I like the idea of a challenge and sharing sone of the results, it brings the photographic community closer together and having photographs of water from all around the world will be interesting to see. Your early Autumnal colours looks like the trees and plants are under a bit of stress maybe the lack of rain. It happens when we have drought here in Australia.
In the Netherlands trees and ferns are also turning yellow. If I understand correct it is because of the lack of water which makes them go into autumn mode as a survival mechanism.
It’s the same down in the south Kim, some trees are turning already and a lot of the ferns and bracken have gone yellow , got a feeling it’s going to be a short window of colours this year!
It’s an interesting challenge you’ve set ! I love the colour image of the boat house wooden cladding with the vivid green going through the centre - simple but very effective
I'm looking forward to this challenge Kim, in fact all of the challenges. It's just what I needed. Things were becoming a bit stale and boring with regard to my photography. Just going out and photographing the same old same old!
Hi Kim, we’ve had some trees turn early here too. It’s drought stress. Some trees are shedding early because they are going into survival mode because they’re not getting enough water. There are a few trees here in New York that began turning a week before the summer solstice, having only been in leaf for about six weeks. They’re now completely bare. I saw the same thing in Switzerland a month ago. We also have a few confused magnolias, beginning to blossom while being in full leaf. When the blossoms started opening in April, we had a 24-hour freeze and temperatures dropped for one night to minus 10C before returning to normal later the following day. All the blossoms froze and fell, some never even opened. Now the trees are trying to make up for it.
Good idea to give us some challenges. The theme elements was something I had on my mind some time back, it's still in paper form. But now it's time to fulfil the task. We have autumn colours too.
I was up in Inverness while you filmed this, and on the radio on my drive home, they had an article about the 'False Autumn' we are experiencing. This is the trees going into survival mode apparently, due to the lower rainfall. They also mentioned that sometimes this can lead to a second spring with some flowers being fooled in Sept/Oct...might be interesting to watch.
Unrelated to your challenge, but related to what you said about ferns changing colors there already - here in California too I noticed as early as last week of July some trees changing color, and now in August it seems we are halfway there already! It is bizarre. I think with warming climates, winters have shrunk, expanding spring and fall seasons. That's what I think at least anyway. Looking forward to seeing the various submissions for the challenge!
Interesting to read it's happening with you too. A few people have suggested it's due to the lack of rain. Trees naturally shut down early with lack of rain as a defence mechanism
The photos of the raindrops on the window - Were the photos upside down? I expected the rounded parts of the drops to be toward the bottom. Regarding not carrying a tripod: In my camera bag there are several 1/4 - 20 bolts, the size that fits the camera mount. If I need something to mount the camera, I can poke a hole through cardboard or thin wood and improvise a base. Thanks for your videos.
Soy where I live has hundreds of small valleys with water flowing through them (well usually there is water, now there is just drought and death...) so that is a nice challenge! But even cooler is the fact that next week I am on a week long camping holiday in a forest right at the coast of the Baltic Sea! Like you step out of your tent, walk two steps and are on the beach type of coastal forest camping. So there should be plenty of opportunity to get creative with that challenge! Thanks for adding that extra bit of spice to my holiday!
Challenge accepted! I love photographing near water and I will particularly enjoy the creative aspect of this challenge as it will give me a proper focus and a reason to experiment. Great idea, thanks Kim.
Hi, Kim. I will send you a couple from my local lakes to your email, as I am not a fan of Instagram. I noticed straight away on your video the reflections of the weatherboards from the boatshed on the loch. So glad you did too!
Thanks again Kim for sharing your experience with great results..... love your challenge...I have just purchased a Polarising filter so I am anxious to try it out.... your locations are always interesting for me & yes the colours of autumn can certainly depend on the amount of water or lack of water in the preceding season.... cheers from Australia 😀❤️
The thunder storm may not have happened for you, however the thunder sure kicked off where I was on holiday just outside Sheffield in my tent. I was going to photograph the lightning but decided to sit in my tent and make tea. I have never heard rain so loud hitting my tent on the 16th, ever. The local town got flooded with cars floating down the road and a supermarket roof collapsed with the weight of the downpour. Around where I live, I have also noticed random trees shedding leaves way before Autumn. However I put it down to the excessive heat and lack of rain where the trees have gone into survival mode to conserve moisture and shed their leaves. Aggg. I don't have Instagram 😭😭😭 I do have Flickr though.
Has it been dry in Scotland this year? Trees and other plants are turning here in Iowa because of lack of moisture. It’s supposed to rain here this weekend so hopefully I can find a creative composition
No rain here but I should be able to do something interesting with the desiccated pond. And they've unlocked Insta these days so we can post from a browser so who knows. I have a hideous plastic tripod in my car 24/7 just in case I forget the 'good' one.
In respect for this summer in our area: Please can I take a dust challenge to replace the water challenge? Since a quarter of a year we got barely any water here (somewhere in Germany).
I am going to try and do these challenges. I don't post on IG, but may have to. LOL. I'm new to all of that. Showing my age? I think so. LOL. I really liked the colour image of the boat house.
I have a challenge for you. The next time the weather is so bad you can’t get out, try preparing a Special Scottish Dish then photograph it. We just want to see if you can cook.
my Nisi polariser fell off and into a deep part of the water at Wailing Wisow fall a couple of years ago. It was only a few months old.. I literally howled 'Nooooooooooo!!!!!' as it tumbled in horrifying slow motion into the depths. Oh the fun of Landscape photography. :'(
so, a whole month of just water? I suppose, though, that it's ok if we shoot the other four in the mean time? TIA Edit: Are they supposed to be "landscapy" photos? or pretty much anything? outdoors? sry for the questions. ;-)
Yes (gives people time to take the photos and try different techniques) 😊 Feel free to shoot the other subjects too. I'll announce the next category mid September. Anything you like, so long as it relates to water 😄

What a great challenge a purpose to go out and photograph .Great idea.

Hi Kim. I couldnt believe how clear the water was with your polarizer. Great shots.
Thank you Rich! I couldn't believe it myself 😲 It was amazing!
Hi Kim,
Another interesting video.
You captured some really nice image's and i couldn't believe how clear the water was with your poloriser on.
Thank you Tim

Great Idea Kim, to create a photography challenge. Getting out the next days and see what comes out of this challenge.
Brilliant! Enjoy Jean 😊

Which polariser was you using? Was absolutely amazing!
It's the NiSi landscape polariser
Great idea! Thanks Kim, this will be fun 😁🇦🇺
Enjoy Sue!

I took half the images upside down. Can't remember if both of them were shot that way or not. Great for you to notice this!

Another wonderful video , I use Hitect Format filters :)
When is the deadline for sharing images?
Let's go with the 12th September. I'll mention this in the next video ☺️
Sounds good, I'll give it a try, and send photos.
Brilliant! Excited to see them 😊

It certainly has! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I hadn't realised until last night that lack of rain can cause them to turn early

You'll enjoy the Earth theme when it goes live 😉
Water can include any water.. droplet photography from a tap would count!

😂 you'll be disappointed James!
Ok so i have my photo just have to figure out how to send it.
Interesting challenge ! I want to connect with Photographers around the World
Nice idea Kim, challenge accepted!
