Very peaceful and informative. Love your work! I’m retired, former art major and have finally started cutting the rocks I have collected. This is all so new to me. I’ve ordered your book. My best friend and I taught middle school art together when we were fresh out of college. We promised one day when we retire, we will do art together. We both are ceramicists and 46 years later, we meet at our senior center’s wonderful ceramics room once a week.😃 She did a lot of mosaic projects with her students. I showed her your work and she loves it too!🥰 So she’ll be coming over to my Artist Asylum ( she named it😁) to do rock mosaics with me. I’ve turned my garage into the crafting hangout of my dreams. Thank you Rachel for sharing your expertise with us.
Just amazingly beautiful!! Did you add colorant to the self leveling cement? If so, what type? Would thinset be a decent substitute for self leveling cement? Thank you! Love your work!!
Thank you. Yes, I added pigment to the self-levelling cement - I use pigments that are designed for colouring cement - usually oxides. You can use thinset to fill negative space in a mosaic - it will create a different kind of surface (less smooth) but it's probably easier to use and apply.
Absolutely love this. What did you use to keep the mosaic together when you changed colours of the background? What clamps are they? Was self leveling cement used for the entire background?
Thanks for watching! The clamp is one used for making frames - all the four corners are connected with a strap so it can be pulled tight around the frame. Yes, the background is all self-levelling cement - you can see me put a spare piece of board (covered in sellotape) down during the first pour to keep a space for the sky clear until the sea dried.
Thanks Carol! Self-levelling cement is a compound used for levelling a surface before flooring is installed, so usually comes in big bags (20-25kg) I got mine at my local tile store. I believe Mosaic Arts Online also sell smaller quantities if you purchase their course by Arianna Gallo that teaches this technique in more detail.
Thank you Rachel, I did purchase the Gallo course, but I can’t seem to find that self leveling cement locally and I don’t want to buy tiny amount from mail order , (MAO). Love your videos!!!❤
So intricate and beautiful
Thank you 😊
Bellisimooooo!!!

Loved watching this process Rachel. Was that self levelling cement you used or grout?
Thanks for watching Dionne - it was self levelling cement x
Hi Rachel. I loved this. Can these mosaics go outside or would the frost force the stones out?

May I ask what type of stone that is? And also, the green is smalti? This is so beautiful!
Thank you! I used some sandstone and travertine, and the green is porcelain tile (winckelmans)
@@racheldaviesmosaics thank you so much!

@@carolzutski7739it might be worth speaking to your local tile store - mine didn’t carry it as standard but were happy to order me a bag.
