Bolton fan here, we've spent 73 years in the top flight. Just over 10 years ago we were competing for the top 6/8 in the Premier League, I watched us knock out Athletico Madrid in the Uefa Cup and draw to Bayern Munich away. Last year we played in League Two competing against Exeter City and Morecambe for promotion. Everton are not too big to go down, no club is. As was the case with us, Blackburn, Newcastle, Forest, Villa and many many more.
Really like Bolton back in the day They had a habit of pickinf up old players that other clubs thought were finished. And they performed well too. Campo, Okocha, Borgetti, Giannakopolus and Nakata to name a few. Hope they can come back one day.
@@SSEnrich yes but that was their downfall. All those class players retired at nearly the same time and there was no quality coming through to replace them. They ended up dropping like a stone. Good while it lasted!
Forest are one of the best examples. Can't be many sides that have won a European Cup (let alone two, back to back), a title and league cups before getting relegated. Agree that other teams have bigger stadiums and fan bases, but only Forest have the dubious honour of having such a fall from grace (thankfully they're in promotion contention this year, just hope they don't blow it!)
Not to mention selling their possibly their best ever striker rooney to mancs possibly just to spite lfc 🤣instead of tying him down and building a good team around him
For Everton it's been a slow decline - one of the original "Big Five" back when the Premiership first started, but won nothing since 1995 - been in and out of relegation fights and European qualification multiple times since then - but since the new owner came in it's been a slow and steady decline as money has been wasted and the fan's have hounded good managers out of the club. They aren't the biggest to go down when you consider both Nottingham Forest & Aston Villa won the European Cup in the 80's - those two club's stand as evidence that no club is too big to go down. But to have held on to a place in the top flight for so long, and considering where they started when the Premiership was launched (& that even as recent as last season were being talked of being granted additional voting rights under "Project Big Picture" for being one of the few ever present clubs in the Premiership) - and considering the manager's they've had and money they spent in recent years only to arrive in this position - this feels bigger somehow. They are in this position due to underlying financial / ownership / management / recruitment / coaching issues - every part of the club from top to bottom feels mismanaged - this feels like a club in decline that could be looking towards a Leeds or Man City like implosion that they may never recover from in my lifetime. It feels like this is going to be a bigger fall, not necessarily because of the size of the club, but also where the club may ultimately end up before things start to stabilise / improve again.
The 90's - bar the surprise FA win - was pretty rough for EFC after their 80's heyday, as you say lots of relegation scraps and circling the drain. You're maybe a bit harsh on what Moyes achieve with them during his long tenure post millennium. That was certainly an incline for them rather than decline.
I feel like when Villa went down that one season, that kind of felt pretty big considering the players they did have and where they were finishing before they went down
I think this would be a lot bigger, looks at Everton's squad and the money they have spent. Would have to have a firesale in the summer just to keep afloat.
During Klopp's reign at Liverpool (must be 7 seasons now), Everton in that time have spent nearly £20mil LESS than Liverpool (around 600mil for Liverpool, 580mil Everton). They're in such an almighty mess, whereas Liverpool's receuitment has been more or less spot on.
It probably wasn’t a shock but Villa (from an Albion fan). They’re a bigger club than people give them credit for. Albion & Wolves are also bigger historically than given credit for although not as big as the Villa of course.
when i saw the title, i instantly though "Blackburn, Leeds, Newcastle" before the vid loaded, and your comment was top, lol... yeah those were bigger clubs at the time EASY!
Why do people say Leeds are massive club. 3 titles, same as Huddersfield. 1 FA cup, 1 less than Bury. 1 League Cup, same as Swindon. Dont sound like a massive club me.
What makes Everton more standout to the likes of Newcastle, Villa, Sunderland etc is that the latter clubs flirted with relegation in the seasons prior to going down. This inevitably saw the better players leave for better clubs, so when they did finally go down it wasn't a huge shock. The stunner for Everton is that they have fallen apart in the space of about 18 months and they still have all those big earners on the books, which makes it look even worse. Needless to say, what all clubs had/have in common is a rotten core. That can quickly be solved in the Championship if they go down. If they stay up, it could take a while and we may see Everton deteriorate over the next couple of seasons until the inevitable happens. Personally, I think Everton getting relegated now, having a good clear-out and getting back up in a season or 2, into the new stadium, would be best for them. The last thing they want to do is hang on for a couple seasons and then christen the new stadium with a relegation.
@@notKevinFeige I personally blame Benitez more as he came unwelcomed to the club, didn't do too bad granted but proceeded to disagree with one of our best full backs and sell him before he could be sacked. I'm not big on conspiracy's but him selling Digne to Gerard was wrong.
Err... no. Newcastle going down was nothing to do with players leaving the club in the preceding seasons. In both cases it was the appointment of shambolic managers in Kinnear and McClaren.
@Liverpool FC Leeds isn't bigger than Everton but they had more recent success. Leeds going down was massive at the time. It is the only example that is comparable to Everton.
Leeds after being in Champions League Semi Final, to the following season going down. Blackburn Rovers who have won the Premier League going down. Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle all going down was a surprise, what Everton to were in the 70s and 80s makes it unthinkable them going down. Also the fact along with Liverpool, Tottenham, Man United, Chelsea and Arseanl, the only 6 clubs never to be relegated from the Premier League. The fear for Everton is what happened to Leeds, Forest and Blackburn. Leeds to a long time to come back up, Forest and Blackburn are still in the Championship, there is no guarantee that you can come back up. To be fair with the owner, they could spend more than all the other clubs but still might not get them promoted. The Champinshipis very hard to get out of, the also play most times at the weekend and in the week, so 3 games every 7 days.
Blackburn were considered big when they went down, they'd won the PL title Leeds were considered big when they went down, they were full of big players and a period when they were challenging for the PL title Are Everton really bigger than those two? There's an argument that they're not. Always been a club who's flirted with 4th place and a cup here or there, but wouldn't say them going down would be as big as when the other two did. Maybe it's because people have been used to Everton being in the PL for so long that it would seem like they're the biggest club to go down. Perhaps some weighting should be given to how long they've stayed there rather than what they've done in the same time. Debate could rage on for days....
Blackburn were never considered big because they were never big. Uncle Jack bought them the title. Leeds had to get rid of all their players because they gambled on continued CL qualification. Everton are bigger than them two by a long way. 9 league titles to Leeds 3. 5 FA cups to 1. Everton - 31,738 ave gate v Leeds - 25,768 over their histories.
Leeds, apart from Howed Wilkinson champions in 90s, won all their major trophies between 65 and 75. Their status as a big club is debatable. spent nearly 50% of their history outside the top flight.
Just the fact that other teams were able to get millions out of Everton for Iwobi, Walcott, Godfrey, Mina, Klaasen, etc. Check out their net transfer amount each season. They never made profit. They bought players and let them go after their contract ended. It could turn out very bad for them if they go down. And it could be several years before they could come back to PL. Just like what happened with Leeds. As a Liverpool fan, I feel sorry for them. Hope they show some fight and stay up.
Well if we are talking Premier League, Nottingham Forest in 92/93, Blackburn in 98/99 (just 4 years after winning the title), Leeds In 03/04, and Newcastle in 08/09 are the 4 biggest shock relegations so far. But if we are talking all time then United getting relegated in the 70’s is probably the biggest shock relegation of all time.
@@Rooms-guy as a west ham fan who travels I always see west ham and Newcastle shirts, they are a v big club, no point denying it, they always have been.
@@Rooms-guy Newcastle have broken world transfer records. Do small clubs do that? 20 years ago Newcastle were the 5th richest club in the world, ahead of Barcelona and AC Milan, Liverpool were 10th and arsenal were 13th. Theyre currently the richest. Newcastle have champions League wins over Barcelona and juventus. Do Everton? Everton have never even played in the champions League for example.
Manchester United in the seventies. When Sunderland were relegated for the first time ever in 1958 they’d had the longest unbroken top flight run of any side and had been league champions 6 times. So yes.
Yes, and it was a lovely little backheal goal from Denis Law against his old side that sealed their fate on the 27th April 1974, it featured on Match of the Day
What makes Everton going down the most shocking in history is Everton have the Second longest streak of years without being relegated. They haven't been relegated since 1950-51 Season.
Exactly this. Villa and Forest have been relegated and their fans have been used to it, if Everton go down, it will be a total shock for the club and fanbase, they may not come back for a while…a shame, I always liked Everton as a club
@@oufc90 Everton have just 2 more league titles than Villa, but less domestic cup trophies and no European Cup. So not a bigger or more successful club than Villa overall.
@@temporaryuseraccount0012 I’d put Everton, City, Leeds and Villa in the same category, similar Tottenham and Sunderland. All have won 10+ major trophies and played in front of big crowds historically. City’s average league position from 1894-2008 is 6th in the top division (done pre takeover). Villas is 5th, Everton’s is about 3rd. Leeds are further down at about 12th but they had big highs. Forest are about 28th because other than the one league title and two European Cups, there history has been in the lower tiers.
Leeds United (2003-04) and Newcastle United (2008-09) are undoubtedly the two biggest shock relegations in EPL history. If Everton were to go down it will certainly match, or be very close to matching, the two mentioned above. Very similar circumstances as well, with poor recruitment and long term off the field issues eventually catching up with them. I hope they stay up but with Burnley now starting to gradually grind out wins and with Everton facing a tougher end of season run in, it isn't looking good.
Aston Villa very similar to Everton when we went down. Difference is, our owners had turned off the tap and we were a shambles. Everton on the other hand, have spent a tonne of .money, so it's bizarre.
Exactly and it now appears that they are in a similar position to the one Villa were in, although Villas decline happened over a period of years. Villa as a club and the fans had to accept, Everton will need to do the same as giants fall. Their fans cannot argue that they're too big to go down because nothing suggests that is a reality currently. and they're no bigger than Villa or Newcastle although the latter has won far less. Wish them luck
West Ham 2002/03 was the biggest imo. Everybody said they were too good to go down. Full of stars like Joe Cole, Defoe, Carrick, Glen Johnson, David James, Di Canio, Lee Bowyer etc. Months before until they were relegated, it was almost said it couldn't happen. But like the Titanic, they were not unsinkable :D Dropped with a staggering 42 points as well, with Bolton surviving on 44 points.
Bigger club is a debate but in terms of squad I think both Newcastle relegations were pretty shocking when you see what individual players had achieved before and after The first relegation you had Michael Owen, Jose Enrique (went on to Liverpool), Damien Duff (was a key part at the start of Abramovich’s reign and Premier League winner), Nicky Butt (won just about everything with Man Utd), Alan Smith (regular in the Champions League for Leeds and Man Utd and won silverware with Man Utd), Jonás Gutierrez (Argentina international), Mark Viduka (Australia international, premier league veteran with Champions League experience) and Obafemi Martins (former Inter Milan wonder kid with Champions League experience) to name just some players, that’s international players that have won things at other clubs and in Michael Owen a former Ballon D’or winner Then second relegation you’ve got Moussa Sissoko (runner up in Champions League and French international with 71 caps), Wijnaldum (Netherlands international and won the Champions League with Liverpool), Tim Krul (played for Netherlands in the World Cup), Janmaat (another Netherlands international), Mitrovic (international and just scored 40 goals for Fulham), Cissé (Senegal international), Jonjo Shelvey (still at the club), Ayoze Perez sold for £30m to Leicester, Dummett (Welsh international still with the club), Kevin Mbabu (Champions League player), Mbemba (another Champions League player), Siem De Jong (a previous Ajax star), Andros Townsend (England international and is in this Everton team mentioned but towards the end of his career), Lascelles (currently the club captain), Coloccini (Argentina international), Tiote (Ivory Coast international) and managed by Rafa Benitez, only 3 seasons previous were in the Quarter Final of the Europa League with many of the same squad.
Does anybody remember Man Utd getting relegated in the 1970s? Denis Law scoring the goal which sent them down when he was playing for Man City. But the season they were in the second division was actually quite a joyous affair as they won nearly every game by loads of goals with masses of fans at every away game.
Much like Newcastle with both recent relegations, it was nice to watch a competitive team win a game. I enjoyed us in the championship tbh. Premier league is a marketing monster and the diving, cheating and phrases like " he is entitled to go down " wind me up.
Everton are a nostalgic premier league club let’s have this right, I’d put Nottingham Forest above them. Everton and Leeds are similar too. Really want to see Everton relegated just for the aftermath ha.
Manchester City had won more than Leeds and Newcastle even before the Arab arrived and had much bigger attendance records. The biggest clubs in the 70s were the two north London clubs, Merseyside clubs, Manchester clubs, Villa, Leeds and probably Sunderland.
There are plenty of big clubs that have gone down Man Utd , Spurs , Chelsea , Man City , Leicester , Leeds , West Ham ,Aston Villa , Wolves , Newcastle etc......
Surprised you call us Leicester a big club always kinda been a yo yo team until our recent success, then again could argue we’ve had big players such as banks, lineker and heskey come through our doors
@@MH-vp7lf Well Leeds , Man city , Villa , Wolves , Newcastle , West Ham , Leicester , Forrest , Sunderland & others have had to face the drop from the prem league... Everton , Liverpool ,Arsenal have not been relegated from either for a long time Everton back in 1951 for a couple seasons....
From a neutral, watching Everton in the Championship will be very interesting. Examples of West Ham, Wolves, Fulham, Bournemouth, Watford, WBA, Norwich and Newcastle who have all had their runs in that league were all dominant and earned promotion back to the Premiership. Hope Everton don't get relegated but if they do.... what an interesting fight they will have to bounce back!
Most of Villa's success came before electric lighting, never mind television. Since WW2 Everton have been far bigger and more successful than both of them clubs. The only thing that have over Everton is European Cup success. Notts Forest aren't even big, they are a small club who happened to have a genius manager.
@@KingHumphrey haha. Yeah, the last time u won something was in 95. I would say Everton are a bigger club historical than Man City. Historically England has two main clubs. Liverpool, Man U The next group would be Arsenal, Chelsea. Then historical teams like Villa, Everton, Forest, Leeds and Spurs. Then the new money comes teams like Man city. Clubs with massive following but haven't won much like Newcastle and West Ham. So I would say if Everton went down they would probably be on par with Villa going down 6 season ago. But would Everton be known as a sleeping giant like Villa were?
Among others, Leeds, Newcastle and Aston Villa spring to mind......... there's no monopoly that says clubs of a certain standing must stay up....... Everton will be lost in the Championship without their more successful local rivals keeping them honest........ and Liverpool will be rueing the loss of six easy points a season...... LOL.
I’m pushing 40 and have never once wanted to watch an Everton team play on the tv specifically as they have never had aside to me worthy of fun or achievement. Living off mid level achievements from decades ago. Certainly not too big to go down. Leeds and certain Newcastle teams a much bigger shock and villa and forest bigger clubs
@@thiefoftomorrow Agreed. What even are Everton as a club identity, apart from a perennial reminder to everyone of how much more successful their other local rivals, Liverpool F.C. are? Everton are the real "floaters" of the EPL ... they just exist to exist within the top flight, achieving very little, for what seems like forever. Time to flush that turd out of the league!
Sheffield Wednesday?? 14th place for most major trophies won by English football clubs. We were one of the top 4 teams and almost won the league in the 90s before money became a big influence in football. Yes Everton, Villa and Newcastle are bigger than us but come on Wednesday, Leeds, Forest, Sheffield United, Blackburn, Wolves are clubs that need to be mentioned as all in England at some point have been in the top 4 of the first division (Premier League). Even back in the 90s Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United was a bigger derby than Man City v Man Utd, just look at the fa Cup semi that was played. So give the other teams a mention especially forest and Leeds as much as we dislike each other gotta respect what they achieved.
Trouble with Wednesday is they've created a new history of failure and underachievement during the last 20-25 years, the stadium has been neglected for the most part and the club has repeatedly been in the third tier. It's a real shame considering the clubs history and support, glad i'm old enough to remember the 80s and 90s and some of the teams and players we had in that era.
@@johnsr10 Historically Wednesday are massive and the fan base is still huge, but I agree, last 20 years they’ve set new standards. Finishing top 6 in the championship is an excellent season now.
The problem is you say Sheffield Wednesday and newer fans will look at you in league 1 and instantly forget/write off anything you've ever done. Same goes for as you said Forest although they are currently in the championship
Villa, Newcastle are arguably bigger clubs than Everton and they've been relegated before *I retract my statement Newcastle are not bigger than Everton* It is indeed a one club city up in the northeast, and I'm not a fan of the source of their dirty money, their owners commit blatant human rights violations everyday but they sweep it under the rug because they want money pumped into their club, if they are successful they won't be well liked, they'll be like man city whose owners don't deserve the success they've bought Lovely to see the arguments for and against though 🤩🤩
Newcastle hahaha they were up and down the league's up until early 90's . Everton have been in the top flight for donkeys!! They were also the best team in the country in the mid 80's ... Newcastle being relegated for the I don't no how many times in the last 40 years how can that be compared to Everton ?
There are many bigger clubs than Everton to go down, don’t know why people are so shocked, they’ve been close to relegation so many times in premier league history. Aston Villa, Newcastle, Forrest and Leeds were much bigger shocks and much bigger clubs too!
@Kraze they are the 10th most successful club in english football. They were also the first club to pay 1million pounds for a player. Newcastle also broke the world transfer record by some distance to sign Alan Shearer. How many times have Everton broken the transfer record? I guess only small clubs can break transfer records.
@Kraze I honestly couldn't see your comment, and still can't. I haven't deleted anything. If PSG are considered a bigger club than Everton, it's literally down to spending. PSG were mediocre before the takeover.
Villa and Newcastle are bigger clubs than Everton - but for the sheer money spent (and wasted on hacks like Iwobi, Prickford etc), Everton would definitely be seen as the biggest 'shock'. Given their perilous financial state, no guarantee they would bounce back either as I'd imagine most of the squad probably don't have relegation release clauses or wage drop provisions for dropping a division.
Newcastle ain't bigger than Everton, Everton have won far more, have way more social media followers etc I don't know how you think Newcastle are bigger
@@shiftypowersss That doesn't mean crap West Ham have bigger stadium than Chelsea but we all know who the biggest club is , Newcastle are nothing in front of Everton.

In the Premier League era, I think that the ‘biggest’ relegations in chronological order were Forest in 1993, Blackburn in 1999, Leeds in 2004, Newcastle in 2009 and Villa in 2016. If Everton go down I think it would top any of those, considering how much money they’ve spent on transfer fees and wages, how long they’ve been in the top flight for (68 consecutive seasons), and the fact that they hadn’t previously faced any serious relegation danger for 18 years since 2003/2004 (I think).
@@boneythelynx8884 I’m a Blackburn fan, and that stung as a kid at the time, as it only came 4 years after winning the title, we’d finished 6th and qualified for Europe the season before, and we’d spent / wasted quite a lot of money on Kevin Davies, Christian Dailly and Ashley Ward. In hindsight that relegation was a good thing for us though, as the 2000/2001 promotion season was so much fun and one of my favourite ever as a fan !
Villa circled the drain for years before we went down, wasn't a surprise to anyone we were garbage and gave up Both clubs are very similar in size and history but Everton have dropped like a stone making it a bigger thing, not a bigger club but a bigger thing
MON and Randy gave up - everyone who came in after tried to steady a sinking ship, with numerous holes in it. It was a 5/6 year decline due to lack of investment when MON left and Randy Lerner's very expensive divorce..
This is true and it serves as a warning to clubs like Villa and Newcastle who it appears have bags of money to spend! In particular Newcastle fans should take note, they are insisting that the club will be the new CITY; however, due to tighter fair play rules we will not see the CITY blueprint happen again no matter how they try to dodge fair play, especially if Everton is relegated after a spend of around $600M.
Everton, Leeds and Newcastle would then be the three biggest clubs ever relegated... and of those three, Everton have won BY FAR the most amount of trophies. So, yes, they would be the biggest.
Biggest clubs i can think of in terms of going down, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa. European cup winners and rich history and seems down the line both teams did have a fall from grace. Least they found some ways to bounce back, Forest its taken them longer than Villa though to get back into the Premier League. But, they've found a solid foundation these days and now are challenging for promotion and i do hope Forest do get promoted honestly. Can't ever forget how poorly run Forest were until their recent takeover in 2017, they have been climbing back slowly!
The size of the club being relegated is irrelevant, every club bar arsenal have been relegated at some point. What is big is the magnitude of the drop. Everton were top of the league in October/November 2020, and now touted for the drop a season and a half later. Thats the comparison that needs to be made To add to the fact, Everton were still as high as 2nd at the start of January 2021
@Liverpool FC The reason for Liverpool's so called attractiveness is driven by success. People follow successful clubs, rather than the clubs in the "locality". Everton are in a different class to Liverpool regarding recent achievements, of that there is no question. As for the thought that Evertonians believe they are too big to go down, that's a myth. We are in danger of losing our top flight position and are realistic about that.
@@collinskelv4406 They did however go into voluntary liquidation in 1910 and were removed from the football league. They then bought their way back into the league in 1919 after WW1.

No club is too big to go down and I literally mean all clubs you have to earn the right to stay up I have never understood this debate it's actually the reason why Everton are in the situation they are in as Campbell eluded to in this piece but there have been quite big clubs relegated I mean m city have been relegated and look how good they are now so things change in football over the years 😎😎
Aston Villa, Leeds, Newcastle? All big clubs. You might say Forest as well, but they were never as big a club - they just did absolutely amazing things under Clough. It was less of a surprise when Villa and Newcastle went down as the decline had been slower and it was obvious where they were headed, whereas if Everton go down, it would be a shock. More similar to Leeds in that respect.
Being big IS about what you win and Everton are a BIGGER club than Newcastle, who get relegated every other season and has never won anything as far as I can remember, (a bit like Everton).
Everton's biggest problem is they are almost certainly going to have a hefty points deduction next season for breaching FFP by £270m (from what I've heard, the exact figure may be different). They aren't going to come straight back up with that.
the League said they would not get a point deduction but they will need to sell there best players like Richarlson and Calvert lewin to be able to sign anyone
For me the craziest club to be relegated from the Premier League were Leeds. Top flight winners in 1992, Champions League semi finalists in 2000, and then relegated just 4 years later. Although, Everton would be a HUGE shock to go down given their financial resources.
Yeah I think Leeds, Newcastle, West Ham, Everton and Villa are all of similar size. Newcastle and Leeds have the 1 club city factor but it's just semantics comparing those 5. Forest should be up there too but they've not been up in the prem for so long now.
1 club city that have never had an average attendance of 40,000 or more. Everton are miles bigger than Leeds. Leeds had one golden period in their history, Everton have won league titles in SEVEN different decades and trophies in NINE different decades. Everton have only played FOUR seasons outside the top flight in their entire history. Leeds have played well over 40 seasons outside of it. Everton are historically the 4th biggest club in this country - behind Utd, Liverpool and The Arsenal - and they`ll easily become the biggest club to have been relegated from the Premier League if they go down.
@@ArchieFatcackie because the stadium only holds 36000. And it hasn't been upgraded because of the relegations and financial situation. There are plans to upgrade it to 50000-60000 capacity
In the grand scheme of things Everton are one of the biggest teams in English football and have been consistently over the course of the football league. They've still won the 4th highest number of titles. However, in the PL era they've spent 30 years at the top without ever mounting a remotely serious title challenge. In this respect, Leeds, Blackburn, Villa and Newcastle represent bigger falls from grace. That's not to say these clubs are bigger than Everton, but on the pitch they've certainly dropped further.
I think we need to look over a longer period than just the Premier league, history is a very important element. Over the bigger picture, I would say Everton is bigger than Leeds, Blackburn and arguably Newcastle too; Along with Villa Everton are steeped in history, and still one of the most successful clubs in England with a huge following. Villa though have won the European cup and super cup and their former director William McGregor started the football league in 1880, so they're a bit special!
@@divbody I think to anyone say 45 and over, Everton are one of the biggest clubs. They were pretty much a mainstay as one of the big clubs before that. Aston Villa, Leeds, Newcastle, West Ham. All these teams have been a staple of the premier league for years. It’s gonna happen eventually to half the teams in the prem. no different to any other year
They’re mentioning this because of how many trophies Everton F.C have won in total. I think Villa may have 1 more trophy in total or 1 less, depending on what trophies you are counting. But I think because they have won 9 league titles. But because of how much Everton has spent in the last 6 years makes it even more worse
Well in terms of "biggest club" as they said, arguably Villa are at least a similar level, if not "bigger". Everton won 9 top flight league titles to Villa's 7. But then, Villa have won more domestic cup trophies and have also won the European Cup/Champions league, whereas Everton haven't. So, ...Yeah.
@@lmanofficial5478 The majority of Everton's cup trophies are mainly comprised of 9 'Community Shields' which no fan really cares about and is treated more as a pre-season friendly. A formality, to kick of the new season. Villa on the other hand have won the European cup (which Everton haven't) and Villa have also won far more major domestic cup trophies: 7 FA Cups and 5 League cups. That objectively dwarfs Everton's cup trophies. Also, the fact that Everton have never once won the League Cup in their entire existence is quite remarkable, given that Everton, along with Villa were founding members of the English football league in 1988. How have they managed that in over 60 years of that League Cup competition? (which commenced in 1960) Incredible!
Words cannot express how badly I want Everton to go down. They are the most boring club in premiership history. They never win any trophies, never challenge for trophies, never challenge for European spots.. never battle relegation... They just exist. Hopefully they go down this year 🤞

This sentiment is exactly why Everton is in the current predicament - in utter denial based on their January window and a long stretch of inert performances until it's too late.
I love the way commentators forget football existed before Sky invented it in 1992. Would like to remind people that Manchester City and Chelsea spent time in the lower divisions in decades before the PL era. Go back far enough (mid 70s) then Spurs and Manchester United spent a season in the second flight. Nobody is too big to be relegated.
90s was the worst for City dropping down to League 1 ( old 2nd Division) and promoted all the way to the top division and relegated one last time and promoted one last time in the early 2000s
In terms of the size of the fanbase, yes, but that's it. In terms of major honours won and seasons in the top flight, Everton absolutely dwarf both of them.
Everton are down, I told my friends they would go down at Christmas and they've been in freefall ever since. Everyone around them has been winning, it's looking extremely ominous for them.
Souness saying “ they’ve bought players not up to the mark” is no insight at all. Easy to say that when it goes badly. Look at Arsenal, presumably Souness thinks their recruitment was bad then good then bad now good?
Nottingham Forest are the best team to go down from the premier league. We won 2 European Cups (which were harder to win than the modern day champions league) won 1 title won 2 FA cups and won 5 league cups. Why are people even debating this😂. Nobody expected Forest to go down that season at all.
I’m a Forest fan but the way I determine a big club is watch them go down and see how many fans stick around. We have been selling our home and away all season. Leeds always brought 5k fans to The City Ground, so did Wednesday, Villa, Sheff Utd, Newcastle and Sunderland. Teams that have been through hardship and their fans still support through thick and thin, and still keep pushing on regardless. Yes we had most of our glory within 4/5 years but it’s stuck continuously and we have fans all over the world because of it. Let’s see how many fans are at Everton next season if they go down. New fans will just look at the prem now and think they’re all big clubs but those same people forget that football existed before money ruined it.
Its so weird I’m 27 and never thought of Everton as a big club. I feel like old timers are really making this story bigger than it is Everton are not the club of 50 years ago, most people won’t remember a time they were successful and no one abroad will have ever heard Of em.
Eh? I could go on about how long they’ve been in the top flight, how much money they’ve got, trophies etc…but I’m just going to call you a c**t. Football isn’t the sport for you.
Love this footballing myth that Everton are this huge club. They are a big English club yes, but no bigger than the likes of Villa, West Ham, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest... they've all been relegated in recent history so why on Earth do people think Everton are too big to go down?! And to think some people call Newcastle fans deluded... Everton fans beat the Geordies at the delusion game hands down!
@@Rintrah85 Oh I know that only too well. I was born in Newcastle and, although I haven't lived there since I was a kid, I love the city, the people and the football club. Before 1995 and the start of the proper Man Utd domination, Everton had won more league titles than Man Utd. It took until 1999 for Liverpool to win more top flight leagues games than Everton. It tool Arsene Wenger 20 seasons until Arsenal overtook their record of top 4 finishes. Everton history in the top flight is pretty impressive.
Forest aren't in that group. They have history but haven't been in the PL for ages and are a small town. Leeds, Newcastle, Everton, Villa, West Ham are all similar sized clubs.
The first time Newcastle went down was a big shock as we had been a regular in Europe but by the second time Ashley had destroyed us to the point it was no shock
Too big to go down - as soon as that is said a club is doomed. Bolton fan too!
City in 1996 was a huge shock. And then 1998 was an even bigger one, becoming the first club with 10+ major trophies to fall to League One.

Who's to blame? Ancelotti or Benitez?

Blackburn were considered big when they went down, they'd won the PL title
Leeds were considered big when they went down, they were full of big players and a period when they were challenging for the PL title
Are Everton really bigger than those two?

Bigger club is a debate but in terms of squad I think both Newcastle relegations were pretty shocking when you see what individual players had achieved before and after
The first relegation you had Michael Owen, Jose Enrique (went on to Liverpool), Damien Duff (was a key part at the start of Abramovich’s reign and Premier League winner), Nicky Butt (won just about everything with Man Utd), Alan Smith (regular in the Champions League for Leeds and Man Utd and won silverware with Man Utd), Jonás Gutierrez (Argentina international), Mark Viduka (Australia international, premier league veteran with Champions League experience) and Obafemi Martins (former Inter Milan wonder kid with Champions League experience) to name just some players, that’s international players that have won things at other clubs and in Michael Owen a former Ballon D’or winner
Then second relegation you’ve got Moussa Sissoko (runner up in Champions League and French international with 71 caps), Wijnaldum (Netherlands international and won the Champions League with Liverpool), Tim Krul (played for Netherlands in the World Cup), Janmaat (another Netherlands international), Mitrovic (international and just scored 40 goals for Fulham), Cissé (Senegal international), Jonjo Shelvey (still at the club), Ayoze Perez sold for £30m to Leicester, Dummett (Welsh international still with the club), Kevin Mbabu (Champions League player), Mbemba (another Champions League player), Siem De Jong (a previous Ajax star), Andros Townsend (England international and is in this Everton team mentioned but towards the end of his career), Lascelles (currently the club captain), Coloccini (Argentina international), Tiote (Ivory Coast international) and managed by Rafa Benitez, only 3 seasons previous were in the Quarter Final of the Europa League with many of the same squad.

What a disgrace for Everton 😂
I’m pushing 40 and have never once wanted to watch an Everton team play on the tv specifically as they have never had aside to me worthy of fun or achievement. Living off mid level achievements from decades ago. Certainly not too big to go down. Leeds and certain Newcastle teams a much bigger shock and villa and forest bigger clubs

@@temporaryuseraccount0012 Nine league championships.....
Massive
@@johnsr10 Historically Wednesday are massive and the fan base is still huge, but I agree, last 20 years they’ve set new standards. Finishing top 6 in the championship is an excellent season now.
The problem is you say Sheffield Wednesday and newer fans will look at you in league 1 and instantly forget/write off anything you've ever done. Same goes for as you said Forest although they are currently in the championship
Villa, Newcastle are arguably bigger clubs than Everton and they've been relegated before
*I retract my statement Newcastle are not bigger than Everton*
It is indeed a one club city up in the northeast, and I'm not a fan of the source of their dirty money, their owners commit blatant human rights violations everyday but they sweep it under the rug because they want money pumped into their club, if they are successful they won't be well liked, they'll be like man city whose owners don't deserve the success they've bought

@Kraze "especially" Newcastle 😂 - Newcastle are thee biggest on the list pal
@Kraze Forest won 2 European cups.
@Kraze they are the 10th most successful club in english football. They were also the first club to pay 1million pounds for a player. Newcastle also broke the world transfer record by some distance to sign Alan Shearer. How many times have Everton broken the transfer record? I guess only small clubs can break transfer records.
When will you learn that Forest only has one ´r´ ?🤣

If Everton go down they wont be coming back up for years. Could be a Leeds situation or worse
Yeah I instantly thought of Blackburn
@@boneythelynx8884 I’m a Blackburn fan, and that stung as a kid at the time, as it only came 4 years after winning the title, we’d finished 6th and qualified for Europe the season before, and we’d spent / wasted quite a lot of money on Kevin Davies, Christian Dailly and Ashley Ward.
In hindsight that relegation was a good thing for us though, as the 2000/2001 promotion season was so much fun and one of my favourite ever as a fan !
Nah... would love to see those Toffe sniffing scouse mackems go down hahahahahaa
Villa circled the drain for years before we went down, wasn't a surprise to anyone we were garbage and gave up
Both clubs are very similar in size and history but Everton have dropped like a stone making it a bigger thing, not a bigger club but a bigger thing
Aston Villa? Nottingham Forest?
Nottingham Forest??
What have Everton won apart from an egg cup.
Newcastle crowd and ground by far superior
Tranz Everton were the best team in England in the mid 80's shame English were banned from Europe could of maybe win a European cup
Nottingham Forest. And I'd love to see them promoted. ( Man U Fan )
Yeah, I'd gladly exchange Everton's place to welcome Forest back to the top flight again.
The size of the club being relegated is irrelevant, every club bar arsenal have been relegated at some point. What is big is the magnitude of the drop. Everton were top of the league in October/November 2020, and now touted for the drop a season and a half later. Thats the comparison that needs to be made
To add to the fact, Everton were still as high as 2nd at the start of January 2021
Aston Villa were second at one point
@Liverpool FC The reason for Liverpool's so called attractiveness is driven by success. People follow successful clubs, rather than the clubs in the "locality". Everton are in a different class to Liverpool regarding recent achievements, of that there is no question. As for the thought that Evertonians believe they are too big to go down, that's a myth. We are in danger of losing our top flight position and are realistic about that.
Arsenal has never been relegated

In the grand scheme of things Everton are one of the biggest teams in English football and have been consistently over the course of the football league. They've still won the 4th highest number of titles.
However, in the PL era they've spent 30 years at the top without ever mounting a remotely serious title challenge. In this respect, Leeds, Blackburn, Villa and Newcastle represent bigger falls from grace.

Over the bigger picture, I would say Everton is bigger than Leeds, Blackburn and arguably Newcastle too; Along with Villa Everton are steeped in history, and still one of the most successful clubs in England with a huge following.
