and have milk for breakfast and dinner. So for drinks it's 1 gallon of milk per week ($2.50). That's it!
@danaschmoyer I have watched your debt free scream video and it absolutely lit my fire! Congrats you guys and for reassuring me that beans and rice isn't so bad! :) Best of luck on the move!
I'm sending some of your videos like this to my friends and family to inspire them to spend less on groceries. As a family of 4 we spend around $40 a week on all of our groceries.
WOW!! I can't belive you can eat for $22 a week.. We are a family of 5, live in San Diego and I spend $800.00 a month on food.. also at costco... will be learning a lot from you guys.. great job, love, love your videos...
buy turkey when on sale. cut it off the bone and cut it into bite size pieces and freeze them in meal size portions. make stir fries, turkey nuggets. Cook the breasts in slow cooker and shred it like you do with the chicken. 88 cents a lb for a 10 lb turkey and you can get about 10 meals . Then take the bones skin and scrap meats put it in a pot with water, onions carrots celery salt and pepper boil till meat falls off the bone. Strain and freeze all this for turkey soup, gravy, or just for plain stock in some meals. You can refreeze the turkey if it will be used in 3 months with no problem. Buy cheap cuts of roasts and cook them in the slow cooker and you can shred them as well. Works out cheaper than chicken many times. Adds more variety to sandwiches than just chicken or poultry.
Would dry beans be a better deal? All you have to do is soak them overnight and season and cook them the next day. If you have a pressure cooker, even better.
$22 a week is very impressive. That's about how much I spend for just myself. My brother likes to eat out a lot, he tells me I eat like a Franciscan monk, but you know what? I'm able to buy the things I want with all the money I'm saving. I like to cook up 4 cups of with with 6lbs of beans and eat it through out the week. I eat eggs and oatmeal for breakfast and either chicken or fish with ramen noodles for lunch. Spending $400 a month on food is absurd when you're just going to poop it out anyways.
I see the kids getting burned out first lol but I'm excited to see how you make it work. A lot of cultures don't eat meat all the time because of the cost so I see this working out. Can't wait to see the recipe vlogs!
I SO LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! Keep them coming! You are brave, semi crazy (that's what I love!) and grrreat role models! Wondering if you are using any DIY cleaners or un-paper products (cloth napkins, cloth paper towels, etc) I recently started using DIY cleaners saw on "CLEAN MY SPACE" youtube video. and I highly recommend! Just using baking soda and vinegar saves TONS! Good luck wow only a little farther to go to FREEEEEEDOM!
MMMmmmm...Rice and Beans. I have been on a $5 max per dinner for a family of five budget for YEARS. Never really felt held back by it. We eat so well, in season veggies are cheap and I get sale meat.
@alexabreana I was thinking that but you get 2 more pounds when you cook them yourself. (3lb vs. 5lb.) I will throw the difference in our rice and bean dinners. BUT the costco chickens are crazy good!!!
I am guessing you are taking a break from Emealz then? I thought we were doing well at $48 a week for two of us! I would try to trim it down more, but I know us and if we did that, we would end up falling off the budget. Good job though, guys! It will be worth it in the long run!
can you show us the food when its done? would love to see this... what about drinks? Drinks are big in my house.. can you share what you do for drinks? thanks
good for you guys and best of luck. I think your a little crazy being so excited to go on budget but i hope it works out. I do have one question though, have you ever tried or thought about saving money in other ways besides food? I have been living for about 3-4 months now cable free. We cut our cable because we were paying for content we don't really use both me and the wife watch netflix so we kept internet access and netflix($14)and i really have not missed it as i am saving about $100/month
Natalie Jane When you dont have your own car, its much harder, but not impossible to make ends meet. I remember when my son was younger in the winter months, catching the bus & dragging grocery home
Do you have a separate budget for soap, toiletpaper etc. or is this included in the 70 dollars? I made a total household budget and haven't seperated food from the other necessities (yet).
granted you got kids but my setup is like this we both have cell phones on a family plan that includes unlimited calls and text to any cell on any carrier, we have netflix disc+instant, and i have an apple tv with loads of content from netflix hulu itunes all straight to my tv. Have to say we have soo much content i don't miss cable for a second and saving loads of cash. I think you should consider at least the savings that you can get with this rout might even shorten the time of your budget...
@lynncrum Welcome to our channel! I coupon here and there. I spend a lot of time editing videos and chasing kids to and from school. Also I give as much as I can to our church which leaves me with very little time to coupon. It is a dream of mine though some day to see how much I could save! Do you know of any fantastic YT channels that could teach me a thing or two?
I tried this diet for a while but I can't do it anymore. I don't feel like I am getting adequate nutrition or calorie intake. It works temporarily to get some cash flow going but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone on a consistent basis. I try to spend no more than $45 to $50 a week on groceries. Saving money is important but so is adequate nutrition. When you guys did this, did you only eat just chicken, rice and beans?

Yes, I can relate. Sometimes hard to eat healthy with limited funds.

It helps when a couple is on the same page, makes the journey smoother
If you have the store Aldi where you live, they are way cheaper than Walmart and Costco!
I love your ideas. I always think cheap doesn't mean healthy but I love your cheap healthy meal ideas.
Now tell me please how you include breakfasts and lunches and snacks for two growing boys, ages 12 and 8? I'm serious here

I would never look at beans and rice as a cheap man's dinner. I just freaking love this in general!! lol
Lol at 3:54, that's how I'd look after deciding to eat rice and beans too
WOW!! I can't belive you can eat for $22 a week.. We are a family of 5, live in San Diego and I spend $800.00 a month on food.. also at costco... will be learning a lot from you guys.. great job, love, love your videos...
Just stumbled across these videos. Love how you work as a family. I'm so inspired.

Holla! Did you share the link to the recipe/budget for the week? Come on you know you want to...and I would love to see it! Help a sister out ;)
Costco sells the chicken already made for $5.00 each.. why not use this chicken instead of cooking in croc pot.. just a suggestion..
wow. I am at 50 bucks per week.. and I live alone. :( I can do better I see.
what about weight gain from all the starches????
I did the low budget thing and have struggled to not gain weight. thanks

Charmaine Banks
@angiegal71 I love everything about this comment! In the worst of times (financially) you shine! You are an inspiration girlfriend!!!
I could easily do this. There's no way I could get my husband to eat this constantly.
Is the $22 a week only for dinners? What about breakfast and lunch and snacks, and beverages?
She's kind of cute.

Try soaking, fermenting and sprouting. That'll give you extra nutrition with the same amount of food! God Bless!
Not making fun of you...but as for my..family eating beans i need to invest a gas mask lmao..
after so much rice this people are gonna end up speaking spanish lol....
So you went from $22 per week to $300+ per week and back into full debt - no wonder Josh took off.
Where did they go? A new channel ?
Any examples of food blogs rather than just you talking to the camera?
Oh, and a type 1 diabetic husband who cannot eat rice and pasta every day
Botox anyone? I would start that budget.
U move your forehead up a lot no wonder your forehead is so lined and wrinkly...
And you spew hate, so it's no wonder your life is miserable and empty. Find Jesus, friend. Soon, there won't be any time left!
