How gorgeous . Heard this for the first time at a folk concert at a local community center and didn’t catch the title and my friend noticed me googling : “ elvis I love you tattooed on her breast .” In the spirit of May’s Mental Health Month, I’ll add that this is deeply beautiful , respectful, even accurate depiction of what certainly appears to be delusional and manic behavior

Once again, it was my big brother who turned me on to Richard Thompson, and especially this song. My brother has been gone almost five years, but not a day goes by when I'm not reminded of a musical gem he showed me. I miss you Hugh B., my big brother. And thank you, hclee, for posting thisQ

What makes Richard special is that he is a very humble man, unimpressed with his own artistic brilliance. I say this as someone who knows him personally from attending his camp in the Catskills, "Frets & Refrains." Were he to commentate on this video he would no doubt critique what he considered to be subpar in this particular performance. The man has very high standards and impeccable taste.

I had the pleasure of chatting with him briefly some years back after a Paris concert. A truly down to earth gent. I often think the reason he's never got the fee he's always been due is he never really wanted it like so many other musicians. Have you seen the documentary on youtube, A Solitary Life?

Last saw RT at Snape Maltings September 2012. Guy in front of us asked if he was any good!!! Had never seen RT perform but after about 4 songs he turned round and asked "is that just a normal steel strung guitar?" and was one of the first to his feet at the standing ovation before the encores. This man touches everyone who hears him, even my daughter who despises my music on principle. She affects to hate his music but has sung "Dimming Of The Day" on stage with me.

He embodies each song he sings fully, his guitar an appendage of his soul...he is folk rocks grand genius! He does not have an ounce of convention in his music. He is the pure arts-man. RT is the worlds best kept secret...the jewel of contemporary folk...yes he is the King of his genre. I've seen him once in Tampa is a small theater inYbor City, in 1997 or 1998. Every gig is a wonderful experience and even if you don't know a particular song you are immediately drawn into it through the quality of the song-writing. This was in his Ulster Hall set two nights ago. Singing and playing solo with an intensity that was even for him remarkable. The guitar playing is taken for granted genius but I was never quite sure about the vocals - I am now - a man possessed in Belfast - 3 standing ovations more than deserved - consider myself privileged.

Oh she dressed in the dark
    And she whispered amen
    She was pretty in pink
    Like a young girl again
    Twenty years married
    And she never thought twice
    She sneaked out the door
    And walked into the night
    And silver wings carried her
    Over the sea
From the west coast of Ireland
    To West Tennessee
    To be with her sweetheart,
    Oh she left everything
From Galway to Graceland to be with the king
    She was humming Suspicion,
That's the song she liked best
She had Elvis I Love You
    Tattooed on her breast
    When they landed in Memphis,
Well, her heart beat so fast
    She'd dreamed for so long,
Now she'd see him at last
She was down by his graveside
    Day after day
    Come closing time they
    Would pull her away
Ah to be with her sweetheart,
    Oh she'd left everything
From Galway to Graceland to be with the king
Ah, they came in their thousands
    From the whole human race
    To pay their respects
    At his last resting place
    But blindly she knelt there
And she told him her dreams
And she thought that he answered
    Or that's how it seems
    Then they dragged her away
    It was handcuffs this time
She said "my good man are you out of your mind?"
Don't you know that we're married?
    See, I'm wearing his ring.
From Galway to Graceland to be with the king.
I come From Galway to Graceland to be with the king.

Mmm Richard Freethey. For the uninitiated it would appear from the wording of your comment that RT is Irish. He is English (Notting Hill, London) but his dad is a Scot and enjoyed the Scottish tradition's inc music. Hence plenty of Celtic influences in RT's music, but Irish, good Lord no!! I have been in the fortunate position of following RT since almost the beginning of his musical career, 1968 when I saw Fairport's at The Royal Festival Hall. I walked away from that Contemporary Music Festival a changed teenager. Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson were to be with me musically from then 'til now and I struggle to find any musician of a similar ilk that comes close to RT's storytelling and gloriously stunning guitar style :)

    • @moseslivessc
      @moseslivessc 7 років тому +2

This comment is fascinating in that it is great, but leaves me almost dead with envy... i am only 30, so a lot of his music happened before my time, but in the 20 years that i have been playing music he is yet to be topped overall... it must have been incredible to see him, especially in the FC years full of energy.. Genuinely think him and danny thompson are the best band ever haha no drummer needed ;) anyway, thanks for the anecdote :)

      Rich,
I did not know of your love of Richard Thompson's work. I've been a fan since I saw him with Fairport Convention at the Fillmore East. In my admittedly biased opinion, he is arguably the most technically brilliant and melodically creative guitarist in pop music. I never miss a chance to see/hear him; fortunately he includes DC on his tours.

Artistic license, found in many of Richard's songs: such as the "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" motorcycle where the dying outlaw "reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys" ---- when in actuality the Vincent didn't have key ignition and required a kickstart. In "Tearstained Letter" he originally sang "I just don't like this affinity" but now he often sings it as " I just don't like what you're doing to me". He wrote them, and therefore can sing 'em as he likes! And the Elvis song in question was of course "Suspicious Minds" and not "suspicion"......

Oh, "Irishaware...", this is nonsense. While Mr. Keane's version is indeed a fine one, the number of non-Irish holding All-Ireland championship medals in Irish Traditional Music, dance and song belies your contention, which sounds vaguely racist to me and not at all an Irish perspective. RT has sounded pretty much like this his whole career, even when speaking --he's a very genuine individual (who's acquaintance I have made, so I speak first hand). And if you think this is a stage-Irish accent, you haven't spent a) much time around the various accents of the Republic or the Six Counties, nor b) much time around vaudevillians. Also, and to me most importantly, you contend that the melody is "older Irish". Please Be Specific -- I've been playing Irish music for 40 years and I can't say that I can recall this melody from anywhere else, not can I find any reference to any earlier melody anywhere in the literature. You could very well be right...please disabuse me of any notions of originality I may be harbouring here, if you can. Otherwise, let's not shoot from the hip, eh?

Written by an Englishman who is known throughout the world including it would appear Syria and going by the number of covers of this song by the Irish, quite a few fans in Ireland also. Not sure how you conclude that RT's comment about it being an Irish Elvis song equates to subtle racism against the Irish. RT's father was a Scot and a good amount of his work is influenced by Celtic music. Just listen to the album Strict Tempo. Being a Scot myself, I feel more inclined to think it is you who may have an issue with the English and not the other way round. Stay safe.
