I was traveling about 10 mph below the speed limit around 7PM. I was fully aware of my surroundings, however, a deer (about 350+ pounds) still managed to come out of nowhere and hit my car. Sometimes you don't see the deer until you hit them and there is zero time to react at all.
I attached mine to all four of my hubcaps and let me tell you, they work and sounds like a UFO, I was driving and seen about 8 deer's, they looked at my car and all ran into another car.
I have always had these on my cars. Now I live in Wisconsin. My landlord and his family have had deer collisions every year, sometimes more than one. I have had ZERO, NADA, not even a close call. Convince me they don't work. For under $10 a set, they are worth the money even if you are chronically skeptical or Anal Retentive.
I want to want them to work. However I've been watching and studying and no one has posed the question that I asked. If a deer is feeding on the side of the road and they hear this, they get spooked, then they run towards their safe zone and that happens to be back across the road did you just introduce a problem that wasn't there? If they are used to the sound of traffic and they are already not running I'm deducing that the only deer that people are hitting are the ones that are already spooked and running and no amount of whistle is going to stop them in their tracks. I'm still thinking about getting some just because I've heard a few people say they work, but I can't find any proof other than a few people's thoughts.
@@MrFordguy73it's kinda strange how everything published about this almost pushes people to not even try them, but there's plenty of people who claim to at least have reduced instances while having them, but all the studies have basically been lab style experiments, and no real life testing. Just seems like someone with the means to would actually conduct some real world testing.
I believe the deer hear them. I m in northern Alberta, Canada. A few times I have seen deer far away suddenely look towards me then run away. Can they prevent all deer collisions? Of course not but I think they help. I put them on the roof of my car not the front bumper. If they are on the front bumper they always get clogged with dirt, snow and ice but they stay pretty clean when they are mounted on the roof of the car. If they have sone a "study" that says they don't work, did they make sure the deer whistles on the front bumper weren't clogged up with dirt snow or ice? They stay much cleaner when they are the roof of your car.
If you’re driving, a tractor trailer semi hit your brakes that hissing sound that the air breaks makes makes the deer completely run the other way Works like a charm
Sadly the study just almost studied their effectiveness. They used a sound system, that could only produce 70 db before crapping out, that generated a pure tone that is almost what the deer alerts produce. To do it right would require two identical vehicles that have been tested in a wind tunnel to ensure that they both produce the exact same level/tones/types of noises. Then add the deer whistles to one, following instructions as closely as you can to ensure proper mounting. Then driving around a couple hundred meters behind one another for days on end, if not months or years. Then you'd have to also ensure that the two vehicles both spent an equal amount of time, deer interactions, as the lead vehicle. And you'd have to film everything outside the vehicles from inside the vehicles (dash board cameras). Finally you'd have to have the films reviewed without sound and without anyone knowing which vehicle produced said film. Things to also ensure, both vehicles keep their windows up the whole time, they both run their AC/heater systems at exact same levels, and if they have their radios on, that they both are on the same station and playing at the same volume. And you'd need to re-verify from time to time that both vehicles still produce the same sound when no deer whistles are mounted; which means both should be fitted with deer whistles in exact same locations, then removed (since they usually have a base that gets mounted permanently while the whistles could be removed). But that's if you wanted to be super thorough. You could just use one vehicle, add dash cams, and mount deer whistles. Just adding/removing the deer alerts to their bases every other day, then have the films analyzed in a blind study, as stated before, at the end. After all of that, you'd still not have the answer even if the study said there was no change in deer behavior. You'd need to go through every single deer vs auto accident to discover which did or did not have the whistles; plus figuring out the rates of deer whistles within the community. Just to see if just by being the type of driver who would install one meant that you were able to avoid accidents with deer more than those who never felt the need, or even if having them increased chance of accidents because of overconfidence. Because having them may not alter deer behavior, it might indicate the human behavior of people concerned enough to add them to their autos; which might also indicate a safer, more alert, driver; or not. Isn't science fun? EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention you'll need half a dozen, maybe a dozen vehicles (or two or three), just so you can test as many different brands/designs as possible. Again, one car could work, but that would take forever... Beyond the forever you'll need to take to begin with. And that wind tunnel can also be used to discover minimal speeds needed to best create sound, and how different speeds angles of crosswind effect the noise... There's like two or three dozens things you'd also have to properly take into consideration... Fun, fun, fun!
Used them for years and saw the deer running from my vehicle on several occasions. Wind, trees and surrounds can affect how they work so they are not 100% like many expect from them. Even if they alert half of the time that lowers chances of accident. My brother has wrecked on like 5 deer in is life and I have hit none/always used the whistles. Maybe i'm just lucky.
I can't prove they work, but I can tell you my experience. I recently narrowly missed a deer I did not see coming, and realized I had neglected long enough putting deer whistles on my 4Runner. I have had them on a month and twice since then I have encountered deer that stopped at the road, turned and looked at me, and ran back the way they came. I installed a pair on a friend's car and the same thing happened to her on the highway. I have the kind that are double pipes on each side and cost $2.75 a pair on ebay. Maybe they don't work, but I'm not out much for just in case they do. I have had them on other vehicles I owned and have seen the same reaction from deer many times.
I have had them on every vehicle I have owned and I have seen a deer turn its head and go back into the forest? I know 10 people who would say they do work. But not during rutting season. My Aunt had them on her car for 10 years. She drove the same route ever day. When she bought a new car she forgot all about them. Two weeks later wham. $4000 dollars in damage.
Thomas Hendershot my parents always had them also. We could clearly see them raise their heads and head away from the noise. I just bought my first pair. Putting them on today. I am starting to babysit a new granddaughter and have to drive some distance in the country. A few years ago I was driving to her house and a darn deer ran into the side of my van sliding door. Didn’t dent it but left scratches 😢. Scratches are still there. My van is driftwood color and I am constantly getting hit. It is like things can’t see it. 😳
Well you could just do what my friend did back home and leave your snow plow on your truck all year long. He said he hit a deer almost every week. They just bounced to the side of the road. Can't imagine that was good for the plow...
The blaring air horn on my semi doesn't even make deer look up from their grazing. Can't imagine that a sub-audible whistle would have any effect whatsoever.
Same here, including twice in the last month. I installed them on a friend's car and the same thing happened to her last week. I got mine on ebay for about $2.75 for a pair and are the kind that are double pipes on each side. Cheap enough for just in case they do work.
If they make noise, then they work ! The dear don't run away or freeze in their tracks; these pieces of plastic are not magic wards. What they DO is cause the dear to look up to see what the noise is; and at that point you see their eyes glowing from your headlights, the avoiding part is still up to you !
I have seen deer stop at the road, turn and look at me, and run back the way they came with my new deer whistles. On other vehicles I have owned they stopped at road edge, turned and looked at me, and did not run out in front of me. My old deer whistles were all the conventional kind. My new ones are double pipes on each and have no opening on the back. The opening on the back is supposed to make that one not as loud as the other and goes on the driver's side. Mine should all be loud and there are four pipes instead of two, so the new ones are likely louder than the old ones. I got them at ebay for less than $3 a pair.
I bought a pair - over paid - Jeeze 99¢ would be the right price, my co-worker said she was constantly hitting deer until she bought them- I totaled out a car hitting a deer so I bought some for $7.
The deer don’t hear the whistle they sense it. That why they work! Ask the Iowa highway patrol. In A 10 year study the incidents of deer v patrol vehicle were cut in half after whistles were outfitted on their vehicles.
U never see a deer they always come out of noware, your headlights illuminate the other side of the highway so all the deer see is an open clear area to cross hwy never the cars . Then BOOM
no matter if these work or not for deer...how much is this going to bother my dog.they will be placed at the front of my truck if i do throw them on...but this would produce the same db as a dog whistle would it not? i take my dog everywhere i go so this may be a problem.
They help with the deer but the pitch is so high it damages a squirrels hearing beyond repair and they end up wandering into the roadway and get killed because they cant hear anymore.
Well they sold a couple of million of them …so just goes to show how many suckers are out there… wish I would of thought of it😁 Maybe I could come up with something different, like a fake dummy on my roof with a 3030 rifle 🧐
Wilfredo posted he wants a "whistle that sounds like a fucking lion." Well... In North America since their are no uncaged wild lions other than mountain lions, ocelots, margays, lynx, bobcats, jaguar ,cougar, Jaguarundi and since bambi has never heard a lion fucking and is such a curious animal , the sound a of lion fucking would probably draw bambi closer with that deer in the headlight look to investigate . A better idea would be taping a mad barking dog and play that while going down the road, I have never seen a deer investigate a barking dog.....they turn and wave their tail.. And If you a have a AZZ for a neighbor you don't like , play the barking dog tape when you drive by his/her house. What does a train horn fucking sound like... Choo Choo

Wish more people would understand this.

@E. N 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
😂😂😂😂😂
@E. N it’s a joke
what brand
Lol, that's pretty funny, but honestly it's about as intelligent as most of these studies that claim they are completely in ineffective.
I want a whistle that sounds like a fucking lion. That will scare them away.
I'm going to buy me a fucking train horn and a Mad Max brush guard.
Did you buy one? 9 years later and inquiring minds wanna know.
The deer whistle saves you from sticking your head out the window while you're driving
I also thing they should make deer whistles sound like shotgun blasts
I have always had these on my cars. Now I live in Wisconsin. My landlord and his family have had deer collisions every year, sometimes more than one. I have had ZERO, NADA, not even a close call. Yup I've always had them can't hurt that's for sure

Shell oil trucks had 8 deer involved collisions. They added the whistle to the trucks and haven't had one since.

Works like a charm
Just get a 100 watt speaker, put it on your car, and blare Ozzy Osbourne in the middle of the night.
Or you could remove your mufflers...
Or just get a straight pipe
Sadly the study just almost studied their effectiveness.

Or ... A few different fleet management companies could equip half their fleets with them and run some way more vague averages
“Deer are everywhere this time of year”. Yes because of the rest of the year lady they go to mars
Trevor freed bahaaaaaaaaaa
Lmao, thats a good one
Just pay the Deer Association before you enter their zone. They won't send their suicide squad for you, mark my words.

Maybe you are just smarter than your brother or you have a better sense of situational awareness.

I love to buy these and stick them somewhere inconspicuous on a friends car
I have had them on every vehicle I have owned and I have seen a deer turn its head and go back into the forest? hhhmmmm
Rondo Schiavoni me also!
I will always have these on my car
I guess they do work Il always buy them for truck and car .
me too! my dad had them in the 80s and 90s and i have seen them run away.
Thea P. I've noticed a couple times the deer are on the side of the road and just stop and don't jump out in road

You wouldn't want to run over your dear, eh buds?! :-)
I have to agree with you. I see less deer than I have before, and when I do see them the deer seem alert.
you can buy them at just about any store??
I bought a pair - over paid - Jeeze 99¢ would be the right price, my co-worker said she was constantly hitting deer until she bought them- I totaled out a car hitting a deer so I bought some for $7.
Deer whistles are now electronic. Do the electronic Deer Whistles work?
I have bought five packages.
On the five only one whistle in each pack worked .I know cause I blew thru them.
Why is this .

Here's the real question, why does Wilfredo think sounds of lions having sex will drive deer away?
I have them just to annoy the hunters.
Lol ok? Don't waste 5 bucks to save yourself possibly thousands?
they can be a good cosmetic investment, modify your vehicle with those things. Make designs
a 350 pound deer lol that's as much as a hog.
*proved
They don’t work at all Scare more a deer and will come to you
False
