Love that you play moves you would make against a Human opponent and not an anti-computer strategy (though that might be interesting as another series as well). Love the idea of playing the Najdorf as black but my results have indicated otherwise haha. Loving this series Mr.Sadler, thank you so much.
Glad you're enjopying the series! ☺ Yeah it's pretty important with these opening lines to make sure what happens against the most common human lines. You somehow tend to forget that when you analyse so much with engines!
In July 2023, the Leela team introduced a feature called WDL (Win/Draw/Loss) Contempt. Behind this austere technical name, there's something amazingly cool! You tell Leela “Look I’m playing White against an opponent rated 400 ELO lower than me. Can you suggest some ideas in the opening to maximise my winning chances against such an opponent?” My blog entry matthewsadler.me.uk/engine-chess/setting-up-wdl-contempt-for-leela-in-nibbler/on explains how to set this feature up.
The whole 7.Qf3 in the Bg5 najdorf to play Qg3 and win 3 queen side passers for a piece is an old Bronstein idea (David Bronstein vs Miguel Najdorf, Buenos Aires 1954). It's amazing Leela likes it. Been loving this wdl series, Qh5 idea in Caro Kann is a banger, would love to see Leela demolish the petroff! 🙂
I'm trying to find an older Video that covered an insane attack by stockfish. Sadly I don't remember much, but leela was blind to the key move and thought she could defend till it was to late. I don't think the actual game was against leela though. There was a defensive idea where black gave a check with the knight to whites king on e1 which looked dumb and could just be taken, but had a deep point to it. Does anyone know which game am talking about?
These are brilliant Matthew. Will you do the same with openings as black? Seeing what Leela Contempt does in the KID, for example, would be fascinating.
I play the najdorf so this is the most interesting video for me. also I am waiting for what lela will recommend against giri course, maybe a top player might pick this and try it in a super gm tournament.
Why do you think Leela doesn't recommend the main main lines? I often hear two things: 1. that you should play pretty much the same, no matter if the opponent 300 lower or higher rated than you, and 2. main main lines are main main lines for a reason, even if chess is draw anyway, and that reason is that main main lines give you the highest chance to win.
Mmm I don't think 2) is right. I mean there is no reason to avoid main lines in principle, but you often find that you have better success playing main lines if your opponent also has to prepare against unusual stuff you have played too. And the same sort of applies to 1) as well. In fact, at some stage I saw opponents 300 points lower as a good opportunity to try out new stuff and get new openings in the database, forcing people to prepare those as well from now on!
Hello, Gm Sadler! I tried to replicate the process in Nibbler but I think I didn't do it right. Could you please let me know what I should change in the engine.json file? This is what I have atm in the engine.json file: "WeightsFile": "810026.lc0", "WDLDrawRateReference": 0.58, "ContemptPerspective": "white", "WDLCalibrationElo": 2700, "WDLEvalObjectivity": 0.5, "ScoreType": "WDL_mu", "MovesLeftThreshold": 0.5, "Contempt": "400"
When you do List Sent Options, do you see these options being listed in Nibbler? There’s a comment by another user under the article on my blog that might also be useful. Somehow copying stuff into the engines.json file didn’t go well even though it looked right (specifically the quotation marks) Make sure as well that all the accolades are matching.

Anti computer wouldn't work well against a pure neural net
Still the best and the deepest chess channel in English.
Thanks Yuri! 😊😊

Ah yes the Petroff indeed! I'll have a look at that too!
Unique, interesting, and instructive series - look forward to next videos! :)
Thanks dna! Glad you're enjoying the series! Been great fun to make it! ☺

Hmmm I'm trying to think... I've got lots of insane Stockfish attacks but this description doesn't ring a bell yet...

Thanks! 😊😊 Yes I’m going to prepare a few things like that for future videos!
great job !
Thanks! ☺
What is the stockfish /Leela TV opening web site database mentioned in the begging of video please?
chessdb.cn Make sure to switch to Western chess and English 😉
@@SiliconRoadChess thanks very much grandmaster

Yep we'll see whether any elite GMs start using Leela with contempt - would be really interesting to see!

That's another sicilian i wont play lol
😂 Ah the Najdorf is pretty good!
Looks like Leela tricked you. You had a6,b5 and white play a3 and yet your pawns could not march any further.
Well I wasn't doing too badly up until quite late, but just got confused with tha tactics!
