Also, I don't think Latinos get offended that we call ourselves Americans, but when we refer to American meaning as U.S citizen. I think it is kinda selfish, I mean it is true that they are technically Americans too so I feel they get to claim that lol. Also, with the exception of African Americans and Native Americans, most other U.S citizens have the liberty of identifying with their ancestral nationalities outside of the U.S, while more Latinos only identify with their native background. At the end of the day people indigenous to the Americas are the ones that can truly claim "American" and that definitely applies more-so to Latinos.

Some stores in the USA have shopping baskets with wheels & a long handle & that has been for a few years (granted I have only seen them in a health food mart that isn't a full size grocery supermarket -- they also had the smaller basket + a smaller shopping cart as well).

@@TristanKuhn agreed with that, & also agreed concerning the term American. How can both North & South America be one continent? Certainly you can talk about both as being the Americas or using the Age of Exploration term the “New” World. You didn’t put the possible term for people from the USA as U.S.ers or United Staters - which wouldn’t work either.

In Argentina they usually call Americans "Yankee" (lol) and sometimes "Estadounidense" ... They hardly ever call you guys, "Americans" ... But its exacly how you said... You can call them "United Stadian of Mexico... or Argentina... etc...

This is what happens. The name of the country translates as United Mexican States (not “of Mexico”), since we are a kind of “federation” like the United States of America; we are both a union of sort-of-independent-states. We all just call it Mexico (México) and sometimes is referred as a republic (it is although not officially in the name). We identify ourselves as mexicans (mexicanos) and then by the state we live in.
Now (and fellow mexicans will get angry with me), we are told in elementary school that we are “americans” (americanos) because we live in the “continent of America”, and also as “north-americans” because we live in the “North America” side of the continent. Now I know that each country teaches a different division of the world, since there is no real standard. Some divide “continent of America” in 2 (North & South), some in 3 (North, Central, South), some in 4 (North, Caribbean, Central, South) and some make no division. Because of this, you may find people who say, to give an example: “-I’m playense (town/city Playa del Carmen), quintanarooense (state Federal Entity/State of Quintana Roo), mexican (country United Mexican States) and american (continent of America)”. Therefore they may identify themselves as “americans”.
Now I give you reason for naming yourself american. It makes sense for being from the United States of America, since, people from the United Mexican States name themselves mexicans. Myself, I do see myself as “american” (from continent) but I don’t see that as important because as you said, nobody says something like that. I also call citizens from the United States of America “americans”, “unitedstatians” and “gringos” (some people say it with a bad connotation, others don’t, I personally treat it as a demonym nickname). And not long ago if you said like “-He is an american person” you were refering to a person from the United States of America. Even more, saying “north-american” meant obviously you were from the United States of America.
I hope this answers your question. I believe the other “latin-american” countries think the same way.

  • @Guwig

-Taxis in Mexico already have meter but not where you expect (or some don't work), so they don't say that have one, especially if you looks foreigner.
-About drugss was easy to find them for you because you was in some of the most visited places by young Americans and a lot of them go to get drunk and high, and you looks like and stereotypical gringo, so... And this is related with the cops issues, they stop yong gringo type people for that fact.
About diversity, you are thinking about diversity in VERY American terms, mexico have around 70 etnia, for Americans they are just "natives" but a northern Mexican compare to an indigenous person from Yucatan are so diferente like an Asian an European.
-Some of those trees were already there before the city grew, (it's not like they put trees of those sizes in the middle of the street😂)
And during winter in some communities in Chihuahua the temperature could decreases to -5.8°F (not always of course), still warm for a regular american? As you but seems you was on places from center to south of mexico and during summer, things changes a lot on the north during winter.

      @TristanKuhn  3 роки тому +1

These are great additions. 100% agree with you about the drug thing and me being in touristy spots. Definitely fit the gringo look to a T and that’s why I’m targeted haha. Just couldn’t be the one to say it. Also, very interesting point about diversity, I’m looking at it through American glasses for sure

Gonna have fun commenting here lol But still the video is great:
1:21 yes, I was surprised that in the States you’re supposed to do it yourself.
1:27 true, only in Puebla and commemoration in schools but never parties or drinkin’
1:53 yup someone made a video of that: all americas spanish cities are built on squares and churches
2:45 yes 😆 all kind of sellers, its annoying sometimes. Maybe they don’t do it in the US cuz streets and suburbs would be full of “sonic pollution”
3:38 Houses either “buy” a tank or have a tank in the roof that refills with a pipe truck. I said “buy” because first you gotta buy an empty tank (pretty expensive) and then each time the truck comes by, you buy new gas (cheaper than tank itself) by “trading” your empty tank with a new one.
3:57 We are not as car dependant, but it depends. I know people here who have to commute from one side of the city to the other.
5:20 depends on city and zone
    6:14 ok i didn’t expect that
6:30 for no reason. Most places I know here, you can flush toilet paper
    6:36 and I hate it
7:41 dont forget the green lemon juice on everything
9:10 😂 idk why but i think that’s common in all third world countries, even more in places like India
11:19 and it’s embarrassing and difficult to understand for other mexicans, it actually makes things harder.
    14:10 true
14:25 sounds cliché but it’s true, and proud of it, core of mexican value and it extends even to neighbors and whole communities
15:45 I don’t know. 🤔 maybe we unconsciously think sidewalks are more of a decoration... nah 🤣, depends on the city and many don’t mind walking on the road even with a perfect sidewalk. Personally I prefer sidewalks.
16:36 soccer culture all the way, even with other sports soccer stands out a lot ⚽️.
16:53 dont forget even on parking lots, someone will offer to wash your car 👍🏼. And btw, we have some machine car washes.
17:32 “Ahorita”, “al rato/al ratito”, “ya mero” means a time between less than a minute and never.
20:28 catholics observe every single day festivity and meaning the whole year. Even for non-catholics the big celebrations are culturally relevant. Christmas still centers around the birth of Jesus.
    20:45 flowers and restaurants day.
21:03 true, actually not the best one but useful when needed!
21:40 not where I live. Even parents tell their kids not to.
    22:12 yeah it’s controversial.
23:45 yes but they doubled in the pandemic. Speaking of “clean shoes”, maybe you forgot to mention that we don’t take off our shoes inside our homes.
24:16 I think it was an idea of the ministry of culture or tourism. There weren’t before the 2010’s.

    7. FALSE you can do it yoirself or ask for them to wash and fold . 8. FALSE don’t know where you’ve been at but most houses have a pipe system to avoid those insects you mentioned if ever . 9. TRUE / false , you can pay what it says but I myself prefer to know how much I’ll pay instead of traffic surprises . 10. TRUE/ False . Informal vendors or street vendors or family shops in a neighborhood accept only cash cos maybe the don’t have a bank account . Formal convoenkenfe stores or supermarkets or formal establishments accepts credit or debit cards. 14. FALSE yes there are chihuahuas but I can assure you regular families own more poodles or Malteses than chihuahuas . 16. FALSE / true , poor families prefer to buy tanks but most houses have big stationary tanks at home and the company refills them every 1.2-3 months depending on your needs or when you call them with charge to your credit card . 18. FALSE when a poor family is in need they start their own business maybe at home as you mention but it’s not a rule. Remember in Mexkco you have to work to eat . You don’t receive money from the government for not having a job. See all the problems you have in this post covid era where some people don’t want to get back to their jobs cos they prefere to receive money and stay at home. 19&20. FALSE those tetra bricks packages or pouches are Ultrapasteirozed developed to avoid the need of refrigeration until you open them. There are also gallons or half gallons of milk but they sell by the day cos they don’t last unless refrigerated . You can find both. That includes purées or cooked lentils , it’s like canned food . Eggs for example and some mother foods should not be kept in the fridge . Check it out some European countries do the same . It’s nonsense to keep mustard or Mayo in the fridge . Yea even Mexican refrigerators have a section for eggs but it’s not the best way to keep them fresher . Like onions or potato . Do your research . 23. There are no crossing kites in little towns but yes in mayor cities . Sometimes when traffic is loaded , the agents “aid” the automatic system of traffic lights if there’s an accident or there’s a failure or they think they can do it better Than the automatic system . 26. FALSE. Controlled medicines or antibiotics are only sold with a doctor’s prescription . “Common” drugs are sold without no prescription . 26. Don’t know . Since many spring breakers come to get wasted maybe they’re offered like I’ve been asked in Barcelona for example. I have never been offered in Mexico . 27. TRUE but false . Ignorant people think the waste baskets are for those things but in reality it’s only for Kotex . I never go to Public toilets not even in an 11 hour flight to Europe . You can control yourself without suffering. 30. FALSE/ True not every window has bars for protection using my street barely 1 house . 31. Beaches have vendors in quite public beaches not touristic resorts perhaps only in Acapulco 42. FALSE perhaps n that specific McDonald’s solves their sales problem separating the dessert section but I have never seen one in my like like that . 46. FALSE there are skyscrapers but not in the zone you showed . We have the tallest in latinamerica for example but there are specific financial areas . The one you showed the Latinamerican tower was the first skyscraper but there are lots higher than that one nowadays . 56,57,58. since 2019 with our new government that corruption is fought . We have asked in many ways your government to stop selling guns in Mexico , customs are now controlled by the army to avoid old ways and businesses but there are still some “tourists “ that enter the country to sell them that’s why they ask people walking at night , but hey! They don’t kill people the way we see it Inter US news ! 60. FALSE . Tequila If young we drink it with Squirt ( a Grapefruit soda ) if it’s a good one it is drink like whiskey . You talk as of every Mexican drink it like in mexkco city. Mezcal is drunk more in Oaxaca and CDmx but it’s not general . 62. If you haven’t been in some cities of Baja you haven’t seen Asian people . Or Afro Mexican people that live in Veracruz . Mexico is a big country not only Mexico city and Cancun . 68. No, streets are not put in the middle of the sidewalks , you cannot cut a tree and if a sidewalk is needed or a house is to be constructed in an specific lot, they have to let the tree be or not building anything at all . 69. FALSE . We have deserts, jungle , snow , beaches , rain forests , so there are places with lots of cold , lots of heat and climates in the middle . 70. FALSE . Soccer as Just Americans call it ( football to the rest of the world ) is the most popular sport worldwide . Football as you call it is only popular in the US and Mexico don’t know of in Canada too cos we’re neighbors . 73. FALSE. There’s no bottle tax is just you pay for some bottles but you get your money back if you give the bottle back . You just pay for the liquid. A little more expensive are some beers but you don’t give the bottle back you just throw it to the waste basket . 77. FALSE. Dinner is the most important meal of the day here the most important meal of the day is at 2-3pm it’s not lunch it’s a dinner if you will , and have a “Mexican sweet bread” and milk . 1-2 hours to eat cos some people get back home to eat with their family . If you didn’t eat properly at 2-3 pm you go to eat tacos at night or something else or dinner with friends instead of bread and milk . 80. Dont generalize I have never seen baskets like those at May supermarket , where? 81. Tips for opening the door? Really ? Never Heard of it ! 86. Those puppies being killed was a shock for me and I knew it from your video but you should’ve reported it , it’s not legally allowed and just filming ? I couldn’t watch your brutal video . 94. Normal for poor people in Mexico city to play in the fountains and since repression is not allowed they do it at their own risk . 96. Besides day of the death which is a tradition only ignorant poeple are superstitious. Bonus . Just the US use the imperial system in the world . Even English use many metric system units .

Appreciate your input and inside. Always good to hear from a local. There are intended to be general deferences and not all of them apply to all of Mexico nor to all of the US. I ran these by multiple locals in multiple cities and they agreed that all these were general truths. Not saying they’re all right but I did good research and still believe they’re mostly true unless you look for the exception or application in which they could be false

I think the video was good, knowing Tristan and the way he does videos, just like the ones about Australia and Turkey/Europe.
I disagree a bit. In the US you’ll find skylines even in not so big cities, unlike Mexico so I find his point valid. And regarding the weather, even with so many ecosystems our weather is great and isn’t that extreme. There are cities all over the world where it’s really too hot or truly cold, or perfect climate in a season but a hell/freeze-to-be-outside in the other; here in Mexico is liveable all year ‘round.
Yes, I was gonna make a similar statement comparing the police of the 2 countries but I thought a debate like that doesn’t belong to this video.
And I watch his videos to chill so...

More than considering it offensive that US citizens use "american" as their demonym (in a rightful way if you ask me since other words are too complicated) the fact is that US americans do tend to be very ignorant about many things concerning latinamerica and thus we take the demonym issue as a flag for that... and it can get easily personal. These things are taught differently in our school systems. We're told there are 6 continents including Antartica but there's only one american continent (represented by the red hoop in the olympic flag) hence why we call ourselves americans the same way italians, french, slovenians, icelanders etc. call themselves europeans and so on.

    • @juayitl
      @juayitl 3 роки тому +1

Another of those things we're taught differently that may blow your mind: in spanish we call this number 1000,000,000 mil millones ("a thousand millions") because a thousand of those make a BILLÓN or 1,000,000,000,000 in a proper decimal system, however in english you jump before the multiple is whole and call a BILLION our mil millones.
