- Magnus Carlsen Reinvented His Chess Opening by playing a brand new chess variation of the mighty plow, pawn to h4. Carlsne loves playing dubious chess openings and now we see him developing modern plow theory in this cutting edge of chess. This chess game played in the titled Tuesday chess tournament, 2nd January 2024 against Sergei Zhigalko

It's just fucking incredible how he toys with chess masters at this point. Absolute destruction.
Hard to know if he's trying to break people out of prep/theory, he's developing new ways of playing or if he's just bored. Whatever, he wins.
I honestly think he's a bit bored and playing around and having fun. I think that's the primary of it, it's not like he NEEDS to break people out of theory... I think he might be enjoying this chess.
Definitely not a new way of playing, and I bet he'd say don't try this at home. He only does it in blitz to get them out of theory because they won't have enough time to punish the "bad" playing like they would with classic time controls. Meanwhile though they eat up time since they're out of book and it's Magnus' positional intuition against theirs instead of his preparation versus theirs.
There’s nothing more for Magnus to accomplish. Yeah, he’s probably trolling a bit, but he’s also getting away from standard theory and exploring new concepts. I wonder if embracing that same mindset would have prolonged Fischer’s career.
I think all artists reach this point - you feel a need to break all the «rules» in order to remain creative. It helps that it is a strategy to win time as well.
he just bored as fuck
He's showing that he's extremely good at adapting, not just about learning lines and pure theory
Exactly. Showing the world pure chess and it's beauty.
to me it seems that magnus likes to play as far away from theory as possible as early as possible, in a sense this is what fisher always strived for with his critique on chess that it has become more about meorization than creativity
Or, alternatively, both Magnus and Bobby were head and shoulders above their peers and can play "bad openings" and get away with it.
Remember when Fischer was ranting about hating chess because everything was just memorizing lines and there was a lack of creativity and joyful play? Well, it seems Magnus understood it and decided to do something about it. He knows how to deliver a strong middlegame and a strong endgame too and that's all he needs. It doesn't matter what he plays at opening, he's thinking in how to reach that middlegame he's already seeing in his mind. In Kasparov words: He squeezes water out of stones.
This makes it clear why Magnus is the GOAT. Bobby complained while Magnus found the road out of the forest where 2+2 = 5.
He isn't playing scrubs like you and me, he is beating Grandmasters. Some of the very best players in the world. I think he is attacking the the whole world of computer memorization of openings and human robots. Showing that the game is supposed to be beautiful.
It's amazing to see what Magnus is doing these days, and thank you for documenting it.
time after time Magnus shows he is only playing for the endgame, the openings are just for making his opponents feel uncomfortable. another great game from the PlowMaster. thanks Epic
It's not that the opening is good, it's that it's different. Whatever gets them out of their starch pressed memorization.
Carlsen's real opening is therefore The Ghost, which is the opening that has no book, regardless of which move. No bones to anatomize.
Carlsen is not just an end-game beast but also an opening wizard ❤
I'm a simple man. Magnus plows, I click.
Magnus's strategy is very simple. However it only works if you're Magnus Carlsen.
1) Play a crap opening.
2) Let your opponent sweat and use up their clock.
3) Wait until they flub due to time pressure and then crush them.
3b) If they don't flub then just start clearing out pieces to get to the endgame. Which you will win. Because you're Magnus Carlsen.
haha "magnus carlsen has been terrorising the elite" awesome phrasing.
Yes. Very interesting.
When Magnus sits down the door will be open marked EXCITING 😊
Now THIS ONE dragged the opponent out of Theory and it wasted him.
Congratulations on the growth of you channel, it's well deserved.
Thanks a lot!
These guys are so adept at theory, that the real chess begins the moment they leave theoretical territory, and go brain vs. brain.
Magnus is saying “Why not do that from the very first move?” He’s announcing to his opponents that, brain vs. brain, he's unstoppable. No one has proven him wrong.
What would the eval bar say if it could see the clocks lol. Magnus is a genius at drawing people into weird games where his faster tactics brain wipes the floor with them.
I'm not a GM by any means, but it seems like chess is such a game of memorization of lines at high levels. Magnus playing lines that haven't been studied make it so the stronger chess player will win, because there isn't a data bank of what move to make next. Is this right or off base?
Right players have to improvise with their own reactions as you say if it’s not opening theory
You are right, BUT Magnus is also accepting a disadvantageous position as the cost of going out of known lines. If the other player can keep their advantage, they stand a better chance of winning. Magnus is also avoiding known "draw" lines because most players are happy to get a draw against him.
@@jrd33 Knowing that my assumption was right makes me respect the big guy even more.
Queue Jesse saying "He can't keep getting away with this!!"
Magnus is just playing with people now... jeez
Hello and greetings from Germany.
At 2:43:
"Zwischenzug" is pronounced with two very clear "z" = "\ts" as in English "tsunami".
Both of the "z" are like you pronounced the first one.
The second "z" for "Zug" is neither soft as in "dizzy" nor sharp like in "sun".
And the "g" in the end is not a soft "g" like in "good", but pronounced as a "k" like in "Luke".
Thanks for your great videos!
Thanks very much! Comparing to English words like tsunami is really helpful I’ll temper that and the K at the end tsiszentsuk kinda thing by sounds of it , I’ll try anyway haha
You make these videos in such an entertaining way, please continue!
Thanks a lot will do!
Yes, very easy to follow and not overcomplicating like many other people on youtube do. Thank you, I am really enjoying these @@epicchess2021
Great video again, thanks. Would be interesting to see your analysis of some other player's games. It can feel a bit like the Magnus appreciation channel - he is rather special though.
Yeah defo I’ll mix it up a bit soon don’t wanna kill it haha thanks for feedback appreciate it
The reverse Scandinavian Plow? Scary stuff.
Moves pawn without opening minor pieces, gambits while behind on tempo, first non-pawn move is a queen one, disregards all principles. MFW i'm Magnus Carlsen
Only a highly tactical player would be able to smash such openings.
I would never want to castle my king against Magnus - better to leave the king be and keep it far away from the deadly plow
is the strategy here to play moves that the other side doesn’t expect and therefore needs to spend time to think about, so they waste time at the beginning, which doesn’t really matter, so when time actually plays a role at the end, magnus has a huge advantage.
But those moves still need to be good moves with an idea behind them, he's not just throwing around a bunch of random moves and figuring it out later.
Sub optimal opening moves that offer great rewards for the mid game is the play, hence d4 sacrifice to fast track Queen development specifically being the example in this game.
Magnus "Mr Plow" Carlsen.
Modern Plow Theory (MPT) is rapidly advancing!
I have to say you are "plowing" through the YT opposition right now
Haha thanks
"Zwischenzug" pronounciation now much better! Thanks again for the daily dose of chess James :-)
Haha thanks a lot still work to be done tho!
that's the Queen's plow opening
It's pronounced 'TSvishenTSug' and the 'u' is pronounced like 'oo' (like boo). Imagine there is a real 't' there before the 's': that's how the 'z' is pronounced in German. Thanks for making me laugh in every video. Always appreciate a good plow theory analysis.
Thanks very much I’ll keep working at it ! Glad you’re enjoying cheers for watching
3rd sensible option around 10:10 is queen sacrifice
Magnus had 1:42 left on the clock when Sergei resigned. Surely the other players should be catching on by now and ditch opening theory...
Anyway I'm enjoying Magnus playing opening moves like a beginner and beating GM's.
I always play my best and deepest chess when I fuck up an opening, it just opens up different and novel opportunities that your opponent hasn't experienced and wasn't expecting. Opening theory has turned chess into a series of mindless conventions that just disregards the level of possibility there is in chess.
That was the usual shenanigans from Magnus. Thanks James.😊
I liked your "Zwischenzug".
Just really good.
Getting better! 👍🏻Let me try again to be more clear: Tswischentsook, where "ook" is pronounced as in "book".
I am going to crack this one in a video soon haha thanks very much
When you get so good at the game you start doing challenges
Why is this so entertaining to watch.. He is just playing with his food.. damn Magnus
I think Carlsen is playing those sub optimal moves just so he can get an opening called up after himself.
Magnus frequently pulls off these high wire acts for his and our entertainment … and survives. We are living in a golden age of chess.
"Modern Plow Theory" (!?) !!! Epic
Magnus outplaying his opponent thanks for the insights James true enough Black wasting tempo pushing h6 when he could have been making a more offensive move elsewhere on the board Nice tactics by Magnus he utilized them well toward the end Thanks for the Game
he plows the fields and scatters the opposition....
it regardless of the opening they end up in an end game and Magnus just destroys every on at that point.
If tactical shots were weapons, Magnus is locked and loaded, and armed to the teeth!
Cutting edge Plow Theory!!!! :D
This new Magnus is scary as f**k
Magnus knows he can beat anybody if out of theory and that's what he does. Take the GMs out of theory as soon as possible. The plow is perfect for it!
Your Zwischenzug has developed nicely. Once again: both z"s are pronounced with the ts sound
Thanks a lot !
CAISSA smiles upon her favorite son, Magnus Houdini Copperfield Carlson the GOAT of chess endings and GOAT of unorthodox openings. Pretty much the rest of the players do not have a chance anymore against Magnus Houdini Copperfield.
10 years ago this style was called agressive coffe house chess, today it is bored Magnus needs to make it interesting.
Great game to watch
He's just killing people on time by doing weird stuff. It's hilarious to watch because these players have to think for themselves rather than rely purely on theory and game knowledge.
I think zwischenzug rhymes with jug. Idk, could be wrong!
How did this before the #1 YT cheese channel so quickly? Congrats sir!
Thanks a lot
@@epicchess2021 Thank you! Your videos are the right length, entertaining, they feature fun / interesting games, and they go into some depth but not so deep into alternative lines that one gets lost.
I'm also very interested in 960. I could imagine others who like the Plow might have some 960 interest as well.
Thanks again and best of luck to your channel's continued growth!
Modern plow theory haha. You’re the funniest and funnest chess channel. I love you
Haha thanks a lot glad you’re enjoying! Cheers for watching
He plays psychological war
Simon Williams is rolling over in his grave. RIP, Harry the H pawn.
Plow opening: the reversed Scandinavian.
Magnus stole Ginger GMs Harry the H-pawn
Plough unless you’re a septic
What is the advantage of the Pawn at h3?
Not sure there is one!
Qxd5? Takes pawn and threatens both knights?
you might be right I forget the specifics sorry!
He was busted, but slipped out
Just too strong
yes
Carlsne - a dubious spelling
The German 'z' is pronounces more like a English 'ts' and the 'u' is pronounced like an English 'oo'. So 'Zwischenzug' would be pronounced in English like 'tswishentsook'.
Ah thanks a lot!
hold on im a 900 elo and ive been doing this opening since i started psh hell i even push my knight back n fourth from g1 to g3 to g1 3 times in a row just troll then come back and slap em when they push there important pieces to far ive got the videos to prove
Why not Qxd5 at ~3:35
Sorry I forget all the details now and find it a bit hard jumping into each game with so many comments coming through
@@epicchess2021 not just nitpicking. I'm an amateur, so idk if I'm just not seeing something
Nice
if you're 2 mins down in a 3 min match you'll lose no matter what, imho
"modern plow theory" HEHEHEHHE
Plough or plow?
don't have a cow mate
Spelling it American way plus shorter to write
@@epicchess2021 😇
Marge Simpson is a Magnus Carlsen fangirl.
Zwischenzug is pronounced like Zvish en tsoog. You're close, but pronouncing like Swish en zoog. The 'ts' sound is basically an 's', but you start your tongue placed where you would when beginning a 't' (tip of tongue behind the upper front teeth). You don't actually pronounce the 't' at all.
Thanks a lot!
too much commentary going into all these variations. This video should be about Magnus Carlsen reinventing his chess opening, not a chess lesson. The drama is lost in the by.
Thanks for feedback
I really don't like what you have chosen to call this opening. Saying plow so much is gross. Could call it the Carlsen or anything else. Plow is just a gross word, not to mention the other connotations.
You need more Tsett in the Z of Zwischenzug. Tswishentsoog.
ah thank you
