Seriously, that part made me mad from the start. I know it’s a thing in many places, but if you watch shows like 90 Day Fiancé it seems like NONE of them make the effort to learn their foreign partner’s language. That just shows a lack of respect and genuine interest on his part from the very beginning.

I am so tired of men who act like they can't do anything around the house without being told! They can't see the dirty floor, the dirty toilet, the messy tables, the dishes piling up, any of it! Narcissistic personality disorder . They need to be the victim, always self-serving, never do anything for anyone who actually cares about them, even their family (especially the spouse). No doubt the guy was really competent at work and people thought he was “so nice.”

Thank you, Rachel for your rant about the "I don't know" fathers (and maybe some moms too). My favorite is "I'm helping. I help with diapers. I help..." What? Who are you "helping"? Are you a guest? Don't you live in your house? Clean up. Did she make the baby all by herself? Change a diaper and feed the kid. Do you think mothers were born knowing that stuff? Do you eat? Then do the damn dishes. It's not a bloody hotel.

When my son got diagnosed with autism (Aspergers) at 6 years old, my then husband (his father), was in TOTAL denial. He was NEVER home, for years I struggled with him, what we thought were nuclear meltdowns, horrible tantrums, etc. FINALLY had a diagnosis and with that, a course of therapy etc. BUT this also ALL fell upon me! Did it ever cross anyones mind she may have had post partum and that’s why she withdrew? She seems like a “take it on the chin” woman so i can see why she thought she could power through it. But man is he self involved to think everything was about him from her mom being there for her and “pushing him out” to him thinking the emotional changes of his wife -that just had a baby in a foreign country and you kicked out her mom- is once again all about him. It is astounding. The interview was self involved too. He spoke of her as a useful tool not his life partner. I truly hope her daughter grows to know her mom really loved her.

I bet that at least 3/5 of the men who say “she didn’t tell me to”, would, if told to, not actually do anything, either ignoring, making excuses, or doing it requiring so much instruction and so deliberately, poorly and hostilely that it’s more trouble than it’s worth to ask them to do anything. One thing that makes it even more suspicious that Jean didn’t know that Mengqi was missing, or that something had happened to her, is that Mengqi was still breast-feeding Anna right up until her death. And everyone that knew her was adamant that she would not leave her daughter willingly.

A group of us had gone out to walk Rockbridge, during the winter after she went missing, & I vividly remember smelling decamp. But it was a wooded area, & I grew up in a very rural area, so I just brushed it off as an animal being dead in the area.

Great work Rachel. I completely agree about the father not helping with the daughter. I always find it strange when a hear a father say,” I’m babysitting my children.” WTH???! You’re not babysitting your own children, you are being ( or should be) being a parent. The children are your responsibility, just as much as the mother. I will also call out mother’s who won’t let their partner help with their children or constantly criticize everything the other parent does with the children. I see that a lot also … where a father is truly trying to help but the mother will not allow it.

Unless one parent is a danger to the child, they should share the responsibility equally.
I actually once went out on a date with a guy who said he was a single father. For me, that was catnip, I don’t have kids but love them & I love the kind of guy who steps up for his children.
On our first date everything was great & we were discussing when to get together next. He couldn’t that weekend because he was babysitting. I asked who’s kid he’d be watching & he looked at me like he was confused & said “I thought I told you I have kids?”.
When it clicked, I just left. I never saw him again but heard he’d whined about it to mutual friends. He didn’t understand my problem since he’d told me. I did clarify with the friends. Being single and being a father doesn’t make you a single father. A single parent is one who, for a variety of reasons, is the primary/sole caretaker of a child. And no one “babysits” their own kids. That’s “parenting”.
Women who do this sort of thing, & I honestly have only seen 1 compared to dozens of men, are almost as bad.
I think there’s a little room for empathy because of the social stigma & shame a woman faces if she isn’t the primary. I can see not advertising something that gets instant judgement. But it’s still equal responsibility when you create a life.

You are so spot on about everything in this video. About the fathers, about the cycle of abuse, about how and why people go back. About screaming back is not abuse. About gaslighting. About isolating you (I'm sure she didn't want to go out because she didn't have time to after waiting on him hand and foot and he probably forbade her to anyway) About suddenly being so calm after going ballistic on you. Thank you for caring and doing such a good job. I was fortunate enough to finally get out and yes, I leant on my mom. And yes, I was terrified of him. Also a seemingly mild mannered intelligent man... but behind closed doors.... even my family didn't believe me till he started doing it to them too.
Thank you again Rachel and bless Anna and her mama and her grandparents 🙏

  • @calleigh4287
    @calleigh4287 2 роки тому +11

No need to apologize; domestic violence is something that is still exponentially underreported and ignored. There are so many women (and men) who never report domestic violence incidents; whether they’re being gaslit by the offender or don’t think it’s “bad enough to call the police” so many tend to make excuses for not going to authorities. It doesn’t help that often times these incidents aren’t taken seriously unless there’s massive amounts of evidence; usually it takes something really bad happening before authorities pay attention or help. Everyone has their genre of cases they’re particularly passionate about and shouldn’t feel any sort of way about it. I love that you bring light to “lesser known” cases and don’t just focus on cases in the spotlight or that have been done by everyone in the true crime space.

So true. I get very tired of hearing about “mutually abusive relationships” when that’s not what it really is. It’s like people can’t see who has all the power and who doesn’t have any. The skewed power dynamic isn’t taken into account. It’s as if they want to make everything “equal and balanced” or be “objective” or “neutral” or “fair.” But a relationship like that...there’s nothing equal or fair or balanced about it. One person dominates another person in the entire relationship and you just want to ask them how much “patience” they’d actually have if it was them in that situation. A lot of folks would lay blows back way sooner than any victim ever dared to. Idk why there’s such a blind spot like that with so many people and why victims so often get “half blamed.” My take on it is that anyone who could endure that without one little incident of pushing back...are they even human or are they a saint or what? Bcuz that is really a very normal reaction to being constantly beaten down by someone so abnormally abusive.

You have done an absolutely amazing job on this video. It’s incredibly sad. And thank you for saying what you said at the end. It’s so hard for people to understand why a victim stays or goes back to their abuser. We have to remember that it obviously wasn’t always this way. It’s almost always a slow erosion of one’s dignity and self. It’s over time that the abuser breaks down their victim. The psychological aspect of it is really important to understand because that is where the real damage occurs. Thank you for being you!

your comments regarding the "mutual abuse" excuse was so, so on point. i appreciate that so much. very timely with things in the news, and frustrating to see occurring constantly. it's also been shown that the victim will always take responsibility for their actions, while the abuser refuses. why is this so often taken at face value? why would the real abuser admit to everything when under scrutiny? that's not how abusers work. that's not the control they want to keep. they want to control the narrative, so they do what they can to highlight the victim's reactions over their own behaviors that drove them there.

Oh Rachel, this is so terribly tragic. I have a friend who is going through a situation with coercive control with her current partner and it is so hard to see what is happening. Seeing her act in ways that are not like her to stay in this relationship and not protect herself or accept help from those around her who are trying to get her out of the situation. There are so many women that just don't understand what a form of abuse this is not to mention the physical part that usually accompanies it. The victim's voices need to be heard and women need to be made aware of these cases so they can protect themselves and their children. Thank you for all the hard work that you do bringing these stories to us.
