U.S. ARMY ATTACK PATHFINDERS

  • "Look before you leap" has always been good advice in marriage or in war. Airborne operations requiring Drop Zones and Air Assault operations requiring Landing Zones must be recced and verified safe before the troops land but our laxitude with relying on helicopter VTOL has cost us dearly in men and machines--this ad hocery must stop. The tracked tank-mechanized, Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has on numerous occasions wiped-out enemy Arab armies who landed foot troops from helicopters--this is why they do not develop this weak force structure beyond small-scale, special operations. The IDF has fitted Active Protection Systems (APS) like their tanks have to their CH-53D transport helicopters but need 30mm nose autocannon to self-defend against gunners and RPG rocketeers near their landing points. If the U.S. Army is to continue with AIR ASSAULT it must deliver light tanks to the fight and make sure they are not taking slow, noisy and vulnerable helicopters into enemy ambushes to do so.
EVERY U.S. Army Airborne, Air Assault and Light Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) must have a 6-man ATTACK PATHFINDER Team with a Wiesel Light Recon Vehicle (LRV) aka light tank modified to Roll-On/Off (RO-RO) from a current C-2A Greyhound COD plane CATOBAR operated from U.S. Navy carriers. The Army must insist--with the support of the NAVSPECWAR SEAL community--that these planes not be retired and instead upgraded with E-2D propfans and low-level flight penetration aids into "B" models and possibly stealthy "C" models. In WW2, the tracked, open-topped, M29C Weasel was found to be the only vehicle that could maneuver over soft snow as reported by LTG James Gavin after the decisive Battle of the Bulge. Moreover, its original purpose was to be parachute-dropped from under British bombers to cross-country maneuver (XCM) empower "Pyke Force" in Norway to tie down even more Germans than the O.S.S. teams did lead by men like future CIA Director, Major William Colby.

Pyke Force later became the "Devil's Brigade" sent to spearhead mountain warfare in Italy immortalized in the William Holden Hollywood movie by the same name. This unit also utilized M29C Weasels and the marvelous side-magazine-fed Johnson Light Machine Guns (LMGs)--full-sized 7.62mm suppressive fire our current rifle squads lack with anemic 5.56mm M249 LMGs.

Today's 5-ton Wiesel 2s are fully armor-enclosed to withstand 7.62mm bullets upgradeable to 30mm autocannon protection with armor applique' panels, can be armed with 30mm autocannon and ATGMs--but doesn't swim like its forebears. The British Royal Marine Commandos realized this and instead selected the super-sized, 7-ton Bv206S called the Bv10S which can swim--but can't RO-RO from inside RAF CH-47s and with modifications, C-2As like Wiesel 2s can. The RM Bv10S can be externally under-slung from a CH-47 or larger helicopter and put down in the water to swim the rest of the way to shore if needed.
THE CRAP V-22, CMV-22 CANNOT CARRY ANY OF THESE LIGHT TANKS, which is intolerable.
When it comes to larger aircraft like twin-engined, C-27Js Spartans and larger 4-engined, C-130 Hercules types, the Wiesel 2, Bv206S and Bv10S all easily RO-ROs or slides off on a Type V airdrop platform from inside for Airborne operations by cargo parachutes onto DZs and STOL airlanding onto Assault Landing Zones (ALZs). The British Paras could create their own ATTACK PATHFINDERS with QE aircraft carrier deployment options if they obtained Wiesel 2s and the RN wisely obtained E-2D Hawkeyes for AEW/AWACs capabilities and C-2B Sea Greyhounds for COD and Airborne/Special operations and fitted arrestor wires on the stern ends of their two carriers. The Red Berets could also obtain some larger 10-ton M113 Gavin light tanks and solely air-deploy them from RAF C-130J Hercules, A400M Atlas and C-17A Globemaster III transports though if fitted with ARIS SPA waterjets and nose, they become "AmphiGavins" better capable of swimming from ship-to-shore than the Bv206S and Bv10S. Vanilla M113 Gavins can RO-RO from new CH-53K King Stallion heavy lift helicopters but purchasing even a squadron would be enormously expensive to get a light tank VTOL capability--albeit still slower than fixed-wing C-2A/Bs. The British Army has already used M113 MissileGavins with 23 kilometer-reach SPIKE ATGMs in combat in Iraq/Afghanistan as PDM precision strike firepower assets.

WHAT RIGHT LOOKS LIKE: U.S. Army OV-1 Mohawk & O-1 Bird Dog Dirt & Grassy Field STOL Testing
    OD Green OV-1B Mohawk

Sky Camouflage Gray OV-1D Mohawk (look how far she zooms into the air! Wow)

America's Army should NOT have retired our 100 mph O-1 Bird Dogs in 1972 and 300 mph OV-1D Mohawks in 1996. If we had these long-range, Observation/Attack planes we wouldn't be in the mess we are in with overly complex crap helicopters that can't fly often & long enough and soda straw narrow-vision drones with a 50% crash rate: making the entire U.S. Army go broke.

Relying on the fighter-bomber jet jocks in the USAF or moron corps--also corrupted by rotorheads--to buy Attack Trainer (AT) derived O/A planes is like waiting for "The Great Pumpkin" to appear--madness. This is the proper context, 20-something dumbshits for the word, "crazy" and "insane".
The U.S. Army should buy its own small (MFI-17) or large grasshopper (PC-6/UV-20B) folding-wing planes with BATTLEBOX shipping containers and ski jump trailers reducing their TO roll by 50% to create Observation/Attack/Liaison (OAL) force-multiplier capabilities we've suffered without since 1996.

Japanese Navy SUBMERSIBLE Ship--Militarized as an Aircraft Carrier

Too bad the MLP doesn't have a SKI JUMP and off-setting the rear bridge so aircraft can land by arrestor wires for STOBAR operations of E-2D Hawkeye radar planes, MC-2B COD/multi-mission transport propfans and F-35Cs--frankly nearly any land-based fighter-bomber with tail-hook and toughened landing ear, folding wings etc.!
LCAC hovercraft that fly over sea mines can carry IRSG tanks by THE ENTIRE SHIP SEMI-SUBMERGING so they zip out the sides instead of the slow crapola USN/Mc stern ramp bottleneck....
Landing spots for CH-53K King Stallion heavy lift helicopters could fly over sea mines carrying a squad of Commandos and their M113A4 Super Gavin light tank inside with 30mm autocannon, SPIKE or Javelin ATGM Remote Weapon System; ARIS SPA water jets and nose makes them into AmphiGavins that can swim themselves to shore if sea mines are absent.
