    So, I’ve been using Photoshop Elements for about a year now and have kind of learned-by-doing. It takes forever to figure what some of the tools do because there are so many, and when I do figure something out, a new option appears to completely mess me up. I tried learning through Lynda.com, but some things are not fully explained there...but it’s a good place to start. Now, since discovering George Peirson’s “How To Gurus” channel on UA-cam, and his PSE course, I am truly jazzed about using this software.
    In his course, George teaches you how to use ALL the PSE tools, and combined with his free UA-cam videos, I am truly amazed at what I’m able to do. Each morning I watch about an hour of his UA-cam instruction, then in the afternoon I complete a module of the course. Right now I do family birthday videos with Premiere Elements and include pics I’ve enhanced with Photoshop Elements. Now, instead of just fine-tuning photos, I can put my grandsons in photos with different backgrounds, different colored clothes, and with famous people, just to name a few. In fact, right now I’ve finished putting my 3-year-old grandson playing with Ruth Badger Ginsberg and The Rolling Stones. (Won’t his parents be proud?)
    Anyway, I can’t say enough good things about George Peirson’s course and “How To Gurus” on UA-cam. George truly is the expert and an excellent teacher.

    I am always learning new approaches and techniques from you as well as reviewing and tweaking techniques from previous tutorials. I finally see a new use for the sharpening tool. Thanks

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  7 років тому

      You're welcome. I tend to use the sharpening tool to add in texture more than use it for actually sharpening. It is also good on increasing the film grain look if you have been retouching an area and lost some of that. Works especially well with black and white.

    Hi George, thanks for another great video. I remember your video on frequency separation and wonder if that could be used successfully on the second photo? I mainly take landscape/sunset photos and sometimes lighten the shadows in a selection. I typically use the Quick Selection Tool then the Refine Selection Brush Tool, which works well when there is good contrast. Occasionally I will copy the Background, lighten the shadows on the whole copy and use this to get a better selection, then delete that layer. It is great to see your videos and learn new and different techniques.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  7 років тому +1

      Hi Phil, you can use Frequency Separation on the second photo for final clean up but it will not be effective to remove the large shadow. Frequency Separation is really a last step technique to take a good photo retouch to great. The problem with Frequency Separation is that you are either fixing texture or you are fixing color, neither one of which will fix this shadow problem. But after you have removed the shadow you can certainly use it to improve the final look. For instance in this video I used the quick trick of using the Sharpen Tool to add back in some texture into the repaired skin area, you could do the same thing with Frequency Separation copying skin texture from one area into the new area lacking texture.

  • @peterhead9981

    Thanks, George. I have also found that the healing brushes are often not as clever as the clone stamp in making such changes. As you say, one needs to try both to see which will work better on a given image. Interesting that you used the Levels under Layer Adjustments rather than under the Enhancement menu. I guess it does make more sense doing that, given that you are able then to edit the layer.
    I simply cannot get to grips with the polygonal lasso tool for some reason, and right now the quick selection tool is playing up. Almost as if it goes to sleep, then takes for ever to catch up, with the cursor turning into a wheel that goes round and round and round whiles the software is making its mind up about what to do!! Very frustrating to put it very mildly!

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  7 років тому

      Hi Peter, whenever possible I try to do Enhancements as Adjustment Layers since I can then keep it or throw it away, and by clicking on the Layer Icon I can go back in and edit the settings. With adjustments in the Enhance menu once you put that on your image you are stuck.
      On the Polygonal Lasso Tool, you are setting control points and Photoshop Elements is filling in straight lines between the points. If you need to go around a curve then just put your points closer together. Always go clear around your selection and back to the beginning to close out the selection because PSE will put a straight line between your last and first points so put those either on top of each other or real close. If you can't find the starting point just double click to close the selection.
      With the Quick Selection tool sounds like you are running out of memory. Can easily happen with large images at high resolutions or where there is a lot of detail to the selection. Also if you have been working for a while on a large image you may have filled up your memory cache and that will also slow things down. Try clicking on Edit/Clear/Clear All, this should free up memory but it will also get rid of your Undo/Redo steps up to that point so make sure you don't need to do any Undoing before clearing out the History.

    Hi George - Excellent tutorial, as always. But I didn't hear you mention why in both cases, you copied the layer mask up onto the adjustment layer, and did nothing more with the layer mask copy. Can you explain? Thanks

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  4 роки тому

      Hi Robert, the layer mask on the adjustment layer is used to limit the adjustment to just that part of the layer below. Just makes for an easier and cleaner adjustment.

    I must be missing something. Around 14:30 in your video, you mention you could not adjust the brightness again, because it wasn't an adjustment layer. Could you have added it as an adjustment layer, in the layers panel, in the beginning, instead of going through Enhancements drop down?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  6 років тому

      Hi Nancy, at that point I am talking about Shadows/Highlights which is not available as an adjustment layer. Brightness/Contrast and Levels are both available as adjustment layers but Shadows/Highlights is not and in this particular photo the Shadows/Highlights gave the best results. If I was doing this over in Adobe Photoshop I would put the Shadows/Highlights on an adjustment layer because that option is available in Adobe Photoshop but not in Photoshop Elements. One of the many limitations that have to be worked around when using the less powerful Photoshop Elements program.

I have looked and looked for answer to this but all I can find is how to save just one layer not all of the work can you help?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  6 років тому +1

      Hi John, just make sure you are saving to the native PSD file format and it will save everything for future editing. The PSD file format is the default format for both Photoshop Elements and Adobe Photoshop. If you are working on a project with layers and click Save it will automatically save to the PSD file format unless you choose something else.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  6 років тому

      Hi Jamie, you can use either the Clone Stamp or Healing brushes, or the Content Aware Fill. But it depends on what the text is on top of. If it is over something important like a face you are probably out of luck as the tools only allow you to copy from one place in the picture to another.
