How fun! Those are very healthy looking trees and will undoubtedly look beautiful as they are growing. Will definitely keep Jung Seed in mind next Spring for some of these beauties. Thanks Erin!
I planted two this spring also. I look forward to growing these columnar apple trees along with you. You could have planted in a 12" pot and then plant the 12" in your bigger pot
I have a few varieties of columnar apples and while they are too young to bear fruit, I love having them on my deck. They also came through winter better than my five in one grafted apple. I underplanted them with strawberries and they look great and are so healthy.
Erin, thank you for the continued inspiration. I planted two Fighting Temeraire Rose bushes under your auspices, and they are in full bloom now. Their open habit is unique and delightful. You never steer me wrong!
I have a peach tree in a container. It is loaded with peaches this year for the first time . I did have to remove a bunch for the health of the little peach tree 😂❤️😊
I added 3 bare root Columnar Apple trees last year. They suffered a bit of damage thanks to rabbits in the yard over winter. dangit! BUT I’ve protected them now and they’re leafing out like crazy! They are grafted so I protected that graphed area. Zone 4 🇨🇦.
Love the info. Jung Seed is sold out. Looked online and saw that they are also referred to as "Urban"(Gurney's) and "Limbless" (Home "Despot") apple trees. So interesting. Thanks Erin! Father's Day solved! Updated: Response from Jung Seed "Thank you for contacting us about columnar apple trees. We only get bare root plants in the very early spring. So, keep an eye out very early next year-January or February for them."
Great video and information. I am also zone 5b and also have an unheated garage and was wondering about over-wintering them. I would like to try the columnar apple tree, it would be perfect for my tiny city lot. Thank you!
Oh man!! I have been looking for columnar apple trees, and your video got me so excited. Went to the website to order....and all out of stock. :( But great info, thank you for sharing.
Really like those. Haven’t seen a columnar before. Any concerns about the graft in colder climates. I’m in eastern Washington zone 6. I lost a wheeping cherry this winter. Root stock is fine. Actually succeeding up from the bottom. It the grated top is dead. I expect it was the -7 degree night we had. Usually doesn’t get below 0 here anymore. Trees been in the ground for 4 years. Last summer it put in a lot of new growth so was looking forward to a beautiful show this springy. So disappointed. 😊
So excited to watch these grow. We planted (in containers) our first apple trees last year. We went with dwarf and semi-dwarf, Liberty and Snow Sweet and have a TON of blooms this year. I'll be happy if we get even one apple. Other than spraying, do you do anything for your Liberty Apple tree? I've heard about Kaolin Clay to protect them from insects and such, but we've never tried it.
I planted two columnar apple trees about 5 years ago. I loved them until this year when they started sending up suckers EVERYWHERE-not just near the tree but throughout my entire backyard. Sadly, it’s now time to take them out.
Can you speak to blight resistance on any colon at varieties of apple. After losing two trees to blight in the last 2 seasons I hesitate unless good disease resistance, although a columnar variety is super duper duper enticing :)
What do you look for, material etc, for frost free pots? I’m in zone 6, so concerned with pots cracking in winter freezing. Love the idea of small fruit trees on the patio
I put a link to these in the description but the perfect frostproof pot for me is a fiberglass/concrete mix, which is what these are (more fiberglass than concrete so they are fairly light). That way that look good too.
Hi, Impatient, I really enjoy your videos. I live in zone 4 (Ottawa, Canada) and wonder if the columnar apple trees would survive storage in an unheated garage over the winter. (A basement is also available). Thoughts from anyone are welcome!
They are hardy to zone 4 so I would think an unheated garage would give plenty of protection if you’re growing in containers. If they are in the ground they should be good to go with no special treatment.
I never knew any fruit trees could grow like this! That is amazing. I have a small backyard and this would be great for it. Thanks for the info. Also, I noticed the wood chip pile behind you last week and wondered if you would use it for mulch and I see this week, that some of it has been removed. Are you using it for mulch or am I way off base? Thanks!
That’s a tough job. Getting sufficient roots to make it survive will mean a very large root ball. If it has to move, then you have nothing to lose, but there’s a good chance it may not survive the move. If you do it, be sure to do it when it’s dormant and know that you’ll be sacrificing fruit for at least a year.
These aren’t unlike any other apple in regard to those things (other than the container growing advice I offer for winter in the video). So if you struggle with bugs on apple trees in your area you may need to use a dormant oil spray regimen, probably beginning in about February.
Shipping to California has some restrictions per the Jung website. Restricted includes: citrus, chestnut, walnut, hickory and pecan trees as well as potted vegetable plants. Here’s the link: www.jungseed.com/shipping

When we moved to our new house it came with 4 columnar apple trees- this year they were loaded with blossoms 🤞🍎

A great idea I just purchase a Serenity and North Pole from Jung. Look forward to adding these to the garden.

So glad you love them. I think that is my favorite DA variety.
These are so cool! I didn't even know they existed I'm gonna give me two! Thanks Erin.
I’ll have to keep these in mind for next year!!

thank you 🍎
Great video, Erin!
I’ll have to add this to my list! Maybe when you create a Christmas list you could add this as a reminder! 🌼🐝

Great info will check these out for my small garden space.

Thank you Erin, wonderful video ! Iam going to try this apple, its a perfect solution in my garden

Erin, could you have planted them in smaller pots and sunk those pots into the bigger ones, or would that be wasted effort?
Great video

I just need these!😍

I’ve never had a problem with cold and apple grafts. So sorry to hear about your cherry! What a disappointment.

That would be fun to have! If in ground, they will survive Wisconsin winters? You may have said already :)
Yes they will! In fact I had one planted in the garden (terrible placement) that lived happily for several years.
They are unfortunately out of stock of all columnar 😢 online.
What zone are they?
I wonder if these could be planted in raised beds against a fence and wintered over there too? Inspiration.... again. (Smile) I love apples! zone 6a
Absolutely

Very observant! Yes I’m using it for mulch and some is for our paths.
@@TheImpatientGardener Thanks for responding!
I am 83 yeas old. Moving pots that size is an impossibility for me. Could I just give them winter protection (straw, burlap, etc). I am in zone 6.
Yes, I would guess that would be fine.
Do I need to prune these? What is a typical yield?
My understanding is minimal pruning and I don’t know about yields.
Can I transplant a peach tree that is 7 -9 years old ?

What about bugs and cold and heat

How is that they are already out of stock!
It’s past bare root shipping season, but put it on your list for next year!
Unfortunately- the link-Jung site does not list the very IMPORTANT INFORMATION-CHILL HOURS-⁉️❓❓
FYI-They do NOT Ship to CA.
Chill hours for columnar apples are 800 to 1,200.

enjoyed the video ( u k )
I just checked and they are out of stock. 😞🌷💚🙃
Yes, unfortunately it’s too late for bare root shipping but put them on your list for next year!
Man, I wish I was bred tall and skinny. My parents gave me shrub.
So cool! Might need to find a place to try this!
