Hi, Evan! Congratulations on the purchase of your new log splitter. You really needed it. A couple of videos ago your axe was just bouncing off the log.
I bought the same unit a few weeks ago and have split and stacked over 5 cord already with my grand sons. Iam very glad to own my Black Diamond. One of my favorite tools.
Just came across this video Evan, I fitted a tow hitch and tow a non-plated trailer, and load straight into the trailer. I can unhitch the trailer and push it to the wood stack. Also use a sack barrow to move large rounds saves the back. Thanks from New Zealand
I bought a black diamond 3 years ago. We have split over 100 cord so far with no problems. The only down side is, it doesn't like to start when the temp. get below 20 degrees. Enjoy it.
Great video and thumbs up ! To save yourself a bunch of work, take the splitter into the woods and cut, split and throw it into the tractor bucket or trailer then take it to the stacking area. That way all the garbage stays in the woods. Looks like a great addition to the homestead !
I have the exact same splitter I use it mostly in horizontal mode Get a piece of 2x4or 2x6 to set out when using in vertical e mode so you don’t have to hold rounds up till wedge hits and starts to split
Congrats on the acquisition. I know you've been wanting one for a while. It will greatly ease your workload. It was cutting through those logs like butter. Onward and upward. That's another tick off your list.
Great buy!!! It will save you so much time and hard work too! We rented one this year and it was fun to use. We split a lot of wood in 4 hrs, I just moved the truck when the piles got in the way too! Took me 2 days to get it all moved and stacked!!! Well worth the $90 rental. I bought a 10 ton hand powered splitter for $100(Harbor Freight) and it does cedar kindling pretty well, but I cant split oak with it. I would put your yard trailer by the splitter and put the wood on it as you split! I dislike double handling!! LOL
I always found the best way to split Elm is to leave it bucked in blocks for a year, then split it and then season it for the summer before burning that winter. Always worked for me.
For elm, wait till it’s frozen to split then it won’t be near as stringy and will split way easier. I split mine by hand this way and it’s a game changer.
I have heard people say that these Black Diamond splitters are difficult to start in the cold months. Have you had any issues with this? I am considering buying one of these.... Thanks so much for your time.
Pretty much all of them are. Always run the carb out of fuel when you're done. When your ready to use again. Full choke hafe throttle. After fire up turn to hafe choke and let run about 15 to 20 seconds than no choke and your good to go!
@@creeksidefirewood8937 I appreciate your reply. A lot of people that make Firewood videos don't reply when questions are asked so I appreciate you taking the time to fill me in. I have actually borrowed a friends splitter and it's this exact model. What's the chance of that happening. So I will use your advice and let you know how it does. Thanks again and have a Blessed Day!!
You are splitting the wood into small pieces. Is it not quite dry? I usually split into larger pieces last longer in the stove. Very impressive splitter, good buy, sure easier on the back
I found this year, that I didn't have enough smaller pieces when starting a fire. So I am trying to have a better mix of sizes. This winter had a long mild period, where we would let the fire burn out, then restart each day. So lots of kindling and smaller logs were helpful.
Nice rig, I would suggest you get a wheel barrel and put it next to you so you don't have to pick things up twice. Additionally, I know this was a test but I wouldn't split on your nice driveway in the future. Pick an area off the road close to where you plan to stack it. Another great video!
@@CountryViewAcres Look at it this way, you got a topic for a new video. "Don't split wood on your driveway unless you have a license to operate a rake." ;)
I'm gonna buy me one of the black diamond, was looking into the champion but nah! There's more reviews/comments on the black diamond, I'm glad I found your video. Thank you
Suggestion, please, you need to use safety goggles, and when necessary, ear plugs or noise reduction headphones. I could just see you with a huge splinter sticking out of your eye. Nice log splitter. Very much enjoy your videos and watching the progression of your homestead.
I added a tongue jack to mine to make it free standing. I learned to run mine vertically only. I gathered multiple rounds around the splitter, sat on one and wheeled the others into the splitter in turn. It'll help save your shoulders, back, hips and knees. Never lift if you can do otherwise!
You might also try this: don't tear logs in half once split then individually re-split each half; spin them 90* and spit them again. It saves work and you get 4 pcs with less effort. And, I kept a bottle of motor oil around, one with a pour spout with a very narrow opening, to lube the slide the splitter blade runs on to keep it operating smoothly. Just a very light coating periodically helps. It will collect grime so a rag to clean it before adding more oil is useful, too. Enjoying the vids, esp thosea round construction like the fence, barn, etc. Looking forward to more.
I forgot to add this. When splitting stringy material, run the splitter all the way down. Tearing them apart like you were doing is hard on the arms and shoulders. You have a hydraulic splitter to take the load off your body, let it do what it's supposed to do. When in your 70's like I am, you'll be glad you did.
Does your unit have the Black handled Lever under the Choke Lever & Do you know what it is for? It doesn't seem to do anything in either position on mine...
We got a 37 ton wood splitter I use to do it by hand it was back breaking work I will say but now I just use the splitter so much easy but I'm glad you got one thro be alot Easier on you and looks like a nice one to
The only problem I had is the hydraulic oil breather/district broke. Not sure how it broke, if a log dropped on it. But other than that no problems. Splits everything I run through it.
Nice video. I bought one of these a month or so ago and have 2 cords through it already with no issues. Only problem I had was topping off the hydraulic fluid even though RKing claimed to have it full. Lol.
Lines were probably empty, or probably air locked. Run control back and forth before splitting, then shut off and check oil a few times. Top off as needed. Goes for a brand new engine as well or after an oil change. check and double check. And stay away from ethanol fuels! Bad for small engines and 2 cycle engines. Draws moisture from the air. Small engine mechanics love your business, when you use ethanol fuels. Use premium with NO ethanol!
Always enjoy your projects. Do you have a small trailer for the ATV? Sure would be convenient to throw that split wood into it & drag it where you need it. The night you were dragging the generator through the soft mud I was cringing, thinking how easily I could have handled that job with my 4 wheeler & lawn trailer.
I don't own a 4 wheeler, I borrow my father in laws in the summer. Hopefully in the future we will purchase a 4 wheeler or side by side. I also have been thinking about modifying my rear pallet forks on the tractor, and build a 3 sided box to haul firewood or tools. That would carry the generator around.
Oh, I thought I'd seen a 4 wheeler in your barn. I was really hurting for you that night your power was out. Out here we use ATVs for getting around in wet ground after irrigation systems have covered it. Way better than wading sticky mud up to your ankles. @@CountryViewAcres
Not a big fan of the splitting maul anymore so I purchased a new wood splitter the only thing I would say I would have parked it a little closer to your woodpile LOL
Suggestion: the large pieces, put then in the bucket of tractor set it level with the wings of splitter, It is much easer to handle. AND it save the back from trying to hold log up and while bring head of splitter down on log.
I had some 3/4" plywood, made a raised pad to roll logs onto and cut out to match base. Works great and logs are level and far less hassle to hold in place.
The cutter needs to be able to extend all the way until it touches the stop plate! Other than that nice splitter. Swap that engine for a Honda or better and it’ll have less vibration Briggs motor is good but not best
The biggest problem with all of these splitters is the cheap tire and axle assembly. They should ideally have 15 inch tires and heavier axles. At least 12 inch minimum tire and wheel. Also having the tire right in the work area really sucks.
Black diamond is the worst log splitter I have ever seen! I have a 30 ton black diamond that leaks everywhere, motor shakes like crazy and the motor will lock up from hydraulic pressure. The control valve will stick and not pop in neutral and kill the motor as well. Save your money and purchase a different brand.

Yea, it is amazing how wood chips and bark ends up on the ground where you split wood.

A log splitter is one of the best investments when you have a farm. Saves on your back, arms and hands splitting wood by hand.
Just purchased an benchmark. Same as this one just its red . Works great

Good point. The driveway is covered with small piece of wood now. I realized it was a bad idea afterwards.

Try a bit of Australian box wood.😏That wood is very soft looking.

So far in 2.5 years, the only thing that has broke is the oil fill cap. I hit it or it broke from vibration. But so far, It is still running good,
I just had a champion delivered to my house with water in the top end of the motor. Getting my money back.

We need the throttle assembly. Does anyone know where to get one? Thanks in advance.
oh, im back. i sit on a large chunk when splitting verticle and use loader to keep pile shoved close to splitter and dont have to get up and down.
I always take my old oil and put it on the shaft and the runner before you split.
I added a tongue jack to mine to make it free standing. I learned to run mine vertically only. I gathered multiple rounds around the splitter, sat on one and wheeled the others into the splitter in turn. It'll help save your shoulders, back, hips and knees. Never lift if you can do otherwise!

Anywhere I can pick up a log cradle for a 30 ton Black Diamond splitter? I've been looking online and can't find much.
Does your unit have the Black handled Lever under the Choke Lever & Do you know what it is for? It doesn't seem to do anything in either position on mine...
Yeah it is the fuel shut off on mine.

put a chunk of firewood between the plate and partiallt split elm to cure the stringy problem, i like metallica and ac/dc when i split.
If you heat with wood, you need a splitter.
Does anyone know if you can use a 4 way wedge on these log splitters?
Hello, are you still satisfied with your black diamond log splitter?
The only problem I had is the hydraulic oil breather/district broke. Not sure how it broke, if a log dropped on it. But other than that no problems. Splits everything I run through it.
@@CountryViewAcres thanks for the feedback.
When you've been splitting wood with an ax, that thing is the cat's meow!
Needs a big base when upright. Might be good idea to weld or bolt a plate steel on base.
Yea it needs something, so the wood sits flat.
Yea I have that problem to the logs don't sit flat on the base and it sucks if they are bigger logs you gotta hold it in place to get a straight cut
Yea, I may make something to help with that. I am starting to get some ideas.
Country View Acres hope I helped with idea. Just make sure it thick bolt or weld. Have scrap medal laying around ?
I think I will try something more simple first. I hate to start welding on a new splitter. But it does need something.

Nice video. I bought one of these a month or so ago and have 2 cords through it already with no issues. Only problem I had was topping off the hydraulic fluid even though RKing claimed to have it full. Lol.
Had to add hydro oil to mine after local farm and fleet "filled it". They fill the tank but I think the lines are empty and fill up when started.
