  • Having a dog with behavior issues is incredibly stressful and frustrating. A certified dog behaviorist can do wonders, helping you understand why your dog is displaying problem behavior and showing you how to resolve them.
However, finding the RIGHT dog behaviorist can be tough. You want to find a certified dog behavior expert - not just any trainer, as many behavior issues require expertise from someone who has a deep understanding of canine cognition.
In this video, we talk about how to find a dog behaviorist near you through the use of certified dog behavior expert directories:
    Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist Directories:
    - American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (AVCB): www.dacvb.org/search/custom.a...
-American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior (AVSAB): avsab.org/directory/
    Certified Dog Behavior Expert Directories:
    - Animal Behavior Society (ABS): www.animalbehaviorsociety.org...
    - Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT): www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/cert...
    - International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC): m.iaabc.org/
We'll also explain red flags to watch out for when finding a behavior expert, and how to make sure you're getting advice from a real expert. The wrong advice could be detrimental!
    *Update*
I reached out to the IAABC for clarification regarding the "Associate Certified" certificate and here is their response:
Associate Certified is no longer offered as a stand-alone application. If a certified species applicant (CDBC, CCBC, CHBC) does not meet the minimum requirements for certification of 80% in each application section and for overall application, but does score at least 74% on all sections and overall, we currently award them the designation of Associate Certified.
So, basically, the Associate Certified title is simply for those who just fell a few points short of the requirements for the Certified Dog Behavior Consultant title.

I need this!! Thank you! 💕 I've had my dog for 12.5 wonderful years, and he had some puppy classes that were very damaging. In the last couple years, I have learned some very valuable things - some from your reactivity videos!! I've also learned some things I thought were behavior problems we're just personality things and regular dog social working-it-out social behavior and I'd love a behaviorist's take & advice but I'm worried about get bad advice - so I'm looking forward to seeing your tips! 😊

It's definitely easy to get bad advice, unfortunately. Best of luck with your darling senior!

Thank you for this video! Very helpful as I may need one. If anything, great advice for the future. Luckily we are by UC Davis which has a vet school.

one of my dogs has a very wierd habit. The best I can do to describe it is the action they go into when their mothers returns from the hunt, but it isnt exactly that either, She goes up to any and all dogs in what appears to be a very submisive stance and whinces around the face of the other dogs end up postrating herslef belly up infront of the dog, allot of face licking is involved besides crying. Some dogs basiccally ignore her but others find it irritating and they growl at her. This makes her go into overdrive which sometimes brings on a bite from the other. She is the instigator and the other dog is just saying get out of my face, but she doesnt, She does it allot many times a day. I have no idea how to stop this behavior or understand it and it has gotten her into trouble on many occassions. I was hoping she would grow out of it but she is nearing her 1 year of age with no signs of stopping. HELP !!!

Hmm that's tough! What you describe sounds like extreme appeasement, which would imply she is not entirely comfortable with the interaction. It might be worth consulting with a behavior consultant if you really want to get to the root of the issue. Otherwise, I'd simply suggest not letting her interact with strange dogs, as it seems to be stressing her out a lot. Maybe try exploring appropriate play partners (aka dogs you are already familiar with and know) that are on her energy level or match her play style.

@@K9ofMine Thank you for your response. She only interacts with my dogs (4 other) the two bitches she gets along with fine, the three play all day together. One of my male dogs is just too old to do anything about it and I actually think he enjoys her attention in small portions, but does get exasperated after awhile. My second male dog, who loves and gets along very well with the other two bitches cannot abide her, her growls to keep her away but the more he growls the more intense she postrates herself. If I call either of their names they come to me, He saying please get her off me and she just delighted I want to see her. But she goes back to this poor little dog many MANY times in a day and from gently telling her to get lost, he now is getting more agressive. I was hoping this would stop when she came into season but it didnt, I hoped that when she came into seasosn he would take an interest in her and forgive the behavior, yes but only for a very short period of time. No worries all my dogs are spayed except for her since I wait till after her first season to spay her. Now I am waiting a month after before I get her spayed. But I doubt this will help, althoguh I hope it will. It is too ingrained in her, exactly what I am trying to avoid. I took her from my friends home because her male dog became very aggressive with her behavior and bit her badly almost losing an eye. This did not stop her, just got her rehomed. Really do not want any of my dogs to get hurt and am desperately looking for a solution.

I can’t find any of these professionals within 100 miles. After $5k in training both in-home & boarding with virtually no improvement, what’s left?
    So disappointing.

I’m so sorry, that’s a really frustrating place to be in. You are probably feeling really exhausted! I would say with the energy you have left, your best bet is going to be working with a veterinary behaviorist or a certified dog behavior consultant. Some of these individuals do online consultations- I’d just start searching for IAABC folks and see who does online sessions. Or, if you can make the drive for a veterinary behaviorist, it could really be worth it, as meds can make a HUGE difference for many dogs.
I would just advise you to stay away from future board and trains. Unfortunately they are notorious for being pretty shady, often use techniques for quick results that don’t hold up or even do more damage in the long run. Good luck, I know how overwhelming and exhausting this all can be. You’re not alone!

Although I do think positive training works I don't agree that it is science based. The "science" that is cited by these institutions are surveys and other methods that are highly subjective. They don't cite any randomized controlled studies that are the standard for any scientific study.

Report people who are not following the code of ethics and requirements for the organization they are certified by. It has nothing to do with agreeing or not agreeing.
