This is a clip from the 1956 movie, "Forbidden Planet" that introduced Robby the Robot. Robby was also the name for Issac Asimov's first Robot in the book I Robot.
You really can't get the full visual impact this movie had when it was released in theaters since it was in Cinemascope with stereophonic sound .. Great movie in the day
Dang I wish I could've seen it that way. Some movies are best on the big screen, though I can blow'em up here on my computer with my face just inches away . . . In 1956, I was still too young [not quite 2].
Amazingly Advanced film for its time. Truly our answer to the film Metropolis. And to imagine Leslie Nielsen was the chief character from the ship, and a completely serious role
Some great acting here. The humans are both amused and unnerved by the robot. But what I think is so good is that it subverts expectations, and doesn't reveal the robot as some evil killing machine.
Robby, and the robot from Lost in Space were actually designed by a guy who's full time job was designing old style round washing machines. Can you tell? lol
Note 'fasten seat belts" command in a land vehicle - this half a decade before American-made cars were required to even have seat belts - in the front seat only!
The guy comments that Robby "looks after us like a mother". Interesting coincidence with "I Am Mother", which I just watched. Very interesting plot about having a robot as your mother from the beginning of life. Plot twists are just right. So when I heard that about how Robby looks after them like a mother something clicked.
The ship's commanding officer - early to mid 30's - robs the cradle! Ann Fancis's character has to be only 18 based on the chronology of the story. Legal tender, but still not old enough to have a beer on Earth - at least not in most US states at the time, and now drinking age is 21 everywhere.
In those days women were getting married and having children around 17. My day was 21 and my mom was 17. I guess it was a grass on the field mind set. They had 8 kids and 25 grand kids. Married for life. So it wasn't all bad.
@@johnwood406 in my farming community in Canada all but one girl was pregnant by 15.5. I was in LA by then and we'd get the local newspaper. All it meant was they were milking the cows down the road, not dad and mom's. And don't get me started on the LA Latinos. They were ready to go by 14. Jessica Simpsons sister was married and pregnant (not nec. in that order) but it was either Kentucky or Arkansas so same thing.
@@ryan7864 Pretty much. Which is why I said the right hand and actors. Robocop remake wasn’t that bad. Someone who could emulate Morbius (Walter Pigeon) well would be a good start.
Ever since I was little, it annoyed me when he said he is monitored when he should have said he is programmed. That's the only fault I have with this otherwise excellent movie!
I remember watching this film when I was a kid and loved Robbie the robot. Shhh still do 😁
This film is still well worth watching and has held it's age well. This was the first Sci-Fi movie I ever saw.
Forbidden Planet one of the greatest sci fi movies ever made. Robbie the robot! ❤😊
"Surely, you're a robot". -" I am a robot. And don't call me Shirley..."
That sound track made it seem like you were watching a film from another time and planet!
Twilight Zone...Star Trek, Lost in Space, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica.....Everything comes from this!
And the first non-traditional adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest"...
"I hardly use it myself, sir. It promotes rust." God damn I love that line.
The cook trying to find out if the masculine voiced robot is worth hitting on 😂
Amazing...Amazing...Amazing. And all done before CGI. Certainly a great, if not one of the greatest SF, films ever made.
Some scene made in MGI Man Generating Picture or good old drew.
Robby is truly one of the best actors in history.
did you mean "Robby is Shirley the best actor" Shirley
He had his own movie in 1954.
Little did Robby know that his walk and rounded appearance would resemble most of America in 2022. Going back on Atkins!
Not to forget that they didn't shoot him right away.
Robby wasn't all that, the robot in "Lost in Space" beat him ua-cam.com/video/gv3kBLKXrkc/v-deo.html
Amazing to watch to this day. Great effects.
That movie was beyond it's time.

@@henrybrowne7248 Cinemascope had much wider screens than a normal theater so you saw a much wider view compared to standard screens
This was THE best sci-fi movie of the 50s!
I find it hard to rate it higher than the Dsy The Earth Stood Still myself.
@@davidsmith5523 Forbidden Planet is a tad better for me. It definitely influenced Star Trek.
@Galactusz007 Yes and clearly the Mr Spock character was influenced by Klaatu.
@@davidsmith5523 Yeah, that one's tough to beat.
Also check out This Island Earth, around the same year. I really liked it . . .
what an awesome intro to the robot.

Don't call me Shirley 😂
I know, I love tripping on that as I watch and re-watch bits from this sci-fi classic.
Didn't know that this was Leslie. Had to check twice.
After this movie in 1956 you had to wait till 1968s 2001 before you had this kind of quality again in a Sci-Fi move..
I was too young for this one but I saw 2001 when it first came out! At the spectacular Chinese-Grauman Theater, I believe . . .
Some great acting here. The humans are both amused and unnerved by the robot. But what I think is so good is that it subverts expectations, and doesn't reveal the robot as some evil killing machine.
this Robbie had legs..the Robbie in Lost in space had drive belts-like a tank.
One of my favorite scifi movies. Thanks!
Very eerie seeing Robbie approaching from afar, it forbodes the monster arrival.
Powering up. Protectron on duty.
Shut down signal resive. This unit return to charge pod.
Décor fabuleux, digne d'un tableau de Maître.
It is a painting… Did you know?
Incredible film..
È il film che mi ha appassionato da giovane ai generi di fantascienza .
THIS Robbie DOES follow the 3 Laws of Robotics, created by Asimov
Robbie’s voice was provided by Marvin Miller, who also played Michael Anthony on The Millionaire, one of my favorite 50s TV shows.
Robby, and the robot from Lost in Space were actually designed by a guy who's full time job was designing old style round washing machines. Can you tell? lol
So my guess would be Robby does laundry , too???
very similar. The one in L I S lost the legs and had belt drive. Honda's ASIMO beat's the lot
It's been way over 50 yrs since I last watched this . I gotta rent it
Would be a great way to get around the Simpson Desert!😀🤖🛸🏜️
Note 'fasten seat belts" command in a land vehicle - this half a decade before American-made cars were required to even have seat belts - in the front seat only!
This film was better than every bit of modern CGI in existence.
Some things are SO GOOD they're NO GOOD.
I found out this robot as a toy on a website some years ago !! I BOUGHT IT OF COURSE !!!! Just iconic robot !!!
If you have $30,000,00 odd US dollars you can purchase a life-size replica. 😅

You can see the lost in space robot influence in Robbie
Same designer
I love it when Robbie makes all that liquor for the cook🤪
De niño la vi varias veces Robin el robot una masa😊
De toute beauté. À l'époque où nous avions de la vraie télé.

Good movie i seen this growing up

When I win the lottery I'm buying a Fred Barton replica (made from the original plans). Its going in the living room and my wife has no say in it.
Planète interdite ! Je l'ai vue etent enfant ! Magnifique effets spéciaux pour l'époque !

Thank you for the movie recommendation. I'll take a look. This was the very first sci-fi movie I ever saw and the content is still very current.
robbie is worth over 1 million
More like $3.5M at an auction
Rick would give you $50 as he is taking all the risk and has to frame it
The best movie ever
最初に出てくるロングで地上を走る砂埃が、何気に凄いなあ!
もちろん仕掛けで撮ったのだろうけども。
Greatest line in the movie came from Robbie...
" I just gave myself an oil job".
Unfortuately Lost in Space took that line and trumped it with many more silly lines that made no sense in the series.
Protect and serve. Move along please.

Not in Canada. And our pot age is about 11, judging by what I see on the streets. And vaping? 12.

Based on the speed the car arrived, I'm amazed seatbelts weren't the first thing they put on when they got in...
Robby, the box on legs robot that went on to also being a wind-up toy in Japan.
Robbies voice sounds more natual than the robo voices commonly heard on youtube. Why is that?
