  • In this video we'll take a closer look at the Lenovo ThinkCentre M900 SFF. During the video, I will completely disassemble the machine, then re-assemble it and while doing so perform a few upgrades like memory and replacing the HD with an SSD.
    Once all of that is done, I'll also be doing some benchmarks to check out the performance.

    Great video ,it is amazing how they design these machines for fast production and ease of repair with minimal tools. I have a question ,I have a Lenovo H520s vertical tower that I got at a recycle yard. I got it home and hooked it and and it booted to Windows 10 home ! It originally came with Win 8.1 it also has a core i7 3rd gen processor and 8 GB of DDR3 1600 MHz of ram. The computer runs well since I cloned a 500 GB SSD ,replacing the mechanical drive that it came with. Can I upgrade the memory to 16 GHz since the machine is running Windows 10?

    Would it be possible to fit a different mATX motherboard in this? I have the same computer, and i love the design of the case etc.
    I use it on my tv in my livingroom. I guess the power cables can be a problem but might be able to buy adapters for it.
    How would it be to mount a different cooler when the mounting screws goes into the chassi in the back?

      I don’t believe so, was looking into it myself and it’s a custom form factor board as well as some of the psu plugs are made to specifically only allow that motherboard, they would never do this to stop consumers from upgrading though 😁👍

      If you need place for more than one 3,5" drive you could go for an SFF with a full 5,25" DVD-drive. There are brackets to hold a 3,5" and 2x 2,5" drives that fit in that place. I used it here to build my NAS: ua-cam.com/video/NXWQ4FI5Pu4/v-deo.html

    Great quality video, thank you! In your experience, do you find Lenovos to be more picky than other brands when it comes to RAM they work with? I use an old M58P tower that came with 2 x 1GB of RAM. I ordered it years ago from a refurbisher company with a RAM upgrade but the stick they installed was not accepted by the system. At the time I didn't bother returning it, because Linux Mint was perfectly happy to run basic tasks with 2GB as well. Recently I found a good deal on used DDR3 so I bought 2x 2GB sticks, no luck again, it beeps and doesn't post regardless if the new RAM is added alongside the old or on its own.

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  7 місяців тому

      To my experience Lenovo's are not more or less picky for memory. Are you sure the memory is compatible? There is often memory available at prices that look like a good deal but in a lot of cases this is memory that comes for decommissioned servers and is ECC or Registered, which is not compatible here.

    • @TamasH87
      @TamasH87 7 місяців тому

      Thank you for the answer. It probably comes down to a frequency incompatibility. The board takes 1066MHZ RAM and they sent me the 1333 type (although I specified what I needed but they didn't care or didn't have it on stock. Typical Romania, haha..). There was a chance that the board could run the faster sticks at its lower required speed, so I tried them anyway, but no luck. If they make me pay for postage to return them, it's not worth it. Anyway, soon the time will come to move on from the old trusty Core2Duo to something more recent :) I just don't like throwing things away while they still work well.
      Thanks again! Keep up the good work! And happy new year!

    I'm kind of looking for something low-power around a 60-watt processor. I think this will work but with no extra storage, no DVD, and no cooling fan I want to bolt a passive heatsink even if it won't fit in the case I can leave the top off it's going in a portable solar-powered laser burner. I even stripped down a laptop LCD display no camera just a driver circuit with video connections. All the extra power I save in watts goes toward refrigeration and a CO2 laser. Cooling is done by a thermal draft in a painted black metal pipe and wind.The ThinkCentre M900 case looks easy to work on after removing all the stuff I don't need out of the way. I will have to take it apart and clean out the smoke and dust from being an outdoor machine every few weeks. I think fanless power supplies will fit this. 16GB of ram will work well on graphic applications. Some low-power workstation cards are pretty powerful nowadays. I got a Quadro K220 it just gets warm to the touch and renders video all day and has enough power with GDDR5 ram to play some games but it's not low profile.
