What you said touched me. ❤️🤧🥰My mom passed away several years ago. But, from the time I was a teenager, she and I shared a love for British TV dramas, limited as they were in availability-growing up in Texas-in the form of Masterpiece Theatre, Upstairs Downstairs, Poirot and Miss Marple. Many happy memories, and cups of tea. Every time I watch a great British drama such as this, I think of my mom, and how much she would have enjoyed it. Bless you. 😊✨✨✨
That scene with Marsden and Margaret Whiting in her lair is the best of the series. Whiting is superb and brought out the finest in Marsden. That is the sign of a great actress. Love scenes are usually gratuitous, but it was worth it to see Ms. Whiting own this scene. She is still beautiful and a powerful actress.
Yes, it was a brilliant scene. It was also funny and sad at the same time. It was rather surprising that Daglish fell into the trap even if it was to get information. She really had the upper hand even in, and maybe all the more because of, her inebriated state. Totally outside the box for Daglish. I wonder was it in the book? Well done Margaret Whiting!! 👏🏿👍💅
I re-watched this after having seen the 2021 remake (dreadful) . I wish Sheila Allen were still alive so I could ask her if SPOILER ALERT she did voice work to create a voice with vestiges of a German accent. One appalling thing in the remake was that Natasha Little in addititon to being all wrong for the part sounded like a whiney debutante. The voice was all wrong.
goodstorylover I f this window box were mine, I'd spend all my indoor hours there surrounded with my 2000 plus books, happily reading them over and over.
They fairly went through some amount of tea did those nurses. "I'm here about a murder?" "Cup of tea?" "I'm not feeling well. Please help." "Sit down. I'll get the tea ready."
British left some of their hangovers to my country India, be it language, judiciary, democracy, schools, trains, cricket, polo, but took hangover " TEA " From India to be inflected to Anglo Saxons.
set settings ( gear icon lower right corned ) at slowest speed 0.25 . paused at 17:47 . on the pamphlet cover in his hands is printed " The Suffolk Home for German War Refugees " ... probably worthless to the plot . well at least i took the time and effort for everyone to know and share
That's it? Did something get lopped off? Even as a former Nazi, Sr Hilda had to have a motive for killing these two nurses, didn’t she? I don’t think this ending was a true conclusion.
I have hard time believing the way he treats the arms dealer's wife given that his approach to treating even cooperative witnesses is to accuse them at the outset of lying and being the murderer.
I quite like these shows but I have to admit that I do not like Dagliesh much, he is so rude, condesending and cold, I realise he had an important job to do but he really takes it a bit far, I am surprised that he gets away with that behaviour but i suppose it is the 70's
Scotland yard compromising and investigation? Hmmm...it's been a long time since I read P.D. James works, but I think that was a liberty of the script writer.
Part of me wants to think it was the matron wot did it, but I think Dalgleish usually has a blonde love interest and I don't know who else would qualify in this storyline.
I agree, and was disgusted that Dagliesh would stoop so low, I can not say I like him, he is so rude and full of himself, I realise he is important and has an important job but really? He would not get away with behaviour like that today
@@fionabryant7923 Both appalling and hilarious that she believed he was having himself seduced. Remember feeling sorry for her husband when he kept on asking about his wife not visiting him in hospital. She was then probably also drunk and busy entertaining.
That was an extraordinary scene with Sister Gearing in Matron's quarters. Here was a firm declaration of the causes of the deaths of the two nursing students, stated with utter conviction, and the police officer charged with the investigation did not bother even to insure what evidence Gearing had. Instead of asking, he allowed her to walk out of the room. I am stunned. No investigator in the world would do that. I really am disappointed at the awkwardly involuted plot lines characteristic of this author of detective stories.
what sort of ending is that ?! . we are supposed to think the seemingly inconsequential name said at the end tells all ? pretty crappy ending for this almost 4 hours for 4 episodes based on PD James novel Shroud For A Nightingale . Is there 5th and final episode ? i would be grateful for any and all replies
Dalgliesh is surprising awful in this. The way he treats everone here, it seems that he doesn't so much care to find the murderer, he simply enjoys to trample on people.
I think he is amazingly professional and restrained when it seems everyone is lying, trying to get an advantage or just plain not get caught as a cold-blooded murderer. He is employed to catch a murderer and stop more of them. He’s amazingly controlled to me but will not be deflected.
No she isn't entirely. Sister Brumfett killed the two girls because she was madly in love with Mary Taylor (as to whether they were having a physical relationship, based on episode 5 I would say yes). Then Mary Taylor killed Sister Brumfett partly to have "closure" so that no one would know about her past.
I like and enjoy these P.D. James's series but must say that I find Adam Dalgliesh rather arrogant and condecending at times, even rude, I use to feel like this about him as well when I use to read the books, so it is not the way the actor portrays him but rather the way the character was described/invented by by the author
"I'm sorry. We become what we do". Wonderful line. So true.
I’m a retired American nurse, but I do so understand, and will never forget the rigid expectations of the life of a student nurse. I love this particular Dalgliesh story. I’ve watched it a couple of times over the years. 💖👩🏼⚕️
Watched this when I was a little girl with my Mum she now has dementia and I watch it all at least twice a week takes me back to my happy place😋
Sadie williams aww. Bless you

Oh, I used to watch these with my momma too. She died 9 months ago, still reeling from it.
It's somehow comforting to know others felt the same ❤️🩹
I loved this show

Agree 100%. Chemistry at its subtle best. Love Margaret Whiting's acting since Sinbad.

never seen these before. Really have enjoyed them Adam Dalgliesh : good actor, enjoy watching
Good aacting I agree but that is Roy Marsden the actor, the character Dagliesh is not a nice man, very rude, cold and far to condesending
Aka professional, as he points out, students DIED.
A writer who can’t allow himself to “feel too much”? He’s a real piece of work.
Len’s eye patches are crazy!

I love Mary Taylor actress' voice.

Enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
Many thanks for the excellent upload of these superb shows. I am hooked! Great way to pass time as we enter our 4th Covid lock down.
Hahaha….that lady drinking and swaying/walking to music!! Hahaha….fun part to play
What an absolutely amazing window seat around 32:4O, I would love to have one like that
Write to Anglia TV and see if they'll sell it to you. Pretty sure it's a soundstage prop.
Still love it :o)
goodstorylover I f this window box were mine, I'd spend all my indoor hours there surrounded with my 2000 plus books, happily reading them over and over.
Precisely, preferably with the rain outside.
If I had a house, that would be the first thing to plan in it :o)
The scene with Dalgliesh and Dettinger's wife is so Tales Of The Unexpected-esque. Got to hand it to Anglia.
Roy marsden was in tales of the unexpected along with Dudley Sutton as a detective
Interesting episode- surprising interaction
Dalgliesh takes his tea black in a previous scene, but happy to take Matron's white tea, no sugar here.
They fairly went through some amount of tea did those nurses.
"I'm here about a murder?"
"Cup of tea?"
"I'm not feeling well. Please help."
"Sit down. I'll get the tea ready."
Hahaha, thinking the same thing. Drinking tea all day and all night
Are you English? I am. I could cope with almost anything with a cup of tea.

32:58 A continuinty problem. The matron has forgotten. Dalgleish takes his tea black.

Nurse Hilda reminds me of O'Brien with the pin curls from Downton Abbey and Dalgliesh's Sgt reminds me of a young Philip Seymour Hoffman
That's it? Did something get lopped off? Even as a former Nazi, Sr Hilda had to have a motive for killing these two nurses, didn’t she? I don’t think this ending was a true conclusion.
51:29 till the End. The suspense music is awesome!
❤👍

Marsden can rock a three piece suit but that moustache is foul.
Only Marsden can pull off that moustache.
Scotland yard compromising and investigation? Hmmm...it's been a long time since I read P.D. James works, but I think that was a liberty of the script writer.
'So surgical the police. Don't you think so Matron?'
'I'd rather a sharp knife then a blunt one
Terrifying!
Around 41:40, I remember all those cars ...
Part of me wants to think it was the matron wot did it, but I think Dalgleish usually has a blonde love interest and I don't know who else would qualify in this storyline.
Going around in circles
she is Dancing to a song from the Godfather !!.. did well.
The woman's drunk out of her mind. What's the point of questioning her? That scene was appalling.
I agree, and was disgusted that Dagliesh would stoop so low, I can not say I like him, he is so rude and full of himself, I realise he is important and has an important job but really? He would not get away with behaviour like that today
It was hilarious

That was odd... the mystery seemed sort of by-the-way. I might have stopped watching it, but the music and aura were addicting.
9:30 music sounds exciting
they should send this as in finnish tv yle....
I am not liking the part about the widow wanting to dance for her answers! Dumb
K Jackson if you read the book it was worse than this.
It seems to me totally out of character that Dalgleish would snog her.
Don't tell me what to do! What a lowly reply.
😂 Someone suggesting Dalgliesh should better sit down...
Hahahahahah
I don’t care for the actor playing Dagliesh.

Don’t partake?
The security guard looks familiar at 9:28
Classictv90s Leonard Pearce or grandad trotter from only fools and horses.even uncle Albert trotter appears a few times.
Buster Merryfield came late into acting after a taking it up following retirement as a bank manager.
It's grandad.....
Classictv90s he’s off only fools and horses
Dalgleish looms over women...in more ways than one. 33:09 he looms over matron then sits very close. such a subtle seduction.
He’s 6’4. Don’t think that’s an exaggeration. Tall drink of water.

Absolutely cannot stand Dalgleish and his sidekick.
The character of Dalgleish is much nicer and kinder in the new series.
Those appalling hairdos of the women in this series! Didn't anyone see how unflattering they were?
Different times, different preferences. Doesn't anyone now see how unflattering the appalling modern long decorated plastic nails are, and tattoos?
Also in the book Mary Taylor has very long hair that is wound up in an elaborate coiffure. The hair is all wrong here.
