That’s the best explanation for mites I’ve heard. It’s all so conflicting when you try to read up on it but this makes total sense. Thank you for some clarity!

If you want to make the fruit fly feeding easier, you can anesthetize them by placing them in a fridge/freezer. That's what I had to do while working on a breeding project in my genetics class

This video was actually perfect in helping me. I threw like 7 cricket eggs in my T. Stirmi enclosure because its warm and humid (I heard it's perfect for crickets to hatch so I wanted to see if it would work) but noticed small white mites. I put a water droplet on the back of my phone camera to turn it into a microscope and they look like the mites in your video, white with a red or brown dot on the back. Hearing you say they should be harmless made me feel better 😂 thank you

    Love your videos SO much!!
I was wondering if you could do/have ever thought of doing a video about what it's like being a mother in the tarantula hobby? I've encountered many strange looks or harsh opinions from other moms when they learn my hobby is caring for venomus arachnids and I'm super curious about your perspective!!
    Sending much love!!

We don't really have any wild caught jumping spiders (Phidippus) here in germany all you can get are offsprings from the same few that got imported years ago. We have some from the Bahamas, Apalachicola (Nord Florida) and some other places in Florida. They're also pretty exotic and expensive for such short living spiders so not that many people keep them as pets. But the good thing is that you always know exactly how old they are and where they come from. The husbandry and breeding is also not really difficult so thats a win. x)

Also, if you see a lot of spring tails on your tarantula, maybe checknit out. I saw this once and I was looking cause he was in semi- death curl. He did unfortunately pass away, and I thought it was just dehydration from after his molt. Well, when I preserved him in resin, I saw a crack/cut on his carapace, right by where the spring tails were communing. I think he had trouble with his molt and got injured, and the spring tails were atracted to the leaking haemolymph.

From what I've heard, if you cut one of the holes on the lid on the fruit flies and bung it with a cotton ball, when you want one you can just pull the cotton ball out and use the 2 or 3 that are on it :)
    Awesome video as usual!

If you do have a large mite population and you are concerned that they are affecting your invert, you can also introduce a predatory mite such as Phytoseiulus sp. These mites will hunt down and kill any other mites in the container and then live on as a clean-up crew. Although they do sometimes make a home on the invert too, as is the case with my Hissing Roaches. However, they don't cause the roaches any harm. They do take a couple of weeks to reproduce in big enough numbers to impact the other mites' population but they are very effective and remove the need to dry out a container which might put an invert at risk of dying from desiccation. Also, they can be a bit pricey for tight budgets. Hope that helps.

Most mites outside of Ts natural habitat, are infact mostly herbivores and occasionally scavengers. They will attach themselves to larger animals to catch a ride to whereever has better living conditions. Mites will try to leave the habitat when there is TOO much moisture or fungus spores. Very interesting animals actually. Im certain some dude who work with mites have a post about them on arachnoboards if anyone wants better explanation!

I had mites in my Ceratogyrus Darlingi enclosure for some reason the enclosure wouldn’t dry out, that coupled with the fact that I left a dead roach in there caused mites to multiply and feed on the roach.

Try dumping your fruit flies into your auxiliary feeding container outside that way if they run free, that mess is outside. Then try putting your separated out fruit flies in the fridge for 5min before feeding. Slows them down, you can easily dump them into your spiders enclosure and they will not be all over the place. Cheers :)

Mites are just the absolute worst they get everywhere I get them in my sling enclosures the vials if use slightly more moisture for the Asian species and then slightly miss any parts of boluses then bang an outbreak of mites it's a real pain but the good thing is that 90% of mites are harmless and are just scavengers

Have you ever had them escape an enclosure and get out into your house? Can they climb acrylic or glass? I'm in an apartment building and that's the one thing I worry about is winding up with a mite infestation. I already keep feeders in a container inside a container to make sure they go nowhere lol

Im glad peaches is doing well she looks like a much happier spider now. also fruit flys they are a giant pain in the butt what I do is make a hole like 3cm round in the lidve their container and plug it w/ a piece of sponge. then you get a upside down spiderlet pot and use it to push sponge to the side a bit so you make a gap the flys will crawl through and the only place they can go is into the pot. but you would probaly have to make the hole before all the flys have hatched else they would all escape its not my idea I bought fruit fly pots that were already like it and it works really well so even tho the pots I get now dont have sponge I put one in myself

I really enjoy this channel! The information is given in a way that is really digestible for a newbie T owner. I'm inspired by Salem to ask a question about G. Pulchra (I got 2 slings as my first 2 tarantulas). One of the two buried itself completely. Like I can't even see it. It went into its hide and completely closed off the opening and hasn't come out in like 6 weeks. The other one did that, too but it went in later and has come back out. I don't want to disturb the one that's still buried if it's alive and doing its thing but I don't want to leave it in there indefinitely if it's dead. How long should I wait to check it out? If it's dead in there, will there be a smell? It's a 1 inch sling.

Kat i just got my tarantula back off my dad as my quarter master wouldn't let me have my tarantula in my army room. However i got her back now she look liked she been well feed and he seemed to do a fairly ok job looking after her but i noticed loads off mites in the tank. They look like grey small long things. They don't seem to be bothering the tarantula. The substrate is dry because that what she always seem to prefer i use coconut husk. Do you think it be ok to leave it for another 2 weeks or should i clean out the tank now
