I just installed a garbage disposal for the first time. After I installed I wanted to better understand how they worked. This was very informative! I also appreciated that you explained the other motor types as well a when & why they are useful. Thanks for taking the time to post!

So funny and interesting, I was going to install my new garbage disposal and because I'm into Arduino programing and basics electronics, I wanted to know which parts I could save from the old disposal, then I found this video! ...so well explained and showcase a really great example of mechanical, electronic and useful design! Thanks for this kind of videos.

I think the Waste King garbage disposers have a permanent magnet motor and the InSinkErator disposers have a induction motor.

Only industrial 3 phase vacuums use induction
Thats a different motor entirely than those thats a higher speed 3 phase thats a single phase 1725/1750rpm motor
Most vacuums blenders and power tools use ac/dc motors basically a brushed dc with the coil from an ac motor

It's still a single phase induction motor. Plenty of tools use them.

This is a video that explains how the common garbage disposal works, it is not for people who has problem with theirs and try to fix it. The professor did a good job of applying his knowledge to reverse engineer a garbage disposal design and explained it. The demo unit appears to be an Insinkerator model and it looks new, it is a waste to cut it out. However, he committed a serious error when he tried to cut the top housing into half. He did not use protective eyewear and he did not point the cutter away from him, where the metal shaving flied into his shirt. In fact, he did not even need to cut it into half, the grinding blade is clearly visible, he can just point the camera for a close up of the grinding ring teeth. He could just open it up, showing on the working parts and be done with it. Sometimes, doing too much is not actually helping the demonstration to the audiences.

Can the grinder platform be replaced? Where can I get parts?

Kind of surprised a guy with all those degrees would operate a cutter / grinder without safety glasses and with the discharge toward himself rather than away.

He did not make this video to teach people common sense.
