*Sorry for not answering questions regarding hamsters, sand, chinchilla sand, etc. I know as much as you do. I was recommended chinchilla sand for hamsters by a pet store.* - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

Sandbaths help keep the fur of hamsters, chinchillas (and gerbils too I believe) healthy and clean. Water bathing is considered a no no as it will remove the natural oils needed in the fur and can greatly drop a rodent's body temperature if it remains in water too long or if it's coat does not dry quickly enough. For hamsters, use Chinchilla Sand, not dust as it will cause respiratory problems. Also, don't leave the sandbath in the cage and always use new sand each time :)

So in conclusion, if you want a rodent that baths in water, get a rat.
You know what is sad? :( It's 8 years old this hamster doesn't live any more :(

I could be very much mistaken but my hamster looks exactly like this (he's a russian dwarf hamster) and he has a life span of just over 2 years

Yea I had a hamster before. On time it was dying and I fed it one last seed. Never got to eat it. I kept that seed and mad e it as a necklace. They put the seed in some type of glass, plastic, or something.

Just FYI for everyone: For a hamster, buy Chinchilla SAND, not dust! The dust is too fine for a Jammie's respiratory system, you need to buy the sand for them.

He would enjoy it more if you added a bigger (round) sandbath. Choose something thats at least twice big as your current one. And alittle bit deeper too. They love digging too!

Well, in my personal opinion it's best not too as hamsters could soil it pretty quickly with their waste and you don't want them rolling in that :P I guess it depends on how observant you are of the cleanliness of your hamster's cage. If you're the kind of person who cleans the cage thoroughly and often and are quick to remove and change anything that needs to be, then leaving the bath in isn't a problem. Hamsters are delicate animals, so you don't want to take any risks with their health :)

For all you asking about what kind of sand is okay to use- it's called chinchilla dust. It's a safe way for hammies to get clean.

@Snoopokoritso you can order chinchilla sand online. they also have it at petco/petsmart, and any local pet store that has exotic stuff will stock it. call before though

no they are not made for swimming or soaking in water. Hamsters can clean themelves. But if you really want to take them a "bath" give them a sand bath.
