We used pedals back in the 80s like delay echo reverb and even a sampling pedal along with the Dr Rhythm drum machine. Malo and IAmSight have taken the pedals to the next level
Around 29:00 you talked about things you feel you can’t do in daw. The meris mercury 7 can be controlled with an expression pedal. It feels very musical to use that reverb.
23:51 same same! This whole video was something else. Its kinda like it brought peace even though i may not understand or what pedals is as much as you guys but just the conversation and topics you guys touched base was like a healthy meal for me. Yea its nice watching videos of you guys sampling a sound and or making a beat but its also nice just listening to topics about music just like this video. My respect to you both💯 im now gonna do more research on pedals😅😂
DJ Cut Chemist uses them when he does DJ Live Sets and its an awesome concept and relevant way of mixing and using sampling loops for intros of non stop mixing.. Also DJ Mark Farina too with his Mushroom Jazz Sets
I do a similar thing with the Rytm and an OTO boum. The Rytm has really good analog compression and distortion out of the mains but I can split the low end parts out separate and process in the Boum. It's an amazing sound. I also agree with printing the reverb and delays from a pedal or from the Rytm in my case, since I can control the Rytm Fx in the parameter locks and thats super powerful imo. Its like the basic track is done in a standalone box and I love that. Keeps things simple for my mind.
Great to see you both together discussing some of this stuff I’ve been interested into getting. Looking forward to seeing another video of both of you guys, perhaps doing a beat collaboration. 🤞🏻
Yo this was a dope video! So happy to see other people embracing the MPC Live 2. I love mine, and its totally changed my workflow for the better! However I wanna say that having an outboard mixer to control pedal sends and returns / EQ can be super helpful. My current setup is that my MPC controls all the midi timing including Ableton and then I use Ableton to do in the box effects or route out per channel to my outboard gear when jamming. Then I flip things around once ive found a loop by recording through the board intro Ableton. From there I arrange and do effects / additions in Ableton. The hub of the whole scenario is a 90's Mackie board and I love the EQs because it can make anything sound phat, besides glueing the instruments together.
What an inspiring conversation! Always nice to see producers interact with each other, since it adds so many side-topics which probably wouldn't come up otherwise. I began with FX, and pedals in particular, fairly recently, and thus started with quite a basic but extensive digital MultiFX pedal (compressor, distortion, amp sim, cab sim, EQ, modulation, delay, reverb). Not aiming at using it in a high-end production (as, of course, the individual FX in a MultiFX aren't _that_ high-end), but rather to get a general feeling for which kind of FX I might eventually go for in a more high-class / stand-alone version. Anyways, based on my limited experience, I just have to agree that pedals add so many sound texturing abilities without the rabbit hole of a DAW.
My reverb and a Zoom CDR go on my send and return of the mixer. So I can add different amounts of effects to different channels while still having the same reverb effect on all channels instead of different reverbs that simulate different spaces.
Lumidee ‘Uh Oh’ - YES this groove! Re: video topic, feeling this discussion a lot. Shifting into production from DJing, I have my MPC One permanently connected to an Allen & Heath Xone 96. 6 outs with analog EQs, 2 flexible filters w distortion and they sound SO buttery. Def makes my drums knock way harder. It’s so easy to mix as you go, and even perform the track, bringing elements in/out live using faders etc. It’s an expensive unit though, probably tough to justify just for production. In combo with the Analog Heat mk2, this is enough sound design to keep me occupied for a while :)
I got some killer pedal suggestions; Lauren Audio Mustang, which is a copy of a Neve console!! Also, Empress and Malekko make dope compression pedals that can sidechain(mono) DOD rubberneck delay is awesome and inexpensive!! And the dread box flanger
JESUS F CHRIST!!!!!! What a gold of an interview!!! I'm following both of this guys (me and my family included) for a solid time now, and it is such a precious thing to have. Different opinion but same mutual respect and you as a viewer of this video get THE DEPTH of the experience from both of them. Great content!!!!! AND P.S. It would be definitevly be cool you you guys made some track!!! You got potential and you understand eachother
If you want some flexible pedals, Earthquaker Devices always tests their stuff on a variety of instruments including synths and modular stuff so it's great for send/return shenanigans in DAWs
Empress Zoia! Essentially you can craft or download nearly anything you can dream up it is essentially a modular setup in pedal form also it can either be 2 mono inputs or stereo, same on the way out. and also can be controlled by midi or cv and has midi in and out it can also be made into a sequencer sampler looper synth with a ton of utility and effects… pretty much modular setups are how all pedals are made so you can combine multiple custom effects to create new pedals that haven’t been done… it’s really amazing. Multiple versions of of empresses reverbs delays distortions oscillation granular you name it! Look into it for real.
I love both of these beatsmiths! I just watched this video twice 🤓 grace and peace to both of you! I never knew Malos background was engineering, now his niche is really starting to standout from the rest of the other broducers I watch. Great video guys!
I’ve been getting really into guitar pedals with my MPC Live as well. I recently got an SSL Big Six and it’s “forced” me into controller mode - outboard sources just sound so much better tracked through its converters. Plus it gives me a few compressors to play with (if anyone has suggestions for the LMC let me know, I haven’t used it yet!). Gives me some mono channels, stereo channels and a nice clean analog chain. I also have a reamp box to do some parallel processing with my pedals and it gives me more headroom (or at least that’s what I perceive based on my experience running pedals w/ line level sources)
Ha! I was watching and enjoying and the Colour Box was very much in mind to me as y'all were having your conversation. Then, out comes the Colour Box! Made me laugh out loud, Cheers.
Funnily enough I entered the beat making world after be in bands for decades so I had already had an extensive array of pedals and first starting using them with my MPC 1000 which is amazing. I feel there was a perceived division between the band and production worlds and along with gatekeeping from the band side which is now dissolving thanks to open minded people like yourself and Malo Beats. Pedals are tangible and are not going to disappear if you forget a product code, they are also very immediate workflow wise, saying that I do like to automate my plug ins during mixing in Ableton. Some to look into for reverb especially is the Source Audio “True Spring” or my favorite the Surry Bear Reverb which had a real spring, works best parallel but gets and amazing nasty distortion when you saturate to signal going straight in, Strymon “El Capistan” is excellent with delay, reverb, wow-flutter and drive.
If we're talking distortion, the gnarliest is Liverpool Pedals Hungry Beaver, and for a distortion with bonkers envelope following its gotta be the Montreal Assembly PURPLL. For stereo 'making everything sound better' tho, its the Neon Egg Planetarium 2 - a chorus and reverb feeding into a delay which then feeds into a compressor with external sidechain in and thru... Its beautiful, makes everything sound amazingly wiiiiiiiiide.
So great to hear this conversation. I'm in the thralls of learning to mix and it's good to hear that instinct for the 'rough' mix is usually the best. It kind of takes the pressure off mixing and get me finishing songs, which is why I love both you guys, always inspiring to watch both your channels.
Great way to jump straight into the conversation..... I can't say I've got a extensive background in mixing but I definitely understand how it can take away from the creative process and get you stuck in another realm... Even using the MPCX in controller mode and constantly getting vsts (free ones especially) .... Sometimes I feel like it sucks the life out of my music.,. Sometimes. Lol Good sh*t though..!
i still have a mk1 live and changed everything i take that thing to cookouts, production it gets marketed way too for hiphop ill load acoustic kits on it and have old drummers drum the shit out of it, and just people jamming, its worth the cost used if you can get it 550 600 or less
basically, that's what rack effects were for before DAW. Most of these 19" effects can be bought for really cheap (exept some lexicon and eventide) and you can't go that wrong with an alesis 3630 ;)
For delay check out the new Boss Space Echo RE-202, Strymon Volante or delay/verb the Specular Tempus by GFI System. For straight reverb the Empress Reverb is the top of the list for sure.
Re: Reverb - Once I tried a Lexicon PCM92 I couldn’t go back. Print the 💯 wet verb track and blend it in against your signal. It SOUNDS expensive. If you can get your hands on one give it a wurl. It’s more time consuming, but totally worth it.
You know, with the new update to akai force, it’s a whole different machine now. It’s gone from questionable, to outstanding. Only thing it’s missing now, is the super expensive new synths, and I’m sure those are coming too.
I just got one myself to pair with my live 2! I’m still wrapping my head around how to utilize it best, especially with how deep and powerful it is… I also play guitar and figured it would be something I can grow with
@@Eight-Bit-Hustler I pre-ordered my Zoia and I'm still learning, it's an endless pool of possibilities! I definitely recommend checking out Christopher H. M. Jacques channel for inspiration with Zoia and if you haven't, use a midi channel on the live 2 to modulate random effects parameters until you find some stuff you like and then run with it!
When you mentioned the JHS colorbox being like a rack mount module you were more correct than you knew, that pedal came from their (out of production) 500 series rack module.
I'm surprised you say that the MPC's Air Reverb sounds good. It's the Achilles heel of the MPC to me and the reason why I'm so easily dazzled by other synths. Really, the synth plug-ins all sound great, but the reverb is lackluster. If they fix that, I would have a lot more fun on the MPC. My workaround is to use the MPC in controller mode and replacing the reverbs with Valhalla SuperMassive when in the final stages of mixing.
Me esposa plays the guitar and she was wondering why guitar pedals have become this small, I had to explain it’s the beat makers out there they’re a huge market lol
most people who learn an instrument or beatmaking reach a point where they get frustrated about their sound, and that point is where they know their skills and instrument isn't the issue. enters the world of mixing, mastering, room treatment, which is indeed infinite... and one can easily loose themselves in that world and stop really making music. Entering that world comes with using alot FX, and realizing that a little goes a long way, and that comp and eq are core things, and (wrongfully) think that phasers and flangers or other effects aren't good things anymore thus looking down on limited guitar pedals... "if a simple SSL buss comp cost a couple grands, how could a pedal worth barely 100$ help with a mix?" is the thought, mostly. But they're wrong, of course
Great stuff! Good for us guitar players that already have too many pedals lying around ….helps to already have extra creativity on hand without spending more $$ 🤣🙄
HOW did I not know this guy.. Thanks for introducing him Ricky! Gotta go, I have a channel binge to do.
We used pedals back in the 80s like delay echo reverb and even a sampling pedal along with the Dr Rhythm drum machine. Malo and IAmSight have taken the pedals to the next level
Love to see great content creators linking up!! We need more of this in our space. Great job guys! 🙏🏾👊🏾

At first, it seemed like it was just me being a nerd...turns out, all of my favorite producers are also into pedals. Good stuff!
Love this collaboration!

Awesome interview, my friend. I'm gonna check out Malo here in a minute. Thanks!
So great to hear Malo on your channel and his honesty on only using the MPC to make tracks - a KISS process in practice (keep it simple stupid)
Dope!! two of my fav youtubers, good shit!
Oh now I need to see a collab with Ricky & Emily Hopkins and her pedal collection & harps!

All facts!

Some of the line 6 multi FX boxes have so many distortions they're great to have if you're not sure exactly what type will work best for you.

Beat making is like therapy
Ya'll should just make an album now...

Malo is right it’s the sound. It can be simple but if the swing and sound gets me then I’m hooked.
Best colab
etsy pedals 👀
i have quite a few handmade ones that I love
shoutout: timebox instruments and recovery effects
what are the ones you have?
He's in the rabbit hole. Malos next vid is gonna be about selling his pedals to fund a modular. Haha
Hahahaha I was showing him some FX modules and he’s like “wait… what?!”
if you don't have any money to buy pedals, there are a TON of free and/or cheap APPs for any old iphone, with audio input and TRRS 1/8 to 1/4 cable
i do this with Octatrack, i don't have an MPC
Malo is thee Dude.
Just started resampling stuff through some mod pedals(walrus and Chase Bliss) at extremely low levels and got some cool master effects.
oh Grandmother
make a Video about it
pls
thanks
sorry for many messages, so excited
sick colab boys u da best music
These 2 Greats together is Awesome!!
Great convo
YOOOO my boy Malo! 🔥🔥🔥
you two....nice!
Using pedals for the MPC, taking it back to the 90’s.

I'm pretty sure that Malo and I are wearing the same glasses. Calvin represent.
I also recently bought the platform pedal because I wanted a hardware compressor. Because the Oto boum was to expensive
Hey in the title it should be uppercase "ii"

I came here to say exactly this!
It may not be good for Malo who likes limitations, but I cannot recommend the Empress Zoia enough as an mpc companion!

Strymon night sky pedal video please. love your work 👍🏻
@rickytinez Was emailed to claim a prize ? Just seen it ? Is this legit ?

Pedals are cool but hacking & Modifying pedals is where the true sound is at, I never used stock sounds! 🎛
