get the urinal auto syphon unit. it's a real advanced syphon that will activate with even drops of water when it's high enough. I will go off even with 1 drop a second and even less! here's how it works. it's full of airlocks and chambers. there's a copper pipe that looks like a candy cane inside. when the water goes up it stops before going over because of the airlock. the water rises and pressure builds up in they syphon. the pressure pushes the water up the candy cane looking pipe which is a smaller syphon inside the main syphon. once the small syphon starts its starts draining a small bucket that fills which is like a delayed timer to let the water rise a little bit more. once it sucks in air water floods the syphon and the main syphon starts. I ordered one for myself and I had to open it up and check before using it. what a device! perfect for aquaponics! I love the idea how water goes over the syphon before starting and absolutely love how it starts even with just drops entering the tank.

Also what about adding clip on sinkers small ones a lil at a time to counter the siphon when it doesn't stop. The extra weight will pull the bell down harder.
what is the point of the syphoning? im new to aquaponics. do u want to keep an inch of water in the grow bed constantly with it flowing in a circle like that?
i am new to the aquaponics too. learning as i go. so the purpose of the siphon is to have a automatic fill and drain cycle. this will help with aeration and allow the roots to take up more oxygen. it also circulates the water better allowing for the filtered water to return to the tank to get more nutrients from the fish waste. and yes you want to keep some amount of water in the bottom for the plants. i have read an inch is a pretty normal amount to keep.
Anyone have any idea how big (how much water volume) an automatic bell siphon can handle. I have an irrigation application where this might be useful to regulate the frequency of the water flow, but it would have to allow a lot to run sprinklers. Thanks.
