LiftMaster 8500W vs Genie 6170 - King of the Wall Mount Garage Door Motors?

  • This video has been a year in the making. Why? Because a year ago Genie finally introduced their wall mount garage door motors, the 6070 and 6170. And in the past year I have installed several of these motors. But how does it stack up to the LiftMaster 8500W? Does the Genie 6170 offer a better experiencer? Which motor do I pick as King of the Wall Mount Garage Door Motors? If you want to find out that answer you gotta stay till the end of the video.

    On the 6170 Genie Opener, you CAN add 2 more LED lights for a total of 3 lights. The video mentioned adding more lights was NOT possible, but it is. Thank you for the great video!

    Thanks for this video! Based on this I went with a Genie 6172H opener when my old LiftMaster belt drive unit failed. I was able to install it myself which not only saved me a lot of money but also gave me a lot of satisfaction. It has been problem free for just over a year now. I absolutely love how quiet it is. Then I got obsessed with making my garage door even more quiet. I installed DURA-LIFT Ultra-Life MAX rollers, roller sleeves, Green Hinge System hinges and new vertical track (because previous garage door techs had bent it all up when removing rollers). Now it is super quiet. There are lots of UA-cam videos on how to make your door quieter. Also Aladdin Connect now works with Amazon Key.

    We recently had a detached garage built with a 18X7 garage door and the dealer-installed a Genie 6170HB. We think it's the best thing since ice tea. The only thing is we don't have electricity in the garage yet. With the help of an extension cord, we have been able to use it while doing the interior. Can't wait until it is finished so we use all the features. Great video

    Great video, very helpful as I try to decide which new opener to purchase. I was leaning toward a Chamberlain RJ070, which is similar to the Liftmaster, mainly because I liked some of the design and install features. I had read the Genie is not as clean installing the wiring to the unit and the battery backup door is a pain to remove. However, Ive had two Genies in my garage for nearly 28 years and both have been flawless, never any trouble, until recently when one started having issues. I preferred getting a wall mount and your video helped me decide to stick with Genie - Thanks! Now if I can only find one in stock!

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  2 роки тому +1

      Hello! I'm glad the video helped. I think you will find the Genie new battery backup setup much easier. Unlike the LiftMaster/Chamberlain these motors do not require the battery backup to give you the 24V power output. Now, I have yet to confirm with Genie but the model 6172 is the retail version and if I am not mistaken that model only offers an 18V power output. Again, Genie has to confirm that but they did make a distinction with their proline wall mount garage door vs their retail motor. Hope this helps!

    One thing that would be nice to mention in your videos for the nerds is whether these motors support connecting a relay to operate. There are a significant number of people who try to steer away from cloud services. One way to do that is to connect something like a zooz zen16 up to the opener and a door reed switch. As far as I'm aware, I can't do this with modern liftmaster/chamberlain products but can with the genie.

    • @bitterrotten
      @bitterrotten Рік тому +1

      I got impatient and installed the 6170. The answer is yes; it can be triggered with a relay. There are also inputs for open, close, and stop relays but there doesn't seem to be any springs to hold wires in the sockets and the instructions don't mention it at all so not sure what that's about.

      Amen to that. The problem with genie where do I start Genie used to have name brand recognition when you thought of a genie you thought of a garage door opener I mean it was like Google how much better can you have it then that.. that said genie was bought and sold and then bought and sold and then bought and sold again all through the 90s and each time a new company or new ownership came in there they did something to save a nickel and Genie went from having absolute Total name brand recognition to being crap and being the worst garage door openers out there I wouldn't put them in if you paid me. I used to have on my truck I had a full box just of genie parts cuz all we installed were the genie screwdrives the 8600 the 7600 and a stealth once in a while. That was all we put in I had a whole box full of circuit boards receivers carriages, reluctors capacitors two different sizes, that little coupler to attach the head unit to the rail you name the genie part I had them in there cuz they all went bad. Being the installer I had to warranty all of it. I got sick of working for free and working for genie so I switched to LiftMaster. I've had no problem since I mean I can tell you like I got a handful of problems over the years with any of the LiftMaster products they just work if you put them in right they work. Now I've got a free box empty of all those Genie partts. Don't get me wrong I still carry some for the occasional customer who has a genie already in there before I get there. .. that said Genie has left a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to Genie. I've installed an opener here and there through the years since I made the switch to LiftMaster and I have not been impressed at all they are garbage they're always playing catch up with LiftMaster and now they're just they're not going to get my vote not at this point in time. I don't see that changing. LiftMaster would have to mess up something big they have to go downhill fast for me to ever make the switch back to Genie.. that's just my two cents.

  • @TommyBaldwin652
    @TommyBaldwin652 2 роки тому +1

    Well once again good video One thing I don't know if you know it on the 8500W. The W denotes the Wi-Fi capabilities of the opener That said. If you don't install the light then the MyQ will not work. At least the closing of the door through your phone won't work. The reason being. Whrn to You use my q to close the The lights will flash and there's an alarm that will sound for 10 seconds before the door starts to close so without the light it can't flash the lights so it's not going to close the door. In theory you could be in Hong Kong and your phone's in your pocket and say the app opens up and you close the door like a butt dial but you put close your door right well someone could be standing there not realize it in the door can start closing on them so the lights flash the alarm sounds alert anybody in the garage that the door is about to start doing something. So if you got a lazy installer out there not installing the light on a 8500 it's going to turn around bite you in the butt especially if the customer wants their MyQ app to work. Something most people don't know is that if you have my view it works with Amazon prime when they can open your door put your package in your garage take a picture of it then they close your door. You don't want to leave your packages on your porch anymore where they're going to get stolen I think that's a great feature from Mike you and it's free.. Second thing is I've installed hundreds if not a thousand of the 3800 and 8500 residential jackshafts in my time and I've had only one problem with the lock other than that I've had no problems with those openers whatsoever. I haven't tried the genie one I think I saw it a Wayne Dalton DC once. So I have nothing bad to say about the genie version. However the LiftMaster is top notch opener. Once again good video very informative..

    I do not have experience with the Genie or their customer support. I have a Liftmaster 8500 and it has been mostly good for eight years. The 888LM wall Controller has issues and Liftmaster offers a free replacement; good luck with that. If you can get a code for the replacement, it is difficult to sign up for an account. Once you get an account the code you were given is rejected as invalid at checkout. Phone support is automated and just refers you to a local dealer for assistance; which is something they cannot help you with. If you need customer support good luck.

    Liftmaster now has the 98022 model without the cable tension monitor. I believe this unit will really dominate the jackshaft industry, mainly because they don’t have that safe-t-pulse stutter that the genies have, and are much quieter overall.

      Hello! Thank you for the feedback. And to answer your question yes it should work on a 12x10 tall door, insulated. It's rated to lift an 800 lb door, but it will only lift up to 180 square feet of door space. Thus if you had an 18 wide door by 10 tall that would be the maximum. Hello genie company, If you are the real genie company, I have comments to make.
      I have genie excellerator garage door opener for 20 years. I am very happy. None of my neighbors have it and hence I can compare the few important advantages I had over them.
      1 fast open: rushing to work or anywhere, the twice opening speed is just right. I never had to wait in pressure even though the wait may have been 5-8 secs.
      2. Intellicode: all the neighbors have seen their garage doors often open for no reason, hence worried. Mine never opened without my wish. There are more things I noticed in my favor but I will not describe here due to text length.
      3. The life is better. Neighbors had to replace theirs' multiple times during this 20 years time frame. I don't have to replace even now, but I am, to make more space in middle top and hence more light illumination with less bulbs. (I have to use three bulbs in all directions to overcome the shadow of the current install.)

    Which one is quieter? My old LiftMaster got a lot louder during the "braking" period before reaching its full open and closed states....and that was annoying as hell. Does the 8500W do the same (Noise increases at the end of travel)?

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you for the great question. The Genie 6170 is still fairly new. But I can say with the confidence that the Genie is slightly quieter. Now, one variable that needs to be taken into consideration is the balance of the garage door. If the balance is off (heavy or too lite) then that can affect the motor usage which can add wear and tear causing it to become noisier. I hope this helps.

    Just got through uninstalling the Genie 6172H and boxed it up for a trip back to Amazon. I followed the install instructions to a T, and it just seemed flaky. Several times it refused to go down and then I had to clear settings and redo them. Also, the opener is very fussy about the status of the overhead bluetooth light and will just quit working if the light isn't communicating and you get a lovely "door disabled" message. I really wasn't bothered by the big shudder on door closing, but the real deal breaker was something most people aren't even talking about. The transformer hums constantly and it's loud enough to be annoying if you're sensitive to those type noises. I don't mean while it's operating, I mean 24/7 😑 The app seemed ok, but one thing I didn't care much for is that once you "request" an open/close, it really took its sweet time making it happen. The final straws came when the auto door lock quit working after just a few days. Next, we happened to lose power soon after and the backup battery couldn't even move the door 12".
    Up went the Liftmaster 8500w and what a difference. Having installed both within days of each other, I just liked the LM8500 much better. Both seem about the same in motor sound and speed but that's where it ends. The LM behaved predictably during the entire setup and I didn't have any trouble getting the cable tensioner switch installed/working. The Safe-T-Beam sensors on the LM are about 1/3 the size and are less likely to get kicked/hit. More room inside the unit to route wires, the battery can be changed with a single screw and its charge status shows up on the door button LCD. The app is easier to navigate and when you select open/close the door operates immediately. Lastly, the LM8500 is dead quiet when it's at rest 🙃

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Рік тому +1

      Hello! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. That point about the "humming transformer" is not just a wall mount issue but it's something I have seen, actually heard on a number of Genie motors. I believe that hum from the transformer is a setting to how Genie regulates the variable speed to their DC motors. Most homeowners are not bothered by it. Yet I do hope they can fine tune it so that it's not as prevalent. Now on my end the app experience is getting better. I do feel MyQ from LM has more robust services. But Genie is not too far behind.
      As I have gone on record saying, as a dealer installer the Genie motor is my preferred wall mount motor. Yet the 8500W has dominated the wall space for some time now. And now that the updated 8500W will not require a cable tension monitor ... Well I might need to do an update video soon.

    I have read several reviews of wall mounted openers. The primary reason for using these is to deal with low overhead. I live in a community where most owners have a small golf cart garage. Installing an opener on these smaller overhead doors is not a problem unless you do not have the minimum depth between front and rear walls to accommodate the center rail of a typical opener. Depending on the depth you have, there are some openers that can be modified in order to make them work, but it cannot be done in many cases. Depth of garage, height of door opening and design of opener can be deal breakers. Isn't a wall mounted opener the perfect solution for this type of situation as long as you have a torsion bar system and adequate space on the side for the wall mount unit?

    How necessary are the locks? I’ve read a ton but never seen anyone try to open the garage without the locks from the outside or without disengaging the motor. My parents have the jackscrew with two large high lift doors that sit almost vertical when open. (Three story garage). They close a little fast. It feels sounds like a fall. Then slow as they get to the limit. I don’t think they have the tension roller sensor either. But I assume if it’s not possible to lift the door from the outside when closed that the springs are not balanced correctly or are not large enough right? And therefore if someone got caught under it when it’s going down and they didn’t trip the sensors because they stepped over them… they’d get hurt?

For example they might just offer the bare bones that comes what's inside the box and then add cost with additional remotes, keypads, etc. Or they might offer only the manufacture warranty and try to upsell you with an extended warranty. And because these motors are high end and high dollar, those extended warranties make sense sometimes. In addition, the industry is currently dealing with the inflation costs, thus the gap is much less when it comes to pricing of these two motors. At any rate I do advise to do your shopping. @@sosgds thanks for the info. Our garage door is right under the master bedroom so even a quiet overhead pull type opener sounds like a drag car starting in the garage from the bedroom. Original I like the more robust deadbolt of the liftmaster, I’m a little bias toward liftmaster, that and my father just put one in his garage, but ultimately I just want the quieter unit. I do think I like the external tension sensors, because if one goes bad you can just replace that part, if you have a software issue or motor sensor on the genie go bad, you have to replace the entire unit.

      I would have to admit that in the beginning MyQ was pretty buggy. But they have really made strides with their iterations and updates. @MattNis1 2 роки тому +2

    Wow that is super biased. There is no way the cable tension monitor can fail. It’s super super simple circuit open/close and it’s very heavy duty. The cable doesn’t regularly break where you will actually see this tension monitor close so I don’t see how you could possibly have seen it break unless it was installed very very loosely.
