I completey agree with you! We've always done the no shoes in the house rule since my mom got wall-to-wall carpeting in the early 70s. I love your home. It's so cozy and inviting.

Born and raised in Oregon and I’m a third generation of “no shoes” in the house. My German/English grandparents raised my dad this way and that’s how it’s always been. Most of my relatives and friends all live the same way with their homes. So it’s pretty common in the USA.
Also, you mentioned using lavender laundry soap for the sheets, can you recommend the one you like?
Oh and I have outfitted both of our bedrooms with your Cozy linen/cotton sheets, duvets and throw pillows. And the hotel style bed pillows you recommended. ❤❤❤

Great house rules! I have several friends who do the no shoes in the house rule. I should consider it now that my kids are all grown.
ps- got my duvet yesterday in the mail and I immediately put it on my bed!!!! Oh wow is it beautiful!!!!! If anyone is on the fence about purchasing Christina's Cozy Prairie linens, do it! You won't regret it. ❤

I have a couple of suggestions about the "no shoes" rule. Some people must wear their shoes due to mobility issues. If you have a guest coming who must wear their shoes, have a mat available, either just outside or just inside the door, for them to wipe the bottoms of their shoes. For a wheelchair-bound guest, plan a discreet way to help them wipe debris from the wheels of their chair. As a wheelchair user myself, I'm aware that dirt, grass, and leaves stick to my wheels. It's impossible to me to wipe my wheels by myself, especially the small front wheels. Discreetly helping a wheelchair-bound guest wipe their wheels is a sweet, thoughtful gesture.

I was going to make a similar comment. As an RN who works in home health, I repeatedly tell patients with diabetes to never go without shoes. The smallest wound from stepping on something could turn into a real problem. Other people have a variety of issues that make going shoeless painful and make mobility difficult (think arthritis, etc.) My family has "indoor shoes" that we wear, but I never ask guests to remove their shoes. What you could do is offer disposable shoe covers. I carry them with me when I go to patients' homes. They're inexpensive and allow people to still wear the shoes that fit and protect their feet. Just a thought!! :)

@vickiwood9192.. Absolutely. I have to wear shoes, EVEN IN MY OWN HOME ..due to Imjuries I experienced.. ..that's a reason for DOORMATS ,inside and outside.
If people really have an understanding that NOT EVERYONE can " go without shoes ," indoors .....this silly " Rule " is dependent upon one's Health, Circumstances, Mobility issues, etc. I do not care if people wear thiet shoes inside my Home, .. I have Doormats, outside, and inside so I don't find it a " big deal " about shoes indoors... Yes, 75 % of dirt may come in from the Outdoors, but " Rules " like this do not make sense for everyone. ....if that's what she requires when one visits her , ..I suppose I won't be ...lol. 😉🙂 ( I say that with humour, but also a smidgen of seriousness, lol)

Agree with all your rules. As an American, the taking your shoes off is newish to me, but since we started doing it, I can’t believe we haven’t always done it- the shoes get so dirty outside! Your home is so beautiful and serves as such an inspiration for my own decorating, which luckily is farmhouse which goes with the architecture of my home (good thing cause it’s my favorite). My spouse and I recently went to a Hindu-American house and we had to go barefoot inside and I have to say it was the cleanest floor of a house I’ve ever seen. Its actually inspired us to take our shoes off at the door now and it will become a rule for our house too. Just know you’ll always have people who question your rules, but it’s also your house and they have to respect them as your guest.

Totally agree with your reasons for no shoes in the house or pets on the bed. I do not allow my cats in the bedroom purposely so they don't get on the bed.
I do wear shoes in the house but only because I have outside pets and I can get outside quicker in an emergency. Since I now have mobility issues, it's difficult to get shoes on quickly. But I do agree with all the reasons you state. Yes, clean fresh sheets.
I'm now retired and live alone in Florida. I do like your family rules.

I have a friend who tells me that they have a no shoe rule, but he walks straight through my front door, shoes on, not even stopping to at least wipe his feet. I agree with you on no pets in bed too. I love your rule about always eating dinner at the table together. And cleaning up afterwards together. That's the way my house functioned when I was little and it kept the family together. But inevitably all my siblings moved out and I was the only one left with my parents. Now we eat dinner sitting on the couch watching TV. No interaction. My mom is now physically disabled so all cleaning is done by me and my dad, who travels for work. Let's just say my house is filthy, and it's my own fault. Cleanliness is just not one of the priorities in my household anymore and it should be. I could use some prayers to give me the strength to do more.

My comment is pretty long but your video striked me lol:
I like your shoe holder/pan style with the rocks! I might try that for the shoes we wear often for the season.
I was raised in an Asian/American household so no shoes as well and we wear slippers around the home (I have separate slippers for upstairs and downstairs lol).
I have my kids take off their white socks (if wearing them) mainly because it's so hard to get them super clean again when they pick up dirt, etc. around the home.
I also don't store any shoes in my closet lol- maybe if my closet was lux and had a small window (for airing out) the dressier (less worn) ones after wiping the bottoms clean?
My husband laughs when I told him I don't like polyester sheets or clothing because it makes me sweat as well but lucky him, he doesn't sweat like a typical person and can tolerate it if we happen to have one on there while our cotton ones are in the wash!
We don't have pets any more but we did not allow them on our bed and couches in the past.
When I was little I would sneak my cat into my bed lol- he was a long-haired Persian and so he always nuzzled around my neck and purred. Miss him so.
Agree on the no-gadget zone at the dinner table :D

We are constantly in and out of the house and we don't take off the shoes twenty-five times a day. We are active, very active. If we are in for the day, which is rare, then we have on the slides but with so many chores of the day shoeless is not an option. I have trained myself of frequent cleaning of my floors. I also am in the health field and shoes are a must for a lot of people. I don't understand how the pets are in and out of the house and their paws are dirt also. Can't stand how people let pets in the bed, on the sofa etc. I change my sheets twice per week, nothing like clean cotton sheets.

If only dress shoes are in bedroom closets, where do you keep your everyday shoes? Where do you keep office work shoes - they're a dressier shoe you wear everyday. We're struggling with creating a system and routine to not wear shoes in the house. Our entry points (front door, and garage door) do not have a space for shoe collection. We have house shoes/slippers that we wear, but often step out to the backyard, and then we're tracking stuff back in. We have a dog too that tracks in the outside dirt. We've recently moved in to a subdivision surrounded by farms. I cannot keep up. Even my little robot-vac can't keep up. I'm open to any reader's suggestions.Thanks.

Hello from Michigan 👋 I do not allow shoes to be worn in our home - I find it absolutely disgusting. Even when family and friends come over, they automatically take off their shoes. One exception - last year, during my daughter's open house - guests were coming in and out so that rule was meant to be broken. I may have stayed up very late and vacuumed and mopped after everyone went home 🤮

  • @Lollylolly7765
    @Lollylolly7765 2 місяці тому +3

Your house rules are my house rules. The idea of shoes on the house is disgusting to me. When I worked, I worked in a hospital so a lot of my shoes were casual shoes that I could wear grocery shopping or just going out to a show or whatever so think of what is in a hospital that could be on the bottom of my shoes. I also have had dogs most of my life and if anybody else that has dogs, you will understand that there are times when a dog goes pee it may go on the sidewalk or road, etc. so you have no idea what you’re walking in, that’s dry and now you’re going to step into your house. Not for me. Also I agree we don’t have our dogs in our bed for hygiene reasons. They have their own bed and blankets which get washed regularly. We have blankets that we use in our family room on our laps that they can come up on, but they aren’t even allowed all over the couches and chairs because I don’t want the hair everywhere. There’s nothing worse than going to someone’s house and your clothes are covered in dog or cat hair. When you talk about chores after dinner and on the weekend with your daughters, I think that is wonderful. We grew up doing chores and it teaches you how to do things around the house. Nowadays, I find so many people that I know that have kids that are grown up don’t have a clue how to do anything because their parents did everything for them around the house. You’re not helping your children if you’re not teaching them how to cook, clean, do laundry, outside work etc. I also think when children are taught to do chores it teaches them to respect their homes as well as how hard their parents work for what they have. Money doesn’t grow on trees.

I pretty much have the same rules as you but the pet one! No animals on furniture...period, which is near impossible. Cats climb on tables and countertops, so gross, worse than dirty shoes in the house as far as I'm concerned. Most of our guests will offer to take off their shoes when they see that we don't wear our shoes and some also come from the same "no-shoe in home" mind-set.

Guests who want to wear something on their feet will bring what they normally wear inside such as slippers or indoor shoes. We do not all walk around barefoot inside, we just don't wear outside shoes. I think this partly stems from the fact that we spend so much time in winter boots that are definitely not suitable to wear indoors. Our winter boots are covered in snow, salt or sand.

I have plantar fasciitis... my feet would hurt bad for days after a short visit to your house if I had to go without shoes. I have a niece who demands everyone take their shoes off. We have only visited once. I brought house shoes with the arch support I need that I only wear indoors. She still didn't want me to wear them because her kids wouldn't understand why I could wear shoes and they couldn't. Needless to say, we've not visited again. It's not good for your feet to go barefoot on hardwood and tile floors... that's why we have indoor-only shoes with proper support.
