It’s reassuring to know someone out there on the field fighting climate change for us. Much respected 💪 The hybrid might solve our problem in short term. But we also need to preserve the very little soil we have. To keep them sustainable for the future.
The fertilizers, production of the hybrid seeds and the pesticides it will use will likely cause a lot of pollution during rainfall seeping the chemicals into the soil and nearby water sources
If they can increase yield by 50% then that is an amazing achievement! But if we don't hear more news about this variety in the future, it will be because they didn't increase the yield (at least for the same input).

@@johnnymcblaze No it's not tall at all , it's like below average if look in all over manner, but it will be short if compare it to younger teen generation. According to new survey,Avg height of Indian men now is 5'8. ( Still short in Nordic country but quite ok in Asia and South American).
True. My grandfather told us before rice were taller when he was a teen. With the new varieties, it became shorter with higher yield. Unless there is an increase in overall yield in the new taller varieties, it will only cost farmers more for fertilizers and upkeep without added profits.
Not only that. China has quite small amount of cultivatable land compare to its population. Maximising farmland production had always been a task for hundreds years.
That’s what I’m genuinely concerned with. More water ,more fertilizer ,more time? Is it worth having the new variety in the end? Everything needs to be accounted for before all the praise for a taller variety. Is it truly going to be helpful in the end?
i see many complains. Their research, their harvest. Its up for them to share this variety. One thing for sure is, they successfully achieved their research goal.
@@michaeleyeisha2003 growing more traditional rice is going to take even more water, fertilizer, and time and more land. If you want to double your production, that means you have to double the land, double the fertilizer, double the water. But the hybrid, you may only need a little more water and fertilizer. And stalks can be reused as mulch. Hybrids are also natural 100% organic.
In my opinion, I do not like that the scientists made this. It’s not natural, yes it’s true that it will help the starving people but you must not force nature to do more.. I say that I’ll let it be natural, even though it produces a low amount.. Yet I hope that this will help feed the people
One thing for sure, its gonna be very hard for farmer, especially manual labor to harvest these. They need a bigger machinery to effectively harvest this efficiently and fast
I don't think they will plant this kind of seed on other than flat field. China is much more advance in agriculture when most of the monitoring work with Baidu GPS, drones etc.

@@brendon1689 this isnt even a real thing, no references to it any where in any chinese research journals even with that blokes name attached, most likely a very rudimentary variety that doesnt yield very well and the chinese propaganda machine having an easy one
Our paddy plants used to be higher..but smaller and shorter paddy plants is selected as, shorter plantation term, more paddy plants per same area (more yield), less waste & wind resistance.. the most important thing is more yield, then it will be relevant
This variety is designed for flood and saline prone areas thats why it is taller than hybrids for irrigated non stress environments. Planting it in high salinity field (EC 8-10 dS/m) would significantly reduce its plant height. As you can see in the video the variety lodged before it can be harvested thus significantly decreasing the harvest output and grain quality when milled. I am working at IRRI and has worked on developing varieties for salinity and problem soils. The video looks like a seed production plot in a research station.
Today the main goal is the yield and resistance to pests and diseases of the crop. Usually the dwarf varieties give more yield per acre and resistant to lodging.
How much water does it take though? Rice is very water intensive. If this needs more water it will defeat the purpose of growing it. Rice used to be originally taller. The reason short one is grown is because it requires less resources and gives similar yield.
How are they do mechanical harvesting if the dimensions are different. China already facing labour shortage as graduate are 10 million of 16 million cohort. Do we need to supersize the combine harvester front comb unit? 😳👮♂️
Increasing yields is only part of the equation… If the rice requires more intrants to grow, it’s heading in the wrong direction as we need to move away from fossil fuels agriculture. I’ll remain skeptic until we understand the side effects.
Its their harvest from their fruitful research anyway. You don't need to stress yourself, you dont need to be skeptic, they can solve it with their own
