Best Mitsubishi EVER?! 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-in hybrid EV) review

- Yes. I think this is a more astounding achievement than the Lancer Evo ever was.
That's because this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, has amazing real-world electric driving battery range, tremendous efficiency, and can also use its petrol engine to charge up, or add power, or drive hybrid.
It's a complicated idea, but it is executed exceptionally in this model. It's just a shame this technology is SO EXPENSIVE compared to the standard versions of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander range.
I've detailed all the stuff you should know in this comprehensive video review of this midsize SUV that rivals the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, GWM Haval H6 hybrid and plenty more.

There’s a reason why this is the best selling Plug-In Hybrid in the world. Mitsubishi 💪🏻❤️
Great review thanks!
Spending my time watching Outlander PHEV reviews while waiting for my Aspire to be delivered 😂
I've done about 3000km in my Aspire PHEV and I freakin' love it. The extra kit in the Aspire ticked all the boxes for my work and pleasure use - 1500watts of AC 240 volt power with you at all times for camping and photo expeditions, genuinely great to drive (the S-AWC system is more than just fancy words and makes twisty roads fun), really useful tech set with 360 cameras and such (great offroad), and enough room in the back to sleep comfortably for overnighters. Ground-clearance and approach and departure angles aside it's surprisingly capable offroad when it comes to putting traction to the ground, and being an EV driveline you can move along at a literal crawl speed with no need for a low range transmission or fear of stalling.
When you want to have fun, put it into Tarmac mode and it suddenly becomes a different beast on the road with the amount of acceleration you can get off the line and particularly out of corners - instant torque to all 4 wheels. Interesting to see your fuel economy figures as, like most testers have found, they are FAR better than the official figures from Mitsubishi (much like the performance figures - 6.5 seconds for 0-100 has been recorded) and the range you get out of a full charge and a full tank is getting close to 900km depending how you drive.
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you’re into it!!
Pity after all that you won't get a spare tyre .

@@troothhertz6297 I’ve been driving for over 25 years, never had a flat tyre…. And if I’m going on a long trip, I’ll just take a spare tyre, it’s not hard. Don’t see what’s the fuss is all about.
The "sponge" brake feel is because it will cycle all levels of regen braking before actually applying the physical brakes. It's fine if you keep this in mind. If you want to regen some before real breaking apply the bakes lightly and slowly increase pressure until you need the real brake power. It is actually a feature.
This is excellent as I did have a wtf moment thinking we needed to thumb the paddles to control this on the fly to dial in a regen level (a real hassle and prone to inneficiencies) when say coasting down a hill. Having the brake cycle through the regen as a feature is truly excellent and we can leave the regen on by default to level 2 on normal driving. You can still manually change it when you know the road and are say wanting to coast like on the highway to minimise motion loss as it takes more electricity to get up to speed than it does recuperating via regen.
@@argent10k Definitely a learning curve but it has been a fun learning curve for me.
@@fireinside1984 I look forward to the meta when I receive mine in Dec :) If anyone has additional tips on driving for max efficiency, I'd love to be edumacated prior to taking ownership :D
This is the only PHEV I'd get because it tries to stay in EV + connects the motor the the front wheels on high way cruise rather than inefficiently burning what little battery remains after urban driving - smart, and good for towing.
Hi Matt.
Thanks for the review! has been watching your review since you launched the channel. you reviews are WELL STRUCTURED and very related to real people in the real world. keep up the great job mate!

In my family currently we have 3 Mitsubishi Lancers and 2 Outlanders. They have been great cars like any Mitsubishi. No hassles at all. My youngest daughter wants to upgrade to the new Triton in Feb next year after seeing it's release videos last week. My eldest daughter and her husband have decided on the new PHEV Outlander just not sure which model as yet. My wife wants the PHEV Eclipse and me well I'm sticking to my Lancer. Love That Car.

One of the great selling Hybrid cars
Great review, subscribed.
We have the exceed tourer version of this. I can confirm that the 20's do impact ride quality. It's certainly not bad by any means but can bump and crash a bit on poor road surfaces. We've cover 4500km now. It's been fantastic. We have the original 2014 version as well so knew what the car was all about. The range is certainly much improved and we use almost no fuel in our user scenario. Like you say, charge it every night. Its worth adding that on a lease the car is actually incredibly good value. The tax savings over a 5 year lease amount to over $40k thanks to the new exemption effectively making this car quite cheap! The interior on tourer grade is genuinely luxurious and very high quality, what a contrast to the ES.
Thanks for the comment and the great feedback.
Yep, it does make a whole heap more sense to lease rather than buy - the incentives are great.

The car is pretty good and while the initial price might be a bit high, you will start saving as soon as you drive. It's basically an EV with a small range and a generator on board for longer trips.
The quality is pretty good, as well as the sound insulation, and while the ES might be a bit on the cheap side inside, the ASPIRE or equivalent versions in other parts of the world are a pretty good choice for their price.
Nice review. I've recently ordered the Exceed PHEV (around 12 months or so wait) and discovered that Roadside Assist is NOT included with the PHEV. Pretty slack considering the price.
Good video
"Super - All Wheel Control For off road adventures" according to Mitsubishi promo. A can of goo should bring peace of mind during those "off-road" adventures. Like the vehicle, but for me, out of consideration for regional ownership or more remote travel. Like your work Matt, well done with your channel.
Outstanding SUV
The aspire is beautiful. That one I will buy. Next year in Holland
Nice review, I am currently cross shopping Aspire Phev with Ford Escape STLine Phev.
I would buy the Mitsubishi. Better car. Better backup - more PHEVs sold by the brand and they are going to continue selling Outlanders for years. Ford has axed Escape and I wouldn’t want you to be seriously inconvenienced by that.
@@therightcar - that's not to say that ford will no support you, they will as they are obligated to under warranty and ACL.
the 2.5L i4 atkinson cycle petrol, engine is actually from Mazda whicle the tech they use for hrbrid/Plug is is from Toyota, the CVT is a Ford design based on Toyota CVT.
The issue with the escape ST-Line PHEV that Ford are moving away from this preferred method in the mid size SUV market, what they replace with? I keep hearing that the Exploer EV (which is Edge/Endura size) is coming here (re: its the VW ev that Ford have access to)
@@therightcar I agree that Outlander is a better car in general. Although , Escape PHEV has got some solid pros:
1. Much cheaper then Aspire even without any haggling (for Mitsu you pay a full RRP)
2. Availability ( Mitsu dealer quoted 12 month waiting).
3. Escape has a spare tyre (spacesaver though).
4. Better driver assistance system ( You have to buy Outlander Exceed to get Mi-Pilot).
5. Better sound system with subwoofer.
I have also decided to test drive Tesla Y, it now costs approximately the same as Aspire.

Matt, I can make a case for PHEV tech in terms of metro start-stop traffic and that the owner recharges over night, that said if you do extended highway driving it makes very little sense as the engine in Atkinson cycle without the assistance of forced induction (rE: to make it a Miller Cycle) would be working hard unless there was enough reserve in the battery to use the electric motor, a bit like Hybrid mode is on Toyota, I know many Rav 4 owners that B&M about why their Rav 4 consumes as much as my turbo petrol does at highway speeds.
Is it a dead end tech? again I can make a case for it as a city car option re: only used at highway speeds at extended periods maybe 5 times a year.
as for the Outlander, its a nice X-Trail clone.
The ICE in Mitsi phev technology works as a generator, It does not transfer power to the driveline with a front transmission like other phev or hybrid. So, having a force induction engine will not increase its performance nor efficiency. Rather, it will becomes less reliable in the long run.
@@davidyang577 Actually, it can drive the wheels due to it having a clutch pack that connects when needed but only at higher speeds as the engine has to come up to speed and match the electric motors. It is debatable though whether forced induction would be any benefit as the majority of the time, the ICE will come on at low RPM which is far out of it's 'efficient' range of RPM whereas forced induction requires the engine to run at a certain RPM to be effective.
For those towing caravan or camper you have access to 20kwh of ac power. Enough run AC for few nights after which just run engine on to recharge.
Great point!
Great😮😮
White colour 😍 ✨️ 💕
Mitsubishi great car
I've watched easily 20 reviews of this car and no one has covered this yet: in Charge mode, I understand it takes ~90 mins to charge the battery from zero. Question is, how much extra gas does that use? I've only seen one test of this and the guy didn't really mention other than saying the fuel gauge hadn't moved. But it's a great feature for when you're on the highway for a while, say you're going to a city 2 hours away, you could go as far as the battery would take you (or say, down to 10 % battery left) and then use the trip to charge the battery, so you're full when you get to where you're going, and can then tool around town on EV mode only. I'd be interested to know how much more fuel gets used (vs Normal mode) and how it would affect the sort of overall cost per km. Obviously this isn't something you're gonna do a lot but it's nice for the odd time when you do take a short trip, so you don't have to worry about tracking down a charging station immediately after arriving.
Charge mode uses around 9L-10/100km.
The Mitsi Phev technology is based on an ice generator. So technically, it's always on charge when full power is needed.
Best way to use charge mode is over 90kph.
At that speed the engine engages the front wheels directly and drives the car while also charging the battery with any surplus energy.
@@paulblackwood3960 you're right on the money 👍

@@paulblackwood3960 👍
Hi there. Sorry if this has been asked already but how much do you estimate it costs to charge it per day?
Thanks for your question. It’s a 20kWh battery, so - based on an average energy rate of $0.357 per kWh, you’re looking at $7.14 to charge it.
@@therightcarthanks for the quick reply! So that's $7.14 for say 84km of range if I recall correctly.
That's a cost of $8.50 per 100km.
At $1.65 per litre of petrol, that's equivalent to 5.15 litres per 100km.
If my calculations correct, that's about the same as using petrol only.
Sounds like good maths to me.
But the premise for a new-energy vehicle like this is more realistically approached when considering that a buyer will in all likelihood have a solar array, so, electricity may not cost them a cent.
@@therightcarI am renting and don't have a solar array but I can see the alure! Thanks for the answers!
@@SuperCharlesPeter Technically though, if you are comparing those numbers vs the equivalent petrol model, it's about $4 more (based on Mitsubishi's advertised numbers) for that same 100km.
Good car❤❤
It's a bit stingy of Mitsubishi not to offer the base PHEV versions at LS patrol trim indeed of ES trim at a drive away price of over AUD$60K.
This has the perfect hybrid system. The inability to recharge the battery while driving on petrol, as is lacking on the MG HS PHEV, is astoundingly stupid.
👍 good
Thank you! Cheers!

Hmm. Why do they only advertise a 61 km range in Canada and 38 miles in the US? 🤔
Possibly because they take into account much MUCH colder weather ie snow in the US and Canada compared to say Australia. Cynical reason could be that Mitsubishi NA has been pinged numerous times about outlandish marketing claims etc.
👏👏
This car put PHEV's on the map for good reason, its one of the best plug ins you can get. Only problem is that it(and always has been) very expensive but its been made worse by, the Alliance(thanks Nissan).
If you do less than 80km for your daily commute then you will not see a petrol station unless you need to grab a Snickers on the way home or something. If you run this car as intended its that good.
Significant government rebates make leasing the PHEV cheaper than the petrol
Correct. I don’t mention them because these incentives can be fleeting, pardon the pun.
@@therightcar 😂
Hang on a second, for an extra $4000 you can get a Tesla Model Y in NSW.
I just don’t understand why you would go for this over something like the Model Y?
Servicing and running costs on the Tesla would be drastically lower too.
Model Y = 2WD, Outlander PHEV = S-AWC means you can off road with the Outlander. Model Y AWD is over $90K.
@@maverick_akl1824 well done buddy
It seems to be a well equipped SUV, there's no denying that and so it should for the money you're forking out, it's just a shame the interior looks so dreary and the exterior screams "I'm the local council's runabout bus!" The efficiency of the Outlander PHEV is impressive, which is a major positive for this SUV, but for the money you're handing over, I would expect a more polished look on the outside.
Not me, it is BEAUTIFUL both outside and inside AND I WILL BUY A FULLY LOADED 2023 OUTLANDER PHEV ANYWAY!

@@therightcar hahaha.....great comeback!
Way too expensive, should wait for more manufacturers to introduce PHEV's to Australia. Also, the service costs are astronomical. Lexus PHEV would be a better option although a bit pricy

@@SL-cp8bi But for me, it's the opposite because I will buy a fully loaded 2023 Outlander PHEV Exceed Tourer.
I mean how often in your life have you ever actually needed one? Especially on a vehicle that's meant to be mostly driven in the city, or on small jaunts on the weekend. Not to mention the roadside assistance that comes with it, and the flat fix kit. I can't imagine you'd be stranded very long unless you took this thing somewhere very remote, which is not really what it's designed for.
yeah ive needed to use a spare once in 24 years of driving
Model Y is also about 4.7M long but a little less spaces than Outlander booth since is a coupe. Come with panoramic roof, 360 camera views and self sensor record if something approaching to your car. Speed obviously faster than outlander PHEV and is a full EV battery car. And the price tag as of today drive away is about $71K AUD. So outlander is way too expensives. As much i love outlander overall look, size, infortainment over Model Y. But the price tag for outlander is too much for me to considered.
It could be priced so high because of big government tax incentives for Australians for PHEVs. That means that, rather than like $70k, you might actually end up paying something like $40k over a period of a few years because of the incentives.
@@therightcar So in 5 years overall total. Which car cost more expenses? Model Y or Outlander PHEV? included services, insurances, fuels, electricity power etc? Or is there any big gap different? Would you considered Outlander Exceed PHEV or MOdel Y?
The outlander phev has a very capable AWD system with the convenience of petrol for time when you have nowhere to charge your car.
As for EV and Phev, they both have their advantages, but as far as AWD and light off-road capability goes, the Outlander phev is by far more superior. Good for taking the family to the snow during ski season or spirited outback driving.
@@davidyang577 still way too expensives. you might as well get an Outlander Diesel instead or 2.0L turbo. Without the PHEV u saved over $15K+ money. So why would I wanna spent another over $15K+? The whole reason why people wanna buy PHEV are for saving money on fuel economy isn't it? So whats the point of getting a PHEV over priced? Just stick to the ICE mate. save you more money. PHEV still have to do regular services like the normal ICE cars too. And insurance cost even more for adding PHEV and damn Victoria charging taxes per km for an EV and Hybrid the very first town in the damn whole world thinking of charging extra taxes on greens car per km! Thought America is so fked up. Guess Melbourne is the next one up.
@dann5515 How efficient is this car depending on the requirements of the owner.
You get nice rebate as these are still considered as an EV.
For someone who generally uses to drop kids off, goes to work, and does errands nearby most days, it becomes only having to put 70 bucks of fuel every 2 months or 2000km.
The ride quality and quietness are obviously also better than a diesel.
The maintenance of the diesel engine is generally higher as you have EGR, DPF, Turbo, transmission, mounts, rear diff oil, leaky injectors, etc, to worry about also.
So no, I personally wouldn't compare the two.
Not to mention, in NZ we pay 2.30L for diesel and we RUC which is 74 bucks for every thousand km we travel.
I use my diesel vehicle as a work horse or towing my water craft, but I'll drive my new Gen Outlander phev on days that I don't have to put up with my noisy and smoky work vehicle.
The new gen outlander phev also drives way more confident with much better road handling, snow, slippery condition, and better power delivery to my diesel ute and wagon.

Too small. Should be at least Pathfinder size.
Why? Pathfinder is HUGE.
I've considered all the pros and cons and financially for most, you are better off with a petrol only car at this point in time anyway. You buy an EV or Hybrid only because you want to and want to enjoy a different drive, not for any other reason. And please don't give me all that emissions garbage. What is created in the atmosphere to enable charging the car? You'll find that these cars will be worthless when it comes time to replace the batteries. I have a home with solar and a tesla battery, so don't come back with an argument that I don't know what I'm talking about. The wind farms are just a big political con job and watch out when a big hail storm comes through and wipes out a solar farm, like it did so recently in the USA. My wife loves her ASX exceed, Its a Bishi....Great cars.
. I don’t get these EV and plug in hybrids, all that extra money for a basic car. Comparing the 62,990 version with a Honda CRV Vtx-i @ a cost of 41,990 drive away, there isn’t any reason to buy the mitsubishi. Doing a comparison on fuel alone, the CRV uses 9L per 100klms. Over 15000klm per year this is 1350L of fuel. A cost per year paying 1.80 per litre of fuel is $2,430. The Mitsubishi uses 4l per 100 (based on your drive more than 100klms when the battery depletes) is 600L per year for 15,000klms. That’s $1,080 on fuel per year. On this equation, it will take 14 years to make up the $20,000 difference in price. Don’t know who would keep that car 14 years to break even. Not to mention the home electricity charging costs. Until these cars on on par with petrol priced cars, its a waste of money.
Enjoying your channel too👍
There’s better driving dynamics and power bands with hybrids and EVs. On pure calculations alone, you are correct.
Thanks mate. There are big tax incentives on PHEVs though, so it does make a bit of sense for the finance savvy.
It is a fact that yes the electrified version is more expensive the non electrified version and you pay for that in your cost of ownership. However where this Outlander beats the competition, if you live in or near the city and commute to work and other dailies and you do less than 80k's a day then you wont touch your fuel tank until you go out of town(providing you charge the thing), you get to that break even point a bit quicker than in other PHEV's especially if youre coming from a similar class of car.
@@mindfreeze0838 You make a good point. I own the RAV4 hybrid myself. But yes, if your daily journeys don’t exceed the mileage you say, the Outlander is a very practical vehicle to own.
so why buy a Tiguan R-Line when the regular Tiguan is cheaper? I'm paying extra for the 185kW, 450Nm of torque, S-AWC and off roading capabilities. It just happens to be fuel efficient, this was down the list of priority when I bought the Outlander PHEV.
Due to the designers having their way with the gangsta look, the bonnet is too high and roof line too low. Forward visibility is awful. Short windscreen, long high bonnet and thick A pillars. It’s brother from another mother X trail has far superior visibility and much safer for city driving.
Fair enough. I didn’t find it that bad.
The equivalent Xtrail eForce hybrid is also far more fuel hungry not to mention Nissan has been on a massive downward slide in aftersale customer support for a long time now.
