      That’s great! The Mini would probably be my new go-to. I just recently traveled with it in my carry-on and so glad I did.
      Often with steady-solutions, they’re bulky and have a lot of parts. Here, it’s just the bag and strap. I replaced the strap on a duffle bag with a Focus Rat strap, just in case I wanted 2 options. All without taking up extra space.
      Let us know if you jump into a Mini and check out our discount code if ordering direct (great if you’re getting your steady bag personalized to your brand).

      So true! At home, they become as essential as Appleboxes by the multiple ways you can use them. Our cats love them too. Thanks for the comment!

      Hahaha, good point, thankfully the material is more inviting to sink into rather than scratch, can’t say the same for our vinyl couch though 😅.

      We’re just happy to share how useful these steady bags are. Until our feature, we hadn’t thought to use them, but once you start, it’s hard to imagine going back to without. Thanks for comment!

      @@wearehierophants Actually, I love shooting handheld, but it’s very tiring. Sometimes I have to shoot for 1-2 hours straight. Lately, I've been doing a lot of hybrid shooting (video and photos), and I find it most convenient to shoot handheld or increasingly use a monopod. However, the monopod doesn't give me the same freedom as handheld shooting. The camera saddle will be gamechanger for me.

      These will make a huge difference. We used them extensively on an indie feature, where even with 10-hour days, we'd finish with less fatigue.
      Before having a steady bag, I'd muscle through a very long day, of waist-level filming, and get used to it over time, but there's a better way. I've also gone the monopod route, but it could limit your sense of spontaneous creation.
      Here, the Rat Bag can swing to the side if I want to shoot without it or move around in a scene, and then slide back in when I need the stability.
      It's also nice to have a safe place to park your camera on; if I need a brain break or I need to work out the blocking of a shot, I'll take the bag off, rest the camera, and utilize that break for a stretch - like building in body-conscience time while planning the next setup.
      Since we've started using the Rat Bag, it's made us more aware of our body and operating habits, which then becomes an opportunity to optimize our days with energy to spare.
      Last thing, depending on your rig size, we'd recommend the Mini or Medium/Essential (similar size), as the Large is ideal for heavy rigs (20-30 lbs).

    Hi, wonderful film, thanks for your insights. Wondering, though, what bag you'd recommend for me, principally shooting with BMPCC 6K Pro, and minimal rig. Just a cage, shotgun mic, and handles. I'm a small person, and feel that working handheld is quite a physical challenge for me, so I think one of these bags could make a difference. Thanks again!

    • @wearehierophants
      @wearehierophants  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you! We'd recommend the Mini Rat Bag. It's the perfect size to carry spare batteries and filters in the pockets and makes handheld a breeze since the bag distributes the weight. They're indispensable for how we work, and the Mini is a good size match for your BMPCC 6K Pro, even with the grip. Check the video and description for a discount code if you order directly from Focus Rat.

    Very creative uses of the bag and adding a nicer strap to the Essential makes it more appealing, but I do not see straps for sale on their website or B&H.

    • @wearehierophants
      @wearehierophants  5 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! We’ll reach out to Focus Rat about offering extra straps, but if in a pinch, there a few options for shoulder straps and pads online.
      You’ll just want to look for an adjustable 50mm / 2 inch strap with metal fasteners.
      Hope that helps in the meantime and we’ll post back if we hear anything about an official strap option.

    I got the large but sometimes it is overkill. The essential with the padded strap might be better for me.

      @wearehierophants  5 місяців тому

      That’s a good point, and also why we feel fortunate to share more use cases for all the steady bags Focus Rat creates.
      When we’re filming multiple cameras, we build a smaller rig and then a larger one with a zoom. Here’s the Mini, Medium and Essential are really helpful.
      Also of note, you can adjust the fill amount for all the Steady Bags, so the Essential can carry larger cameras. If you don’t need the pockets or are looking to add another support for lighter carry, then this a solid choice.
