  • Back to basics! Nothing too crazy, just going through the PowerApps dropdown control in nerdy detail to answer a bunch of common questions I get when using this critical control. We do have some fun with a complex collection along the way also. Enjoy PowerApps Cascading dropdowns a couple of different ways.

    Thank you, Shane, I try to watch all of your videos, even basic concepts like these, help us to improve our practices. Sometimes due to lack of experience, we use a lot of intermediate variables and excessive processing for things that can be made in an easy and simple way... Sometimes I look back at older apps I've made and almost feel shame for my older self... 😅 Thank you for your hard work and sharing these tutorials, keep it up!

    I have watched several of your videos, which by the way are really good and informative, I have also subscribed to your channel bc of this.

    I have a question for you bc I am getting closer to finding a resolution by combining a bunch of your videos into one but I haven’t gotten there yet. I think what I want to do is doable but I am very new to Power Apps, as in this is my first time new.
    I have been given the task to create a directory of transportation vendors for our users to use. I need to be able to give the user the ability to search by state (I guess dropdown) then by county then by zip code then by mode of transport, and in the results I need them to be able to see the data cards for each vendor that meets the above said search/filtered criteria. They will need to be able to see each vendor that matches the criteria’s name, phone number, email, mode of transport, if they can transport COVID patients, if they are active or not and the vendors hours of operation.
    I thought about using the dropdown and cascading feature but the amount of data that needs to be in the selection field is enormous like it would mean entering in 100s of options, especially with the zip codes as this is nationwide. Is there a different way to do this or a different way to get the options in the app? Do you have videos that would help me be able to accomplish this? Also do I create a gallery first and then do the Screens or where do I start? Again very, very new at this.
    I do need to use SharePoint as the data source since our 100s of transportation vendor profiles have been loaded in there.

    Hi @shaneYoung - Please can you help answer this question for me? I've exhausted Google, and I think the answer in it's standard form, is no.
    Three SharePoint lists for three levels of an organisation. Let's say:
    National Teams List -> Regional Teams List -> Individual Team Lists
    National List just has 1 column with names,
    Regional has two columns, 1 with names, 1 with lookup for National
    Individual has two columns, 1 with names, 1 with lookup for Regional
    In the canvas app I would like to produce three cascading dropdowns that will only show options for based off of the previous option. However, it does not seem possible to filter based off of a dropdown column in SharePoint.
    Is this the case?
    Thanks :)

    • @ShanesCows
      @ShanesCows  2 роки тому +1

      You would set the Default of the Dropdown to be a variable. Then you would set the value of the variable OnSelect of the button. Power Apps is Declarative based not Imperative so you can’t directly change a control.

      @@ShanesCows Hi Shane, first of all I wish you all the best for you and your family for this new year 2021 !!! I saw the viedo you advised to me but this one don't bring me the solution. As explained, the filter of the dropdown work well but even if I select an item in the list, the update don't work at the time of the subit of the form. The updating should update a lookup field in a sharepoint list adn I expect that is the problem. In the update setting of the datacard, I am not able to put "Dropdown1.selected.value" because "value" is not available. After "Dropdown1.selected." powerapps propose the name of all field of the sharepoint list where the record should be created. But if I choose the field where I have to post the value of the dropdown1, the formulas become not valid. I expect I have to work with the ID of the idem choosen in the dropdown1 but I don't know how :-(
