Tom Daley & Jake Daniels talk being openly gay in football

- Last year Tom Daley recorded a message that was broadcast on Christmas Day on Channel 4. It highlighted some themes that would dominate the year - talking about homophobia in sport and questioning why there were no out gay professional footballers in England. At the end of the message, he said that his wish for 2022 was for one, impossibly brave footballer to step forward and say “I am gay”. Fast forward a year and Tom got his wish….
This short film hears from Jake Daniels - the only out gay player playing professionally in England. We hear about his decision to reveal his sexuality - the pressures he faced and how watching Tom’s message helped him to take the brave step. We see Tom and Jake meeting up - two of the only out gay sportsmen in the country having a discussion about homophobia in sports - as well as their past, their present and the future for gay players.

We can be strong. We can be masculine. We can be athletic. We can be loving, courageous, and empowered - and be gay - all at the same time. Just be you. Congratulations Jake.
we know gay men can be masculine, cause we hear gay men use that term all the time as some kind of badge of honour, as if it makes them better than feminine gay men
@@deflorare25 I usually hear about feminine gay men having that opinion, viewing masculine men as better.
@@deflorare25 true, but the whole community reinforces this idea tbf, including femme gays
@@deflorare25 It's because masculine men are more attractive to most gay guys. The reality is that, gay or straight, attractive people will always be put on a pedestal.
@@deflorare25 unpopular opinion but I do think that over-the-top flamboyant gay guys who are very feminine, even more so than women themselves, contribute to the stigma. I'm not accusing them all but some of them are "in your face" all the time sometimes playing a persona "bitch this, bitch that". Being gay and feminine doesn't mean you should forget about "etiquette" depending on where you are. No need to force their "lifestyle" down people's throats all the time. Because of such behaviour, there's still lots of people who think that being gay equates being feminine and the caricature of a woman. I'm all for pointing fingers to people who are homophobic but we should not deny that some of the LGBT community keeps the stigma alive. I'm gay myself by the way before I get accused of this and that and to me, being gay just means I'm attracted to males, not that I can get away with talking louder than others nor that it should define everything else in my life. I do feel that some of us take it way too far and do more harm than not in the process of LGBT people being accepted.
Regardless, well done to that young lad, very brave of him at that age and within his sport!
He’s only 17?
Oh my days. What a brave man. Nothing but huge respect.
I thought I was brave at 20 to come out 22 years ago….but nothing compared to this guy.
This man is such an inspiration to all LGBTQ people.
Yeah! To think he's also in the public's eyes. He's truly brave.
Hii
@@Mynameisntjeff147 he's a man he's where he sould be but you should be in the asshole's sections
No he's not
@@Mynameisntjeff147 smh there's always one of you people 😒 🤦
Simply a beautiful, proud moment in History. Jake, you are a strong man - an example to many other gay athletes who are grappling with their sexuality. I wish for you a prosperous future, both on the field and in your private life. Your boyfriend will be an extremely lucky dude.
“You’re not here to please other people”… you’re here for being your true self ❤️
Well said, mate!
Jake wrote history. The moment he came out it was a big deal on the news here in the Netherlands too! Since I am gay myself I could not be more proud of him!
What an incredibly poised mature lad who is still not yet 18. Truly inspirational !
yeeeiiigh can you believe there is a 20 years gap from each other ... wow , i know Tom since 2004 lovely dude ,
@@PEPSIMAX2013 10yrs tom is 28
He's 17? He does not look that young. Looks closer to late 20s.
@@robbyten100 He’s 18 in two days time (DOB 8-1-2005). I agree he looks older (def not late 20s though) but facial hair often does that.
@@rosepetal34 hi💟👍
Here's hoping he's set a precedent; if a 17 year old can have the courage and bravery to come out so he can live his life on his own terms, then why can't other professional players? I'm certain he's inspired others to see that they can still play and be themselves. Congrats Jake!
There’s probably 2000 pro footballers in England if 1% of men are gay that’s 20, however gays are on average going to be more feminine and hence more likely to not like playing football, if I had to put money on it my guess would be 3 players.
Maybe they want to be known for their ability, not as a poster boy to be questioned by the media.
@@Purewalite yeah this typically is the main reason and I don’t blame them tbh
@@BlueIvory4 Well, there's nothing worse for a gay guy to be having to pretend he's straight.
@@khevsuri3527 You had to, not that many years ago, if you were, say in the services or the police force.
It really does mean a lot. When I watch things like this and my eyes tear up, I realize just how much unresolved trauma I have from living so long in a constant state of fear. It means a lot.
I'm proud of Tom, Jake and anyone reading this comment who is going through what they experienced, or anything supporting somebody in their situation.
My mental health was very poor too, as I struggled to reconcile my Roman Catholic faith with being gay. My struggle made me severely depressed and even suicidal.
Thankfully I am in a much better place these days. I have a lot of support and people I can relate to and identify with.
That is such a sweet gesture of what the Norwich team did to acknowledge Jake's bravery. I'm sure there'll be a 10 mile long queue of guys lining up for Jake, if he's single.
Wishing Tom, Jake and anyone reading this who can relate, the very best.
What a fantastic 8 minutes. Such a strong story and message from two very brave inspirational guys. I really hope whoever sees this can find the courage and strength to come out and feel that huge relief. It’s a huge step and amazing new chapter in life 🎉
It's brick by brick, guys (and girls and trans and queer people). I bawled my eyes out watching this and I'm not even close to football. Yet I do know the sport's prejudice. This courage moves mountains, even if we don't see it straight away. So, thank YOU, Jake and Tom, for taking this step: for you and for each of us, everywhere in the world. From the bottom of my heart - thank you.
Well spoken and Brilliant video interview for 2023. A great big thank you and hug to each of you Tom Daley and Jake Daniels. Living for 50 years it is great to see the changes and support for out celebrities, athletes, and everyday gays. Best wishes and love to all.
'Well Done' to Tom Daley and Jake Daniels for being so honest and open about themselves and their sexuality and you guys are a true inspiration to so many people trying to come to terms with their sexuality in today's world and with being an openly gay man myself I want to wish both you guys the very best of luck, happiness and success with both your lives in the future now to say the least!
Ah, Jake you are a brave man, and know the love and support for you is coming in from around the world!
As much as I applaud this video and this inspirational young man, it is desperately sad that we still live in a society where the video had to be made at all.
Nonetheless, credit where it's due. Huge admiration for him ❤️
Exactly it shouldn't matter whatsoever.
Well, it should still be made because people even to this day I still homophobic assholes. Actually people are more homophobic now more than ever but no one is seeing it. Homophobic attacks are still happening even in 2023 sadly.
Brave young lad!! Your courage and honesty are so inspirational!! It's great to see Tom as a mentor for young athletes who are going through this process. Some will follow, no doubt about it.
Gotta say it's wonderful to see this generation allowed to express themselves and live their life, as they choose... as a 58 year old guy that was disowned by my family at 18, (when I told them I was gay and I wanted to live with my 'friend' while going to university) when they told me they could not support that kind of lifestyle. They then cut me off financially and refused to pay for university, and because they made too much money, I was not eligible for a student loan. I was penniless and had to learn to fend for myself quickly... I got a job selling shoes, then managing a shoe store, then I became a window display designer and I have been a fashion designer for the past 30 years, (I have not spoken to my family in 40 years.) Something that I think is worth mentioning about the time that I grew up, compared with today, is back then there was the strict religious need to conform and believe homosexuality was evil... today nobody goes to church anymore, (except for a wedding or a funeral,) so the pressure to conform is not the same. Then there is the new free social media aspect, that did not exist back then, that has educated and exposed so many people to homosexuality... without the relentless evil scare mongering, and it has erased the ridiculous stereotype that all gay men run around in dresses, when you are not looking. Cheers to those brave, honest guys that choose to be real and live their bliss, while inspiring others that are struggling to find their way.
Yes, It's me, it is wonderful that as a society we have started down the acceptance road. So much further to go, but I am grateful that at least we have begun. I am very sorry for the negative experience you have endured, but I also know that out of hard times comes the call to greatness. Thank you and lots of hugs..........Ray
Well done for being so strong and sticking to being yourself rather than running back to your family. Those early times sound tough but it has made you into the strong person you are today. Religion can be a horrible thing.
Wow, that's so difficult. Couldn't help feeling angry at what your parents put you through. I think you could have applied to be regarded as financially independent though at the time. Feel so sad that they haven't reached out to you in all that time
@@herseem Just your typical WASP family, where appearances are EVERYTHING, and student loans back then were impossible to get (your parents income was the deciding factor... unlike today, when anyone and their dog can get a student loan by just walking through the door.)
@@PastaSauce. Fortunately, I was born with a strong character and belief in myself, (it also helped that I was considered attractive and had an exceptional artistic talent, that I could exploit to earn a living, without which I would have had nothing and no doubt 'suicide' would have been my only option... don't get me wrong, the betrayal was traumatic and I considered suicide many times, but I wasn't going to give my family the satisfaction of destroying me... so here I am folks. Haaaah!)
Best wishes for the future Jake. You are an inspiration to other footballers.
Well done to Jake for being so brave. This is a huge step in the right direction and what’s even more impressive is that he’s focused on his football and not let the celebrity affect him.
On another note, bless Tom Daley, he is a great role model and national treasure.
Keep up the good work lads.
Best wishes Jake
Not only an inspiration to those in football but for all people struggling at the moment 👌👌
Jake. You are absolutely incredible! What an inspiration! History maker! And a Lancashire lad! From an old gay Lancashire bloke, Thank You from the bottom of my heart! You have broken the barrier. More to follow! Cheers Tom too! All the best in 2023.
For me it was a real shock, hearing about his coming out. I remember anytime that a celebrity has come out, but this time was really different. It may be because he’s a quite famous footballer that made it different, but also what’s different is that he’s my age, that really changed things, and helped me in my process of accepting myself.
I can’t imagine how much your life has changed since, but I sincerely thank you for standing out, and helping me assume myself.
Marcus🐸
His teammates applauded when he told them! That is fucking awesome! And the open and very visible support from the organization, other teams and players, and equally important are those who say it is a non issue. Amazing! Bravo, Jake!
That was beautiful. Plain and simple. Thank you both.
This is so great for our sport and for kids who love sports but are so scared due to the stigma associated with being gay. Things are changing in the positive direction though and it is really good to see. Now I wish and hope this will transcend to other sports like tennis. Growing up loving tennis (& other sports) and being gay was so difficult for me as I did not have anyone to look up to or be inspired by. So I am praying we get to also one day see gay/bi male tennis players out and proud in the sport they love without needing to hide who they are.
He's so young! And with a whole life ahead of him. All the best, Jake! Hope you reach high heights!
so inspirational jake deserves evert happiness. wish the programme was longer
Way to go Man. You will have such an incredible effect on others. I came out more than 30 years ago in the height of the AIDS crisis. Luckily I didnt have to deal with being in a macho sports culture, but my older brother was a professional athlete and he took a long time to be comfortable with me.
I’m so glad that it went well and that many people were so supportive. I literally clapped my hands together when he talked about coming out to his team because that was very similar to my experience with my high school tennis team. I was a bit nervous because of some casual homophobic banter that got tossed around but when I told them they were very supportive and they all clapped for me. I’m really thankful for that and I’m really thankful that there are other people like that around the world.
YES! So PROUD of Jake! 🌈❤️ Good job guys. Still half in the closet at 58, I am in tears! Thanks 🙏

A huge virtual hug to you all ❤️
He exudes courage and kindness - a real man and a real inspiration.
As a gay man I'm at a point where I just want to get to a day when a person's sexually is just something nobody has to discuss at all. We will NEVER have equality until things that a person has no control over, like gender, sexuality and race, are things that nobody gives a toss about. Sadly society is still most obsessed with anything that can differentiate one person from another instead of focusing on what bonds us as a species.
Exactly our sexuality is only a small part of our makeup, it shouldn't matter, there is more to someone than who they choose to love.
@@jonclingan193 it's just a shame that it's still a small minority of the human race who think this right now.
One day. One day we'll be there and have lgbtq+ that were brave enough like Tom and Jake to thank. One day, stigma will be a thing of the past. Life the sufragettes and race warriors.
There’s always going to be people who’ll ask who is and who isn’t, not necessarily maliciously but just like asking what music or food they like out of interest to get to know someone better. At the moment it’s more of a gossipy tabloid thing to speculate but at the same time pretending they don’t care who is
Sending Jake much love and respect - wishing you all the very best for the future 🙂
Proud of him and i'm glad we get to see moments like these. Still we need to get to a future where someone's sexuality is irrelevant to others
Jake you are an insanely brave man. Your coming out story has changed football for the better, helping people feel less alone and ashamed in their sexuality.
Takes strenght to come out in the world of sports. Wish you both very happy lives.
What a brave guy, so young and in such a tough environment....but, as he said, with lots and lots of people, colleagues, who are supporting him. And getting the support of Tom Daley...WOW. I hope, with so much support, in the future, being gay will not be a SUBJECT at all....because this is private and has nothing to do with the business or the sport someone is in. Congrats to Jake Daniels for such a step into the real world. I hope, you will get all the support you deserve....and that's a lot.....thumbs up!
Very impressive young man, brave, decent, intelligent. You coming out will be an inspiration to other young people and hopefully other footballers will follow your example and come out of the closet and remove that taboo forever❤

Legend tbh. 17! To take that role and lead. Amazing. Hope he has an amazing career.
I admire you so much Jack! You're making a huge change for all of us and paving a road for young people to shine with their true colors! Thank you and I wish you all the best things in life!!! 🤗❤️
Thank you for making this opportunity for both of them to show their courage and honesty for everyone to understand ❤❤❤
To be free to be yourself
That's it
In years to come he can be so proud of himself, paving the way for other players to come out and not feel alone
What a beautiful smile he has. I love how his face brightens up when Daley enters the room.
From Australia, congrats and thank you. Your decision to be free will save lives. Straight up simple as that. And as important as that. Being free is that powerfull.
So happy for him. What a wonderful man!
BRILLIANT Nobody should ever be afraid of what they are because it's not who you are. Being Gay does NOT define you as a person. Tom has been amazing over the years and I adore the hell out of him and his courage. Congratulations Jake
Inspiration. Congratulations. I hope your community grows with you 💖
ABOUT DAMN TIME!!! congrats bb, this was the main thing that deterred me from pursuing organized sport growing up
Thank you Jake, you brave young man, you pave the way for many more young LGBTQ people in sport. We owe you a debt of gratitude ❤🏳️🌈
Brilliant! What courageous men. Both Tom and Jake.
Jake is so brave for this
Love Tom’s comment about how guys who are fans are out singing their songs with their arms around each other, it is unfortunate that for guys being friends and showing platonic affection is automatically shifted into being seem as gay or the sign of an implied sexual attraction. I think that if we could overcome that bias that it would remove a lots of stigma and guys would not feel so isolated. That you Jake for your bravery and for opening the door a little wider, perhaps down the road a guy is going to come forward and say you inspired him to stay in football despite being gay when he was thinking he was the only one.
Great strength of character on show here. Well done ! I did not have that strength at that age. Different times. I got married, had three lovely children (who have been amazing) and came out at 42. Now happily married to a man. Best thing I ever did. What a journey !
You are the definition of a real man. You’re being your authentic self. You are a talented sportsman and a gorgeous, sexy man
Most amazing gift anyone can gift... inspirational
So glad Jake can be himself & enjoy life, great to hear his mental health improved too since coming out. Wishing Jake peace and happiness for his future ❤️
You can really see who's more self confident. He was only 17 in this video, so it's clear he is brave and wants to be himself. :)
Jake, well done, mate. At the end of the day it is about living life to the full according to your own lights and that is what you are doing. As an ageing poof, I salute both you and Tom. You are both more man than many I know
Good on this lad. If only there were more players brave enough to go on this journey with him
Maybe now there will be.
It's not that easy to come out. It took my gay friend so long before he had the courage to come out to me so it's not that easy and besides there are families who are also homophobic which could make things difficult for some people with the process of their coming out. It's really tough for some people to finally admit to themselves that they're gay.
Also gay people dont have to "come out" just like straight people dont have to. It's okay to keep your private life private if you don't want the world having opinions on your every move
Thank you for this great video. My only regret is that your statement in May 2022 wasn't more widely reported! I sincerely hope more gay sportsmen will follow your lead now.
Good job! I remember when the first NCAA College Baseball catcher came out in February, 2014. It made the press all up and down east coast USA!

Hi from Canada ! You have to be proud (pride) of you ! Good exemple for 17 years old . (excuse my bad english). Inspirational.
Nice one Jake! I’m also into football as an analyst. Apart from that I work in Schools as a Supply teacher and when there’s a gay banter in the classroom I remind the learners about their British values (many students learn about inclusion through BVs)…which shuts the banter up and we all settle down to the Spanish lesson.
Courage = freedom; freedom to be yourself = living in victory. Try that for your team. They need to multiply your wages. This is the goal of your life - the absolute winner. The world is yours Jake.
You think he should get paid more than others because he's gay (or has said he is gay)? Think about that for a min lol
@@adamlee3333 It was a joke....point was being free in mind - at last - can make him free to play better - remove those atomic elements of doubt etc...spirit matters. I'd pay for freedom; wages not an issue...and I paid for years. Not talking of Ronaldo here - bless im!

A wonderful interview, and a very brave individual in a sport that is somewhat hiding under a blanket when it comes to dealing with homosexuality.
