John Maroun is not St. Maroun. John Maroun is the first patriarch of the Maronite Church who probably made it a church. It was only some kind of Syriac monastic order or an unofficial Christian sect before Rome appointed Him. St. Maroun is the Syriac Monk who founded Maronism, or the Maronite order, through his disciples. Although John Maroun is their first patriarch, the establishers of the church, according to the Maronites, are St. Maroun, Peter the Apostle (who is the first holder of all Antiochian bishoprics or patriarchates) and of course, Jesus Christ.

My Ant Sabrina who married my Uncle Robert, was a Maronite Christian from Baghdad, Iraq. Sadly, she is no longer with us. I was just a child when my uncle announced that he was getting married to a woman from Iraq he'd only known a short time. You can imagine the shockwaves that sent through our family. "She's only marrying you to become an American", everyone told him. Well, their marriage lasted for several decades until she passed away from cancer. The story I heard was that she was studying in the United States when her parents told her to come back to Baghdad because they'd found someone for her to marry that she apparently did not want to marry. So she asked her brother who was also studying in the United States, if he knew any good American men. He introduced her to my uncle, and the rest is history. They had four children. Now this was around the time that Saddam Hussein came to power in Iraq and from what I understand he treated the Maronite minority in Baghdad very poorly, so she may have had another incentive for not going back, but at the time the only story I heard was about not wanting to get married to the man her parents had selected. At any rate, she never did go back to Iraq. I do remember when my uncle made the announcement everybody said, "Baghdad? Where's that?" because back in the 1960's very few Americans had ever heard of Baghdad let alone Iraq. The fact that my uncle was Roman Catholic and she was Maronite was a big plus because that meant that there were no religious obstacles to the marriage as the Maronites are part of the Catholic Church, just a different rite. Anyway, that is the first I ever heard of the Maronites.
I have actually been researching the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic religions for almost 2 years. I’m really intrigued about the history of the maronites, There is a church here in Phoenix, Arizona that I’m sure goes through the Latin liturgy. I watch their services on Facebook. I really want to visit the church in person at some point 😎
Please go there. I'm delighted to be able to participate in Latin Mass with live Gregorian Chants. I'm able to concentrate way better than during Pope Paul VI rite of 60s (mainstream, modernist). It's so beautiful that sometimes I cry. One girl sings Angus Dei in such a way that it melts my heart. Watching Holy Mass on video is like watching a performance. Can be inspirational, i.e. for people unable to participate. Being there is participation. I recommend you lectures on Syriac spirituality by Chorbishop Seely Beggiani. God bless you.
good video, but you have some information mixed up, as for the maronites originated from mountains of lebanon, and only St Maroun and st Jhon Maroun were from antioque (or Antakia), and at that time it was the state of Antioque and not Syria (there was nothing called syria back then). St Maroun (known as the father of the Maronite faith) came from Antioque to the Mountains of Lebanon with few followers (monks) after the big discussion of the nature of Christ and his identity that took place in Antioque (and there are a lot of discussion about the reason why he left), and that s in the 5th century. Later on in the 7th century, and after the followers of st Maroun started preaching around mountains of Lebanon and specially in Antioque and forming the monasteries, where st John Maroun was educated, and known as a highly strategical leader in religion and arm, and in that period in parallel with the arab expansion, St john Maroun, was known as the leader of the people, whilst the patriarch of Constantinople (today Instanbul), started losing control over Antioque and the rest of the East (what lead later to the clash between king of Constantinople and the St John Maroun). It s said that St John Maroun was the leader of the Maradites of the mountains, or mentioned in History as 'maradit mar youhana maroun', what later lead into St John Maroun to be 'Elected' as the patriarch of Antioque and the rest of the East (since at that time the patriarch used to be elected and not assigned), and he brought the skull of St Maroun (hemit mar maroun) and put it in the monastery of Kfarhay, and later to be known as st John Maroun the father of the maronite church and (this is imp) the father of the ideology that is 'the Mountains is and for ever be the home of the Maronite' , that is why the Maronite people hold that much power in the mountain, hence later in the forming of great Lebanon. And on a side note, the reason why the Arabs never liked the Maronite through history, was because they were the only Christians in the middle east that never submitted as 'ahel zemme'.
Thank you for helping to clarify. I did however mention that today's Maronites are all from Lebanon, but that the original founders came from Antioch. I call it Syria because the general area has been called by Syria, Aram, and other names for some time, and that my audience will know obviously where Syria is. And yes, Maronite identity and politics is all based heavily on Jabal Libnan. That is why I made this video, Maronites are extremely different to your average Arab Orthodox or Catholic from Syria or Jordan. Maronites are essentially an ethno-religious group, they've just lost the ability of Syriac. If they still spoke it, people would see them like the Assyrians or Arameans
@@Jeem196 yeah man, i liked this video's concept, a lot of the new generation not really got the grip about the whole history thing, and in which in my opinion is quite essential for our present. keep up the good work.
@@Jeem196 yes I am Maronite from both sides, and from a very old family from the mountains. Although history is not my professional field, but I have a lot of research about Lebanese people and land history, after all we are currently one of the oldest people that existed by the known history, and we currently have Byblos THE oldest 'constantly' inhabited city as well. And Lebanese people in general are descended from this heritage and we re not anything else as ethnicity , now they color us by other ethnicity for political reason, that s a different story..
@@mariohaykal2543 I appreciate this video and your comment. Since you did research, have some valuable knowledge would you please publish more about it, perhaps you both could cooperate? I like lectures on Syriac spirituality by Chorbishop Seely Beggiani. I found Maronites because of St. Charbel and looking for language closest to Jesus' Aramaic. Is Syrian the Eastern dialect of Aramaic? I love translating, this is very interesting to me.
The Byzantines saw themselves as the only true Christianity (this was pre-Schism) and they accused the Maronites of holding onto heresy. I believe they accused them of being Monophysites, saying they were in the same heresy as the Copts and Syriac Orthodox. It wasn't true however, as the Syriac Orthodox aka Jacobites had their own battles with the Maronites over perceived heresy. This, combined with the new arrival of Islam, is the reason the Maronites flocked to Mount Lebanon and converted the locals, instead of just being spread out in N. Syria
I wonder what does the Maronite Archbishop and bishop thinks about Pope Francis on blessing homosexuals? Do they back up the decision or are they against it?
Hey Jeem the Maronite liturgy was heavily changed over the decades by the Roman Catholic Church. I wouldn’t say they have maintained thier right from charbel in his skeet
How I wish you would use traditional rite. I'm RC and changes done since 60s by modernists (heretics) are huge. After being protestantized in RC I went 'searching' around. I returned thanks to Latin Holy Mass which gives proper reverence to God (texts of prayers are created in such a way), allows to focus more, ensures Transubstantiation happens all the time. While the rite of pope Paul VI changes idea of Holy Mass from sacrifice to party, allowed for abominations happening now. The Transubstantiation will happen is supposed to happen depending on priests intentions, not saying the right words like in Tridentina.
@@RG-iw7py they should return to the syriac liturgy of Saint James they used when they were under the Antiochian Patriarchate. Prior to the ecclesiastical schism when Bishop John was selected. But history is history and money, politics and power will never let this happen.

Proud maronite
Jeem..Please...I'm begging You to tell Me the name of the music pieces in Your video, it's been months now....🤷🏾♂️
What’s your perspective on Protestant???? You should make a vid on that
Proud to be Maronite! ✝️
My dear friend some of your information is incorrect.
@@AM-zh6nj You're right. Give him a time to connect dots. He seen the treasure, needs to go there to acquire it:)
good video, but you have some information mixed up, as for the maronites originated from mountains of lebanon, and only St Maroun and st Jhon Maroun were from antioque (or Antakia), and at that time it was the state of Antioque and not Syria (there was nothing called syria back then).
@@mariohaykal2543 Thanks my man. Are you Maronite yourself if I may ask? I'm from a mixed maronite-orthodox-melkite family
@3:58 How did the Byzantines try to eradicate the Maronites? What did they do to them, exactly?
The Byzantines saw themselves as the only true Christianity (this was pre-Schism) and they accused the Maronites of holding onto heresy. I believe they accused them of being Monophysites, saying they were in the same heresy as the Copts and Syriac Orthodox. It wasn't true however, as the Syriac Orthodox aka Jacobites had their own battles with the Maronites over perceived heresy. This, combined with the new arrival of Islam, is the reason the Maronites flocked to Mount Lebanon and converted the locals, instead of just being spread out in N. Syria
@@Jeem196 Wow! That's interesting. Thank you, I never knew that.
How do you feel about the Neocathechumanal way within the Catholic Church?

I wonder what does the Maronite Archbishop and bishop thinks about Pope Francis on blessing homosexuals? Do they back up the decision or are they against it?
What was he doing with ibin saud?? Just b curious
Please tell Me the name of the music.

Ah yes the maronite my favourite branch of Catholic
I think you are confusing Saint Maron and Saint John Maron a little bit at the beginning.
Good catch, thanks for reminding me. I do get the two confused sometimes
What's the difference?
@@erojerisiz1571 St Maron is the founder of Maronitism and St John Maron is the first Maronite Patriarch
Maronite 🙏🏻❤️
Just looked up Lebanon on the Wikipedia I knew nothing about it then saw Maronites wondered WTF is that
Were Maronites and Jacobites in conflict at one time?
These are the Lebanese I am most familiar with.
Are Arameans and Maronites the same ?
are eastern catholics non Chalcedon ?
no, those are only the OO and Assyrian church of the east
As Saudi, i wish Lebanon stays on Fiuad Chehab Era. Lebanon was completely different when Maronites ruled it ☹️
Please elaborate on it. I'm Polish and intrigued what was better?
@@RG-iw7py the country was entirely on different spectrum during 1940-1960 it was paradise “eden of the middle east” till waves of PLO was formed from refugees during 1948 war and also waves from those who have been deported from Jordan and Syria. Country back then were enriching with very tolerant cultural vibes & engaging happy societies regardless of religion. Not to mention the surplus economy offering decent jobs pay for job seekers and business opportunities for the rich. Even most world figures residing in Lebanon that era due to what i have mentioned above. till PLO ignited the spark when several gun men from islamic background walked into church and plan to shoot everyone in place. This is when things start to collapse and genocide occurring during after 1960 till 1975 or more. That when golden era was a history.
I am no Lebanese though but i love history especially countries that has been to similar situation like Lebanon.
@@Krist_Mal008 Thank you very much for your comment, connecting dots for me:) I'm Polish, please feel free to ask any question about my history.
@@Krist_Mal008 Fun fact: Tatars started settling in Poland & Lithuania in XVII century, got same rights as local nobility. Some are our WWII heroes, were in 'NSZ' our top military force. Even Germans stated in their reports this organization had the best professionals, great patriots fighting nazi & commies alike. Unfortunately commies won revolution, spread their mistakes all over the world and you won't hear that. They rule Poland to date, do smear campaign about our heroes.
@@RG-iw7py i am glad information was valuable to you. Much love to Poland. I would love to visit Warsaw. Wanted to apply for a job there☹️

Maronites and Chaldeans are the only latinized Oriental Catholics while the Syriac, Coptic, and Byzantine Catholics retain their own traditions by avoiding any latinizations.
🇱🇧🙏👌💪
I'm greek catholic and just found out that our maronites brothers are more catholic than us 😂
Maronites should start speaking Syriac language again. They are not Arabs but Phoenicians and should abandon that imposed language
I've long heard that Maronites were in Lebanon before Arabs and Arabic.
