I remember as a kid I would go back from school and spend my day watching szin's animatics trying to replicate their art style lmao. Nowdays this side of UA-cam has changed a lot, but it still has a lot of creativity and skill in it, and I love it so much

In my opinion these 4 musicals were a jumping off point. It's not that this era of animatics died they just splintered off into smaller fandoms. There was no longer this one musical EVERYONE made animatics for.
Szins candy store animatic was the one that got me into both animatics and musicals. Those 4 musicals Heathers especially blew everything out of the water

watching this brought me BACK. i used to spend hoursss watching the hamilton animatics especially the ones by galactibun! my friends joke that my artstyle now is very "hamilfandom tumblr" but little do they know that's exactly what it is. it remains with me even 5-6 years later :)

I’d do recall the obsession with Musical Animatics and then there’s the short lived revival of the Musical/Quirky Comical Skit Animatics thanks to The Dream SMP
I believe that many musicals (hadestown etc) could have been just as iconic towards animatics and musical culture, but like many say the community is smaller and more fractured, focusing on separate musicals instead of descending on one and focusing on it for a while

It's very weird to me that Hadestown wasn't more popular with the musical community. I went to a Broadway dance night at a local music venue, and they didn't play a single song from it! Not even after I requested it! Someone told me that was a deep-cut, and I was like, ??? It won the Tony for best musical that year. It's also fucking brilliant. I just don't get it!
The Minecraft UA-cam community is still swimming in animatics lmao- and ESPECIALLY when there’s a Life Series going on.
Claudia Caucace changed my BRAIN CHEMISTRY with their More Than Survive and Squip Song animatics. I feel like this era made animatics more important to me than oxygen at the time, and to this day im still determined to make something that does justice to all of these artists who shaped my childhood.

As a person who discovered musicals and animatics VERY late, I’m pretty sad that these kinds of animatics aren’t that famous anymore, but I’m still glad that these pieces of art still exists within the internet and a few fans holding the fandom together. I am one of the few people holding tons of dead fandoms by creating animatics.
Until this day I’m still holding a grudge against myself that I found this animatic renaissance VERY VERY late 🥲
i was not a part of this, but i can say it was a really big part of my childhood that motivated me to learn animation as well as animated memes (or whatever theyre called idk), also great video have a nice day:]
The fandoms were HUGE and was growing so fast. Still cant believe I saw this happen in real time. I wanted to draw animatics so bad I spent hours on flip a clip but thank goodness I never posted any. Still I wanted to really interact with the fandom and I did that by downloading amino.

O. M. G. i can’t believe someone made a video about this!!!!!! it’s kind of niche and i don’t see people talk about it a lot but it was a very iconic time. i honestly hope there’s another big boom of popularity of musical animatics someday. there’s a lot of newer sorta popular musicals like ride the cyclone (i would know, i made animatics for them lol) etc that i hope get more popular enough to have such iconic animatics lol
Man, the animatic Renaissance literally defined me for who I am today. Because of those animatics, I'm now in school for animation and want to make animatics professionally. You hit the nail perfectly with this video, tho as other people have mentioned, animatics are still very much active, but now there's no one fandom anymore. Probably the closest was with the dsmp, but now thats died and it's just mcyt which has many subfandoms. There is also the rise of people making OC animatics (such as myself lol) which like you said stemmed from Heathers. I think that animatics just stopped being it's own fandom, but instead became normal parts of fandoms. You can type in any fandom and guaranteed someone's made an animatic for it.
Also I heavily relate to picturing an animatic in your head when listening to music. I literally made a playlist for songs I want to turn into animatics that I'll play during car rides lol.

This brought back so many memories!! I actually got into Heathers in 2016, and watched SO MANY animatics, which is how I found out about Be More Chill! (DEH and Hamilton came to me a bit later via friends) While I didn't get too much farther into brodway and theater fandom, that was such a fun time, and a really great intro do the world of musical theater fandom!
Okay I am also a huge fan of this stuff, and I have noticed something recently. There is a not yet released musical called Epic that has some extremely awesome animatics with it. The music slaps and it’s overall emotional and just awesome.
I will have to look into that musical! I heard a few people mention it, are there any songs from the musical you recommend?
@@lemoncakess I have seen a few on one song called "Warriors of the Mind", pretty good. I think one animator has most of the songs from the first few parts of the musical animated.

god i remember this era of youtube, was amazing! inspired me into drawing more, and i like to think of it as the reason I even have the tiniest bit of drawing skills today lol
I LOVED animatics (and still do) As a german I never really have the opportunity to see a musical live so it's always either slime tutorials or animatics for me and while slime tutorials are good to understand the whole context of the story and get dialog scenes of the musical that are not in the songs, they tend to have pretty bad quality.
But animations are just great - you don't just get visuals that you miss out on when just listening to the soundtrack but you also get new interpretations of scenes and comments from the artists on specific moments (all the times we get a close-up on laurens when angelica sings 'sadisfied', the looks from micheal to jeremy when he talks about christine).
Animatics are such a great way to enjoy a musical, because the artist can draw so many details while keeping the story and the context of the song the same (or changing it all, I've once seen an animatic where Jefferson dressed up as Maria Reynolds to seduce Hamilton - wilde times, I tell you guys)
tbh i think a big reason why there hasn't been another musical so far is because none can really build such a big fandom.
Mean Girls falters on a few songs but has fantastic moments and is probably best suited to people who already love the film - musical fans are more likely to turn to heathers I think.
Six is a super interesting musical (I would even describe it as quite experimental) but the characters aren't very fleshed out, they all just have a character song and it doesn't tell a closed story with a beginning, main part and ending but is more like a feminist study on the wives of king henry xiii
Hadestown has fantastic and beautiful animatics, but it's mostly mythology fans and percy jackson fans who really interact with the animatics
Heathers, Dear Evan Hanson, and Be More Chill, on the other hand, are all high school musicals with mostly normal kids with normal problems (minus the murders and the supercomputer from Japan) like mental health, first relationships, friendships and all. Also, the characters are here a lot more worked out and interact with each other - we actually get to know the characters and can form a sort of relationship with them (anne boleyn remains anne boleyn at the end of the musical, tho now viewed in a different context but hamilton becomes alexander, whose political career we followed, whose children we have met and whose death we witness)
And above all: don't underestimate the power of shipping and edgy teen boys like JD - back then almost everyone had a crush on JD or Micheal and so many shipped Evan and Connor or Micheal and Jeremy or Laurens and Hamilton (2023 me looking back at those times: yikes, why did I do that? Those were founding fathers. They had slaves)
But I have to agree I miss the times with musicals animatics everywhere, now you have a few artists for every musical which is still great but not so interconected and big - It was fun following the musical obsessions of every artist.

(Also 7:36 yep, that happens to me as well. And not just with musical songs, but with so many songs I listen to and I don't even draw. Still, glad I'm not the only one)

I remember way before the hamilton movie came out, my history teacher showed our class a compilation of a bunch of animatics. That was what got me into this stuff haha!

At the beginning of COVID shutdown I watched Hamilton for the first time completely through musicals. Then I proceeded to become a bug fan of it. Afterwards I became a fan of the spongebob musical, beetlejuice, Heather's, be more chill, and then dear evan hansen. I never got to the point of making animaniacs but the ones I saw for these musicals did inspire me to draw more. Currently I love watching animaniacs of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles and I'm trying to draw out my ideas for animatics following the art style of the show to songs from Epic the musical. I've definitely come a long way from 2019.

I was there during the Animatic Renassaince and it was my ENTIRE PERSONALITY (musical theatre hyperfixation moment), all I wanted was to create animatics too 😭 my queen Ziksua deserved a mention too, for me Szin and Ziksua were carrying the Hamilton fandom. And I just want to say that, after years obssesed with animatics, I'm now going to study storyboard art 😌 shot out to every animatic artist on youtube that made me take this path!!!
And idk if it's just me, but Epic the Musical is having HUGE success and I'm seeing sooo many animatics with its music and it makes me insanely happy 😭

Szin got me to watch Hamilton! Still prefer the animatics, lol. Not that I didn't also enjoy the musical, but... Seems to me animatics are still going strong; they're just not centered around musicals so much anymore. They also got me to watch "Good Omens" (great decision, by the way), and I've seen a bunch for like The Magus Archives. So it's more like live-action and podcasts these days. Oh, but there IS the UA-cam channel Rambu, who like... They've got this series of animatics, "Musical Pipers," which are set in their own world where it's like these rat-people (Ratians, I believe it was) go to a performing arts school; the characters do scenes from musicals, but they're characters in their own right, too. It's pretty cute! I especially like the one they did for Beetlejuice.

I will say, the animatic musical community also left me with having boards when i listen to music but it did help me discover my passion for animation and considering it as a field.
I think another reason why these musicals are not as popular is because they're not...that good? Heathers is based on an 80s movie so it gets a little bit of a pass for having certain things in it and be more chill is just a very good musical with incredible neurodivergent/autistic coding (talking about jeremy),.
But hamilton.....having poc play slave owners was....a choice, having a musical about slave owners it's just.......weird. The whole concept is just so odd, I'm not saying we can't have historical media just that having that media being about someone who did A TON of harm is just...weird. I don't fault the people who regretted having an hamilton phase because of it (this comes from someone who did have an hamilton phase btw). DEH, I think you explained well enough in the video why is bad, but dang does good for you goes hard

Fun Fact about Anidoodles: They actually worked on a great webtoon called muted! If you like withes and wlw plot lines I 100% recommend it, be warn though that the webtoon contains deceptions of abuse!!
CRYPTIDW00RM is actually still active online just focuses more on other fandoms, especially the magnus chase trilogy. They have improved so much and his art style is so much more dynamic and colorful than ever, seriously if u liked his old work you're going to LOVE their current works.

@@lemoncakess you should!!! Muted has such a pretty art style and I love how you can see how much they've improved!! I'm also positive they're currently helping their spouse with another webtoon but it's more adult oriented and more graphic.
As for cryptworm, SERIOUSLY HIS ART HAS IMPROVED SO MUCH!! It's seriously so fun to look at: the colors, the composition, the poses are so dynamic is just so UGH! it's seriously soooo good, they're still kinda active on his UA-cam channel though they upload rarely (rightfully so I believe they're now in college) but it does some tutorials on his compositions and face expression and I think they're really freaking good! It does have an animatic that is still magnus chase related but maaaan, you can tell they've done this for years because is such a well done animatic
