You can't go wrong with any SL in my book. The 2003 Sl55 AMG with the turbine wheels is my favorite. When it first came out it looked like the future, and they still have presence on the road. I drive a 2004 CLK500 Coupe, in Los Angeles, CA.
My favorit is the R129. My Dad had one when i was i kid, it was my absolutly dream car! We have it still in the garage, but now my das is driving a R230. I'm from Germany, just about 1 hour drive from the MB Factory and just about 2 hours from Affalterbach, the factory of AMG :-)
The R230. Because I had one that was a 2005 SL55AMG white with red interior... Lovely... It had the performance package which it looked amazing!!! And why? Just because the sound that makes that massive V8 was amazing!
My favorite SL? Hmm. Let me say it like that: The old SL like the first Gullwing and a bit later the roadster look good on pictures , private garages and car meets and all that sort of stuff but they don't exactly live up to what we would expect from the name SL today. That's its ability to cruise along delivering comfort while having the power and size of a sports car. No old SL can deliver the comfort of a new one. That's why my favorite SL is always the newest one. Actually the name SL once stood for "Superleicht" = super light" at Mercedes but the car eventually developed in a more heavy one to deliver the comfort. So the abbreviation not really makes sense today ;)
SL still stands for Sport Leicht, not Superleicht. (But it means just the same + it is sporty) It meant to be a light car bit it isn't anymore. Greetings from Germany.
Again very enjoyable to watch ;-). For me ofc the first SL300 Gullwing (with aluminium body) is the finest by far in terms of looks and concept. However the one that made me smile the most when hearing about it was the R129 SL 73AMG, a beast with 7.3L v12, producing 525hp and 750NM of torque, the same engine used, altough heavily modified, in the Pagani Zonda!!! The looks were awesome imo. The technique was very reliable and more then enough luxury as well. And it's very rare, only 85 were made ever for special customers of mercedes benz, making it much rarer then the SL300! You could not walk to the mercedes dealer and buy one, you had to have some special connection to mercedes to get one. So for me it earned it's place next to the original SL300. Greetings from Belgium :-).
Great video I've been waiting to see some more about the new SL. My favourite would be the pre-facelift R230 in black. Looks great, has modern safety features and has depreciated a lot..
The head lights....just doesn't look right....this could be the last SL63, which will take a while to get use to. The front grill though...upside down?
Love the R230 Generation as I think it was the last truly good looking well sized SL. Would love to have a 2009 SL65 in white with red interior and black wheels. If money was no option I'd go for a SL65 AMG Black Series of the same generation. Either way I'd require a unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty and 24 hour roadside assistance. Also a trip to Renntech would most definitely be in order! Cheers- CK
Motoman, you should think about talking about some of the comments that answer your questions. That way people know that you see their comments. Plus it may give others an incentive to leave a comment that normally wouldn't.
+daryl Jackson Hey Daryl, Thanks for reaching out . . . We've been actually doing this for a long while now - it is called #AskMotoManTV . It is a separate format of the show where I answer viewer questions and respond to comments. You can see one here: ua-cam.com/video/kBvMOASojp0/v-deo.html
I think the Gullwing would also be my favorite, but in the later years the 2008 SL 65 Black series. I have a question motoman, I currently drive a 2016 AMG C63 S, and it has the auto start/stop feature. My question is, do you think it's bad for the turbos to use the start/stop function? I am not a mech, but I feel like this is a bad thing. I live in Germany and drive the autobahn frequently, going 150mph then coming to a stop seems like a bad idea. It doesn't sound like the turbos are running, I know they have a pump in the transmission to keep the fluid going, but how do you feel about the turbos? Thanks.
Honestly how is this current SL any different from the R230?? IDK but I am curious as to what the next gen SL will be. I guessing a rag top version of the AMG GT. Favorite SL is the original Gullwing. No explanation necessary.
It cannot be winter in most parts of the world, it can only be winter for a quarter of the year in the northern hemisphere and a quarter in the southern hemisphere. This is because winter is an equal quarter of the calendar shared with 3 other seasons. However in many places around the equator, the seasons make little difference, so one would have no interest in complaining about winter.
Favourite is the new 2017 SL 63. Good balance of power to weight. Also realistically the price hike to a 65 is just too much. Right now I drive a 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Rally Ediiton.

I prefer this new generation because of the technology and maybe the looks. I would like the classic SL400 I live in London,UK and I drive a honda motorcycle haha
+youngprankster94 actually there are no Merc taxi here. most of them obviously is the London taxi - black cab. then there are loads of private companies used as taxi cars. ***** Yeah sure you are buying the Brand and Prestige with an AMG. But for only 20K or 30K extra is fucking stupid. Go drive one. My friend had a SL550, and that costs twice as a mustang GT. It was a bit faster and so much better in every other way. Is it worth the 100K price compared to the about 40K mustang? Not really as a car, maybe worth 75-85k. But the Brand is another 15K. Still 100% worth the money.
Wow!!! They really streamlined it. It looks exciting for younger affluent millennials, the ones that will drive the ferraris, 911s, etc. and for far less. Does it drive as well???

+MotoManTV I watch and enjoy your videos. I'm just seeing a slew of exotic car reviews lately by just about everyone, including a greater emphasis on these 1 percenter cars in the car mags. Did an exotic car circus come to town or something? I fail to see how this can improve subscriptions for any involved. By the way, your list above may be suitably plebian but they're hardly cars any enthusiast would choose. Those people might tune in once to see a review of a car they're shopping, but they won't be back. They're shopping for an appliance. I'm talking attainable sport and cars that people who love cars would like to know about even if not buying one. S60/V60, 4 series gran coupe, X3(do you know how long it's been since anyone has seriously reviewed an X3?, about five years!), Ford Edge Sport, new Camaro, etc. And 3 episodes on an SL?
+Bruno TaTa Hi Again, Bruno. Definitely a fair point - one I will try to break down for you. So when we decide to film a specific car, there are a couple of moving parts that go in to the decision: 1. Timely access to the car. 2. The car itself 3. Trending data. So for the first, timely access, I have mentioned this in the past when people ask why we don't feature certain cars - like JLR, Ford and Chrysler. If we don't receive timely access to the car - meaning we get the car much later than other outlets, then we will not see any ROI for the shoot. Thus, no matter how much we love a certain car - like classic cars - we just can't prudently run our business losing money on production. Then the second point, the car itself. Good, bad or indifferent - if it is subscriptions you are asking about - that is fancy cars ALL DAY LONG. Does not have to be Exotics but Benz, Audi, Vettes, Porsche and especially BMW drives our subscriptions more than any other brands. While we do well with Hyundai and GM products, they do not drive subscriptions as most views on those episodes come from suggested search, where a Mercedes episode will see a higher percentage of returning subscribers. The last point is trending data. When we first started shooting cars, we shot everything. We also lost A LOT of money. If you have been with us for a while, you may have noticed a dramatic increase in views and subscribers. That is because we have become far more disciplined in point one above - timely access - combined with understanding which cars have higher search trends. That is why we feature Hyundais, Kias, Chevrolet, SUVs as well as some others as a mix to the heavy metal of this episode. That said, if you go back, we do feature A LOT of affordable sports and sporty cars - Nissan NISMO 370z, 2016 Camaro, Buick Cascada, Audi TT, MINI and more . . . At the end of the day, we are on a journey here - that is to experience different cars - whether they be attainable by the every man or not. WAYYYYYYY back in the day when I started this show, I asked myself what I had a burning desire to do on the show - that was what most car guys would want to experience: If you could have access to any car, what would you do with it? Hope that clarifies things a bit . . . Good discussion.
The gullwing is my favorite SL, but Mercedes is falling short in the interior dept. Who in their right mind wants a white interior. Also the S class cars have all of these ugly color combos like black and brown together. Obviously the people at the company are not looking back at the beautiful coordinated interiors of the past that made Mercedes popular and famous. I have never met anyone that wanted a white interior in a car. Don't any of you people have kids or grandkids ? They finally came to the party and started putting darker footwells but the colors they are using in the cars are just terrible including that horrid light gray. They have no blue interiors any longer and the interiors don't look good together with the colors they are using.... it's a shame.
Mercedes design language is so freaking boring and over used by now! Every single car looks like the S Class, and now every MB sports car i gonna look like the AMG GT
Finally we got a good looking Merc again... Took them a while.
You can't go wrong with any SL in my book. The 2003 Sl55 AMG with the turbine wheels is my favorite. When it first came out it looked like the future, and they still have presence on the road.

My favorite SL generation would have to be R129. Great body lines, handsome looks, and just a timeless style. Hello hello from Atlanta, GA!
MotoMan and a new Mercedes AMG..Life is good!
My favorite SL is the last black series model!
+DasHnezz Edits. That car was a beast, on the top of the piedestal for me
2008 SL 65 AMG Black Edition in White, super rare, insanely fast, and looks like a Racecar
The front looks much better now. But still not as good as the R230 5th generation pre face lift to me.
@MotoManTV I am loving the stream of content!
~The level of technology with these cars is staggering!
~R.
My favorite sl is also the old gullwing 300sl. I live in America and currently drive an 08 Infiniti M35
Great video I've been waiting to see some more about the new SL.
My favourite would be the pre-facelift R230 in black. Looks great, has modern safety features and has depreciated a lot..
Hey MotoMan, do you still like this 2017 SL63?
The head lights....just doesn't look right....this could be the last SL63, which will take a while to get use to. The front grill though...upside down?
Of course the 54 Sl is the stuff, not the recent gull wing. But this one is really nice and look forward to the first drive.
Which do you prefer, the SL550 or Aston Martin V8. Thanks.
Keep up the Mercedes Benz, favorite brand!!!
+youngprankster94 sounds like you're a Porsche fanboy... Nothing wrong with that, but don't pester me for being one when you clearly are as well...
Love the R230 Generation as I think it was the last truly good looking well sized SL. Would love to have a 2009 SL65 in white with red interior and black wheels. I would prefer any 2017 Mercedes Benz SL, as long as it's a V8! The Gullwing is nice, but I just loooove the gadgets in a new car!
AMG should come out with a R231 SL65 Black Series. There's still a loyal following for their hand-built V12s.
Motoman, you should think about talking about some of the comments that answer your questions. That way people know that you see their comments. Plus it may give others an incentive to leave a comment that normally wouldn't.

this bonnet isnt so long in fact. foot rest is placed on middle of bonnet. and this under hood rayout is looks alike a typical e class

Didn't you drive an E350 convertible recently?
Thank you; entertaining and informative.
I think the Gullwing would also be my favorite, but in the later years the 2008 SL 65 Black series. Favorite SL is the original Gullwing. No explanation necessary.
What is the exact color name from this Mercedes SL ?
A 190SL roadster, I love classic cars.
I live in Belgium.
And I drive a Skoda Superb Combi.
Škoda superb is one of my favorite cars, but I live in USA so I can't have one:( you are lucky
+Joel BIelecki that's a shame really, they make great cars. I don't think they plan to export Skoda to the US, too much inhouse competition for VW.

I own Mercedes SL55 AMG
one word AMAZING
I'm a fan of the Pagoda SL. Own a W202. Region: USA (MA).

The R129 is my favorite SL … especially the rare AMG models or the SL600 Silver Aero.
The SL (design wise) went downhill afterwards … I understand it’s a low volume model, but at some point Mercedes have to:
A) Start with a clean sheet design.
B) Retire the legend.
Why do I have a feeling that the 3rd video involves driving a Black Gullwing with a mint interior somewhere in Texas ? ;)
+IceDree I WISH!
AMG makes the best v8 exhaust notes!
Shame it hasn't got the same grill (the small chrome dots in circles looks better than it sounds lol) as the rest of the latest mercs
+Stephen Butler None of the AMG cars do
Max Boulton a real shame. That grill is nice more angory, but not as nice imo as the current stock Mercedes-Benz.
I prefer this new generation because of the technology and maybe the looks.
I would like the classic SL400
I live in London,UK and I drive a honda motorcycle haha
+youngprankster94 actually there are no Merc taxi here.

Well done.
S-Class Coupe would be my pick if I wanted a cruising Merc.
SL 280 my nabor had one in 1980 and it was old back in 1980.... Only SO CA Dude 92663
Keeeeeep it ,, ur way is great.
The front grill looks abit like the SRTs
I live in France, drive to work in Germany. My cars are Clio RS, Renault Laguna break and my newcomer - M-B SL600 (1995). With $160k the choice could only be the SL 63 AMG. Why? Although fit and youthful in the beginning of my 60s, I find my SL low enough to get into. 911 is lower, bumpier (bad back)and has no luggage space out of view. It's at the cusp of being a toy. I went shopping in the SL this week and got it all in the boot. In the SL63 I could take luggage - small case, 2 suit carriers etc when i go to Frankfurt - 600kms one way. Jaguar, all second- hand Italian exotica are all toys too - and even less comfortable and with less luggage space. With the years I get less willing to accept compromise; the little things p_ss me off more and more. And for that money I HAVE to have the option of roof down, if this were to be my only car
2002-2007 because have the best exhaust sound and its good look car
2008? That was the best looking sl55!
Hi,moto man
I get very bored watching your reviews, and believe me, getting me bored is the most difficult task when it comes to cars.
Nice!!!
The front lights look strange
they should have redesigned the dashboard while they were at it.
where is the interior?
Can I have a language question here: what are the last two words Moto Man said? He said "until then, beesh beta"
+Zelin Li Bis Spater . . . . Directly translated as 'Til Later' meaning - see you later or as I mean it - our conversation does not end, it continues in a different episode/topic.
The gull wing's an sls not sl
They make a facelift and did not even put the new displays from the S class in the (S)L ? I guess thats for the new generation then.
I know right
good car
mine is a toss up between the second gen and the third gen SL but who am i kidding im an-slk owner myself and it's the perfect size for me :>

+Torrey B Selenite Grey.
semen gray

R129. Overengineering. "The Best or Nothing"
Rev engine like that and then immediately shut him down is extremely bad for turbo :(. Technical knowledgeable guy like you should know this and never do that even if car is only press.
10 minutes to tell me about HP and Torque figures, thanks for the efforts man, but I will pass next time.....

These AMG engines are hand checked at most, they are so mass produced that it's impossible to be hand-build, but Mercedes always tricks us with their marketing stunt, from numbers that make no sense to this
+Daniel Maia Those engines are not mass produced genius. How many people do you know own a 150-200K car?
***** Because unlike American cars, they don't just upgrade the Engine. Suspension, brakes, sway bars, everything else is added to AMG.
Still 100% worth the money.
fantastic¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
This guy is always digressing! Lol reviews are great nonetheless
My wife wants one of these... ha!

I'd take a 6 series anyday over the SL.
+Yung Dro Yeah I agree, the new 6 series finally has the looks to match the BMW driving dynamics.
+Yung Dro First you should take an education.

Need a anti emetic tablet after all that HAND MOVEMENT.....🤮
Ugliest SL ever produced
Mercedes design language is so freaking boring and over used by now! Every single car looks like the S Class, and now every MB sports car i gonna look like the AMG GT
