  • WARNING, WARNING - "competing" in music , no matter in what discipline : fastest , loudest, cleanest , octavest, trilliest, jumpiest, double-notiest.... IS THE SILLIEST THING, OK ? MUSIC IS NEVER ABOUT COMPETITION
Godowsky Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Johann Strauss: No. 2, Die Fledermaus
Rightly called "one of the most complicated stunts ever written for piano", this piece probably has more notes per second, or per square centimeter of sheet music, than anything comparable. For those listeners impatient enough to "endure" a few minutes of most delightful and inventive music , and just interested in world record in speed ( LOL again ) , just scroll to @ 6:00" , fasten your seat belts  and don't complain about " speeded-up and fast forwarded" video. It happens to be live and with quite a few witnesses :)
Godowsky called his paraphrase "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Strauss' Fledermaus". It is a contrapuntal piece, though it has nothing to do with fugues or Bach &Co. It just means that he first develops Strauss' tunes by bending and misshaping them to his heart's desire, and then he combines all of them -- running independent of each other in rhythm and contours -- into just two hands (or is it six hands like in this video -- that would explain a lot ).
It is not a fun piece to play ( oh no!) -- it is a supremely fun piece to play with . Don't try it at home though :)
To put all of it in perspective , and to give us all a reality check -- here is a delightful story . Joseph Hoffmann ( who is one of my absolutely favorite pianists and heroes ) overheard Godowsky working on composing this piece , when he was his guest. Next week he performed it, every note and such -- with no mistakes. The piece was not yet written down! What can I say? OMG I can only take solace in knowing Hoffmann was a lousy sight-reader.... LOL :)
PS. Just for the record , this piece happens to be a perfect example of so-called jeu perlé technique : light , detached finger staccato technique , with each note separated like pearls on a string ...

I am so glad that Valentina didn't take the traditional competition route! She is right; music is not a competitive sport! Most competition winners are cold academic types but Valentin is a real person with a great sense of humor!

the description is not irrelevant. She may did it but she wasn't serious about it. She did it for fun. That's the big difference. Other pianist who take part in competition may claim that music isn't about competitions but they surely don't do it for fun

I think the main purpose of piano competitions is the striving for excellence. At least that is what it should be. It should not be "I can play better than the other person" but instead it should be "I shall play this better than I did when I last played it."

What's wrong with deeply appreciating and loving music, but deciding to arrange a friendly competition to see who can play the fastest? As correlated as music is with human emotions and the soul, let's not forget piano is still also a technical SKILL. As with all skills people possess different levels of it, for people who are relatively equal competition can be a great load of fun and way of bringing the best out of someone. Obviously not all aspects of music can be competed, such as beauty, character, originality, dynamics as they are all subjective, but for speed? Would it be a sin if you saw 2 people competing to see who can trill a drum the fastest? Or play 2 chromatic octaves on an oboe the quickest?

There was a pianist in 18th century who used to engage in many pianist duels. He embarrassed his opponents by turning his opponent's score upside down, playing the first few notes, improvising on them, and mocking his opponents performance. He was a bit arrogant, but turned out successful. His name was Ludwig van Beethoven...

The description above is true! I hate it when many people try to best others by learning super fast songs as if that will make them an artist! A musical artist doesn't chase for status, but they're chasing for solely music! I'm against any piano competition because the pianists are judged by their skills, but that's not music! You don't have to be good at music to love it!

Thank you for your comment regarding competition and music. I could not agree more. The notion that competition ever breeds excellence I think is the cruelist myth ever perpetrated on humanity. The ultimate logical conclusion of competition is war. My Master's thesis concentrated on the idea of refuting the legitimacy of competition, dispelling all of the fallacies upon which competition is built.
So I could not appreciate more what you say here. It is heroic act to defy commonly held beliefs. There can be nothing more courageous. And as always, the use of music to bring the point across is the perfect medium for the message.
Thanks for all that you do.
    Best,
    Robert Hieger

If I see a video of you, I almost can´t breathe, It feels like nothing else is around me, the only thing I´m listening to is your playing and the only thing I see are your fantastic hands on the keyboard.

Oh Valentina! As a young female pianist, I must admit, you played a big part in my getting back to the piano. I started playing classical pieces at the age of 11, and after a good five years of developing a very rich talent I had discovered, I abandoned it for another ten or more. Now my life is changing in so many ways... I am in love, I am going to school, and I am returning to my love of classical piano. After discovering you, Valentina, I found myself at my bench much more frequently. :)

You know, if anyone needed evidence this lady practiced 10 hrs a day for several years, this is it. Maybe her husband was jealous at one time of her enormous gift, but at some point he had to realize this is a genetic freak. There is no competition with this somehow impossible combination of Horowitz, Hoffman and a half a dozen other stratospheric artists,

This could so easily have sounded like schlock. Only a genius ... Just stop it now, OK, V? You've practiced enough now. Just blown AWAY.

A good warning! Our motivation should truly be to do nothing from rivalry/competition, indeed! The funny thing is that Solomon saw that mankind by nature tends to operate quite differently in the broader scheme of things (Eccl. 4:4) I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a man and his neighbor. This too is vanity and striving after wind. (just an interesting thought, no intent to insult here, just something to ponder.) I really enjoy your gift, Valentina! Thank you for sharing!
