All scandinavian countries are so beautiful! You have the beautiful danish flat lands, the beautiful Swedish west coast(wich might be one of the most beautiful in europe or even the world) and all the mighty mountins, beautiful fjords and a overal beautiful west coast in Norway! Really Love Scandinavia, three really beautiful countries!

    • @TheBarser
      @TheBarser 7 років тому +14

As a danish person I wouldn't really call our country beautiful. It is not very spectacular compared to many other countries, though I do have a soft spot for the west coast beach of Jutland.

    This video... THIS F*CKING VIDEO!!
Deserves every god damn like it can get. Never have i seen a video related to Scandinava THIS accurate!
I've myself been studying Scandinavian history, and I thought i knew it all, but NOPE!
Sure, the quality of the map and the fact it shows modern borders is in my opinion a letdown.. as well as the fact you didn't include Iceland or The Faroe Islands.
But at the same time it makes up for it by absolutely blowing my mind with the amount of research you've done for this video.
I had no idea there were minor "petty kingdoms" or whatever in the sapmi area between Sweden and Norway. or that there was that many minor kingdoms in Finnmark, or that Sweden shared tax evations with Novgorod, i thought just norway did that!
And you, YOU my good sir, managed to do what very few people have done correctly regarding Norway, and that is Norwegian *Jemtland*. You are one of the few who got it correct, in-fact, it's more correct than the border shown in EmperorTigerstars "History of Europe" Video! (though, not the same great quality as in *Potaoes Video Mapping tm*)
This is the type of video you could show in a classroom, it's that accurate. I myself praise it for it's accuracy and the extensive research more than critisising the obvious setbacks (mentioned earlier) so all in all GREAT F*CKING JOB with this video, far preceded anything I could've expected,
Dare I say it's the best "History of Scandinavia" out there "Yes", Does this make up for the countable mistakes in the "History of the Nordic Nations" video. *"ABSO-F*CKING-LUTLY!"*
Continue with researching like this. It clearly shows you've spent a lot of time for the sake of this video, and I can always appreciate when someone puts effort into their videos!!

    • @spareaim9

Scandinavia is usually referred as Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Also Finland, Åland islands, Faraoe islands and Iceland are kind of Scandinavia.

    • @WeeneyTweeney

Spare Aim I am Norwegian! So of course I know "Scandinavia" is only three countries, but that's not why I wanted them featured.
I wanted the video to feature them as colonial possessions, so we could see the terretory they held westwards. Then not include them after Norway was forced into another f*cking union with Sweden or something like that.
Apparently, I was wrong for including that. And again, I am Norwegian! So *I know* "Scandinavia" is only three countries!

Scandinavia as a whole should have been one country man. We used to be feared warriors and respected traders back in the viking era. Even the church demonized us by creating the myth that vikings have horns like the devil.
I'm not saying we should be warmongerers. But i do wish we could play a bigger role in the world

For a thousand years the major powers of Europe has shit on us Scandinavians because we were divided. Instead of fighting our foes in the east and south we fought eachother, our brothers and sisters. If only Scandinavia would of been united...
Today, we would likely be the most successful country in Europe, with Danish agriculture, Swedish innovation, Norwegian oil & fish industry and Finnish will and determination to overcome any obstacle.

I think a Scandinavian or Nordic Union would be a better idea than the European Union.
    - The countries are culturally, economically, politically and even linguistically very similar.
    - We´d have approximately the 11th (17th if you measure in PPP) largest economy in the world.
    - The population would be almost 27 million people.
    - We´d have a stronger military (less dependent on NATO for protection), more influence in world politics and a more effective economy overall.
    - A common currency would work better than the euro, since workers are more willing to move between Nordic countries than within EU.
After Brexit, it´s certainly a possibility that the European Union will completely break down in the future. It´s a project with many upsides, but also som major fault lines. If that happens, a Nordic Union in an unstable post-EU world might be a good idea.

Because Denmark existed in Roman times in Skåne, and then expanded westwards. This video is completely wrong regarding Denmark. It puts the Heruli as Danes, and the Danes as Jutes. Denmark and Sweden are the oldest - simply because Norway isnt a continuation of a kingdom, but a fusion of many petty kingdoms into one. Had one Norwegian kingdom seized all of Norway in pre-christian times, then it would have been as old (fex by all of Norway becoming Hålogaland).

Norway did rule for a brief time over Denmark under the rule of Magnus the Good, who died while preparing an invasion of England.
Also, I have no idea why it's considered a union with Sweden as the leading part. He did descend from a Swedish noble because the Norwegian king had no male heir, but he was raised, born and ruled from Norway.

Haakon vi of Norway. The second one. he was born and raised in Norway and inherited the Norwegian throne from his father who granted was the throne of Sweden. and his brother Eric ruled Sweden. he had a few strife's with him but eventually his brother would die and Hakoon would proclaim himself lord of Sweden until the swedes formally elected him. He styled himself as king of Norway and Sweden. and he ruled his kingdom from Oslo. He was eventually banished from Sweden as the Nobility revolted against him and he was replaced by King Albert or Albrekt av Mecklenburg. The first union was more or less Swedish it is worth mentioning that Magnus IV was born and raised in Norway not that it really matters. but the Second union was firmly a Norwegian union over Sweden.

It would be nice with a tighter union I think, even with Finland. I live in the north of Sweden and I think this part of the country has more in common with norway and finland than the south wich resembles denmark and the rest of europe more. The north of Sweden is like a colony or a bank of resources for stockholm and stuff. A great union would even out all differences maybe? But you know, denmark would have to close their gross pigfarms and start making wine instead, norway change their oilrigs to windpower and finland I dont know shit about. We swedes I guess will have to de-americanise our culture and sharpen up a bit.

In this one, however, one small thing is overlooked: After the civil war in 1918, Finland gained control of the city of Petsamo (today Pechenga) which gave them access to the Barents Sea. And they kept this corridor until the end of World War II, with a short interruption during the Winter War in 1940. Love from a Norwegian historian.

There is something wrong, there is no history of "denmark" being whiped out in 1019-1035. Where did you get your sources from? also why did both sweden and Denmark get "erased" in that time?

The irony of this video is the songs are Sámi peoples songs
    - people who were and are occupied by the Scandinavians.
Later also the Finns joined owning their lands.
Roughly the areas where you see Sweden & Novgorod/Muscovy (later Russia)
or Norway & Novg./Musc., and Finnmark.
It's like putting Native American songs on a video showing the history of the US on a map.
    As tactful.
(I'm not Sámi, but a Finn.)

I'm curious, what sources do you have on the kingdoms between 200-1.000 AD? Very little is known from the earliest history of Scandinavia and a lot of it are myths and stories. The story of how Sweden was created for example was during the battle of Bråvalla in the 8th century, and the first sources telling us about this is from the 13th century so historians aren't even sure this battle ever took place. In the stories also they speak about hundreds of thousands of men fighting alongside gods and giants.
