Sharpen Photos Photoshop Elements. I show you several ways to Sharpen an Image in Adobe Photoshop Elements including Filters and Sharpen Tool. In this Photoshop Elements project tutorial I show you how to sharpen a blurry photo image 3 different ways depending on the sharpening technique required including use of the Sharpen Tool, Filters, and the Shake Reduction tool.

Thanks, George. I've never used High Pass, but seeing how you used it makes me wonder about all those old photos I have where something is not quite in focus. I have tried the Shake Reduction, but have found it a little hit and miss - maybe the image was a little too out of focus for that tool to work effectively. Good advice on the Sharpen tool also. All I got to do now is remember it all!!!
You're welcome Peter. The High Pass filter is also frequently used to separate out the texture for frequency separation retouching but I prefer the method I showed in a previous video more. It is a cool trick for sharpening photos that have good texture, its not so good for photos with limited texture. You are right about Shake Reduction, when it works it is great, otherwise not so much.

Thanks! PSE 2018 only added in some new features, mostly in the Organizer so it is really more of a version 15+ as opposed to a new version.

George, how do I use the image - mode- 8bits/channel. I have a sharpening program that needs to have the photo in 8 bits. Can you help?
Hi Stephen, Photoshop Elements is an 8bits/channel program. If you opened the image in Photoshop Elements it is already 8 bits. Jpeg images are 8 bits, images on the web are 8 bits, if you are working with a Raw image then simply open it in PSE and save to jpeg and you will be fine.

I am very glad you did this video. The sharpening thing with PSE has been a mystery to me and I have had nothing but frustration using the automated tool (The ones you didn't use...LOL!!) Every place I have looked for answers to this dilemma causes one to way over sharpen. I like this high pass idea and will go with that when needed. I also find two other things that seem to work for me. first is to make a selection of the item I need more focus on and work on the contrast from that point, it looks better compared to the rest of the photo. The second thing is to use the sharpening tool in the drop down menu but not at the default levels, I tend to turn them way down and just take what it gives me and walk away, no more crunchy photos yet some improvement.

You're welcome Rich. I also usually make a selection around what I want to sharpen but I didn't want to overly complicate this video. When making a selection for sharpening stay just a little bit away from the edge of your subject and use a soft edge mask, that way you can have the sharpening on the edge as well.

Good advice, thank you. I really started to get the concept of sharpening when you did the video on getting rid of shadows (or reducing them). You had a lady on a tropical background and this got me looking at things differently. Thanks again George.
George, can you do a video on the "other" choice in the Filter Selection in PSE 2022? It contains some of the things mentioned in this video.This contains : Custom, High pass, Maximum, Minimum and Offset.

I didn't know about the high pass filter as a way to increase apparent sharpness. You say it works better than the Adjust Sharpness tool (which was the only way I knew). Can you tell me if there is any time that I should actually use the Adjust Sharpness tool?
Hi Jay, Elements offers lots of ways of adjusting sharpness, my usual advice is to use the tool that you are most comfortable with. In most cases the Adjust Sharpness tool is all you need. If what you are working on is critical then I would try the High Pass filter but in most cases that is overkill.

where is the enhance tool in version 17 ?
Hi, I am guessing that you are referring to Adobe Photoshop 2017 since the most recent version of Photoshop Elements is 15. In Adobe Photoshop 2017 you will find the Shake Reduction in the Filter Menu under Sharpen/Shake Reduction. The Adobe Photoshop version of the Shake Reduction tool does the same stuff that the PSE version does but it has more controls and is more adjustable.

Well, some more guessing here. If you are referring to the Enhance tool or other tools in the Guided Edit section of Photoshop Elements there are no tools like that in Photoshop CC 2017 but you can get the same effect with other tools. The Enhance in Guided Edit simply increases the color saturation of the image, you can do that in Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 with Image/Adjustments/Hue-Saturation or Image/Adjustments/Vibrance. If you are referring to the Shadows-Highlights control that I used on the black cat then you will find that in Image/Adjustments/Shadows-Highlights. I will be putting up more Photoshop CC 2017 videos this summer. Am I getting close?

New video coming soon on sharpening on Photoshop CC 2017. It will be a longer video because there are more tools to use with the Unsharp Mask being a favorite. But the same basic concepts apply, you can only sharpen so much before you begin to degrade the image and you can't add in new detail that doesn't already exist in the original. So sharpening is really all about making the existing detail more apparent. I am working on putting up a bunch of videos over the next couple of months answering some of these technique questions that I have been receiving. Of course I will be mixing in more projects as well.

Why make it so complicated? Just go to Enhance, Sharpen, and choose how much.
This is an overview of different techniques. Depending on the photo some will work better than others. I usually use Sharpen, but sometimes it doesn't do a good job
