- This video was made for those who wish to varnish a canoe paddle at home for the purpose of maintenance, etc. Filmed in our shop in the heart of cottage country in Muskoka, Ontario - this video highlights the techniques we use when varnishing a wood canoe paddle by hand (using a brush).
Note: We suggest that you maintain your varnish wood canoe paddle yearly, or as needed.
You will need the following tools/materials:
Vapour Barrier Mask
Gloves & Safety Glasses*
Varnish
Varsol/Spirits (clean up)
Brush (bristle or sponge)
Fine Sand Paper
Water
Clean Rag(s)
Dust Free Area
Well Ventilated Work Space
*Safety glasses are not mentioned in the video but it is recommended that you wear them while varnishing, if needed.

I just bought a couple of old paddles for 5 bucks each. I'm looking forward to refinishing them!
Thanks for the info - love the paddle colours
Great, just the info I needed, thanks
Thanks for this. My paddles are sorely in need of being revarnished and I've put if off for far too long because I just wasn't sure if a special varnish was needed, what grit of sand paper to use, how many coats to apply, etc.

You need a high quality brush those Walmart ones suck. They leave to many bubbles in the finish.
Please fix the focus on your camera.
I started with woodglut plans.
