  • “My mother was in Belsen concentration camp… she always used to say, it’s not a competition. That is exactly the mistake that Diane Abbott has made.”
Lord Finkelstein says Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn “refuse to recognise” oppression that “doesn’t fit” in their worldview.

The point that Diane Abbot was making is a valid point (and one that was alluded to by the interviewer) in that skin colour is the highly visible indicator of ethnicity. Neither she nor Jeremy Corbyn are "holocaust deniers' and both have fought tirelessly against all forms of racism, including antisemitism. However, when black people raise the slavery issue, they are invariably told that it's history and they should get over it. Well, as appalling as the holocaust was, that, too, is history and no one other than far right extremists would dream of suggesting that they should "get over it". But prejudice against black people is current and ongoing... and looks to continue until long after Ms Abbot is no longer around.
Starmer has kicked out a large number of Jewish members who oppose Israel's treatment of Palestinians for "antisemitism". Showing any support for Palestinians is defined by Labour as "antisemitism".
This is just jumping on the opportunity to further purge the Labour Party of the last vestiges of socialism on which the Labour Party was founded.

The most insane part of denial is that the actual instigators and perpetrators were full on committed in words and actions to do the exact thing that these disingenious sociopaths pretend never happened. The guy in charge loud and clear called for a final solution of extermination. Genocide was the goal and they were all in. Also I would really appreciate an explanation that is supported by historic evidence, as to how it is that my adopted aunt was an orphan all of a sudden, along with thousands of other children. I suppose in that narrative the parents all just went to space to man the lasers.

What has been missed in all the journalism I have so far seen, was the reason for Abbot's letter. She was raising objections to the findings of the Evidence for Equality National Survey conducted by the Centre on the Dynamics of Ethnicity, a leading evidenced based research group with significant UK university affiliations. As a proportion of their individual populations, Gypsy/Travellers and Jewish people reported more racially based abuse than black groups. The Observer newspaper had the temerity to point out these findings, which in some ways shows that racial abuse in the UK's black population is significantly lower than some comparatively smaller (by absolute size) ethnic groups.
As Lord Finklestein's mother says: this is not a competition and in fact it is shocking that in this day and age both Gypsy/Travellers and Jews are receiving much higher levels of racist abuse than their absolute size as an ethnic group would suggest. Of course, no group should be subject to any form of racism and it is particularly strange that someone with Abbots knowledge of racism should try to explain away these results by historic and inaccurate comparisons.
It is to the shame of both the USA and Africa that black people were segregated but at least they escaped being crammed into cattle trucks and murdered within hours of reaching their final destination, for example.

Instead, we get constantly reminded of colour, race, gender identity and religious identity, to the point where the government and media are creating a more intolerant society by thrusting these issues into people's faces more and more!
The Holocaust happened. Jewish people suffered at the hands of some of the most inhumane, evil people ever to be born.
Anyone who doubts that is an idiot.
But at the same time, is it anti semitic to say that Israel is treating the Palestinians abhorrently? Are we not allowed an opinion that goes against the modern narrative?

Totally wrong. If they have a problem it is their focus is on the modern Israeli state and its treatment of the Palestinians and this can lead to the appearance of anti semitism by sometimes, unconsciously, appearing to lessen its impact. Also add into the mix the fact that right wing british Jewish activists have conflated any criticism of the Israeli states politics is therefore anti semitic which you will find probably makes up 95% of internal labour complaints. Look to the internal politics of the Labour party and the rights attempts to get rid of Corbyn. If there had been a court case ,involving their claims, they would have been quickly dismissed through lack of evidence. Yes there was some anti semitic rhetoric within the party but generally it was very small scale and was largely from Muslim members for which there is no excuse. For what actually went on within this period I'd advise watching Al Jazeera's the lobby, which pre dates the anti semitic row and their series, The Labour Files. Also read the Forde Report and Peter Oborne's reports. In essence it was massive overkill because of Labour internal politics and, because it occurred close to an upcoming general election, it was conflated by the right wing press as well as the conservative Jewish chronicle. Also look at the complete lack of due diligence by the producer involved in the BBC'S Panorama investigation. I actually always thought Corbyn was an awful choice as Labour leader but, as a democrat, I'm certain this was a political assassination using any means possible by the right of the Labour party and that later political historians will point this out

I'm not sure she said it was a competition.
Every aspect of life is nuanced, and that applies to the degree of overt racism any one group or individual might experience.
The hard thing right now, is the refusal of either side of any debate to accept anything that doesn't fit their own point of view.
The fact that she felt forced to retract the whole statement, rather than be able to debate her point about the degrees of the issue is worrying.
Whether you agree or vehemently disagree, her argument has some merit at the most basic level i.e. some groups are more easily and consistently singled out because of the colour of their skin.
All forms of racism and oppression are wrong, regardless of what arbitrary bias any one group uses to decide to use - colour, religion ......
As a species we seem hard wired to find something to dislike / hate in ourselves and the extremes at either side of the spectrum push the same old buttons and hatred and atrocities soon follow.

If you're from a high crime neighborhood and visit a lower crime neighborhood, they'll see you as highly suspicious because their experience level is lower and act accordingly. I am more than a little shocked that the UK has failed to move beyond the last century in its legal formulations. Very depressing to see. Diane Abbott is utterly selfish at times.
I remember her speaking with a Syrian doctor who was trying to save lives in Syria, and who was asking for military action... and Abbott was very dismissive when this doctor was 'begging' for us to militarily intervene.
Abbott came across as pious and aloof in her attitude.
I challenged her on this on Twitter, and instead she 'blocked' me!
Jeremy Corbyn's attitude is very much the same... their ideology comes before actual 'people.'
There is little point in being on the 'left' of politics if you are then aloof and lack compassion for others... it's actually crass hypocrisy when people give themselves the label "socialist" and then only apply those values when it is self-serving and convenient.

Yes, it is sad that there now has to be a competition as to who was most oppressed. And of course no ideology that is dogmatic can ever effectively deal with reality, because reality is too complex and nuanced for simplistic dogmas.
As Carl Jung stated, dogma is put up not where there is certainty (as dogma supporters claim) but where there is doubt, because it is easier to fall back on a nice, comfy, black and white dogma than to have to reassess the situation every time based on circumstances.

Boris Johnson eats a little bit of cake in an office environment, with colleagues he’s been working with throughout Covid, eating cake at a safe distance from his other colleagues, and the mainstream media and the Labour Party ousted him from government, forcing him to resign.
