- A film of our putting the very first test fire in this rather lovely brand new loco. Built over a period of nearly 30 years by Bob Butler, this rather awesome 7 1/4” gauge Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway Hudswell Clarke 4-8-0 will hopefully become the flagship of our running steam fleet at High Legh Miniature Railway.

Incredible amount of work to make such a machine, EVERY PART MADE BY IT,S OWNER by hand or milled from a solid blank, thousands and thousands of hours!!!!!!!!!!!

Always thought this would be a great loco to build . The full sized ones were the largest tender locomotives to operate on the Irish Narrow gauge system. Congratulations on a wonderful build ,and bringing one back to life again!!

Wonderful nice to see someone build something different other than the usual standard gauge. Looks like excellent workmanship just one thing, you may know this but the chopper hook was on upside down.

Many of our models are built over a great many years by hobbyist model engineers. They are complete works of art that can also be fired and run. 🙂

Lovely engine. Is that soft dry Welsh steam coal you are using?
More or less, it’s Welsh Anthracite small nuts,….. and welsh steam coal is also an anthracite.
@@TheSteamWorkshop cool im with you so you basically mix the harder anthracite Welsh coal with the softer long flame Welsh coal?
A question: In the firebox one could see some not tightened nuts. What are they for? Anyhow for what are nuts there?

Is this a kit that one can purchase as "buy as you build"?
Sadly not. This is a unique scratch built one off. We would consider producing it as a kit, we have all the patterns to make castings, but it certainly wouldn’t be a cheep thing to do.
@tacfoley I fear it would cost significantly more than that these days. Possibly as little as £20,000 for the boiler, castings and raw materials for the build, and then a full time professional model engineers wage for around 2 years,….. if all goes well. I reckon £100,000 minimum, and even that would almost certainly be too tight for us to be able to be confident about making a profit. I think at £150,000, we’d feel confident enough that there was enough money available to buy enough time to ensure that we could do a good enough job, comparable to this loco. 🙂

I'm sure if the builder knew how much he spent he'd probably jump off a bridge and if his spouse found out, he wouldn't have to jump!
