    Thanks so much for the review! I've read varying opinions on this one and wasn't sure if I should get it right away or not. I love Arkham and Eldritch Horror, as well as Elder Sign - and I have all the expansions to those. Now I'm really looking forward to this one!

    My wife and I played the expansion for the first time last night and completely agree with Zee. This is the only way I will play Elder Sign now. It actually makes it a hard game to win (which is a good thing) and gives a great feeling of despair (a good thing for a Cthulu game), a la Arkham Horror, in a play time that makes it likely to get to the table often. The best expansion I've bought in a while.

    The expansion looks good but I just can't bring myself to get an expansion that isn't compatible with most of the base game. It's almost like buying a brand new stand alone game that's really similar to a game I already own. I'd be much more interested in buying this if it was somehow compatible with all the old adventures and mythos cards, etc.
    But yeah, if I was looking to recommend a dice game for someone who like the Cthulu theme and isn't sure what to buy, Gates of Arkham looks like a winner. :)
    P.S. That card Booth in the Back reminded me an awesome TV show called The Booth at the End which starred Xander Berkeley (Percy on Nikita and Red John on The Mentalist) as a mysterious man with a magic journal who sits in a booth in a diner and people come to him asking for advice on how to solve problems. Cool stuff!

    Yeah, I am with you... gameplay and mechanics are really fun in Elder Signs, but there is literally not much space (espec. on the cards) for theme in the base game... Looking forward to a soonish release here in Germany! Thx again for all the effort & passion you guys invest in this great hobby!

    I agree with Zee on this one; the discovery of the cards is better than the original. I really like the anticipation of flipping the location card and discovering what you just walked into. It makes the game harder but a lot more fun. Thanks Zee!

    Thanks for the great review Zee! I really enjoy Elder Sign but have balked at these two expansions because they replace practically everything. I kinda' get now that that's basically the point. They are like three separate games although I'll still combine all the allies, monsters and stuff but I think I will actually pick them up. I've just not been really able to believe that there's a better game there if I ditch my big beautiful stack of adventures and replace it with one not even half it's size. Now I see why they really didn't have a choice if they wanted to make certain improvements. I'll give it a shot. Maybe this will allow it to keep it's edge over Formula D as my favorite light game.

    I got the base game a few days ago, so I should skip the first few expansion that still play the same and get this?

    Do I need unseen forces to use this expansion with the base game?
    What exactly do I miss out if I can?
    Haven't played my copy of Elder Sign for a while. The change of adding more theme is quite an appealing one.

    • @JustinTowle

      You don't need Unseen Forces. There are some cards that refer to Unseen Forces options (blessings/curses) but it provides an alternative if you aren't using it. I definitely recommend this.

    Do you ever play the game solitaire Zee? I found this one to be one of the few co-op games that I also really enjoy solo.

    Zee in your opinion what should be the first expansion to buy for this game?

    • @xshadowscreamx
      @xshadowscreamx 4 роки тому

      scorpsael I have not brought any yet but I think I will start with this and then the omen expansions, I guess I won't buy the first few expansions (grave consequences/unseen forces) since they still used adventure cards.

    just making the game slightly harder is a huge plus
    always enjoyed the original and first expansion but it was never that difficult
    also adding gates to other world cards adds alot to the theme

      +pencilpauli Start off by playing with 3 players instead of 4. When you start beating the game then try with 4 players. I don't recommend having more than 4. Choose characters AFTER you choose the Ancient One. Use Yibb-Tstll or one of the weaker ones from the base game first. Skills are valuable but only get them when you can afford to. Always keep an eye on the Clock especially if there are bad Midnight effects. Most importantly, work as a team. This game punishes those who cannot do so.

    Dumb question but is this expansion compatible with Unseen Forces? Thanks for the review Zee. I love Elder Sign and I am a sucker for expansions.

      Yeah it is, as a matter of fact some of the penalties/rewards are blessing and Curses

    Elder Sign: Another FF game that need one or more expansions to make it good.

    My gaming group is a huge fan of Mythos games but this whole game was a total failure. We played it once and couldn't believe it was that unfun so we gave it a second try and, yup, it was a big dull dud. We concluded either play Eldritch or original AH and lose this one.I agree with Zee, there is no theme here. I wonder if this expansion would change it enough to make it work for us.

    I agree that the tokens for the agents are tiny in the game, I use the agent pieces from Arkham Horror instead, nice and visible.
    Still prefer Iain James review of the expansion, but you were a close second. :)

    I have played Elder sign for about 40 times , and for me original is better , I like the system in expansion but it feels like another game , it removed a lot of good and fun things

  • @TheDiceman56
    @TheDiceman56 8 років тому +3

    Why oh why do they call this an expansion.........if you are taking all the big cards out from the first game and replacing them, then this is NOT an expansion, it's almost a stand alone game.

    • @jherrenor
      @jherrenor 8 років тому

      +Steve Briscoe Its an expansion cos you can't play it without the base game. Unseen Forces is great but not necessary with this. you still need all the Items, Monsters, Characters, Dice and Clock. the play style is the same but with way more theme and risk. Call it Elder Sign 2.0 if it puts you more at ease but if you like the original game, this one's highly recommended. (4 players is best, 4 makes it harder)

    I really want to love Elder sign but the dice are just so cheap looking/feeling. The colours are terrible for the theme which is a shame because the rest of the art/cards/tokens are spot on!
    God I want FF to make custom dice for this soo bad. There are 4 sets for Arkham/Eldritch why not the dice game?!?! WHY?
