If Danny Briere, after making a few modest moves, is done adding to/altering the Philadelphia Flyers NHL roster, how would Charlie & Bill grade the second-year GM?

I like TK. He should be traded before the big contract with no movement clause.
Exactly. By the time the team is competitive, TK will be overpaid and a solid third liner.
Torts is a good coach. He is bad for a rebuild. We needed to finish within the top ten.

I usually like your points and general logic of team building. I disagree with the TK analysis and especially the comp to oshie. Oshie’s 8 year deal started in his age 31 season and will end at age 38. TK’s would start at age 28 and end at 35. That’s a MASSIVE difference.
Could it blow up in their faces? Maybe. But so could anything. We’re betting probabilities and i think the curve of his play on this contract is much more likely to resemble someone like Tavares’ deal in Toronto. Tavares also signed at age 28. His play has tailed off a bit this year but he’s still a top 6 player. He’s not totally useless, just a bit overpaid. You can, and should live with that. And if he’s still useful at the end of the year you look to sign him again to a shorter term at a lower number. Michkov needs someone to play with.
You can’t Hinkie hockey. There are 20 players on the ice each night. When you get a guy with surplus value at pick 24, you don’t jettison him at his first deal. We shouldn’t aspire to be the Pirates or Rays of hockey.
8x8 would be a good deal. The cap is going up. do it.
Travis Konecny is not close to John Tavares. That guy had 90 pts seasons back in the mid 2010s dead puck era. TK hasn't surpassed 70 once in his career.
Signing him is not a good idea. At maximum you can only sign him for 4 years. And even then, we're not a contender so why bother keeping him around when we can get more things to build the future with
@@kod8933 i was talking about the pattern of production over the course of a 7-8 year deal. Not how good a player he is. Tavares signed for 11 AAV 6 years ago at age 28 on a much lower cap. If he were the same player today, he might get 13M. With TK we seem to be talking about 8-9.5 AAV right now, so it’s a different category of player clearly.
In the last 2 years, Tavares went from an elite first line center to a very very good second line center over the course of his deal. I could see TK go from being a good first line winger to an average second liner or very good 3rd liner in the last year or 2 of the deal. I’m okay with that.
Thats the key, I don’t see this potential drop off coming until the 7th and 8th year of the potential deal. If this team can’t build a contender around Michkov, TK, and whatever other young talent sticks within 4 years, they have made other problems and bad decisions outside of TK. There are many, many players in this league who are productive into their mid-30s - Kane, Kopitar, Giroux, Marchand, Perron, Benn, Henrique, Marchessault, the list goes on. This league is less physical, and the players are much better conditioned than they were 15 years ago. Players can make it well into their 30s.
Not signing a player like this in their prime because you’re worried they might get a little worse in 6 years is dumb.
You don’t trade Konecny for future assets because unlike the many future assets in this system, you have certainty on what Konecny can be. Right now, he is 100% a top 6 forward who can score. There are not many other players on the team we can say that about. You want a guy like that on the team so that when the cap finally clears up, this is a team that FAs actually want to come to and you don’t have to overpay them. You get there by being a competitive team.
Charlie’s TK point is 💯.
I remember when New Era had the licensing rights for NHL hats and never bought one 15 or whatever years ago. The Fanatics hats have been trash.
Since there's been no TK signing, it feels like they may trade him (and laughton) at the deadline when his value is higher. I'm all for it
The TJ Oshie comparison is ludicrous. He was far older when he signed that deal, and is not the offensive player TK is.
Hextall blew it too because that also wasnt a rebuild. They had one 2nd overall pick. You cant rebuild stockpiling middle 1st round picks and they are doing the same bloody thing again. It didnt work then and it wont work now.
This is their version of a tank year. They are worse off on the blue line and goal. Teams that underperformed last year jump them. Devils Sabres senators. Utah Calgary could improve. Now you’re drafting in the top 7 at worst with plenty of trade capital. The same people complaining danny hasn’t done anything are the same people who were freaking out that they would shortcut the rebuild.
Keep TK, he’ll accept a reasonable offer.
Hexy's plan was good. But vets fell off too quick and prospects developed too slowly or not at all. The age gap between the old core and hopeful new core was too large. Our current roster is in much better shape with 24 year olds developing with 18-20 year olds looking to join shortly.

How were they going to trade any of the guys on the current roster for top end talent? The rebuild hinges on the 2025 draft. This offseason was always going to be a non story.
You trade them for draft assets. The flyers are too stupid to get a rebuild off the ground though.
Flyers sign TK then Bierre is Hextall. This team needs elite talent from other teams. I dont understand what there doing with him and even Laughton its enough move them
For all of this conjecture and hoping about guys becoming the 'second level support guys' for Michkov; we already have one, and his name is Travis Konecny. Re-signing the sure thing is obvious. 8x8 gets it done.
And it's an overpay that cost the team in 5 years when TK is 34 and busted like Atkinson but making 8 million dollars on top of Coots and Sanheim. Bad idea
