- WARNING, WARNING - "competing" in music , no matter in what discipline : fastest , loudest, cleanest , octavest, trilliest, jumpiest, double-notiest.... IS THE SILLIEST THING, OK ? MUSIC IS NEVER ABOUT COMPETITION
Godowsky Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Johann Strauss: No. 2, Die Fledermaus
Rightly called "one of the most complicated stunts ever written for piano", this piece probably has more notes per second, or per square centimeter of sheet music, than anything comparable. For those listeners impatient enough to "endure" a few minutes of most delightful and inventive music , and just interested in world record in speed ( LOL again ) , just scroll to @ 6:00" , fasten your seat belts and don't complain about " speeded-up and fast forwarded" video. It happens to be live and with quite a few witnesses :)
Godowsky called his paraphrase "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Strauss' Fledermaus". It is a contrapuntal piece, though it has nothing to do with fugues or Bach &Co. It just means that he first develops Strauss' tunes by bending and misshaping them to his heart's desire, and then he combines all of them -- running independent of each other in rhythm and contours -- into just two hands (or is it six hands like in this video -- that would explain a lot ).
It is not a fun piece to play ( oh no!) -- it is a supremely fun piece to play with . Don't try it at home though :)
To put all of it in perspective , and to give us all a reality check -- here is a delightful story . Joseph Hoffmann ( who is one of my absolutely favorite pianists and heroes ) overheard Godowsky working on composing this piece , when he was his guest. Next week he performed it, every note and such -- with no mistakes. The piece was not yet written down! What can I say? OMG I can only take solace in knowing Hoffmann was a lousy sight-reader.... LOL :)
PS. Just for the record , this piece happens to be a perfect example of so-called jeu perlé technique : light , detached finger staccato technique , with each note separated like pearls on a string ...
I am so glad that Valentina didn't take the traditional competition route! She is right; music is not a competitive sport! Most competition winners are cold academic types but Valentin is a real person with a great sense of humor!
+beatnikjd She's played in several compeitions???
+debussy843 read the description. She inclines on music not being something for competition
The description is irrelevant. She did the competition thing. I'm sure all competition winners claim it's not about competing.
the description is not irrelevant. She may did it but she wasn't serious about it. She did it for fun. That's the big difference. Other pianist who take part in competition may claim that music isn't about competitions but they surely don't do it for fun
debussy843 maybe that's why they win
"WARNING, WARNING - "competing" in music , no matter in what discipline : fastest , loudest, cleanest , octavest, trilliest, jumpiest, double-notiest.... IS THE SILLIEST THING, OK ? MUSIC IS NEVER ABOUT COMPETITION"
Very good of her to say this. Most people would take it the wrong way otherwise.
absolutely ! music is music - and sport is sport - they are quite far away from each other - music is heavenly - sport is beeing practiced on earth mainly I believe.
but competition is about competition.
This isn't about music
I think the main purpose of piano competitions is the striving for excellence. At least that is what it should be. It should not be "I can play better than the other person" but instead it should be "I shall play this better than I did when I last played it."
What's wrong with deeply appreciating and loving music, but deciding to arrange a friendly competition to see who can play the fastest? As correlated as music is with human emotions and the soul, let's not forget piano is still also a technical SKILL. As with all skills people possess different levels of it, for people who are relatively equal competition can be a great load of fun and way of bringing the best out of someone. Obviously not all aspects of music can be competed, such as beauty, character, originality, dynamics as they are all subjective, but for speed? Would it be a sin if you saw 2 people competing to see who can trill a drum the fastest? Or play 2 chromatic octaves on an oboe the quickest?
Liam Clink finally another person who knows what to say.
Valentina and Bosendorfer, a beautiful match.
She is the greatest pianist of our time ! when i heard her playing for the first time, I almost stop breathing !!!
Iknow what im talking about ,i am a classical pianist myself .
valentina u are unique,Huge talent !!! I wish to se u in one of your concerts...
Mozart hated chickens! All they ever talked about was "bach, bach, bach" ... The passion of the performer and the love of the music really shows. Very well done, indeed!!! Beyond fantastic!
Probably took her 3 seconds to type the definition of this video that's why it's so long 😂
this woman always makes a dull and frustrating day a day I would not not want to miss for me...love you, Valentina...and THANKS!
Valentina Lisitsa ist definitiv wie die imponierend Bösendorfer Modell 290 Imperial Konzertflügel, eine Pianistin, die in Jeder Sinn eine sehr Vollständige und Außergewöhnliche Qualität aufweist.
Simply, "Das Beste vom Besten".
Competitions are for horses, not artists. (Bela Bartók).
I like the explanation she gave in the description.
Gabriel Fuentes not for horses either they are forced otherwise they would never preform as they are forced...musicians have a choice unless they want to be have a haulter on and lead arround on a lead
There was a pianist in 18th century who used to engage in many pianist duels. He embarrassed his opponents by turning his opponent's score upside down, playing the first few notes, improvising on them, and mocking his opponents performance. He was a bit arrogant, but turned out successful. His name was Ludwig van Beethoven...
The description above is true! I hate it when many people try to best others by learning super fast songs as if that will make them an artist! A musical artist doesn't chase for status, but they're chasing for solely music! I'm against any piano competition because the pianists are judged by their skills, but that's not music! You don't have to be good at music to love it!
Valentina you did it again!!! But i swear i saw 6 hands a a given point. That gives us mortals no hope. Love you for ever.
yeah, she cheated.. six hands, LOL
Old "Buddha" Godowsky would have loved to listen to that performance - Miss Valentina Lisitsa plays it brilliantly and collected with great talent. Marvellous.
If Johann Strauss II was alive today, I'm not sure he'd post videos with LOL in them!
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, on the other hand, was nothing but LOL, OMG and :D
EeeScape Phoenix Well said, have my like.
+EeeScape Phoenix And a healthy supply of "ikr?"
And Haydn would be the first to like his videos, and his comments would've been so hilarious!
Meanwhile, Beethoven would say, "I shan't be listening to this preposterous commentary anymore."
Imagine what Haydn and Mozart would say?
Nogdev WTF, I have to create a CHANNEL to COMMENT?ñ0po0

I have to imagine Bach would be talking mad shit on Twitter all the time.
she does it all inspiring like one of the greats of the century
Valentina on Bösendorfer is a match made in heaven!
I like how she still plays with grace even though the music is so fast. If you close your eyes and listen to the fast music, you can't imagine how she's still playing with grace.
I get sprained thumb ankles just watching you play. You were great. Thank you.
Valentina you've WOW'ed us once again. Your interpretation is so beautifully tuneful it makes us forget how difficult it is to play this piece - always the case with your playing. Thank you so much for bringing such wonderful performances into our homes. God bless you and keep you for very many more years of sharing your amazing talent with us.
The greatest pianist ever! Chapeau!
Heavenly Valentina... YOU are the BEST!!!
Wouw Valentina!!. This is extreme artistery, with a huge historic feel to it. I can listen to this again and again. You catch the spirit of pianoplaying itself. If Beethoven, Lizst, Rachmaninoff and the others can follow you - im sure they can, they are happy!!
you are very very valuable to the youtube music community, i think it's really fortunate to have someone like you here and that you portray mindsets of artistic integrity, it's really inspiring. much respect. oh and the filming and editing are pristine again.
Many people doesn't understand that this piece when performed in a performance level in front of Everybody alone is EXTREMELY pressuredly HARD. to play it alone in a studio is already hard, how much more in front of others confidently perfectly! My God i love her so much. Yes you are right, She is a huge inspiration to other pianists like us. Very valuable to the youtube community
And that right there is why you are my favorite pianist. The emotion, depth, and beauty you breathe into these pieces are absolutely awe inspiring. ♡
"one of the most complicated stunts ever written for piano" I totally get it now !!
nice work !!!
i can see why she loves bosendorfers...the richness of the sound is really just amazing, and her performance so lovely and sensitive
La Divina Valentina!!! Ya no tengo nada más que escribir. You're simply the best of all times!
Just your usual magic, dear Valentina! Thanks.
Thank you for your comment regarding competition and music. I could not agree more. The notion that competition ever breeds excellence I think is the cruelist myth ever perpetrated on humanity. The ultimate logical conclusion of competition is war. My Master's thesis concentrated on the idea of refuting the legitimacy of competition, dispelling all of the fallacies upon which competition is built.
So I could not appreciate more what you say here. It is heroic act to defy commonly held beliefs. There can be nothing more courageous. And as always, the use of music to bring the point across is the perfect medium for the message.
Thanks for all that you do.
Best,
Robert Hieger
I totally agree with you ,Ms Lisitsa. Music is meant to communicate ,something ,not to show off the musician.THank you for this engaging performance of Strauss-Godowsky.
Once again, thanks for making so much stuff freely available on UA-cam. This is the sort of playing and music and composition and just simple beauty that makes me grateful to be part of humanity.
Ms. Lisitsa, thanks for inspiring us all. Your world presence will live for many generations to come. I am quite sure the Ukrainian citizens are all so proud of what you have done & will do to make them all a proud people! May God continue to bless you is my prayer! LOL!
Her hands are as graceful as any ballerina. Delicate & Powerful in the same moment.
Thank you for giving such a beautiful melody,I'm so relaxed.
man oh man. your trills seem effortless. beautiful work!!!
who wudda thunk?A world class pianist with a great sense of humor.Kudos!
What a wonderful piece. I love the wit and invention of it.
Love the amazing and profound sound of the magnificent Bosendorfer. Thank you Valentina!
Godowsky deserves to be as famous as Liszt. His music is amazing.
Ms. Lisitsa, you make playing these pieces look completely effortless. Every note, purposefully placed. What an incredible joy.
Such brilliant playing. Audience didn’t really appreciate what an achievement this performance was. Outstanding
Wow, thank you for sharing you wonderful talent . Sitting here in Florida getting ready to start my day with coffee and I'm blown away . Thank you, Thank you and again thank you.
I could watch this all day, and the next day, and...
I wish I played the piano before I hit the age of 5 I'm 14 and have been playing the piano for 7 months and still thing I will be able to do this one day..... Something like this , it is so beautiful thank you Valentina because you make me feel better when I think something is hopeless ;)
Ms. Lisista, you make playing these pieces look completely effortless. Every note, purposefully placed. What an incredible joy.
Dear Valentina,
I think you´re the most inspiring pianist of all times. You play even the most difficult pieces ever written, all without any major mistakes! If I see a video of you, I almost can´t breathe, It feels like nothing else is around me, the only thing I´m listening to is your playing and the only thing I see are your fantastic hands on the keyboard.
Keep on recording video's, everyone has to be aware of this grade of playing the piano!
Willem vd Rijken,
The Netherlands
She even has a faster version of this while she was young on her CD version raw without edit. it was even more terrifying of her
Thanks God to give us such a magical pianist! I do love her
Spasibo Bolshoi na vas zamyechanye k eto music, gaspaja Lisitsia. Your commentary on this piece in itself is quite fascinating and interesting to read, and it helps a lot in appreciating your performance of this amazing piece.
I think everyone here has expressed my sentiments about the piece and your interpretation of it (that is, fabulous). I just wanted to add that the people who filmed and edited did a spectacular job. Much better than most classical concerts I usually see.
You've won the competition to be my favorite pianist.
Brilliant mind + Hand coordination = a beautiful piece
Oh Valentina! As a young female pianist, I must admit, you played a big part in my getting back to the piano. I started playing classical pieces at the age of 11, and after a good five years of developing a very rich talent I had discovered, I abandoned it for another ten or more. Now my life is changing in so many ways... I am in love, I am going to school, and I am returning to my love of classical piano. After discovering you, Valentina, I found myself at my bench much more frequently. :)
Always loved this, "stunt" or not, and a great performance of this always gives me that giddy laughter....I had that all throughout here!
You know, if anyone needed evidence this lady practiced 10 hrs a day for several years, this is it. Maybe her husband was jealous at one time of her enormous gift, but at some point he had to realize this is a genetic freak. There is no competition with this somehow impossible combination of Horowitz, Hoffman and a half a dozen other stratospheric artists,
This could so easily have sounded like schlock. Only a genius ... Just stop it now, OK, V? You've practiced enough now. Just blown AWAY.
That Piano sounds so Gooood!! Beautiful Performance.
MUSIC IS NEVER ABOUT COMPETITION - says the best pianist of the world... ha!!!
The pianist is always in a competition with himself to get the listener that much closer to the original composer.
Great performance!
I love you Valentina! you have a fan from Chile. =)
AMAZING...I love it! So interesting...so unique! Thank you Valentina.
Good Lord! I can go to bed now! Thank you! Love your work.
Valentina ,I as an Artist paint your portrait ,so you are my pianist hear to .you are uniqe in the world 🌹👌❤😍
Neskutečné!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SUPER jednička!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
0 dislikes, just how it's supposed to be! go on, maestra! your peformances are astounding
above me is a great example of a person that still thinks a perfect video like this will still have no dislikes
The ideal performance of this piece!
I don't like telling people what to do. I will put forth, though, that Ms. Lisitsa has both the taste and technique to record my foolish favorite piano piece: the Wagner/Liszt paraphrase of the Tannhauser Overture. I think if she ever wanted to record it, it would be the most beautiful performance of that difficult piece ever recorded. One can hope.
Great rhythmic grace and flow...! She's be a good jazz player too I bet.
She seriously deserves a medal for that.
Mrs. Val Japan in the middle of a typhoon!
Thank you for your uploading this pleasant music.
It is the performance that you're very elegant, and is extremely wonderful.
It is music to be able to dance with beauty happily.
As for the performance of your thing, the expression that is very delicate by the sound such as the jewel is splendid.
I listened to this music by the animation of the salon concert of Salzburg, but spirit are reflected very much. Early if you can Please come to Japan!!
Valentina you are my favorite pianist! I love your music and the way you play...I think you are the best in the world :)
At one point I begin wondering whether her hands were on those keys at all. But the magic keeps flowing.
Great. After Scarbo, however, nothing surprises me any more:)
Much more interesting than the techniques is the musicality. In spite of all pianistic brilliance the joy about the music is shining through.
Marvelous Godowsky! ... now i imagine Valentina doin' Kunsterleben someday...
Beautifully and flawlessly played as always, Maestro
La perfección hecha Valentina, me chifla tu música virtuosa, bravoooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
Such an effortless execution played by a master...
It's a little know fact that Godowsky was a three armed mutant with a 2nd fully functional left arm and hand.
Ms.Val! The performance of the palace of Salzburg was shocking, too, and the performance of you was good. I think that both are elegant, and the performance in this Beethoven-Haus is splendid.
I think that you are the modern best pianist.
The world is fastest, and it will be a maximum that you return comment. (LOL)
What a brilliant piece of music.
This piece is absolutely amazing, be it a speed competition or whatever.THANK YOU for posting it!
beautiful and jaw dropping every time
From your description, I went from reading about Joesph Hoffmann to Anton Rubinstein to Frederic Chopin. Although it did help that Chopin is my favorite composer. Thank you for the inspiration.
i love love love it !!
i really hope you can come to hong kong and have a concert!!!!!!!!!
please comeeeeeeeee!!!! Orz
Thanks, and also very nice warnings about competition... :)
Her roll-offs look as beautiful as they sound.
Perfect, amazing, funny and joyful!! You always make my soul fly with your piano!! Thank you!
Godowsky's pieces terrifies me and you made this piece look so easy.
....and for it to still make 'sense' to my ear.... Amazing...thank you so much! :-)
Amazing, I must have watched this 5 times in the past 2 days.
@ValentinaLisitsa I live in Alabama. But I am willing to travel to see you! I am a huge fan! :)
wonderful.....thank you for sharing !!!
"fasten your seat belt" seriously, when the video ended i was with my face right on the screen. amazing!
Gosh what a piece.. Thanks for putting up such lovely descriptions to the videos, I can appreciate the music much more after reading :)
She deserves far more views
I loved your description about the video :)
A good warning! Our motivation should truly be to do nothing from rivalry/competition, indeed! The funny thing is that Solomon saw that mankind by nature tends to operate quite differently in the broader scheme of things (Eccl. 4:4) I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a man and his neighbor. This too is vanity and striving after wind. (just an interesting thought, no intent to insult here, just something to ponder.) I really enjoy your gift, Valentina! Thank you for sharing!
Delightful Valentina
I watch this video, look at my fingers with a shake of the head and think 'this is sick' :-) pretty cool performance!!!
and that's why competing is useless. how could you improve on perfection. Amazed. Really so much in this performance. Seeing her playing live has now made the bucket list....
