    I live in NC but came to Vero Beach FL, to work awhile. My boss bought me tickets to watch SpaceX Falcon Heavy Launch at Kennedy Space Center. It was Awesome. I got to meet some of the Engineers and see the Rocket before it launched.

      Awesome! I was watching from Playalinda Beach just 3 miles away! Were you on top of the VAB?

      +Dylan Thompson There were different prices based on what time you arrived and what you had access to. They ranged from $120 to $250 but mine were a gift. It did include a shirt, a minuture replica, and some other swag. On a normal day you can tour the Space Center for cheaper, meet an astronaut, and see Spaceships that went to the moon. I highly recommend if you are interested. Another launch is coming up fairly soon.

      Playalinda Beach was just 10$ so poor college kids like me can watch launches at just 3 miles away, great views too!

    I am going to be forever amused that there is a convertible in space. Like, I WANT to be annoyed, because I'm super annoyed by that disco ball, but those images of Starman driving a Tesla through space are so whimsical, I can't be.

      Well, NOW you've done it. Great. Now the conspiracy theorists are gonna show up and it's gonna start off kind of amusingly about aliens and lizard people and then the HAARP and Flat Earthers are going to drop by and the next thing you know, it's all on fire while people scream about pizza parlors.
      Thanks.

  • @illuwe

    It's not really as big of a deal that the core didn't land properly as people think. The purpose of this test flight was to gain valuable information about the Falcon Heavy and it did that better than anyone really expected I believe. Also I'd like to point out that SpaceX wasn't going to be using any of the boosters on future missions again anyway since they're all block 4 and not block 5 which is the newest booster and thus not what they want to use for customer missions.

    • @illuwe
      @illuwe 6 років тому +10

      As far as I heard the third burn that set the final course for Starman went well. Also Starman won't actually be going to Mars or to Mars' orbit. It will be orbiting the Sun with an elliptical orbit that passes through both Earth's and Mars' orbits but won't actually interact with either planet.

    • @DehimVerveen
      @DehimVerveen 6 років тому +8

      Starman's aphelion actually far exceeded Mars' orbit. Here's a picture of its actual orbit: twitter.com/elonmusk/status/961083704230674438 The first block 5 mission will probably be in April: Iridium-6 (51-55) / GRACE-FO 1-2 2018 will be a great year for spacex. We just had the first falcon heavy launch, we're soon gonna get more and we'll get block 5 which will bring rapid reusability. Then we'll also get an uncrewed crew dragon launch probably in august and crewed probably in december and next year we might be seeing some bfr spaceship tests! It's gonna be exciting!

    • @Top_Weeb

      Mmmmm I can't wait to see a BFR flight test. So excited for the future of this company now. The FH launch was just so beautiful to me. And yeah to the op, the failure of the center core is commonly understood to be a minor disappointment, and not a failure. But I do know there are people claiming the opposite. The important people know what a success this was.

    • @GodFirstnl
      @GodFirstnl 6 років тому +9

      Tvegal yeah they will reuse the titanium grid fins. Those are very expensive and hard to make, so Elon is glad those boosters landed. Furthermore, the landing itself proved that the system works, and they collected a lot of valuable data, which is really important for future success... And that synchronous landing was again great positive publicity for SpaceX. So no, they didn't land for nothing.

    • @SecretRaginMan
      @SecretRaginMan 6 років тому +37

      Loui Coleman Why are all of you so obsessed with this? He said they could reuse them they wanted to.

    • @deSloleye
      @deSloleye 6 років тому +2

      He's specifically said they won't be reused, none of the potentially recovered rockets would be because they're not Block 5 first stages. Falcon Heavy was launched with obsolete tech. They'll scavenge the good bits but the next Falcon Heavy will be all Block 5 Falcon 9 units, with the centre stage a special falcon heavy type falcon 9. The side boosters will probably be reused gear, I would say, since they're successfully catching so many of them these days.

    • @Dukhanstmichmal
      @Dukhanstmichmal 6 років тому +1

      SpaceX is also not even trying to recover most of their older first stages (Block 3) at the moment because they are running out of space to put them all and want to switch over to using only Block 4 and 5 designs because they are much quicker to refurbish and more durable.

  • @indigodragon0613
    @indigodragon0613 6 років тому +4

    The boosters are version 3 falcon 9s which means they won’t be used again. From now on, SpaceX will be using version 5 falcon 9s.
    Falcon heavy may be used for moon missions, but it won’t be used for mars missions. That title will go to the BFR, which will be the largest rocket ever made. It will be able to transport around 80 passengers per flight.

    Gravitational lensing doesn't actually bend the light itself, but rather It bends the fabric of space in which the light travels in. It's like changing the riverbank so the water in it follows that new path. Rather quite cool :) Go science!

      You tend to learn more from failures than you do successes. The number of things that had to go right to make this mission successful is insane, but it also means that potential problems were not found. It is bitter sweet for engineers when things fail. While it does show they got it wrong, It educates them in new and powerful ways. Failure, in its own way, is a success. That is why people keep telling others that the only failure is in not trying.

    They already announced they wouldn't reuse these boosters, they are revision 4, they will...however, reuse the new grid fins! They are made from titanium and had to be made special because of the different air flow of the side boosters vs the nose cone boosters. They basically have to bite more actual air rather than stuff deflected on the nose cone, and that air is super hot due to compression heating.

    • @sirBrouwer

      It just makes it easier to put them on display at the Kennedy center museum when they land next door. I'd call that a great "reuse" for them. Heck take all of the stages that are not going to be reused and make a freaking procession way to the entrance of the Kennedy visitor center.
      Go driving through Huntsville Alabama on interstate 565 past the US Space and Rocket complex. Those things are pretty cool to leave laying around.
      Even better...close the Kennedy visitor center and area completely, build a landing pad and land a rocket inside the center as the display model. How crazy would that be?...."Here's the documentation of the crazy job involved with our display of the actual retired space shuttle Atlantis. It was strapped to a plane, streets were closed, power lines were taken down...etc...and here's the Falcon 9... it landed here... all by itself..."

      @DrewLonmyPillow 6 років тому +4

      Just to add on, the cores used in this test we're Block 3 and 4. All future launches are going to be Block 5 boosters only.
      According to Elon, the only reason it was important to get the side boosters back is because they were equipped with titanium grid fins, which are both expensive and time prohibitive to manufacture. So while the boosters themselves won't be reused, the grid fins will be stripped off for use in future side cores.
      It would have been really cool if all three cores were recovered, but none of them will be reused.

    • @Sovek86
      @Sovek86 6 років тому +1

      not really. There are some massive technical problems to solve, not the least of which is relighting said engines, and as we found out, not as easy as you make it out to be after the center booster crashed into the drone ship at 300MPH after multiple engines failed to reignite. Just look at what kind of effort was taken to recover the SRBs from the Space Shuttle.
      Then you have to account for saving fuel for landing...... this lowers total payload to orbit, to compensate you need more fuel, and to compensate for extra fuel you'll need more fuel. Tyranny of rockets comes to mind.
      Then lets not forget what those things are being subjected to. Incredible vibrations and g-forces. This can cause metal fatigue and even failure of the launch vehicle. Should there be a problem in ANYTHING the entire thing can go up in seconds, as we found out in the case of some previous launches. In order to engineer for multiple launches you have to make it stronger, and then you need to refurbish. This costs money, then what happens when said rocket blows up? In the case of Challenger that was $1.7 BILLION. ouch. In the case of NASA this reuseablity cost taxpayers $6.67B/year on average, with 135 flights. Thats averaging 4.5 flights per year over its lifetime, with each launch costing a whopping $1.45B per launch. Musk launched the FH for what? $90M? chump change compared to the STS. I'd say that Musk could afford to loose all three parts of the first stage at that cost.

    • @sion8
      @sion8 6 років тому

      The Space Shuttle had minimal reusage of the boosters and of course the Space Shuttle itself was also reused, but earlier manned programs did not have reusability of any components and the rockets that are used by NASA that are for probes, most of them don't have anything to be reused, which I as well can't find reason for! All the space agencies should have long ago figured out a way to reuse components as much as possible so that it wouldn't be as expensive for the governments to be able to continue having space programs.

    • @philrabe910
      @philrabe910 6 років тому +1

      The STS tossed out the giant center fuel tank on every launch, and every shuttle flew with essentially New, not refurbished engines. The turnaround costs were enormous, and as you said the SRB's were the only semi reusable component of the launch stack, but even they would be torn down and rebuilt, as opposed to just refilling the tanks like on a Falcon 9. and the Shuttle was deadly. 14 Astronauts and two vehicles in 130 some flights is terrible!

    • @sion8
      @sion8 6 років тому

      +Phil Rabe
      Yeah, that big orange tank was never reused again! But, like I said all space agencies need to find ways to reuse some of their rocket components to be able to be cheaper to operate so that the science they could provide can be cheaper overall for all.

      ya but he doesn't have to really play politics in the way NASA has to. Everything NASA says and does, effects how much it gets and what it's allowed to do.
