    They actually imply that Pacino's character was the KILLER in the last few scenes

    Heat isn’t a good movie? That’s insanity. Pacino is FANTASTIC in this film.

    • @dieschattenzeit
      @dieschattenzeit 2 місяці тому

      I actually think that Heat is a fantastic movie IN SPITE OF Pacino’s performance. It was Pacino at peak, coke-fueled (by his admission), cartoonish histrionics, the beginning of the end after years of far better, nuanced acting from him.
      The go-to, “roaring moron” Pacino impression of “She’s got a GRRRREAT ASS!” is from Heat and sums up his entire role in it. The entire film is a moody, atmospheric, slowburn that ramps up to one of the greatest bank robbery/public shootout scenes ever, but all of this is nearly derailed every time the narrative returns to Pacino’s character. He and DeNiro are meant to be these two powerful presences, foils for each other, that eventually meet in the restaurant scene that’s meant to be the epitome of tension.
      DeNiro is his typical, stoic self and though he’s arguably not doing much, his strong, silent type is elevated to masterful in comparison to Pacino’s psychotic tantrums. There’s a few plot holes, mainly with Kilmer’s side story (which is barely fleshed out, a bit tacked on, and could have been cut in my opinion), but the pacing, cinematography, setpieces, and, again, mood (Mann’s specialty) all make it highly enjoyable.
      I would not call anyone who doesn’t think it’s great insane, though; as it’s genuinely flawed and these flaws are rarely spoken about amidst all the endless praise for it, some deserved, some not. It’s a classic, but only if you lije the stuff it does great enough for it to negate the things it does poorly.

    Using the excuse of the state of Val Kilmer' elbow (which I think you only see in one scene) to say that 'Heat' isn't a great film is utterly ridiculous! "They never acknowledge it" There's no need! 😅

    Heat is one of Dan's top three favorite films, and yet he's somehow under the impression that Michael Madsen was in it (7:57)

    • @dieschattenzeit

      I chalked that up to him merely misspeaking and meaning a different actor, but then when they call Liz she says Michael Madsen also. I genuinely questioned my own memory/sanity for a second. That was odd that she said it, too.

    I recently watched Cruising for the first time, and I definitely was not ready for what it was. I’m a fan of the director and his other works, but that said, it was an intense movie keeping in mind the story of a cop doing such a thing to go undercover to catch a murderer. Definitely not a movie for the weak.

    Have to agree, Heat is good but it is overrated. People tend to gush over the fact Pacino n De Niro share screen time (hardly any) and the heist scene. Nice cinematography, enjoyable but not this epically fantastic film.

    Heat IS overrated, but's it's also a great movie. It's entertaining as hell and has inspired other great heist/bank robbery movies - The Town, Den of Thieves (owes the entire opening to Heat). Michael Mann does overwrought silky stuff in all of his movies, but he's at his best with that sleekness in Heat. I wouldn't say Heat is one of the all-time great movies, but it's one of my favorite movies and always will be. Team Dan.
