Don't judge, but after reading the script for Duel of the Fates I wish Trevorrow had done the ENTIRE Sequel Trilogy. Dude clearly GOT Star Wars and embraced the Prequels, Original Trilogy AND Legends while also actually building off of Force Awakens AND Last Jedi in fresh and interesting ways.
Obviously I believe George Lucas should’ve done the sequel trilogy, but if not him, then yes I agree, the DOTF script was freaking badass, and he should’ve done the sequels if not GL.

Bob Iger was the one who said they could only push from May to December of the same year, and required yearly releases. Everyone involved in the movies knew they were rushed. And honestly, in such a rushed environment, I understand why they canned Trevorrow after *The Book of Henry* came out. They were scared. We don't know who ultimately made that call, but Iger is the villain of the ST. He insisted that Episode IX be his big finale for his retirement. KK has produced some of the greatest films of all time. Lucas handpicked her. Iger is the bureaucrat who screwed the whole thing. HOWEVER, I do not understand how JJ came in to do IX, read Finn's Coruscant uprising story, and threw it out. Totally boneheaded move.
I can’t help but think the whole sequel trilogy would have been better if they had actually spent more tine writing a decent plot for the whole three FIRST rather than ad-hoc as they went along. What a waste of an opportunity .
The "story chain" aspect of it was the most frustrating thing ever, ... ok go... writes wildly ... go writes wildly, go... but they hate everythnhg, MORE MERCHANDISING!!

I agree on it being a double bladed lightsaber but.... i think it could still be yellow because yellow is the coulour of the jedi temple guard and rey in tge end becomes the guardian of the galaxy because she is the last jedi
Can we petition for something similar to the ‘Snyder cut’ for this version of the film? I would love to actually see this movie done and put in theatres or on Disney plus. I think it would be a more redeeming thing for Disney Star Wars films and I’m sure some other fans wouldn’t disagree. This is only my opinion though.
That's a cool idea and all. But I feel like instead they should scrap the whole franchise. So Dave fionli and John favreau can do whatever he wants, with the mando, Luke, grogu, ashoka, and etc I don't want that to be held back by episode 7.
I appreciate how DOTF actually tried to be a proper conclusion to everything that came before. It felt like a sequel to TLJ and even TFA (like it answers questions from TFA that even TROS didn't get to). It feels like more of a cap to the first 6 movies and even the tv shows. And whether you agree with Rey's conclusions at the end, her arc and the way she finds balance actually gives the ST a reason for existing. That's my take anyway.
Yeah, this would’ve saved the ST for me. The only thing that I still wouldn’t like is Luke but everything else would’ve been way more tolerable if we got this version of Episode 9.
It would’ve actually made Rose and Finn better characters… instead of basically writing them out of the movie and relegating them to side characters Hux also would’ve been scary again like he was in TFA instead of a goofball loser like he was in rise of Skywalker

Kylo's redemption ark and Hux's "redemption" ark (if you can call it that) are the worst that I have EVER seen. Hux became a comically incompitent general who is also a spy, and Kylo became just a bland copy of his grandfather.
While I respect the opinion, I disagree. Imo TLJ took Finn from being someone who was loyal to Rey (he says enough times in TFA he's doing everything to get to/help Rey), not the Resistance. His arc in TLJ is seeing why the Resistance exists and why he has to help them - leading to him literally trying to lay down his life to save the Resistance as a whole on Crait. But in TROS, I agree. They did nothing with him and wasted him.

@@REDDAWNproject Read my comment again and you'll see his arc wasn't the same - it's similar, but as I said nuanced, and Poe being on Canto Bight wouldn't have fit the story. Plus what would Finn have done on the ship? Finn needed to learn the lesson that, yes, he knew about suffering, but that it wasn't just about him and his experiences and personal loyalties (his arc in TFA), there was a much bigger picture. Poe needed to be on the ship because he had a lot to learn about that type of leadership and hope to succeed. He needed to go from hotshot pilot to collected leader as basically Leia's heir.
Honestly Star Wars should have just expanded through stand alone movies and spin offs. Trying to top Luke's trilogy is honesty a waste of time. Yes the prequels aren't liked by all, but at least it has an outline and strong story! 7, 8 & 9 have no consistency or thought out plan. All of the movies have their moments, but the latest trilogy really was a let down 😔
As someone who really doesn't like the 1st 2nd and 3rd movies I can say they're 1000% better than the inconsistent dumbester fire that is the 7th 8th and 9th movies.
The prequels tell one coherent story, and despite all its awkward parts, it tells that story really well. The sequels had nothing to say and no coherence, and honestly I don't know that RoS had even one good moment.
The prequels should have been so much better. The Anakin to Darth Vader story was rushed and really poorly done. Yes, they had an outline, but that's the nature of prequels. - they already had a pre-defined destination they had to reach. The sequel trilogy pretty much had a blank page and could potentially have been awesome but were ruined by the chopping and changing of directors and resulting lack of cohesive storyline. Such missed opportunities - both prequels and sequels. If only they'd just stuck with the original trilogy!
I agree Duel of the Fates would have been a much better movie although I really didn't like the whole Rey is in love with Poe thing. And personally I felt like both Rey and kylo should have died at the end making the end of Star Wars be also the end of the Jedi and the Sith. I really loved Reys double bladed lightsaber and Finns overall arch in it. Not sure what they would have done with Liea maybe just replace her with Lando? Or even Maz Kanata whom I thought should have been in the sequels alot more.
Truly. I'm a big Star Wars fan, and I LOVE literally EVERYTHING that I have ever seen/read/played from SW media as of july 2022. EXCEPT the Rise of Skywalker. It forever will be a big stain on this franchise for me. That shit deserves to be decanonized. I'm pretty sure literally anyone can grab a Duel of the Fates script, toss away the story desicions they don't like, replace them with their own, tweek it all a little bit and get a movie that is millions of times better than... whatever the hell this was.
I think the biggest issue Lucasfilm had was that it would have required a recasting of Leia as she was very central to Trevorrow's story. The story itself was excellent and tied elements of Force lore from The Clone Wars in too. Such a shame it was binned in favour of TROS
JJ Abrams is great in creating a buzz for a movie. Hey, let’s have that Boyega guy with a lightsaber. Hey let’s have Gwendolyn Christie as a chromium trooper. Hey, let’s throw in Palpatine for good measure. What he is not great in is combining all these things into one coherent vision.

Yes. Exactly right. Duel of the Fates needed some more editing, some of the ideas were not fully fleshed out, but it made much more sense thematically--giving some coherence to the sequel trilogy, and to the saga as a whole. Clearly, Disney didn't like the grey jedi direction. A compromise could have been: Not so much that balance is a balance between dark and light, but true "light" is not the dogmatic fundamentalism of the Jedi. In a sense, the prequel era Jedi had come close to the dark side with their lack of balance. In my mind, that makes more sense than a blend of dark and light. More that the Jedi had lost track of what the light is really about.
I think seeing finn be "awakened" by the force and defecting would've been a better story than the trilogy we had, I feel like boyega would've made a really good force user/Jedi
He was fine as it was; I liked the idea to have Rey to be the new protagonist; but instead of make Finn a janitor basically, they could have him continue to grow and as force user, hold his own against the enemies. He is a great character in the first movie that is totally wasted in the following movies

Strangely I enjoyed it in the cinema but have no desire to re-watch. On reflection it is an absolute mess of a plot and the resurrection of the emperor is terrible.
I guarantee that the negative reviews from TLJ prompted Lucasfilm to oust Trevorrow and replace him with Abrams. See, Lucas didn’t heed the backlash from the prequels enough: Disney took it too literally, resulting in TROS. Motto from this: there are times when you DO listen to fans, and there are times when you DON’T
I will have to agree with you. It would have made the sequel trilogy much better if Disney had ignored the more vocal critics of TLJ and let Trevorrow do what he wanted in the first place.
@@mikeor- they failed because they worked on them one film at a time, there was no overarching vision for the ENTIRE trilogy, George Lucas did it for the prequels, and he even gave Disney his ideas for the sequel trilogy, but they threw them in the trash.
@@joermnyc Rian and Colin actually had been working together, largely off the work Lawrence Kasdan had been doing for episode 7. But when Kasdan pulled out Abrams was left to do all of 7 himself and Disney didn't give him the time to start over so he reverted, to a degree, to the greatest hits for TFA. Rian decided not to go back to the start amd rework his script from the ground up to incorporate JJ's version of 7, only changing what he had to to make it work. And then colin left. The problem wasn't that there was no plan, there was a plan, but two of the three imvolved were pushed out because of corporate meddling and their replacement had to rush his work both times.
Yeah, this and Episode 2 are my least favorite in the franchise. Episode 2 for how slow, boring and terribly handled the love story was, and Episode 9 for trying so hard to please everybody that they pleased nobody. Duel of Fates actually sounds awesome… shame they didn’t go through with it.
No one sequel movie can be laid to blame.... the first was a reductive, the next was a manboy trying simply to be contrary, the last was tail between legs embarrassment. Let's just draw a line under them and even if we think they look pretty, sound good and had potentially good ideas, that the whole sequel arch is an artistic and cinematic failure.
my favorite was how Ray can even stand in a battle with Kylo Ren who’s been training to be a sith lord and who was training to be a jedi even before that. and the obvious that they just destroyed luke skywalker

@@michelangelo5903 he was basically like darth maul in phantom menaces power level, except he was conflicted and heavily injured. He was going against a force user who is shown to be a great fighter, especially with melee weapons throughout the film. Also speaking of maul, why do people only call Rey a Mary Sue, and not other SW protagonists like Obi-Wan, a Jedi padawan who beat maul when even his master couldn’t? This has always been a thing in SW, it’s not a flaw, it’s just something you have to accept or else the stories won’t work.

I just realized how awesome a Disney+ spinoff series following the path Fin takes to become a jedi would be. He could traveling the galaxy training and finding old jedi temples and texts, learning the wisdom from when jedi truly were the guardians of of peace and democracy, and lost jedi skills. There could be a series with Rey finding a jedi holocron in Luke's cottage with a list of force sensitive kids, then traveling the world to find them all and bring them to a safe zone. After the the 2 first seasons are done, it could then become a multi season series where the two of them train a new generation of jedi, while traveling the galaxy spreading the knowledge of the jedi, and fighting dark force users. But, there's probably a reason I'm not a screenwriter.
It could actually be a truer sequel to episode 8, showing that anyone can be “special”, Finn travelling to build not the old Jedi order, but something wholly new.

The empire was destroyed and gone and they shouldn't have had a knock off empire (first order) and no matter how good the characters were or the action these movies always would have sucked because they did the same rebels vs empire all over again and no one wanted to see that we wanted to see something new and interesting not a shitty ripoff of the original trilogy.

I would love it, but am not sure actors would come back. John Bogoya kinda hates Disney for how Finn was screwed over and other actors aren't interested in coming back. However Affleck and Cavil said the same, but immediately came back when the Snyder cut was greenlit, so fingers crossed.
According to some interpretations of the first 2 seasons of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm is softly de-canonizing the Sequel Trilogy as it further integrates "the Filoni-verse" into the overall story. The biggest wild card may be the World Between Worlds introduced in the last season of Rebels, which enabled Ahsoka to escape her lightsaber duel with Vader. It might be just wishful thinking, but Ahsoka's persisting beyond the OT timeline as well as Grogu joining Luke, presumably to be trained, would seem to at least set up the potential for events and character arcs to play out differently so that Luke wouldn't have to end up the self-exiled, failed, and bitter ex-Jedi whom Rey confronts at the conclusion of The Force Awakens.
Jon Favreau should have done This trilogy. He is by far the best option. He understands what people want. He gets it. We didn’t have someone like that.

The Rise of Skywalker along with Alien Covenant imho proves my point that fan service is a VERY VERY BAD thing when it comes to storytelling. I know many people hated The Last Jedi but imho it was The Rise of Skywalker that almost destroyed the entire sequel trilogy.
The sequel trilogy was destroyed. The Last Jedi left nowhere to go for 9. 9 tried to correct everything 8 did which made 9 somehow even worse than 8. 8 also retroactively ruined 7 since none of the set ups were paid off.
Coruscant would’ve been a welcome story line.. If I had written the sequels, I would’ve put Palpatine on Korriban and we would’ve seen the Sith Temples.. So many possibilities wasted..
IMO the BEST choice to make a good New Star Wars trilogy would be to have given the script to Timothy Zahn or adapted it from the old books brining as much of that back in to canon and also include set up started in the cartoon shows. if you can not do that just having ONE script broken in to THREE parts and filmed ALL three films back to back with out online feedback with out a 2nd director involved would have been the next best idea. not calling either film bad just saying we needs a single vision rather then two visions fighting each other. if I had to change the story to my vision or make small changes to the existing story that is a separate comment if asked.
@@jameshall9654 the books really were superior though I did get lost some time after Vector Prime. There is no perfect version of the time line but I loved the books and if we can't have the books the next best idea would be to have filled all 3 back to back like LOTR did.
Some people can't stand the cartoon shows, including me, and some people don't have time to sit around and watch childrens shows. If they want to set something up in a show I would rather it be mandalorian style because so far that is the only kind of star wars show I have enjoyed and it's the only star wars material made by disney that is actually good.

I think that Lucas should have made episodes 7, 8, & 9 in the 1990s instead of the prequels, taking advantage of Mark, Carrie, and Harrison while they were still relatively young and giving us their characters in their primes.

MUCH better. Finn's story arc is amazing going from lowly janitor/deserter to leader/liberator. Rey evolves in the final film fighting her way to the top with what should have been the _obvious_ choice for her lightsaber, the dual blade, considering her choice weapon in Episode 7 (a staff). Kylo isn't a rehashed Anakin arc of "good to bad back to good" but remains the tragic main villain. The book ending of Duel of the Fates fits so poetically, Coruscant at the end... Oof.. Letting Trevorrow go was a mistake.
Because nobody cares about the sequels anymore, just accept that they're dogshit movies and move on. No way in hell would they ever get the cast together and go film this shit it has 0 chance of ever happening. It would be more likely for them to retcon the trilogy entirely and have it be some weird alternate universe and then make an actual sequel trilogy.
I hate Rose because she "saved" Finn for both of them to be background characters in the next movie. Their romance seemed to come from nowhere and made TLJ even less cohesive or thought out than it would've been otherwise.

It's STAR WARS literally the most popular part of star wars and the only reason it's so unique and famous is because of LIGHTSABERS and they had ONE decent lightsaber fight the entire trilogy and that was in the force awakens and then the other was in the rise of skywalker with rey and kylo but there was literally no music and it was so boring and you knew neither of them would die there so it was garbage. Literally it's not that hard all disney had to do was hire some expert choreographers and get john williams to make an epic soundtrack for the duels and make a ton of epic lightsaber duels and the movies would have been at least a hell of a lot more entertaining even if the story was still shit.
The Last Jedi is trash. This is just another video picking on The Rise of Skywalker in order to deflect how the Last Jedi ruined Star Wars and split the fandom. I'm not saying The Rise of Skywalker is good, but it's merely a byproduct of the failure of The Last Jedi tearing the Star Wars universe apart. It's easy to make The Rise of Skywalker a punching bag, but the failures of The Last Jedi made a next film inevitably weak (having to fix the flaws and errors of Johnson & Kennedy)
TROS completely undos the last Jedi which is a good film. If the internet hadn’t spent 2 years hating on it they would have continued where it left off
I preffer a story that works with the ups and downs of the franchise like the creed movies or cobra kai, than one that denies what happen in the last movies to make something completly worse like halloween kills or x-men dark phoenix.
The Last Jedi did a lot of interesting things. Where they somewhat mean spirited in their conception? Probably, but when it works it works. Examples..... Rey from nowhere was nice, it makes her story more interesting. Killing Snoke through trickery was brilliant, why? Because it was established that neither Rey nor Ren had a snowball's chance in hell of beating him in combat. Luke's hologram on Krayt was epic! continuing the grand tradition of him messing with his uppity darksider nephew. It also bears mention that his X-Wing was implied to be dead at the time, thanks for clearing that up JJ ( -_-) All that said I do wish that there wasn't so much purposeless padding, the sheer idiocy of how Rey's abilities were handled is astonishing, and Admiral Holdo was so very very annoying.
Relegating Rose to a minor role was one of the BEST "ret-cons" that Rise of Skywalker did! That relationship was SO forced and ridiculous and about as comfortable as the thought of watching Jim Parsons try to flirt with the late great Stephen Hawking.

The good thing about Colin Trevorrow is that he writes his movies as a fan and not some shit writer just after some quick money. He watched movies as a kid and is now writing things as how he’d imagine other fans would love. Just like Jurassic world trilogy he did them as a fan who grew up watching the originals a kid
As much as EVERYTHING bugs me about that film what truly bugs me is that apparently when the X-Wing was designed one of its key features was an ability to be immersed in salt water for years on end and then just be dragged out and start on the button.
And to think Finn almost became a good adaptation of Kyle Katarn’s story. There are definitely some neat concepts in that script. It’s a shame Kathleen and JJ blew it so hard. Well never get another shot at a good sequel trilogy ever again. All we have to look forward to now are the side characters created by George, Dave and Jon.
with retcon sequels being a thing now, like Halloween for example, I wouldn't say we will never get another shot. Retcon the whole thing and start from Episode 6

The overuse of the race card in places where it doesn't belong is a major reason why more progress can't be made in that area. Similar thing with initial criticisms of Boyega as a stormtrooper. It wasn't due to racism, it was due to a misconception where people believed all stormtroopers were clones of Jango Fett. Once you explain that clones had a shorter lifespan and most were dead by the time of the original trilogy, most of those critics were far more accepting. But it's easy to just call people you disagree with "racist" and that's the bandwagon that too many have jumped on.

Honestly, they should have made the sequels take place a couple hundred years after RotJ. Luke and Leia could have come back as Force Ghosts. In the end, whatever they did would likely cheapen, or at the very least change the perspective we all had of the Original Trilogy with it being so close in proximity to the "happy ending." I will say the Sequel Trilogy has saved me so much money. I used to buy all sorts of Star Wars collectibles, books, etc. I am so apathetic towards it now, I haven't bought anything Star Wars in years at this point.

The only bad part of the script is the tor valum part, it's like literally everybody forgot about darth plaigus. And before any of the angry replys say that darth plaigus does not exist in Canon, he is. He's mentioned in revenge of the sith and its heavily implied in the same scene that he trained palpatine
I went and rewatched Jenny Nicholson's script reading after this video popped up on my feed randomly. I think the best question to ask is: Which version is worse? The Trevorrow script is absolutely terrible. A lightsaber guillotine? Really? "Hux realizes the tragic truth: he lost the star wars."
I would have much rather prefer this to have been the movie because this doesn’t straight up devalue the Prequels and OG Trilogy like rancid feculent garbage movie ros did. Colin Trevorrow is actually a good director unlike jj anus and roundhead johnson don’t get me wrong the damage is already done with tfa and tlj but I actually enjoy this script I still have a problem with Tor Valum being Darth Plagueis and Palpatine’s Master because as an EU fan it insults Darth Tenebrous Legacy even though he’s not canon in this iteration so I’d say just have him be something else entirely not affiliated with The Order Of The Sith aka Rule Of 2 Sith but another faction, you can have the decades old Holocron of Emperor Palpatine tell Vader to investigate the mysterious Dark Side energy that is Tor Valum. Though its not perfect its still much better than all the shitty sequel entries.
The trilogy failed because the directors had drastically different visions for the project and the visions were incompatible with each other. The force awakens introduced a lot of fan service, lore and mystery as to who characters were and why. It answered none of the questions. Fans debated for the next 2 years what it all meant. The last Jedi decided to go in the other directions to almost militantly anti-fan service by declaring none of what the first movie hinted at matters or exists. No one is special. By itself it was a beautiful movie but felt really disjointed from the tone of first movie. Similar, the Rise of Skywalker went head over heals in favor of fan service likely as a result of the TLJ going completely in the other direction and as a result it too felt disjointed in tone from the previous movie. Making the whole trilogy feel discombobulated from start to finish. There was no synergy and the stories seemed at war with each other. If J.J. Abrams wrote and the directed the entire trilogy it would likely have been good. His vision would have been full of fan service and likely Easter eggs and nostalgia. Inversely, if Rion Johnson directed and wrote the trilogy it would have also been very good but also very different from Abrams. He would have made beautiful movies, reinvented the world and done so without the blatant call backs to the rest of the series. Either trilogies would have been worth watching but when the two visions were forced together it was just a mess. That should be the take away here. As someone else said… a wasted opportunity.
Return of the Jedi was originally darker and more adult, with Han dying, Wookies instead of Ewoks, a more realistic (how do we rebuild the galactic government now?) instead of the yub nub party, and a troubled Luke walking off in the sunset of an uncertain future.
Interesting that much of this could still be made into a part 8.5 - just take the final fates of characters and the definitive ending out and they could still give us this now DO IT DISNEY!!!
The last two Star Wars movies were nothing but a full diaper that splatted on the floor. I refused to see Rise of Skywalker in the theater. It took me breaking the movie up into three pieces to finish it in Disney Plus. I couldn't sit through it at one time. It made my head hurt from how bad it was. My son watched the first part with me and said "This is boring!"
The sequel trilogy being the roler coaster it was, I would love to see duel of the fates, it's more interesting, it flows better & actually adds stuff to star wars. Rather than, Doing a new hope again, undoing it, & then undoing the undoing with an uneeded third installment. I would rather the last jedi end the sequels, (not saying i like the movie) just that the ending sat better in my stomach then rise of skywalker
2:08 Huh? Vader vs Obi-Wan was pretty far past the halfway point of ANH. It was TLJ that ruined this tradition first; what with the lack of ANY lightsaber duels at all.
The thing that really makes me hate the rise of skywalker the most is the fact that everything that happens leads to that film. Doesn't matter how good the original trilogy is cos now whenever I watch them I just know that all these characters stories and everything ends with rise of skywalker.... Doesn't matter how mental them lightsaber fights were or how compelling lukes story was because it all leads to the big bad dying because some random Mary sue pulls a second lightsaber out to block his lightning.... Idk how star wars can redeem this without retconning a large majority of the sequel trilogy

Idk if it was Trevorrow's script (i think there was another one? If not then it was Trevorrow's) that actually "redeemed" General Hux's HORRIBLE writing lmao. As an obsessive admirer of Darth Vader and the emperor (collecting artifacts from them), he absolutely hated Kylo and was envious of him for being both a descendant of Vader and powerful in the Force when he himself wasn't Force-sensitive. This little detail even explains his betrayal.
Don't judge, but after reading the script for Duel of the Fates I wish Trevorrow had done the ENTIRE Sequel Trilogy. Dude clearly GOT Star Wars and embraced the Prequels, Original Trilogy AND Legends while also actually building off of Force Awakens AND Last Jedi in fresh and interesting ways.

Bob Iger was the one who said they could only push from May to December of the same year, and required yearly releases. Everyone involved in the movies knew they were rushed. And honestly, in such a rushed environment, I understand why they canned Trevorrow after *The Book of Henry* came out. They were scared. We don't know who ultimately made that call, but Iger is the villain of the ST. He insisted that Episode IX be his big finale for his retirement.
KK has produced some of the greatest films of all time. Lucas handpicked her. Iger is the bureaucrat who screwed the whole thing.
HOWEVER, I do not understand how JJ came in to do IX, read Finn's Coruscant uprising story, and threw it out. Totally boneheaded move.

That's a cool idea and all. But I feel like instead they should scrap the whole franchise. So Dave fionli and John favreau can do whatever he wants, with the mando, Luke, grogu, ashoka, and etc I don't want that to be held back by episode 7.

I appreciate how DOTF actually tried to be a proper conclusion to everything that came before.
It felt like a sequel to TLJ and even TFA (like it answers questions from TFA that even TROS didn't get to).
It feels like more of a cap to the first 6 movies and even the tv shows.
And whether you agree with Rey's conclusions at the end, her arc and the way she finds balance actually gives the ST a reason for existing.

Yeah, this would’ve saved the ST for me. The only thing that I still wouldn’t like is Luke but everything else would’ve been way more tolerable if we got this version of Episode 9.

While I respect the opinion, I disagree. Imo TLJ took Finn from being someone who was loyal to Rey (he says enough times in TFA he's doing everything to get to/help Rey), not the Resistance. His arc in TLJ is seeing why the Resistance exists and why he has to help them - leading to him literally trying to lay down his life to save the Resistance as a whole on Crait.
But in TROS, I agree. They did nothing with him and wasted him.

Finn needed to learn the lesson that, yes, he knew about suffering, but that it wasn't just about him and his experiences and personal loyalties (his arc in TFA), there was a much bigger picture. Poe needed to be on the ship because he had a lot to learn about that type of leadership and hope to succeed. He needed to go from hotshot pilot to collected leader as basically Leia's heir.

Honestly Star Wars should have just expanded through stand alone movies and spin offs. Trying to top Luke's trilogy is honesty a waste of time. Yes the prequels aren't liked by all, but at least it has an outline and strong story! 7, 8 & 9 have no consistency or thought out plan. All of the movies have their moments, but the latest trilogy really was a let down 😔

As someone who really doesn't like the 1st 2nd and 3rd movies I can say they're 1000% better than the inconsistent dumbester fire that is the 7th 8th and 9th movies.
The prequels tell one coherent story, and despite all its awkward parts, it tells that story really well.
The sequels had nothing to say and no coherence, and honestly I don't know that RoS had even one good moment.
The prequels should have been so much better. The Anakin to Darth Vader story was rushed and really poorly done. Yes, they had an outline, but that's the nature of prequels. - they already had a pre-defined destination they had to reach.
The sequel trilogy pretty much had a blank page and could potentially have been awesome but were ruined by the chopping and changing of directors and resulting lack of cohesive storyline.
Such missed opportunities - both prequels and sequels. If only they'd just stuck with the original trilogy!

I agree Duel of the Fates would have been a much better movie although I really didn't like the whole Rey is in love with Poe thing. And personally I felt like both Rey and kylo should have died at the end making the end of Star Wars be also the end of the Jedi and the Sith.
I really loved Reys double bladed lightsaber and Finns overall arch in it. Not sure what they would have done with Liea maybe just replace her with Lando? Or even Maz Kanata whom I thought should have been in the sequels alot more.
Rey and kylo aren't the last jedi and sith in the canon. So that ending wouldnt work.

Truly. I'm a big Star Wars fan, and I LOVE literally EVERYTHING that I have ever seen/read/played from SW media as of july 2022. EXCEPT the Rise of Skywalker. It forever will be a big stain on this franchise for me. That shit deserves to be decanonized. I'm pretty sure literally anyone can grab a Duel of the Fates script, toss away the story desicions they don't like, replace them with their own, tweek it all a little bit and get a movie that is millions of times better than... whatever the hell this was.
I think the biggest issue Lucasfilm had was that it would have required a recasting of Leia as she was very central to Trevorrow's story.
The story itself was excellent and tied elements of Force lore from The Clone Wars in too.
Such a shame it was binned in favour of TROS

The Last Jedi wasn't really different at all.
Yes. Exactly right. Duel of the Fates needed some more editing, some of the ideas were not fully fleshed out, but it made much more sense thematically--giving some coherence to the sequel trilogy, and to the saga as a whole. Clearly, Disney didn't like the grey jedi direction. A compromise could have been: Not so much that balance is a balance between dark and light, but true "light" is not the dogmatic fundamentalism of the Jedi. In a sense, the prequel era Jedi had come close to the dark side with their lack of balance. In my mind, that makes more sense than a blend of dark and light. More that the Jedi had lost track of what the light is really about.
I think seeing finn be "awakened" by the force and defecting would've been a better story than the trilogy we had, I feel like boyega would've made a really good force user/Jedi
He was fine as it was; I liked the idea to have Rey to be the new protagonist; but instead of make Finn a janitor basically, they could have him continue to grow and as force user, hold his own against the enemies. He is a great character in the first movie that is totally wasted in the following movies

Strangely I enjoyed it in the cinema but have no desire to re-watch. On reflection it is an absolute mess of a plot and the resurrection of the emperor is terrible.

@@joermnyc Rian and Colin actually had been working together, largely off the work Lawrence Kasdan had been doing for episode 7. But when Kasdan pulled out Abrams was left to do all of 7 himself and Disney didn't give him the time to start over so he reverted, to a degree, to the greatest hits for TFA. Rian decided not to go back to the start amd rework his script from the ground up to incorporate JJ's version of 7, only changing what he had to to make it work. And then colin left.
The problem wasn't that there was no plan, there was a plan, but two of the three imvolved were pushed out because of corporate meddling and their replacement had to rush his work both times.
Yeah, this and Episode 2 are my least favorite in the franchise. Episode 2 for how slow, boring and terribly handled the love story was, and Episode 9 for trying so hard to please everybody that they pleased nobody. Duel of Fates actually sounds awesome… shame they didn’t go through with it.
No one sequel movie can be laid to blame.... the first was a reductive, the next was a manboy trying simply to be contrary, the last was tail between legs embarrassment.
Let's just draw a line under them and even if we think they look pretty, sound good and had potentially good ideas, that the whole sequel arch is an artistic and cinematic failure.

was going against a force user who is shown to be a great fighter, especially with melee weapons throughout the film.
Also speaking of maul, why do people only call Rey a Mary Sue, and not other SW protagonists like Obi-Wan, a Jedi padawan who beat maul when even his master couldn’t? This has always been a thing in SW, it’s not a flaw, it’s just something you have to accept or else the stories won’t work.

I just realized how awesome a Disney+ spinoff series following the path Fin takes to become a jedi would be.
He could traveling the galaxy training and finding old jedi temples and texts, learning the wisdom from when jedi truly were the guardians of of peace and democracy, and lost jedi skills.
There could be a series with Rey finding a jedi holocron in Luke's cottage with a list of force sensitive kids, then traveling the world to find them all and bring them to a safe zone.
After the the 2 first seasons are done, it could then become a multi season series where the two of them train a new generation of jedi, while traveling the galaxy spreading the knowledge of the jedi, and fighting dark force users.
But, there's probably a reason I'm not a screenwriter.
It could actually be a truer sequel to episode 8, showing that anyone can be “special”, Finn travelling to build not the old Jedi order, but something wholly new.

The empire was destroyed and gone and they shouldn't have had a knock off empire (first order) and no matter how good the characters were or the action these movies always would have sucked because they did the same rebels vs empire all over again and no one wanted to see that we wanted to see something new and interesting not a shitty ripoff of the original trilogy.

I would love it, but am not sure actors would come back. John Bogoya kinda hates Disney for how Finn was screwed over and other actors aren't interested in coming back. However Affleck and Cavil said the same, but immediately came back when the Snyder cut was greenlit, so fingers crossed.
According to some interpretations of the first 2 seasons of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm is softly de-canonizing the Sequel Trilogy as it further integrates "the Filoni-verse" into the overall story. The biggest wild card may be the World Between Worlds introduced in the last season of Rebels, which enabled Ahsoka to escape her lightsaber duel with Vader. It might be just wishful thinking, but Ahsoka's persisting beyond the OT timeline as well as Grogu joining Luke, presumably to be trained, would seem to at least set up the potential for events and character arcs to play out differently so that Luke wouldn't have to end up the self-exiled, failed, and bitter ex-Jedi whom Rey confronts at the conclusion of The Force Awakens.
Jon Favreau should have done This trilogy. He is by far the best option. He understands what people want. He gets it. We didn’t have someone like that.

The Rise of Skywalker along with Alien Covenant imho proves my point that fan service is a VERY VERY BAD thing when it comes to storytelling. I know many people hated The Last Jedi but imho it was The Rise of Skywalker that almost destroyed the entire sequel trilogy.
The sequel trilogy was destroyed. The Last Jedi left nowhere to go for 9. 9 tried to correct everything 8 did which made 9 somehow even worse than 8. 8 also retroactively ruined 7 since none of the set ups were paid off.
Coruscant would’ve been a welcome story line..
If I had written the sequels, I would’ve put Palpatine on Korriban and we would’ve seen the Sith Temples.. So many possibilities wasted..

Palpatine should have been a force wraith, a sith ghost. He would have bee hopping bodies and Rey should have been the last body to inhabit

IMO the BEST choice to make a good New Star Wars trilogy would be to have given the script to Timothy Zahn or adapted it from the old books brining as much of that back in to canon and also include set up started in the cartoon shows.
if you can not do that just having ONE script broken in to THREE parts and filmed ALL three films back to back with out online feedback with out a 2nd director involved would have been the next best idea.
not calling either film bad just saying we needs a single vision rather then two visions fighting each other.

@@jameshall9654 the books really were superior though I did get lost some time after Vector Prime. There is no perfect version of the time line but I loved the books and if we can't have the books the next best idea would be to have filled all 3 back to back like LOTR did.
Some people can't stand the cartoon shows, including me, and some people don't have time to sit around and watch childrens shows. If they want to set something up in a show I would rather it be mandalorian style because so far that is the only kind of star wars show I have enjoyed and it's the only star wars material made by disney that is actually good.

I think that Lucas should have made episodes 7, 8, & 9 in the 1990s instead of the prequels, taking advantage of Mark, Carrie, and Harrison while they were still relatively young and giving us their characters in their primes.

MUCH better. Finn's story arc is amazing going from lowly janitor/deserter to leader/liberator. Rey evolves in the final film fighting her way to the top with what should have been the _obvious_ choice for her lightsaber, the dual blade, considering her choice weapon in Episode 7 (a staff). Kylo isn't a rehashed Anakin arc of "good to bad back to good" but remains the tragic main villain. The book ending of Duel of the Fates fits so poetically, Coruscant at the end... Oof.. Letting Trevorrow go was a mistake.

I hate Rose because she "saved" Finn for both of them to be background characters in the next movie. Their romance seemed to come from nowhere and made TLJ even less cohesive or thought out than it would've been otherwise.

It's STAR WARS literally the most popular part of star wars and the only reason it's so unique and famous is because of LIGHTSABERS and they had ONE decent lightsaber fight the entire trilogy and that was in the force awakens and then the other was in the rise of skywalker with rey and kylo but there was literally no music and it was so boring and you knew neither of them would die there so it was garbage. Literally it's not that hard all disney had to do was hire some expert choreographers and get john williams to make an epic soundtrack for the duels and make a ton of epic lightsaber duels and the movies would have been at least a hell of a lot more entertaining even if the story was still shit.

The Last Jedi is trash. This is just another video picking on The Rise of Skywalker in order to deflect how the Last Jedi ruined Star Wars and split the fandom. I'm not saying The Rise of Skywalker is good, but it's merely a byproduct of the failure of The Last Jedi tearing the Star Wars universe apart. It's easy to make The Rise of Skywalker a punching bag, but the failures of The Last Jedi made a next film inevitably weak (having to fix the flaws and errors of Johnson & Kennedy)
TROS completely undos the last Jedi which is a good film. If the internet hadn’t spent 2 years hating on it they would have continued where it left off
I preffer a story that works with the ups and downs of the franchise like the creed movies or cobra kai, than one that denies what happen in the last movies to make something completly worse like halloween kills or x-men dark phoenix.
The Last Jedi did a lot of interesting things.
Where they somewhat mean spirited in their conception? Probably, but when it works it works.
Examples.....
Rey from nowhere was nice, it makes her story more interesting.
Killing Snoke through trickery was brilliant, why? Because it was established that neither Rey nor Ren had a snowball's chance in hell of beating him in combat.
Luke's hologram on Krayt was epic! continuing the grand tradition of him messing with his uppity darksider nephew.
It also bears mention that his X-Wing was implied to be dead at the time, thanks for clearing that up JJ

I do wish that there wasn't so much purposeless padding, the sheer idiocy of how Rey's abilities were handled is astonishing, and Admiral Holdo was so very very annoying.
Relegating Rose to a minor role was one of the BEST "ret-cons" that Rise of Skywalker did!
That relationship was SO forced and ridiculous and about as comfortable as the thought of watching Jim Parsons try to flirt with the late great Stephen Hawking.

The good thing about Colin Trevorrow is that he writes his movies as a fan and not some shit writer just after some quick money. He watched movies as a kid and is now writing things as how he’d imagine other fans would love. Just like Jurassic world trilogy he did them as a fan who grew up watching the originals a kid

What is there to like about it?
As much as EVERYTHING bugs me about that film what truly bugs me is that apparently when the X-Wing was designed one of its key features was an ability to be immersed in salt water for years on end and then just be dragged out and start on the button.

And to think Finn almost became a good adaptation of Kyle Katarn’s story. There are definitely some neat concepts in that script. It’s a shame Kathleen and JJ blew it so hard. Well never get another shot at a good sequel trilogy ever again. All we have to look forward to now are the side characters created by George, Dave and Jon.

The overuse of the race card in places where it doesn't belong is a major reason why more progress can't be made in that area. Similar thing with initial criticisms of Boyega as a stormtrooper. It wasn't due to racism, it was due to a misconception where people believed all stormtroopers were clones of Jango Fett. Once you explain that clones had a shorter lifespan and most were dead by the time of the original trilogy, most of those critics were far more accepting. But it's easy to just call people you disagree with "racist" and that's the bandwagon that too many have jumped on.

There was no saving episode 9. Ep 8 killed the episodic movies but it was really doomed from improper planning from the start.
They should've let Lawrence Kasdan and John Knoll write the entire story of the sequel trilogy FIRST, then break it down into three movies like, you know, the other Star Wars trilogies.

Honestly, they should have made the sequels take place a couple hundred years after RotJ. Luke and Leia could have come back as Force Ghosts. In the end, whatever they did would likely cheapen, or at the very least change the perspective we all had of the Original Trilogy with it being so close in proximity to the "happy ending."
I will say the Sequel Trilogy has saved me so much money. I used to buy all sorts of Star Wars collectibles, books, etc. I am so apathetic towards it now, I haven't bought anything Star Wars in years at this point.
I agree kind of, I would have rather it been hundreds of years later as opposed to what we got but I still would have liked to see luke as the grandmaster jedi and leading his new temple and have some sort of new conflict that could be inspired from legends material. But what we got was the worst case scenario, it was such a blatant cash grab they were afraid of getting any backlash for creating a new, unique story so they played it safe and told the same exact story as the OT while shitting on everything luke and his friends accomplished in the OT. It pisses me off so much thinking about how they actually thought we would enjoy that trash. These people thought all star wars was is death star, darth vader figure, emperor in throne figure, rebels, new jedi that will save the day figure. It's so surface level it feels like they were catering to the most casual fans that only remember those things about star wars. Star wars is so much more and they could have created a new fresh story with a blend of the prequels style and original trilogy with the insane CGI and effects we have these days but instead we get what feels like an off-brand knock off of the original trilogy.

When I first saw the opening scene with Kylo Ren in Episode IX I was thinking that planet was Dathomir.
The only bad part of the script is the tor valum part, it's like literally everybody forgot about darth plaigus. And before any of the angry replys say that darth plaigus does not exist in Canon, he is. He's mentioned in revenge of the sith and its heavily implied in the same scene that he trained palpatine

I went and rewatched Jenny Nicholson's script reading after this video popped up on my feed randomly.
I think the best question to ask is: Which version is worse?

I would have much rather prefer this to have been the movie because this doesn’t straight up devalue the Prequels and OG Trilogy like rancid feculent garbage movie ros did. Colin Trevorrow is actually a good director unlike jj anus and roundhead johnson don’t get me wrong the damage is already done with tfa and tlj but I actually enjoy this script I still have a problem with Tor Valum being Darth Plagueis and Palpatine’s Master because as an EU fan it insults Darth Tenebrous Legacy even though he’s not canon in this iteration so I’d say just have him be something else entirely not affiliated with The Order Of The Sith aka Rule Of 2 Sith but another faction, you can have the decades old Holocron of Emperor Palpatine tell Vader to investigate the mysterious Dark Side energy that is Tor Valum. Though its not perfect its still much better than all the shitty sequel entries.
The trilogy failed because the directors had drastically different visions for the project and the visions were incompatible with each other.
The force awakens introduced a lot of fan service, lore and mystery as to who characters were and why. It answered none of the questions. Fans debated for the next 2 years what it all meant.
The last Jedi decided to go in the other directions to almost militantly anti-fan service by declaring none of what the first movie hinted at matters or exists. No one is special. By itself it was a beautiful movie but felt really disjointed from the tone of first movie.
Similar, the Rise of Skywalker went head over heals in favor of fan service likely as a result of the TLJ going completely in the other direction and as a result it too felt disjointed in tone from the previous movie. Making the whole trilogy feel discombobulated from start to finish. There was no synergy and the stories seemed at war with each other.
If J.J. Abrams wrote and the directed the entire trilogy it would likely have been good. His vision would have been full of fan service and likely Easter eggs and nostalgia.
Inversely, if Rion Johnson directed and wrote the trilogy it would have also been very good but also very different from Abrams. He would have made beautiful movies, reinvented the world and done so without the blatant call backs to the rest of the series.
Either trilogies would have been worth watching but when the two visions were forced together it was just a mess. That should be the take away here. As someone else said… a wasted opportunity.

The prequels were probably first scripted to have Jar Jar as the main bad guy, and George re scripted them to make Dooku the bad guy
Return of the Jedi was originally darker and more adult, with Han dying, Wookies instead of Ewoks, a more realistic (how do we rebuild the galactic government now?) instead of the yub nub party, and a troubled Luke walking off in the sunset of an uncertain future.
Interesting that much of this could still be made into a part 8.5 - just take the final fates of characters and the definitive ending out and they could still give us this now

The last two Star Wars movies were nothing but a full diaper that splatted on the floor. I refused to see Rise of Skywalker in the theater. It took me breaking the movie up into three pieces to finish it in Disney Plus. I couldn't sit through it at one time. It made my head hurt from how bad it was. My son watched the first part with me and said "This is boring!"
The sequel trilogy being the roler coaster it was, I would love to see duel of the fates, it's more interesting, it flows better & actually adds stuff to star wars.
Rather than, Doing a new hope again, undoing it, & then undoing the undoing with an uneeded third installment.
I would rather the last jedi end the sequels, (not saying i like the movie) just that the ending sat better in my stomach then rise of skywalker

The thing that really makes me hate the rise of skywalker the most is the fact that everything that happens leads to that film. Doesn't matter how good the original trilogy is cos now whenever I watch them I just know that all these characters stories and everything ends with rise of skywalker....

Idk if it was Trevorrow's script (i think there was another one? If not then it was Trevorrow's) that actually "redeemed" General Hux's HORRIBLE writing lmao. As an obsessive admirer of Darth Vader and the emperor (collecting artifacts from them), he absolutely hated Kylo and was envious of him for being both a descendant of Vader and powerful in the Force when he himself wasn't Force-sensitive. This little detail even explains his betrayal.
