There are perhaps no movie characters more iconic than C.U.M. (otherwise known as the Classic Universal Monsters) and there is perhaps no better way to meet em than with a spooky marathon. From Frankenstein (and his… monster’s bride?) to the Wolf Man, if you’re not hiding behind your Dracula cape by the end then you’re doing something wrong. Grab yourself a drink & some Mummy / Invisible Man bandages and join me & Miles as we brave the ultimate C.U.M.-a-thon!
Plots (via Wiki & ChatGPT):
DRACULA
Renfield, a solicitor, travels to Count Dracula's Transylvanian castle. Dracula, disguised as a coach driver, takes Renfield to the castle. Inside, they discuss Dracula's plans to lease Carfax Abbey in England. Dracula hypnotizes Renfield, and they sail to England, where Dracula preys on Lucy and Mina. Renfield, obsessed with consuming insects, reveals his knowledge of vampires. Van Helsing and the others discover Dracula's true nature, leading to a final confrontation in which Van Helsing kills Dracula with a makeshift wooden stake.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
In Paris, at the Opera House, Raoul and Philippe watch Christine's performance. Raoul wants her to quit for their love, but she prioritizes her career. The management resigns due to the Opera Ghost, who pressures Christine to replace the prima donna. During a performance, the Phantom kidnaps Christine. Raoul and Inspector Ledoux track them to the Phantom's lair, where Christine promises to marry him to save Raoul. However, a mob later kills the Phantom.
FRANKENSTEIN
In a Bavarian Alps village, scientist Henry Frankenstein and his assistant Fritz assemble a human body from various body parts. They bring it to life during a lightning storm. The creature appears innocent but is misunderstood, leading to Fritz's death and its escape. It accidentally drowns a girl named Maria, terrifies people, and is blamed for murders. The pursuit ends at a windmill, where the creature is trapped and the structure set on fire. Henry survives a fall, but the creature perishes in the flames.
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN
The Monster survives, and further chaos ensues, leading to encounters with Dr. Frankenstein and Doctor Pretorius. They plan to create a mate for the Monster. After the Bride rejects him, he destroys the laboratory, sacrificing himself and the Bride, allowing Henry and Elizabeth to escape.
THE MUMMY
In 1921, an expedition led by Sir Joseph Whemple discovers the mummy of an Egyptian high priest named Imhotep. Despite Dr. Muller's warnings, Whemple's assistant, Ralph Norton, reads a life-giving scroll, resurrecting Imhotep and driving Norton mad. Ten years later, Imhotep, posing as Ardeth Bey, guides archaeologists to Princess Ankh-es-en-amun's tomb. He falls in love with Helen, believing her to be the princess reincarnated. Imhotep tries to make her immortal, but Helen's prayers to the goddess Isis break his spell. The Scroll of Thoth burns, and Imhotep crumbles to dust, while Helen is saved.
THE INVISIBLE MAN
On a snowy night, a stranger arrives at The Lion's Head Inn and reveals his invisibility, causing panic. This stranger is Dr. Jack Griffin, who discovered invisibility with a drug. Meanwhile, Griffin's fiancée, Flora, grows distressed. Griffin seeks to partner with Dr. Kemp for a reign of terror, but when Kemp betrays him, Griffin goes on a killing spree. Traps are set by the police, leading to Griffin's eventual death.
THE WOLF MAN
Larry Talbot returns to his hometown, falls in love with Gwen, and becomes a werewolf after a fateful encounter with a wolf. He gets warned about his condition by a fortuneteller named Maleva and gives Gwen a protection charm. Larry kills villagers while transformed but remains unaware of his actions. When he realizes his condition and spots a pentagram on Gwen's palm, he gets tied up by his father, John, and transforms, attacking Gwen. Ultimately, his father bludgeons him to death with a silver cane, and Maleva uses a spell to restore his human form.
CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
During an Amazon expedition, scientists discover a fossilized hand with webbed fingers. Dr. Maia visits his friend Dr. Reed to secure funding for a return expedition, while a piscine amphibious humanoid kills Carl's assistants. The new expedition includes David, Carl, David's girlfriend Kay, and Dr. Thompson. They reach the Black Lagoon, encounter the Gill-man infatuated with Kay, capture it, but it escapes and abducts Kay. The scientists rescue her, kill the Creature, and watch its body sink into the lagoon.

Dracula is for real going to Cancelvania and I hate 2 say it
The most heinous monster in the CUM MCU is actually that shrieking woman
Miles and Miles of Texas know what I’m sayin
Honestly respect to the directors for the abrupt THE ENDs lol they didn't waste ANY time back in the days
Dat’s it! Movie’s over! Go home! Scram!
Falling action didn't exist back then. "Monster's dead, GET OUT!"
And we will NOT be crediting the production crew!! 😤
Fuck it. It's over. The end.
Done!
Amazing how well The Invisible Man effects still hold up! I can’t imagine how incredible it was to audiences at the time!
It's genuinely one of my favourite movies of all time! So underrrated nowadays compared to the other classic films
People literally shitting themselves in the aisles
eric PLEASE these titles are really difficult to explain to someone who happens to see the notification pop up
Just scream "Go Tigers!" and everything will work out fine.
I read this in Jillian's voice
If anyones wondering, if i remember correctly the monsters always die because of the hayes code. One of the rules was that the bad guys always had to lose
wild!
This is such a fascinating fact. I had no idea. Thanks for the history.
That's definitely not entirely true since Bride of Frankenstein was the first Universal Monster film to be made during the hayes code era. Everything from Phantom (or technically Hunchback if you wanna count that as well) to The Invisible Man was pre-code.
@@thomasgeorggoenitzer Admittedly, half of them were adapted from books where the monsters *also* died (though not always under the same circumstances.)
The Hayes code was wild cause they also banned depictions of interracial couples
so, phantom of the opera next right? we now HAVE to hear Eric belt out the rest of music of the night
I second this
Literally said "please be the next video" out loud 😭
Please Eric!!!!
i’ve been dying for pmi to do that ever since sweeney todd
Omg yes please! And yes to the person who said Sweeney Tood also!
Classic Universal Monsters was my favourite joke you guys’ve ever done, glad to see a whole video based on it.
Hey lagoon monster, you know what they say, you either C.U.M in the sink or sink in the C.U.M
damn
Interesting facts about Lan Chaney.
- Both of his parents were deaf so from an early age he had to learn how to be more expressive with his face and body, part of the reason he was an outstanding fit for the silent era of films.
- He also did his own makeup and was called The Man of a Thousand Faces.
- "Don't step on that spider! It might be Lan Chaney." was a widespread joke spawned from his reputation with makeup and could be argued to be an early example of a meme.
Sincerely, a Classic Horror Film Nerd with Too Much Time on Her Hands. 😆
That is genuinely really cool!
Classic horror film nerd who spells Lon Chaney's name wrong lol
*Lon
I love how y'all react to Van Helsing like he's a cameo in a Marvel movie lmao
Eric knowing Van Helsing from the Hugh Jackman movie and not the actual 1897 Dracula NOVEL he first appears in is so slay and iconic actually
😌
Also eric being like "will Dracula have no reflection?" As if all the lore of vampires was created in the last 100 years, and not the 1000 years vampires have existed in myth.
that’s not what iconic means
what is he representative of?
@@Texicus_Reddicusmost of traditional vampire lore as we know it actually does come from the Bram Stoker novel tho, not the folklore
The shot of the invisible man unraveling the bandages is so iconic and acted so well, probably my favorite C. U. M. Shot
It’s crazy the amount of people at 7:22 running to smoke out the phantom, idk why but that took me out😂
INSANE
I’m pretty sure back then they literally would just be like
“Hey you, rando on the street, you want 10 cents and a sandwhich” and that’s how they got extras
crowd scenes were a big thing in the 20’s
greatest decade in cinematic history
eric's dedication to singing "bet on it" every time a character looks at their reflection in the water >>>>>>>>>
Ricou Browning played the Gillman in the underwater scenes for The Creature from the Black Lagoon, he could hold his breath up to 4 minutes at a time, and he lived all the way up to this year (2023), RIP
incredible!
In Back to the Future III when Marty is dressed in the 50s cowboy costume, he says "Clint Eastwood never wore anything like this," and Doc doesn't know who that is. There's a poster right next to Marty for Revenge of the Creature from the Black Lagoon which was one of Eastwood's early film roles, uncredited as a lab technician
i’m so happy Eric got his HSM2 moment during Frankenstein
🥹
love that for you! ✨
I need that t-shirt that say “Gerard Butler in the streets, Lon Chaney in the sheets.” and wear it when Phantom comes back to Broadway (RIP)
Not if. When.
that's amazing
2:09 we are all grossly overlooking the “cancel-vania” line, insane
I don't know if it's intentional or a product of age, but the phantom being blurry and distorted from Christine's point of view is genuinely a super cool effect! Like that¨s actually scary as hell!
it was meant to be like that. it’s an effect called soft focus. usually achieved by putting a gauze over the lense of the camera
This couldn't have come out at a better time. I just finished watching the C.U.M. movies tonight
post C.U.M. clarity
We need a Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman, The Mummy 1999, Phantom of the Opera with Gerard Butler reaction
I’d love to see their reaction to the really over-the-top side-characters in Phantom and Gerard’s singing which ppl talk about, although tbf unironically the songs are gorgeous in that movie, and the production design
They've already done one for Van Helsing
The genuine offense in Eric's response when Miles asked "Is that the phantom of the opera?"
The Invisible Man is my personal fav, the special effects alone back in 1933 were mind blowing!!!!!
Edit: also you should react to An American Werewolf in London which is my personal fav werewolf movie and considered one of the best in that genre. The special effects in that film are top tier!!!!
Amen to that, An American Werewolf in London is so fun and super weird they’d have a great time reacting to it, its a special effects galore. And its hilariously off-kilter. Also The Invisible Man 2020 if they haven’t watched that yet becuz i feel thats def one of the best modern remakes of a universal monster.
@@GuineaPigEveryday I agree the 2020 invisible man reboot was surprisingly good, i like what they did with it and it was interesting take on the story. But og is still my fav, fun fact Mark Hamill inspired his joker laugh off of Claude Rains invisible man laugh iconic
I would have killed to see Edward turn into a glittery bat. What a missed opportunity. Bellas personal portable disco ball, hanging in front of her window, casting beautiful refractions onto her as he watches her sleep. Really could've been something.
This honestly should be a bit in 'What we do in the shadows' 😂💙
I could not be happier about you and miles covering absolutely anything
yeah, it was such a treat seeing them covering the films in c.u.m. together
this duo kills me every single time
Well, I’m going to have to listen to this episode with headphones, because I know someone’s gonna walk by and just hear “Dracula” and “C.U.M.”, and be very confused lol
So the way they did the footprints and the snow at the end was they made a double platform type contraption one holding the snow in one that would punch out footprints underneath it so the reason the camera was able to move is because it was all shot in Camera with them punching outthe footprints underneath the floor. And then the same thing was done to simulate the body falling after the gunshot.
I feel like nervous laughing in response to seeing something so wrong and incomprehensible like a mummy getting up and walking away is a pretty realistic reaction.
So many loaded C.U.M. shots left and right that I'm being covered with cinema! Another fantastic video, Eric!
All of the monsters played by their original actors met up in Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein. Ends with a crazy fight. Highly recommend.
Except Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's monster. Glenn Strange played him in the final three films.
@@BrendanJSmith They offered the part to him again but he thought the movie was going to make fun of the monster so he didn't want to
The Invisible Man that came out a few years ago is such a cool take on the concept - highly recommend!
loved it!
The first three Frankenstein movies are legitimately my favorite trilogy in aaaaaaall of movie history.
Extremely based.
I love how you guys call it "SKELLINGTON" instead of Skeleton. The real question is do they KNOW they are doing it
huh
@PrettyMuchIt they're just asking if you know that you're saying "skellington" instead of "skeleton"
Really weird that phantom of the OPERA is a silent film.
false advertising!
dude when I was a wee baba I saw the Phantom of the Opera and was so sad when they yeeted him
The opening to The Mummy is so great. It really sucks that the rest of the movie is almost nothing.
Truly my favorite franchise that PMI has ever attacked 😂 this is my MCU
interesting fact about the invisible man, he has the largest body count out of the universal monsters
(murder wise, not the other kind of body count)
We don’t know.
Eric’s wheeze laugh is one of the greatest sounds in the world
always love miles’s lil freestyle raps lmao
12:12 YES !!! i was waiting for the Dwight Frye realization. he was such an iconic CUM actor you’ll just be watching a movie and go oh my god. it’s Dwight Frye again.
Next Halloween we definitely need The Phantom of the Opera musical showmen commentary
The screaming lady’s reaction is outrageous
The production value on this video is truly iconic! An outfit for each movie?!?! Y’all are just incredible! 😂😂😂 best CUM video I’ve ever seen 😂😂😂
13:10 if i remember correctly from film classes, that effect was called figueroa skies
The classic Universal monsters is one of my favourite film franchises. The fact that they are timeless makes them so iconic
I think the fun is that they aren’t timeless movies but the monsters are iconic and so famous that we’ll always go back to watching these old movies and enjoying them, which honestly is rare to have these black-and-white movies that anyone regardless of age will recognise, its always great keeping that alive. Alongside Casablanca or Citizen Kane.
@@GuineaPigEverydayit’s a shame that the willingness of certain people to watch older films is so limited. people are really unknowingly shutting themselves off from some of the greatest movies on earth
14:18 I aspire to this level of not caring about my performance
That title is top tier.
Back when I was like 5, my mom took me to the library to rent a movie. I chose Cinderella 1997, and when we got home, I found out it was actually Bride Of Frankenstein. Honestly, I didn't hate it.
Was the wrong dvd in the case of something?
@Shoulderpads-mcgee Yeah, I guess they didn't check.
Love to see a good C.U.M. Tribute! Keep it up fellas!
love to see you guys do older movies like this
Omg yes I've been movie marathoning these on TCM! Never thought I'd see silent films on PMI, but now I think every silent movie needs an eric and miles commentary 🙏🏼
eric laughing at his own jokes like he’s goddamn rodney dangerfield kills me every time
i’m so ready the the c.u.m-athon!
There definitely needs to be an episode of both The Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies!
Bela WhoGonSee is actually one of the funniest things I've ever heard
Fun Fact: Universal loved Julia Adams' (the woman from Creature from the Black Lagoon) legs so much they insured them for $500,000. I shit you not, this is 100% true.
We got some top tier Eric wheezes in this one.
Sorry guys can’t go trick or treating this year 😔 too busy watching C.U.M 😊
That quick Phantom of the Opera rap lives rent free in my head
Back then Hollywood still operated under the studio system, so they more or less owned the actors in their films. if you watch movies from the same studio in that era, odds are you'll see many of the same actors.
C.U.Ming HARD for Halloween
Thanks for uploading this right on Halloween while I'm sick with covid. Love y'all
feel better!!
Technically there is an Endgame style movie where they all show up. It’s “Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein”
Loved, loved, loved this video. Such a treat for this diehard C.U.M. fan
Agreed
Man there are so many of these movies left I hope they do them too, they didnt even get to the crossovers.
18:31 under the SAND! Come on guys.
they totally need to do a showman edition of the recorded phantom of the opera musical
Oh, to go back in time to pay tuppence at the local cinema to see Dracula on the big screen... movies sure have come far since then, but there's definitely a charm to these
You guys definitely need to watch Son of Frankenstein. It's the only one that has the actual Igor and arguably the best of the
No, Ghost of Frankenstein has Ygor too.
We need a sequal marathon of all the sequels and mashups!
Invisible Man is one of the best, bro literally has like the highest body count out of his fellow C.U.M. members. Also one of the most underrated Universal horror movies is Murders in The Rue Morgue
Looking forward to visiting C.U.M. land at Epic Universe in 2025
see ya there!
I'm accepting Dean Frankenstein as the monsters name now.
I like how the invisible man got his wish in death. Kind of makes the movie more cohesive for me compared to some of the others
I believe they did the same actors in multiple movies because actors would sign contracts with particular companies and only make movies with them so if they were made by the same people then ya they are gonna cast their most popular. But could be totally wrong.
cumathon gave me a headache from laughing too hard help 😭😭😭
eric this is like the 50th time i’ve come back to watch this vid… and my need for a cover of either the entire phantom of the opera or sweeney todd grows stronger… ur voice is one of an angel
i kinda wish some movie had the balls to reuse these really old film techniques in a modern thriller (let's be real these monsters arent really "horror" characters, they're better as thrillers to me) like the fabric sky and all the special effects from the invisible man, would make a very stylized movie if reused today, it'd be cool, prolly won't happen, but i can dream
It's not the exact same, but Nobuhiko Obayashi's films, especially the anti war trilogy and labyrinth of cinema do use antiquated and fake looking effects purposely
@@maskedsponge yeh the best example i can think of is beetle juice which has super obvious diorama sets for some of the wide shots
PLEASE you HAVE to do Phantom, I mean, the Phantom's name in the original book is LITERALLY ERIK COME ON
they also just rereleased the 25th anniversary for free on yt soooo...
This has quickly become one of my favorite PMI videos, I don’t even like most of these movies that much but you guys made them so entertaining
How can you not like them, they're all amazing!
Watching all these movies I know understand why An American werewolf in London ended abruptly. That movie was parodying the genre to a tee. Puts you on this huge emotional roller coaster in the finale and literally no rap up.
The Tale of the Dead Mans Float is my favourite AYAOTD episode! So terrifying when I saw that as a kid, was afraid of going into pools for a little bit just waiting for that f**ker to Classic Universal Monsters get me.
It would be pretty sweet if you did a AYAOTD commentary 😊
Omg I'm so happy it's you and Miles for this! The juxtaposition between old black and white movies and your commentary is so fucking funny! I really hope you continue to do old movies in the future. Also, would LOVE if you two did the musical Phantom with Gerard Butler.
was just thinking the other day how much I would love some eric and miles content and low and behold this is the best version of that and 40 minutes, god bless PMI
This quickly became one of my favorite commentaries ever
woooo glad you enjoyed!
Always a good night when PMI posts!!
Man the C.U.M universe isn't really that bad.
34:41 I definitely thought you were gonna say the Kim Possible episode where they go to cheer camp and the nerdy mascot becomes a creature of the…contaminated lake?? 😂
Ancient memories frfr!
Arguably the best horror films ever made, Lugosi, Karloff, and Chaney Jr were the original titans of terror.
Y’all should’ve included The 1927 Phantom of the opera, Lon Chaney Jr who plays wolfman is the phantom’s son.
Also little fact about Claude rains, he has also played the phantom of the opera in the 1947 remake, Which angered Lon Chaney Jr, cause that was his father’s role and was pissed that universal didn’t ask him.
EDIT: NEVER FUCKING MIND I LOVE YOU BOTH, EASILY MY FAVORITE OUTTA THE UNIVERSAL MONSTERS
hell yeah! changed up the order just a bit bc it felt right to start with Dracula vs Phantom
As a tall person, I just want to say Miles is so courageous for those capri length jeans. Capri jeans, ankle, and a cape is so profound. Look queen.
You guys ingested so much C.U.M in this video it’s simply amazing.
Did you guys ever see the monster rock band show at universal. Saw it when I was a kid , pretty great
yesss so fun!
I will not know true rest until the showman get together for a phantom track holy shit
"They don't call him Bela Lu-Can't-See."
That was the moment I smashed the subscribe button.
9:16 *me sitting like that cat meme with the flower on its head remembering we were going to get something close to this in modern times with The Dark Universe and people hated Dracula Untold so then we got The Mummy (which also assed) and now we never see it 😔
Javier Bardem and Angelina Jolie were almost Frankenstein's Monster and The Bride
Thank you so much for reviewing these films! I remember growing up with my grandfather watching The Wolfman every October!
For the question at 8:40, the real answer is pretty interesting.
If you go based on mainstream monsters, that’s Gillman from Creature From The Black Lagoon, but if you follow Universal’s horror catalogue all the way to the end of the classic horror era, it’s The Leech Woman.
HOWEVER, if you include copyright law and Universal properties, it would technically be King Kong, Mechanikong, and Godzilla, since those films were early to late 60’s and have Universal distribution
Shameless plug, I made an iceberg video on over 90 classic Universal horror movies, but that’s why I know this useless info!
I'm with James Rolfe on this one. The shark from Jaws is the final Classic Universal Monster.
