Arai Rapide Retro Helmet Review

- We take a look at the anticipated release from Arai, the Rapide. Ticking a lot of boxes with an amazing blend of safety, functionality and style we think the Rapide will be a popular pick amongst the urban riders out there :bit.ly/2PGnQBF
Arai themselves pitch their long awaited entry into the retro helmet market as 'old school cool, without the compromises' and it is fair to say they have nailed their own brief.
For their debut “modern classic” lid Arai have channelled 80s looks with a nod to the aggressive naked and streetfighter style. The Rapide has a clean, minimalist shape with handsome contours in place to hide clever, multi-stage air channels that run both over and around the shell. This stringently tested shell is formed using a smooth PB e-cLc (Arai’s often lauded Peripherally Belted Laminate shell) to give it impressive strength while shedding precious weight at the same time. The helmet has obviously passed ECE approval.
As standard this lid comes with Arai's VAS-V Max Vision clear visor combined a pin-lock insert to achieve a crisp field of vision and eliminate fogging. The visor mechanism itself is situated lower to give additional length across the temple regions in a bid to smooth the overall profile, increasing 'glancing off' energy and optimising slide performance. Also in place is a 3D moving latch system borrowed from Arai's F1 helmet, which is their most intuitive, one finger operated system to date.
You don't have to be a longstanding Arai fan to love this lid, but those who find themselves dipping their toes in the retro full-face market will find it a smooth transition from their more technical race helmets

Just bought one in green…. It’s superb. I’ve had Shark, AGV, Caberg, and most recently top of the range HJC which I really love but has a narrow fit that becomes uncomfortable after 60 minutes. I’ve returned to Arai for the third time of asking and immediately felt at home. Honestly, the difference is significant in terms of quality and comfort. I thought the visor release system was fiddly but I got used to it within five minutes. The only negative is the price… it’s an expensive piece of kit. However, given that it’s so good I’d say you get what you pay for. Love it - outstanding.
I love this helmet ,the price will be insane here in India cause of ur great custom duties. I probably buy it in the US.
Hi there & thx for this informative review, just ordered the all white & getting it this Wednesday, lov the look 80,s retro & its hand made.
Hope you enjoy it!
@@UrbanRiderlondon hi & thanks very much, i Believe its money well spent, its very well made & I have confidence it will protect me thx.
Love the yellow one. Definitely top of my list. I think it will go well with my 2019 CB1000R which is also modern but with a retro twist. Great review.
We agree, it would be perfect
Seems like a perfect piece of gear, even the price is not that high for an Arai :). Fantastic review and a fantastic helmet
We agree - thank you
Please do a direct comparison between the arai and the shoei.
Great review, keep up the good work
Good idea - once we get the Shoei in, we'll try and do something like that
Definitely going to check this out when it comes to Australia.
It's a great lid
Excellent review
Glad you liked it!
How many shell sizes? And what sizes are what shell?
what about speaker cutouts?
I want one.
The Rapide and the Glamster are what I've been waiting for. Retro style but full on modern features is something that has been sorely lacking. What everyone will want to know now is: how do they compare to a Shoei NXR (or similar Arai), noise wise?
As much as I love the NXR and its photocromatic visor, I might just trade it for one of these.
A few of us here have NXRs and we're excited by these new lids from Shoei and Arai. The Arai definitely holds up, and we're sure the Shoei will too, it's just yet to arrive for us to test extensively!
@@UrbanRiderlondon I was wondering about the comparison with the NXR too, primarily, which is better on a naked bike in terms of buffeting? I honestly find all helmets now noisier than they used to be, I'm not sure if that's down to increased venting, speaker cutouts, etc?
fneves They're all noisy. Do yourself a favour and take that consideration out of your buying decision. I've owned multiple high end lids over the years, including many Arai's and the quietest one was a Davida open face, the least protective of all my helmets. Either get a multi pack 33 db foam earplugs or invest in a custom moulded set and be done with it. You'll thank me when you realize you don't have tinnitus after 25 years of riding.
@@triumphlover7455 That's great advice, thanks. I did in fact get a pack of foam earplugs a few months ago, as I've been wondering about long term noise damage (I wanna ride for as long as I can). Gotta confess that an open face Hedon I tried was also the quietest, due to how the sides have to hug your skull. If only they were safer... It's unfortunate to learn that all brands seem to be the same though, pretty much like will M says above. I guess our general expectations of modern possibilities, aren't met in real life use in that department.
@@fs_seven Don't worry, loss of hearing does not stop you riding:-) In general, I've found that if you can hear the car, they are gonna hit you anyway. Vision, balance, coordination and paying attention are critical. Oh, and being just a little slower than flat out all the time;-)
Is the Arai size chart accurate or do the Rapide models run smaller than other Arai helmets? I usually wear a large in helmets but according to the size chart on your site I wear a medium. Can you clarify that?
Hi Paco,
We would always suggest following our size guide, but if you have other Arai helmets in Large, that may be the better size for you
Hey nice video. Do you think it looks good on a modern bike like the GSX S 1000?
I think it looks great - it has that neo-retro look that works on modern bikes too
How does the helmet profile or shell size compare to the Shoei glamster? Is it much larger?
It is somewhat larger in shell size, once we get our hands back on the Glamster we will be able to do a side by side comparison.- UR
Great review!!
Is it possible to install the Cardo Packtalk slim? Looking at the back I don't think so, can you confirm that?
Hey - that's not an item we have here, so I can't say for sure. I would say it would fit most intercoms, but this one looks a bit specific
Thanks for the reply! I got a Shoei Glamster instead and will test on that one ;)
Have you done a review on the qv or qvpro as I’m interested in a review b4 I by ?
We haven't !
If you had the choice for a weekend helmet would you go Arai Rapide or Shoei Glamster, regardless of price???
HI Martin, They are both great options! For more retro style we would advise probably more on the Glamster but if you want a more modern look then a rapide. If you ever wish to take it to a track then a Rapide as they are approved fro track use too. Hope this helps - Iza
Is this the same helmet ARAI concept x? Black frost?
It is yes
Any idea when it will be released in the US?
Unfortunately we do not! You could just buy from us and we will ship to the US
Does this helmet use a different shield than other arai helmets? The pods look different
Hi Konrad. Arai has few different visors that fit different models. The visor for Rapide is the 'ARAI VAS-V VISOR MAX VISION;. Hope this helps! - Iza
What’s that yellow helmet in the video? To the left
It's the Arai Rapide in Ha Yellow colourway
what's that clicking sound at begining
Not 100% sure what you mean - UR
Is there room for comms devices?
Whilst there is not a pre-designed channel for comms, you will be able to fit plenty of different systems in
Why hasn't this helmet released in the US? Do you ship to the US?
Hi Gerry, Yes we do ship to US! :)
Still don’t get the ‘retro’ look! Looks like it’s a perfect street fighter lid. Simpson but a decent lid. I’ll be getting one for sure.
Think more 80s/90s rather than 50s/60s/70s like most of the other options we offer. That counts as retro now
is that the same as the Concept X?
They haven't confirmed, but the Rapide looks like the UK name for the Concept X
Hi UR,
Is it designed for wearing glasses?
You can probably fit most glasses in, sure!
i have worn an arai since the 80s my first one a wes cooley supervent and then giga , condor and rx7 , but looking at the new rapid i cant get over the fact that there is such a huge differance in the price of the colours , whats that all about after all it the same helmet why is grey more than white or red or yellow thats just taking the piss ...
Do you ship to the US?
Yes we do!
is it the same as the arai concept-X (in australia)
Hi, Yes it is!
What head shape does this helmet fit. I’m round oval.
This is quite intermediate we have found - worth a try
Fits like a AGV or like a BELL helmet ? I’m a one size bigger on my bell moto 3
Urban Rider hello it Fits like a AGV or like a BELL helmet ? I’m a M size on my bell moto 3 and S size on a agv ,, thank you
How loud is this helmet?
Hi Jeff,
We have found it to be quiet enough! It will depend on the user though
Is this a good helmet for glasses?
Hi. Most helmets are suitable for glasses. How comfortable the fit is while wearing glasses with a helmet depends on the glasses frame and the head shape. Hope this helps! - Iza
Is this glasses friendly?
Yes
But is it safer than a £200 helmet with 5 star in Sharp test? Or is it only comfort and style you pay extra for?
There is a lot that goes into the end price of this helmet, safety, features, feel, fit, sizing for example so although this is ECE 22-05 this is not the only contributing factor to an overall price. - UR
What a fucking !! Helmet 😳👍🏼
Cool isn't it
considering helmets should be replaced after a few year, it's just for really rich riders.
